More floods hit homes near the Night Safari park
Report from The Nation dated Tuesday 15 August 2006 :-
More floods hit homes near the Night Safari park : Mae Hia residents forced to scramble to safety for second time in two weeks Dozens of Chiang Mai residents had to scramble out of their windows to escape raging flash floods yesterday that ravaged their hometown for the second time this month. "With the water rushing in so furiously, it's impossible to open the door out to get out because the torrent was pushing in," one flood victim said. About 30 houses along the Mae Hia waterway were submerged under as much as 1.2m of floodwater for more than four hours early yesterday morning. Backhoes were immediately brought in to enlarge the waterway, allowing the water to flow more easily. The situation had returned to normal by 8am, but significant property damage was reported. "The floods damaged hundreds of electrical appliances. A lot of vehicles also broke down after being submerged for too long," Tanawat Yodjai, the chairman of the Mae Hia Tambon Administrative Organisation, said. He said run-off water from Doi Suthep and Doi Kham had caused the flash floods. With the vast boundaries of the Chiang Mai Night Safari and the International Horticultural Exhibition sealed against floods, running rainwater caused by a heavy downpour could only go down the Mae Hia waterway. "The waterway is also shallower because of encroachment," Tanawat said. He said his organisation had received Bt10 million from the government to dredge the Mae Hia waterway and build embankments. He said the funds would be spent only on critical areas because it would take up to Bt54 million to construct an embankment along one 6km stretch of the waterway. A landslide temporarily blocked the route to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep early yesterday. However, officials had cleared the road by 8am. In the northern province of Lampang, more than 150 houses in Hang Chat district were flooded. Some bridges were also damaged. "We have to repair the bridges otherwise many students won't be able to get their schools," Ban Mae Tan Noi village head Teerawat Sriwanchai said. The flood had subsided by the afternoon. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department said heavy downpours would continue in the North and Northeast. The department urged people in Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Yasothon, Si Sa Ket, Amnat Charoen and Ubon Ratchathani to brace for possible flash floods. --- KatoeyNewsNetwork |

Re: Chiangmai
yup...just got back today and the weather S.U.C.K.S big time. either raining everyday/night or the sun's blazing down your back. no floods noted in cm city though. bro vmtech, sept's the month with the heaviest rainfall and it'll do good if you bring along an umbrella or jacket. its not sexy to arrive in the pubs/discos/joints looking/feeling wet.
that said, plan b didn't worked. no action on queen's birthday...no noteworthy joints are opened. and with the rain, getting through the night market's a hassle! second night, we were at the pubs (with a muay thai boxing ring in the middle) along th loi khro but i was too engrossed in watching LIVERPOOL beat chelski that i missed all the action. different priorities in place, i guess. ![]() on the third night, we didn't want to go too far as it was raining (AGAIN!) that we headed to spotlight a-go-go and it really surprised me on the great selection of gals there. wasted no time and got one to go out (bar fine B500, overnight B1,500 after negotiating down from B2,000). they are really pushy with the ladies drinks, so be careful here. also, pay no more than B1,500 for overnight. dun spoil the market la. ![]() |

Flooding leaves three dead in Nan
FLOOD WARNING !!!
Fellow Samsters who are thinking of making a trip to Northern Thailand in the next few weeks, please note that there is extensive flooding in Northern Thailand at the present moment and that it would be advisable to postphone your trip to the end of the year Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 22 August 2006 :- Flooding leaves three dead in Nan : Residents ill-prepared, rain forecast to persist Floods have claimed three lives in Nan, the worst-hit among the northern provinces, with damage estimated at 600 million baht and likely to increase as heavy rains are expected to persist. According to Nan authorities, severe floods have left three local residents dead since downpours began in the northern province on Saturday evening. Many areas in Tha Wang Pha district and Phu Phiang sub-district were still isolated and affected residents were waiting for food and water. Muang Nan and Wiang Sa districts were heavily flooded yesterday, and there was severe damage as locals were not prepared for what were later assessed as the worst floods in four decades. A number of vehicles were submerged. Most areas of Muang Nan municipality were 50cm to 2m deep water and at least 2,000 families were affected. Search and rescue missions were stalled in Muang Nan as most boats had earlier been sent to Tha Wang Pha district. Children and the elderly were believed to be stranded in their houses. Over 500 inmates at Nan provincial prison in Muang Nan district were moved to a temporary jail on Khao Noi mountain, the highest point in Nan. The local chamber of commerce and industrialists estimated damage to agriculture and commerce at 500 million baht and to tourism and businesses, mostly small ones and in the handicraft industry, at 100 million baht. The weather bureau of the North said rainfall had measured up to 200mm, the highest in 40 years. The Nan river water level was measured at 14m, the deepest in 43 years. The rain did not stop yesterday and floodwaters, especially in Tha Wang Pha and Wiang Sa districts, were rising. Suthep Chankhiaw, an academic at Burapa University, yesterday attributed the flash floods to clusters of heavy downpours instead of scattered showers and to excessive deforestation. There was still flooding in Doi Luang sub-district of Chiang Rai province yesterday but levels were subsiding. Over 500 houses and tens of thousands of rai of farmland were under water. In the meantime, new concerns focused on Phrae province as the level of the Yom river rose to 7.42m yesterday evening and continued to rise. Water run-off from far northern areas and further rains posed a threat. If levels reached eight metres, Sung Men, Long, Nong Muang Khai and Wang Chin districts as well as part of Muang Phrae district would be flooded. Riverside farmland along the Yom river in Song district was under water yesterday. --- KatoeyNewsNetwork |

Re: Chiangmai
Being on this forum for the last couple of years. Though i dont post regularly, I had found really useful info here on my trips to new places I had not been to (HCMC-Vietnam, Jakarta etc.). So I feel it may be time to give something back to this forum and offer whatever little assistance i can for anyone planning to come to Chiang Mai.
I have been in Chiang Mai for the last year and a half so while my knowledge and experience here may not be extensive, I guess it should be better than anyone who has not been here before or for the first couple of times. So if you're planning to come up or already here, do feel free to pm me if you require some help/info. Can meet for drinks and tcss too if we can find the time. ![]() |

Widespread flooding continues unabated in Thailand
Quote:
Better to postpone your trip to Nov/Dec 2006 Don't believe ? Please read on :- Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 28 August 2006 :- Widespread flooding continues unabated in Thailand In the North, there was flooding in Noen Maprang and Nakhon Thai districts of Phitsanulok after overnight rain on Saturday, with water in one village a metre deep. Villagers in Noen Maprang district were warned of possible mudslides. Students and teachers in a local school yesterday rushed to move school equipment to higher areas. Villagers in two tambons in Nakhon Thai district were ordered to move to safety. In Uttaradit province, rescue workers were on alert as water in some canals began to overflow and flood parts of Laplae district after two days of heavy rain. Many villages in Laplae are still recovering from severe floods which hit the area on May. In Chiang Rai province, 20 houses in Mae Chan district and many houses in Muang district were inundated over the weekend. In the Northeast, flooding prevented monks at a temple in Si Sa Ket's Wang Hin district from going on their morning alms round, while 15 nearby houses have been under water for four days. --- KatoeyNewsNetwork |
