Are we to believe that the japanese spend almost 4 years occupying Singapore during WW2 and did not force local singapore women into being comfort women? Is this a dark secret of Singapore's history that was swept under the carpet because of Lee Con You's close and friendly relationships with the Japanese? unfortunately the older generation that lived during this period are almost gone. The Japanese force rape many women, using them as comfort women in all the areas they conquered. Therefore, there were comfort women from Korea, China, Phillippines, malaya, Dutch east Indies (even angmo Dutch women), Taiwanese, etc. Why not Singapore? This aspect of singapore's history has not been investigated by the officially sanctioned PAP historians. I find it very hard to believe that the Japanese who took and looted whatever they wanted in the places they occupied would suddenly be on their best behaviour towards singapore females. Do we actually expect them to pay for prostitutes in SIngapore while they were here, but forced women elsewhere into being comfort women? The answer is not bloody likely. They must have had a brothel set up where forced comfort women provided sex to japanese soldiers. Very nice of the PAP to welcome the resolution of the comfort women issue in other countries but somehow ignore this same issue in their own country. Fucking PAP.
SINGAPORE: The Republic welcomes the efforts by Japan and South Korea "to resolve long-standing painful historical issues, including the plight of 'comfort women'", the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in response to media queries on Tuesday (Dec 29).
The MFA's comment comes after an agreement made at a meeting between the Japanese and the Republic of Korea (ROK) Foreign Ministers on Monday. Under the agreement, Japan apologised and offered a ¥1 billion (S$11.7 million) payment to Korean women who were forced to work as sex slaves.
The dispute over "comfort women" forced to work in Japanese brothels during World War II had marred relations between the two countries for decades. Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said on Monday that the payment from Japan was not compensation, but was aimed at restoring the women's dignity.
“The resolution of these issues will help people in both countries move forward to build trust and reconciliation,” said the MFA spokesman. “This will not only benefit Japan and the ROK, but will also enhance regional peace, stability and cooperation.”
Up to 200,000 women, many of them Korean, are estimated to have been sexually enslaved by Japan during World War II. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters in Tokyo after speaking by phone with South Korean President Park Geun-hye that the two countries "will welcome a new era".
