Malaysian Parliament left red-faced after serving 'scissors salad' at official dinner




PETALING JAYA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Malaysia's Parliament has said that a menu card with the spelling error "scissors salad" was replaced before an official dinner on Monday (Nov 23).

Caesar salad, a classic starter at many restaurants, was listed as "scissors salad (chicken)", while the traditional French dessert of creme brulee was spelt "cream brule" on the menu.

In a statement released by its corporate communications division on Wednesday (Nov 25), it said that the menu card was prepared by the caterer and not by Parliament.

"The spelling mistake was, however, detected before the dinner and was replaced with a new card with the correct spelling," it said.

"Parliament hopes the issue will not be prolonged in order to protect the identity and image of the country's legislative body."

The statement also said that Parliament regretted that irresponsible quarters had circulated the image of the menu with the spelling error on social media.

An image of the menu went viral on WhatsApp and other messaging platforms this week.

The dinner was attended by Parliament officers and Speaker of the House Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia.
