SINGAPORE: A hotel licensee has had his licence cancelled and fined S$800 for allowing sex workers to ply their trade on his premises.

53-year-old Siah Chen Long from Shing Hotel at Kitchener Road in Little India is believed to be the first person to have the licence cancelled in court.

The court heard that Police Senior Staff Sergeant (SSSGT) Tan Bee Song and his colleagues were on a lookout for vice activities in the area at around 1.20am on 10 February when he spotted some women loitering around the hotel, speaking to men walking by.

The women then entered Shing Hotel with the men in tow.

Senior Staff Sergeant Tan and his team raided the hotel about 20 minutes later and found that two of the rooms were used by prostitutes for sexual activities.

In mitigation, Siah's lawyer, Harold Seet, said that it was not mandatory for the court to cancel his client's licence as it was due to expire on 31 December this year.

Mr Seet added that Siah was not at the hotel when the receptionist allowed the sex workers to enter the premises.

For allowing prostitutes to ply their trade in his hotel, Siah could have been fined up to S$1,000
