LAMONGAN, Indonesia:
The bodies of all seven students who went missing when the boat they were in capsized on the Bengawan Solo river in Lamongan regency, East Java on Friday (Oct 7) have been recovered, with search and rescue teams finding the final body floating on the river on early Sunday morning.
"We were patrolling on the river. The local community also helped in the search operations using their wooden boats," Brigadier Dudung, a member of the police who helped evacuate the bodies, said according to news portal detikcom.
The boat was carrying 25 passengers, all male students from the Langitan Islamic Boarding School, before it capsized. Some of them were on their way to a nearby market across the river on the boat, which was believed to be overloaded.
“According to witnesses, the river current was quite strong, creating instability for the boat,” The Jakarta Post quoted East Java Police spokesperson Argo Yuwono as saying.
One of the 18 survivors, Choirul Anam, told detikcom that he held onto the capsized boat along with three others behind him as he could not swim.
Several accidents involving traditional wooden boats crossing the Bengawan Solo river have occurred in the past, including one in 2011, when a boat carrying 40 passengers capsized and sank.
