Having anything that is of utility to your social group naturally raises your status within the group, even more so when your ownership is exclusive. If no one in your group has a phone, but you do, people will try to rub shoulders with you as well in hopes to get access to it. Same if it's with food, water, and houses. The scarcer it is, the better your status for having it.
