You are a previous customer of Girl 3. Girl 3 moves to a new place of work and brings you, her ex customer, over to the new place of work as a paying customer. Given the way the Manager handled customer service with you, I would not have tipped him a single dong. You are the customer. A more customer-oriented Manager (rare in Vietnam but can be trained by not supporting tipping for bad service as an example) would apologize for the inconvenience to you, the customer, at having to switch girls in between due to an unforeseen circumstance. In this case, I would happily agree that he deserves his VND 200k tip. So based on how the events unfolded as you described, I would simply smile, say nothing and offer no tip to him before walking out.

So all in all you spent VND 2.2 M but could have justifiably IMO gotten away with spending VND 1.8 M.

Nationality has very little bearing on a person being a tight ass with his/her contents of the wallet.

BTW, when do I get to see you again???

shit machine gun posting...dpont see apost in a year then come up of the jungle machine gunning...btw i disagree. countries where there is a culture of tipping or where its expected to spend a arm leg wooing a women, they tend to be more generous..in australia its expected to woo a girl over a beer and bbq..nit that it happens much..as such i feel (tho its changing) that aussies try to pay less for girls and things in general..but again that has only a small bearing...but greater than "very little".

I have seen on many an occasion where by men (for the sake of generalisation I shall call them caucasions) leave and not tip, and I am not talking about tipping the service staff.

Too generalized.

Let's not forget what the definition of a tip is. It is a monetary gift for service rendered above and beyond what is expected.

In the US, a 15-20% tip on the bill is customary. Everywhere. Otherwise they chase after you. I was once followed by my waiter out to the street from a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown in NYC because I left a little bit less than the usual 15%. Ridiculous. On the one hand, you are usually assured of good service because they earn minimum wage (USD 6-7/hour) and rely on tips for a living. On the other hand, the system has been abused because everyone nowadays expect a minimum 15% tip even for service that is not exceptional nor 'above and beyond'.

Canada is similar, but in general not as far fetched as the US.

Australia and Europe - in general no service charge but leave a tip if service is exceptional. Otherwise, it is nice to leave a small token (less than 10%) if it is a sit-down meal at a nice restaurant.

But it is true, because we dont have a uniform tipping practice (or tipping definition) around the world, let alone in Asia, the whole practice has been screwed.

IMO in Asia only Japan is the clearest on zero tipping. If a meal is JPY 8240 and you pay with a JPY 10,000 note, you simply collect the whole JPY 1760 in change and they bow in thanks as you walk out.

Just bear in mind Lunar New Year this year is January hor, not February.
