In the case of the LFC Academy, there have been more than a good handful who made names for themselves in recent times ... eg: Fowler, Gerrard, Carragher, Owen, Macca, etc
Over the period, there were also a good handful who made the grade upon graduting from the LFC Academy BUT still trying to break into or never established themselves in the first team ... eg: (Stephen) Warnock, (Danny) Guthrie, (Lee) Peltier, (Neil) Mellor, (Zak) Whitbread, (Stephen) Wright, (Ritchie) Partridge, etc
Of course, there are many more who left the LFC Academy, without their names even being whispered in our ears ever.
Becoz the club is amongst the richer ones (not to mention more expectant ones), our success at churning out good young professionals is not so obviously felt ... but this tradition has been ongoing since the days of Shankly.
For the record, despite 2 foreign managers at LFC, there's always been old boys involved in the backroom ... from Lee & Thompson then to Ablett now - Heighway has been the Academy Director throughout both reigns.
That should have said something ... no??

actually there's nothing to proud off when Singapore boasted the gold medal won in the recent Asiad thru Tao Li....and other China born atheletes..it sort of turn me off....but anyway other countries oso pratice the same thing..HK table tennis squad is make up of PRC players, Qatar and Oman long distance runners hailed from Kenya....

the only time tat i feel patriotic about Singapore sports is when the Lions r playing in the Malaysia Cup... though it is playing against state team instead of international team..but the feeling after beating those states teams...is machiam like how Pool fans feel when they had beaten everton....it's called neighbours rivalry....

I have the fullest admiration for Daniel Bennett ... for committing to Sillypore's cause.
In comparison, though, if only it had been Zak ... after all, Mr Bennett didn't even passed his trials with some 2nd or 3rd division side. But then again, some would say Zak made it as far as he did with LFC, also only becoz his old man was under the employment of LFC.

I beg to differ ... didn't really get much joy out of seeing our national side (with foreign signings like Abbas some more) walk over the smaller state teams. Worst, when they can't even beat the better state teams ... like Kedah, Pahang & Selangor.
However, I enjoyed seeing the national team get good results in SEA Games or even, Merlion Cup (if the oldies like me can still remember) ...

For the record, I still support the table tennis team, despite my disagreement on how most of the players are Chinese Nationals granted citizenships. I still cheer my loudest when it's Tan Paey Fern or Tan Yan Zhen playing ...
It's just like I didn't see why the Everest climb was lauded by the then PM himself ... when almost 3/4 of the team were actually Malaysians?? I was more paiseh than proud.

Bennet is a decent player for SEA standard...this shows the gap between the local sports scene and the international scene..btw if i m not wrong Kiatisuk of Thailand manage to play for one of the lower league club in England....

it's because of the France 98 teams r made up of players wif origins from the different French colonies...tat is y the SSC decide to bend the rules to attract the foreign talents....and many countries r praticing these...neutralizing the citizenship of players...but for the s'pore squad ..it's way way too much..imagine a team of Croats, English, Africans, PRC, etc... and furthermore..these countries have no historical link wif singapore..like wat France hv with Algeria, Mali, Senegal, etc....

countries like Japan oni have 1 foreign born player (Alex), Poland oso have one (the nigerian player), Portugal have Deco......but Singapore hv way too many foreigners in their football squad...

yah..Singapore..greatest rival ..Selangor...Pahang and Kedah..Sarawak..the venue whereby the Lions hate to play...b'cos of the funny witch craft....the rest machiam is like a walk over...but on the recent matches i saw..actually Perlis r becoming stonger and they in fact won the cup...
off course i rember the Merlion Cup..it is a tournament whereby Singapore invite some neighbour countries..to compete in the merlion cup at Kallang..the last time i saw is way back in 1993....

just imagine when the Chinese play against the Singapore team in the Asiad..your opponent is actually from your motherland...

They are all gentlemen players, not ppl who cheat, who play rough and dirty and certainly not burly like Rooney. Din know that the original question I posed on the Liverpool Youth Academy can lead to discussion on Malaysia Cup, and to our Foreign Talent scheme wan. Bros damn solid siah, link link here, link link there, everything also can link link.

Since we are on the topics, my 2 cents:

a) Malaysia Cup -- True we got foreign players, but the other states also got foreign players too. And in Malaysia Cup, we are playing against other state teams, so, we should not be treated like a national team. So, having foreign players are OK (they are not considered Singaporeans BTW). So, everyone is on level playing field. And it was damn exciting to watch seeing us beat those suckers up. I still remember the last Cup we won. Such a wonderful feeling.

b) Foreign Talent -- This one I agree is damn lao-kui. As some bro pointed out, these foreigners have no links to us unlike those in France. They are here for the money. What else? No doubt some of them are pretty good, but I seriously doubt if their heart and mind is for Singapore though. Well, at least I think majority of them aren't. But having said that, when we won the Tiger Cup recently, it feel damn good still, despite the foreigners. Aiyah, typical Singaporean lah, "Can win something good liao lah, who care about whether imported talent or not."

After 3 wins and 11 goals now LFC is No. 3 on the table but we are still 13 points away from ManU.

Lets hope LFC grap the last 9 points of the year with ManU and Chelsea dropping some points

1) Malaysia & Thailand used to have an annual big-scale football tournament ... Merdeka Cup & King's Cup respectively
2) High-profile national (& club) teams were invited to participate
3) Sillypore was part of the annual invitee list ... until we were deemed a drag, in terms of raising the standard of play
4) When left out, FAS organised their own competition ... but I'm sure participation was not restricted to regional teams only (eg Australia, European club sides, etc)

I specifically remembered a walkout led by Malek Awab, protesting a dubious referee decision ... think that was before his time with Malaysian Armed Forces in the M-Cup.

Take the Middle East countries' policy of "hiring" world-class African long-distance runners in their colours for example ... you think how many more countries in the World are richer than Sillypore & therefore would be the first to successfully "buy" their first Olympic Gold medal??

everybody in England seems to like him...actually if he never donned the blues of Toffees or the red of MU..he will be 1 of the player i like to watch in EPL...

y players choose Pool over Everton..is b'cos of the rich history and the no of silverwares the red half of the merseyside have won..no teams in england can match the number of League titles and European Champ tat the incredible reds of merseysides have won.....though i believe in the mid 80s..it is everton and liverpool squaring one another for the title....

from wat i can recall .. the last merlion cup i watch consist of our neighboring team from M'sia, Qatar, PRK...etc.. Singapore did well in the competition..qualifying from the group stage.

after tat competition was the infamous SEA game 93..whereby Lim Tong Hai was know for the wrong reasons..i.e. scoring 2 own goals....

precisely...but wif a small population, lacking in facilities, small league, lack of finance and others contributing factors..we cant seems to build a soccer team with 100% Singapore born players...

why i think tat French team is justified..is because the teams r consist of early immigrants from French colonies to France, they r born and breed in France ..even though their ancestry routes goes all the way back to those African, Carribean countries...

even the dutch team have players (Ruud Gullit) uhailed from Suriname..an ex Dutch influenced countires...they r immirants to Netherlands and they born and breed in Netherlands..

their purpose of immigrating is not for footballing reasons.. but to escape poverty...
