I transferred into Singapore on a promotion from my position in India. Work wise it was pretty easy. I knew the team in the Singapore office well as I had worked closely with them, and had made a large number of visits to Singapore in the past few years. It didn’t take long for me to settle in, and people were very welcoming and accepting. Singapore has a great work culture and I have a huge regard for this country!

There were of course some delightful young ladies on the office staff, but I’m not one to dip my pen in the company’s ink. It’s impossible to exercise your authority when everyone knows who you’ve been shagging the night before ...

I was checked into a rather nice five star hotel when I arrived, and told that I had a month to find an apartment. Easier said than done! Most evenings and all weekends were spent in the company of my agent who patiently took me through the different neighbourhoods and showed me a range of apartments. I had specific requirements which weren’t easy to meet :D

Before going further, I should take a step back and share something personal with you. Sadly, my marriage in India was on the rocks. In my pursuit of success, I had become a workaholic. That left my wife alone for long periods of time. As they say, if you don’t take care of your wife, someone else will ... and that’s what happened. To cut a long story short, my wife declined to accompany me to Singapore, and filed for divorce soon after I got here.

Therefore, even though I was in a great space professionally, I was totally messed up personally. I think I did a great job of keeping my emotions to myself. No one at the office had any knowledge of my personal trauma. Some of my colleagues had met my wife in the past so they enquired about her, but I dodged their questions.

This background is important because it will explain some of the behaviour that I will narrate to you shortly.

Sorry Bro Coolwater, it was the complete opposite! At my budget of about $10k per month, I did not find any landlord unwilling to rent to me. It took time because I was very picky. Maybe what you say is true for cheaper rentals. As for women, read on :D

Apartment hunting, as I’d mentioned earlier, took a fair bit of time and effort. I have to admire my agent’s patience and diligence. He showed me over 50 units before I made my choice. On the one hand I wanted all the conveniences of a good condominium - swimming pool, gym, outdoor space and good upkeep. On the other, I wanted total privacy and discretion. When you are at my level, a lot of people know you - and tongues are always ready to wag with gossip. I was in Singapore without a wife, my marriage was over, there were plenty of lovely women around and I sure as hell wasn’t going to stay celibate. I also did not want news of my activities being carried back to India by my wife’s nosy friends in Singapore, who would love to tell everyone what a depraved person I’d become.

Well, I found my perfect apartment in the end. Private lobby, low rise, minimum interaction with neighbours unless I went to the pool on Sunday, and a few minutes from that favourite expat hangout - Tanglin Mall! I could bring someone into the building and whisk her into my apartment with very little chance of being seen. And the big bonus - no one I even remotely knew lived there.

Well dear readers, I had my job and found my perfect apartment. Now time to turn my attentions to other matters :D

It didn’t take long to realise that Singaporean girls had something special to offer - certainly the kind of girls I met. They had style, were independent, were well travelled and knowledgeable, and had a taste for good things. They were great to talk to - my first language is English, and it was enjoyable to communicate with Singaporeans who spoke the language well. At the same time the SG girls had Asian values and made a good effort to keep their partner happy. Some of you may have had other experiences, and might laugh at my ‘naivety’, but I stand by this view.

Caucasian girls didn’t excite me all, and Indian girls tend to get serious far too soon for my liking. As with most men, I get nervous when women start talking of commitment. The most terrifying question a girl can ask me is “Where do we go from here ?” 😬. Having just ended one relationship, I wasn’t interested in going from the frying pan to the fire.

While these thoughts may be true for you and some of your friends, I can tell you that there are enough girls in SG who are very open and welcoming. I’m too reserved to try and pick up women in bars. That’s never been my forte, and who knows what the hell you’ll pick up anyway. I needed some introductions to eligible women, and was making a mental shortlist of people to speak to about this. Then lady luck dealt me a card... or two 😬.

There are always some days in one’s life that can never be forgotten. Some can be days of immense sorrow, and some are days of great joy. I can never forget that Friday. First thing that morning we received an update on our ESOPs (employee share options for those who don’t know). Our shares were handed out every quarter, and most employees had arranged for them to be sold automatically upon receipt. The company share price was at a high on Thursday night, and we were going to receive a whopping payout within days. 😬

There were big smiles on the faces of all the executives in the office, and we decided that we would meet for a celebratory drink that evening. I offered to host at my club - a very well known, old and prestigious club close to Orchard.

I wound up work a little late that day, and headed to the car park to pick up my car. This was a rental that I was using until I bought my own, and I’m pleased to say that buying a nice car was going to be easy for me after the good news of the morning. I was amazed at the high cost of cars in Singapore when I first heard of it, but after a while one gets used to everything.

