Bangkok, Chiang Mai - world favourites
Report from The Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 1 August 2006 :-
Bangkok, Chiang Mai - world favourites Florence, Italy, has replaced Sydney, Australia, as the No. 1 city in the world for travelers, according to Travel+Leisure's annual "World's Best" awards. Two cities in Thailand -- Bangkok and Chiang Mai -- were third and fifth. The list of award-winners is based on an annual survey of 23,000 readers who provided evaluations for nearly 500,000 destinations, hotels, airlines, and other travel entitites. Sydney came in at No. 4 on this year's list of best cities. Rome was second, and Beirut, Lebanon, appeared in the top 10 list for the first time -- at No. 9. The survey was conducted before fighting broke out between Israel and Lebanon. New York City was named best city in America for the sixth consecutive year, while JetBlue Airways ranked first among domestic airlines for the first time in survey history. Singita Private Game Reserve in South Africa won for the world's best hotel, an award it also won in 2004. Best large-ship cruise line was Crystal Cruises, while the survey named Yachts of Seabourn as the best small-ship cruise line. The award for best international airline went to Singapore Airlines, while best car rental agency went to Hertz. The Inn at Montchanin Village in Montchanin, Del., was named the world's best hotel in the $250 or less category, while the Inverlochy Castle in Fort William, Scotland, won for Europe's best hotel. The Aerie in Malahat on Vancouver Island in Canada was named No. 1 among continental U.S. and Canadian hotels. The list appears in the magazine's August issue and is also available online at http://www.travelandleisure.com/worldsbest. --- KatoeyNewsNetwork |

Chiang Mai town left inundated after deluge
Report from The Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 1 August 2006 :-
Chiang Mai town left inundated after deluge Chiang Mai - A heavy downpour in the early hours of yesterday left Chiang Mai town under water and paralysed traffic. Officials said 10 large pumps worked all morning to drain water from heavily inundated areas into the Ping river. Waist-deep water was reported in many areas, including Sri Ping Muang. More than 50 smaller pumps were employed in other areas such as Chang Khlan and Chotana. The flooding caused traffic jams throughout the town. Chiang Mai Mayor Boonlert Buranupajorn said drainage was hampered by the overflowing of the Mae Hia stream, which pushed the flood waters back into the town through an irrigation tunnel. One of the worst-hit areas was the residential estate in tambon Mae Hia next to a site planned for a three-month international horticultural exposition. Thanawat Todchai, chairman of tambon Mae Hia administrative organisation, said that the exhibition site's drainage system was still under construction so the flood water flowed out into the adjoining residential area. He said under the drainage plan the water must be drained into Mae Hia stream. In Lampang, a flash flood triggered by heavy rain hit three districts - Mae Moh, Hang Chat and Koh Kha. Chanthip Lasaenlue, 55, was reported to have been swept away by a flood that affected more than 200 houses. The weather officer has warned of more heavy rain and possible flash floods in the northern provinces of Chiang Rai, Phayao, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai and Nan. --- KatoeyNewsNetwork Last edited by KatoeyLover69; 01-08-2006 at 01:57 PM. |

Floods hit Chiang Mai
Report from The Nation dated Tuesday 1 August 2006 :-
Floods hit Chiang Mai : Locals say development, night safari is blocking run-off from Doi Suthep Flash-flooding hit several parts of this northern province yesterday morning, prompting many people to point the finger at the Chiang Mai Night Safari and other new developments. "We never suffered floods until late last year," said councillor Prasit Karbkham of the Nong Khwai tambon administrative organisation yesterday. He was adamant tree clearing in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park to make way for the night safari was the cause. The night safari officially opened earlier this year. "We are now increasingly worried that severe flooding may occur because the night safari is reportedly preparing to build an elephant park," he said. Another resident was afraid the changing environment would bring fatal floods and landslides like those that struck Uttaradit in May. Homes in the tambon of Nong Khwai in Chiang Mai's Hang Dong district were yesterday under more than 80 centimetres of water. Flooding reached many parts of Chiang Mai city. Residents queued up for sandbags at the Chiang Mai Municipality. Tourists were stranded in hotels in Sri Ping Muang. Sandbags formed a temporary barrier for rising flood waters, which were approaching a metre in the worst-hit spots. "This is run-off water from the mountain. It's not like last year when the overflowing Ping River sent floods to town," Mayor Boonlert Buranupakorn said. Hotel operators and Chiang Mai Night Bazaar merchants were keeping an anxious eye on the situation. Last year, flooding ravaged the bazaar and other commercial areas causing hundreds of millions of baht in damage. Chaiyaphan Praphasawat, director of the Chiang Mai-based Community Rights Institute, blamed the night safari, new housing estates and roads, as well as the Chiang Mai University Mae Hia agricultural research centre and an international horticulture exposition for the environment changes around Doi Suthep. "They have changed the water flow," he said. Chaiyaphan was one of the leaders behind the anti-night safari movement. He complained that poor city planning had left Chiang Mai at the mercy of floods. He warned that two villages in the tambon of Nong Khwai were at risk of landslides now that more trees were being uprooted for the development of the night safari's new elephant park. Safari executive Uppatham Pawaputanont argued heavy rain was the cause, not the wildlife park. "We don't have any buildings obstructing water down off Doi Suthep," he said. Surachai Tuamsomboon heads the Suthep-Pui National Park. He jumped to the defence of the night safari and insisted heavy rain since early July meant the land could no longer absorb it. "That's why there is flooding," Surachai said. Downpours continued in many parts of Chiang Mai yesterday. By 3am, flood waters had risen two metres in the Mae Hia Tunnel. Several vehicles were stranded but there were no injuries. "We have closed the tunnel. It will reopen only after we pump out all the water," local traffic police chief Major Chatchai Chuthai said. Flooding and landslides paralysed traffic and a Mai Malai-Pa Pae highway was temporarily impassable to larger vehicles. The Mae Rim River broke its banks and flooded more than 1,000 homes. The weather bureau yesterday forecast more rain for Chiang Mai. It also warned residents of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Phayao and Nan to prepare for flash-floods and landslides. In Lampang, torrential rain brought floods that damaged hundreds of homes in Mae Mo, Hang Chat and Koh Kha districts. --- KatoeyNewsNetwork |

Floods hit business districts in Chiangmai
Report from The Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 2 August 2006 :-
Floods hit business districts in Chiangmai The Ping river overflowed and inundated several business districts in Chiang Mai yesterday. Thada Sukpunnakan, director of the water management centre in the upper North, said the Ping river had risen 7cm per hour yesterday and water levels at Nawarat bridge had surged to 4.3 metres. But, he said, water volume on the Ping river was less than last year. Local authorities and residents on Charoenprathet and Chang Khlan roads have piled more than 200,000 sandbags to prevent flooding. The floods forced eight schools in the city of Chiang Mai to close, including Chairoj Sacred Heart school and Montfort college. Ban Pa Phrao Nok village in tambon Padaed in Muang district was under water and roads to the village were impassable. Bangkok-Chiang Mai rail services were disrupted after forest run-off damaged tracks in Lampang province. Passengers travelling between Bangkok-Chiang Mai needed to take buses to or from Lampang station to complete the journey. --- KatoeyNewsNetwork |
