Re: Shanghai "In Conversation" Views, News & Reviews
For movies out in theatres.. yes, buy the DVD instead. For up to the minute HK TVB serials or US serials.. I download from the net.
Just completed downloading 24, season 4. Which i don't think is in the DVD market yet... also for downloading PORN.. make full use of the subscribed bandwidth. |

Great info Bro Nongho! It helps to know how to navigate the streets of Shanghai... advise to newcomers to Shanghai.. unlike places like Beijing, it is not enough to just name the landmark that you want to go to unless it is something VERY prominent... In Shanghai, you'll need to give taxi drivers 2 road names at least... the intersections are what they will know... and don't be surprise if some Pudong taxi drivers are not familiar with even famous places like Xiang Yang Market for example... I've personally met some before... and the same applies for Puxi drivers... some have no clue as to how to drive around in Pudong, apart from the airport that is... It is strange, but having road maps on you will be a great help... Cheerio~! Shanghaitan ![]() |

I always get my DVDs on the pudong side across the river although I reside on the puxi side. Unless you go to a big shop then the dvds will be priced as what you are purchasing. I found on the puxi side mostly are street vendors with their suitcase, bicycle or push cart with their merchandise stack up which you can get for 6-8 RMB. I find that difficult to browse with the limited space and the selection doesn't holds much. Its ok if you know the vendor as a regular in the location if not the vendor may dissappear for days or you can't exchange a faulty dvd. As for new movies, most of them are taken from the cinema or the quality is quite bad. Normally its best to wait out a couple of months. Thats why its good to be a regular customer to a vendor so he/she can advise you which are the better dvds to buy. I was just at my regular dvd shop last nite. I picked out the movie Mr. & Mrs Smith by Brad pitt and Angelina Jolie. The shopowner seeing that I picked the movie, took the movie from me and put it back on the shelf saying its bad quality. If I'm not a regular she wouldn't do that to me and lose a business transaction. But I do find the shop owner services quite good as it does not just applies to me. There was a couple of Indian fellows too looking for DVDs and one ask for Batman the beginning which is the latest movie I guess. The shopowner asked me to help do the interpretation asking the Indian fellow what he wants. I relayed the message to the shopowner saying he wants "Bian Fu Xia". The owner immediately reply that the DVDs came in that day but it was of bad quality and shot in the cinema so she stashed away the DVDs and not selling it probably returning it to the suppliers. I find that very thoughtful of the owner to insist on better quality DVDs for her customers which in turn will return more often and introducing more customers to her. Well at least she have my support as I'm willing to travel from puxi side to pudong just to buy DVDs...hahahahahaha ![]() cheers nongho |

Re: Shanghai "In Conversation" Views, News & Reviews
Hi Frankieman12,
No worries...glad the map can be of some help. I'm not sure whether you can find a map with pinyin like the Singapore street directory. But I'm sure there is. Have you tried out FuZhou lu? Its a stretch of road with bookstores, stationery supplies. A lot of bookshops can be foud along the stretch of road. Something like Bras basah in singapore stretch out. Fu Zhou Lu is located just beside Raffles City. If you come out of the entrance, its on the left side of Raffles City where the taxi stand is. Proceed walking down you will see Coffee Bean. Just keep walking along that road and you will come across many bookshops. The biggest bookshop I think is called "Shangcheng Shu Ju" Book City or City bookshop. Its a stand alone building about 8 storey high. That whole building is full of books! Normally I carry with me a tourist map which you can get it free from hotel or airport or a "Jiaotong" Traffic Map which can be bought at newsvendor for 5RMB. That map is useful enough to travel on major roads or when I'm outside and I'm lost. Then act like a tourist, whipped out the map and ask any chio bu that happen to pass by!!! ![]() cheers nongho |

Re: Shanghai "In Conversation" Views, News & Reviews
Hi Nongho,
vae chiak la va? Thanks for the info, there are some really nice shopkeepers, even in notorius xiangyang maze district, i helped a streetwise young shopkeeper to translate for a couple of swedes for some items. Got me some freebie items and a contact and reference for future purchases, of course as a courtesy I refused initially but the feller insisted. Hey, you seem very knowledgeable on SH policies and market situation, how's the job market like? I'm planning to FO from here and settle there permanently.
