No no no, its not the same fucking turtle story of the kuku island in Singapore, the one in Hanoi is very classic one.. let me tell the story here...

In the olden days, a Vietnamese hero went to the lake and a BIG Turtle surfaced with a sword and asked that Hero to use the sword to chase the Chinese back to China. Hero succeeded and once taske completed, he went back to the Lake and Return-the-Sword to the turtle... therefore the name of the lake... Return-the-sword (in Chinese) lake.

So as u can see... its actually a chinese name... and in the Hoan Kiem district.. the busiest part is made up of 36 small streets... each street starts with the name Hang this and Hang that... for example.. Hang Giay.. Hang Buom.. Hang Tre... these 36 Hang conincides with what the Chinese identifies as the 36 tradtional businesses/trades and also the saying in Chinese.. "36-trades.. every trade produces a king-pin.."
So, the Hoan Kiem Lake, Hoan Kiem District. and temples in Hoan Kiem, and all the festivals in Vietnam, all concides with China culture, because for a long time China ruled Vietnam and has a very strong influence over it.

Yes. You are right. When I saw your post regarding the turtle, I immediately asked my friend in Hanoi whether she went to see people catch turtle. She was very very impressed.

She also told me that seeing the big turtle to surface in Hoan Kiem Lake is considered very good luck. Therefore, every time when the turtle surface, there will be a crowd gathering just to see the turtle. You can find some videos from youtube.