As I was about to reach my car, my foot hit something on the ground. I looked down and saw a wallet. To be precise, one of those LV wallets with embossed motifs, which was big enough to be used as a travel wallet. I opened it to see whose wallet it might be, and was quite shocked to see a lot of cash in foreign currency, a passport and credit cards amongst other things.

What was I going to do with it ? I could give it to the carpark security, but didn’t think that was a good idea as there was too much cash in it. I could take it to the police, but then I saw a few business name cards belonging to the same person - Sharon C (all names are fictitious). The lady was a lawyer with a reasonably well known International law firm. There was an office phone number and an e-mail address on the card. I called the number and got a voice message telling me that the office was closed, so I sent her an e-mail saying that I had found some property of hers and gave my hand phone number.

I went straight to the club as I couldn’t be late. I was the host for the evening, and had to be on time to receive my guests. My club does not allow phone usage in the bar and restaurants, so I put my phone on silent when I got there.

My colleagues arrived, and we started off by opening a bottle of bubbly. Some of them brought their wives, and some more spouses joined us as the evening wore on. We were 9 people, and there was a lot of merriment.

An hour or so into the evening I took a personal break. On the way, I glanced at my phone and saw over 10 missed calls from the same unknown number. I promptly called back and the phone was answered by a nervous sounding female.

Me: “Hello, I received some missed calls from you.

She: Yes, I saw your e-mail. Please tell me, have you found my wallet ?

Me: Yes, I have found a wallet. I won’t know it’s yours until you tell me what’s in it, though.

She: I’m Sharon C, and the wallet has my passport, NRIC, credit cards and money in x currency.

Me: Then it is your wallet! I’m out now, but will be happy to return it to you at a convenient time. I work in xxx building, would you like to collect it from my office on Monday morning ?

I could hear sounds of sobbing. Someone was clearly very relieved.

She: I’m supposed to be flying abroad early in the morning. I really need to get my wallet now, or I’ll be in a lot of trouble. Please help me. (She sounded really desperate).

Me: No worries, please come straight away to T club and ask at the reception for me.

I requested the receptionist to call me from the bar when my visitor came, and rejoined my friends.

Jenny was very similar in appearance to her sister, except that she was a little taller than her. I’m 1.80, and with her heels Jenny was about 5 - 6 cm shorter than me. She was slim, had small but perky breasts, slightly curly shoulder length hair, brown eyes, prominent cheek bones, and a clear complexion with light make up. Lovely dimples appeared when she smiled. She wore a short black dress which fitted her well, along with pearl earrings and a simple pearl necklace. Definitely a very, very classy lady! Elaine was similarly dressed, and the girls could almost have been twins!

Sharon C was waiting for me alone in the reception. She stood up as I walked up to her, and introduced herself “ Hi, I’m Sharon C. So sorry to trouble you”.

She was pretty in a “ girl next door” way. Not glamorous, but still attractive. The complete opposite of Jenny. Long straight black hair, spectacles, slim and petite (about 153). She was not dressed to go partying, clearly - she was wearing jeans, sneakers and a loose t-shirt, so one couldn’t make out her figure. She seemed to have a slightly shy personality, and was pleasant and likeable. (I’ll put some photos up soon).

All this is just my quick first impression, because I didn’t spend more than two minutes with her.

She was looking somewhat worried, but that changed immediately when she opened the wallet that I handed to her. A look of relief came across her face, and she looked up at me with an expression of gratitude. Before she could say a word, I smiled at her and said “Have a good trip”, turned and went back to join my group.

I had no reason to stay there any longer. Sharon C was travelling, and surely needed to leave quickly. I was impatient to return to my group, where I had some great company waiting for me. I believe in karma, and that good deeds will bring good rewards to me, and felt pleased that I had helped someone. Her thanks were not needed.

As I walked back, I thought about what I would tell the group about her. I should spin a little story, I thought. No harm in playing along a bit to build my image :D

“So how are you liking Singapore, JJ ?” asked Elaine.

“It’s a great life for an expat, and the work culture is excellent” I said .. “but I don’t have much of a personal life”.

Eliane was sitting close to me as she spoke, and our knees were touching. It was hard to avoid getting turned on. She was wearing a great perfume, delicate and sensual, and she had become even more attractive after a few drinks. I needed to remind myself that she was Roger’s wife.

They came back, flushed and a bit sweaty. More drinks were ordered, then they danced some more. When they came back next Elaine said “JJ accompany me downstairs for a smoke. Roger won’t come with me as he doesn’t approve”. I looked at Roger, who shrugged his shoulders, so I went with Elaine.

Elaine grabbed ny arm and I held it tight to my side as I sensed that she was a little wobbly. We took the lift down, and exited the lobby and crossed to the pavement. “I need a smoke when I’m very high, otherwise I’m fine” she said.

She lit her cigarette while still holding on to me, and leant against me as she smoked. Passersby must have thought that we were a very romantic couple 😂
