The Canton Trading system was anOligopoly of Chinese cohongs. Silver was the main currency until it was in short supply. So the handful of Chinese Taipans took payment in Opium. They could have refused, but because of their insatiable greed for wealth, chose to carry on. Then the Triads and gangsters took over the distribution inside whole of China.
