Re: Tieng Viet lovers club
I am not properly trained on VIET, so i cant explain much to you. I used my experience to translate the sentences...
"With" can be 'voi' and 'cung'.... "nen", i also found from dictionary it is also THEREFORE if she means cant forget, then she shd use "k the nao quen a duoc".... i dun know why she used "nua" Sorry, not to say bad about her, I felt sometimes their sentence construction is not as good as what we think they should be.....

Re: Tieng Viet lovers club
Quote:
Actually, from what i heard from my wife, there is a varied way with which to use the language. It really depends on the situation, the person you are speaking to, the topic and the mode of communication. It really depends. The same word can be used as another way of putting across another idea in another situation. For example, using the language in an sms could be different from verbally speaking to the intended party. There is an element of "casual-ness" in an sms which you dun really use when speaking verbally. Also, it doesn't help that in Vietnamese, the same meaning can be brought across by using a myriad of sentence construction. So i think it does not have anything to do with language proficiency but rather the different exposure to the usage of the language In addition, one word in english can be translated in a few ways in vietnamese. This adds to the difficulty of using the language. For example the word "because" can be translated to "boi vi" or simply "vi" depending on the usage. We will tend to use just "vi" in informal settings like in an sms or in a conversation but in written form, we will tend to use "boi vi" so that its more appropriate. Another example is the word "why". It can be translated as "tai sao", "vi sao" or simply "sao". It depends on how and where you used it in a sentence. I'll just cut and copy from Vdict for the example of different usage below...... Translation: tại sao, vì sao 1.)why was he late? sao anh ấy đến muộn? 2.)why not? tại sao không? 3.)that's the reason why đó là lý do vì sao 4.)not to know why không biết tại sao Lastly, i believe that understanding the "vowels indicator" - the little indicators on top or below of the vowels - is very important. For it really tells you the meaning of the intended word in a sentence. (and we dun have them in a SMS so it makes our translation a bit harder) Sad to say i haven master it! hahaha So normally i will make translation based on the previous msg sent, the anticipated response and the probable replies.... (I think this method quite effective!) Hope my thoughts helps!!!

Viva old Saigon
============ Viva Saigon Food Market serves popular dishes from the three regions - north, central, and south Vietnam - including Hue beef noodles, Vietnamese salads, snails with diced pork and ba ba sweet dessert. The food market is uniquely designed with alleyways, sign-posted from one to eight, reminiscent of village markets or old Saigon. The food stalls even have antique windows, staircases, old long play records and Pham Duy’s song books, which are hard to find in modern HCMC to help create the old-world feel. Located in the largest shopping complex in Vietnam, Lotte Mart, District 7, Viva Saigon Food Market is the place to eat and meet on busy shopping days. Reported by Vinh Bao

Re: Tieng Viet lovers club
Students’ laptops a curse in disguise?
================================= Many university students convince their parents to buy them expensive laptops for school only to neglect their studies for pornography, online games and chat rooms. A third-year business student at Ho Chi Minh City’s University of Economics, Le Duy T., convinced his mother to buy him a laptop by saying that he needed it for research. “Without a laptop, I can’t study!” he told her. But ever since his mother bought him the computer, T. has spent less time studying and more time chatting, listening to music and downloading and watching films. He stays up most nights until 3 or 4 a.m., glued to the screen without spending a minute on his school assignments. Huynh Van Ph., a student at the Ho Chi Minh City Information Technology College told his parents he needed a computer for studying as well. “It’s useful to have a laptop,” he says. “We can access sex websites for free anywhere there’s Wi-Fi,” he says without a hint of irony. A student at HCMC’s Vocational College No.8, says he saves more than VND500,000 (US$29.58) per month playing games on his computer rather than paying heftier fees at Internet shops like he used to. Another student at the college, Tuan A., says he plays games all day everyday. Classmate Thanh T. says “We mainly use computers to play games,” adding that users often find Wi-Fi hotspots so they don’t have to worry about slow connections at Internet cafes. Truong The S. from the University of Economics says he uses his laptop to “save” him when he runs out of money or loses a football bet. “I’ve had the laptop for five months, but I’ve only used it a couple of times because it’s usually at the pawnshop,” he says. Reported by Nguyen Thanh Nam
