What I understand nowadays there are many nasi lemak joints opened by chinese towkay, they rented one of the shophouse unit, do some simple renovation and advertisement signboard, recruit some daring/sexy NLs and allow them to do freelance or permanent massage. Instead the boss will set up a schedule that each nasi lemak to take turn to do counter duty and other minor tasks for a few hours each day. The duty nasi lemak are not suppose to massage and let other working NLs have the chance to massage and earn extra.

In this way the boss save on hiring extra people and can keep overhead costs low. In return, they allow the nasi lemak girls to do extra service and the earnings will all go to the girls, the boss just earn on the massage charges. This made the towkay very senang and the girls are also happy & satisfy, end up in a win-win situation.

There are also another type of nasi lemak joint with no counter duty at all. The NL open the door for you, after you enter she will lock the door. After that you pay direct to her for massage+roam and she will usher you to her cubicle with partition for a "good time". Once the service finish, the NL will accompany you to the hall and open the door for you to go out.
