From ugly duckling to beauty queen

As a school girl, Jessica Tan could chomp into 10 hamburgers at one go. She was so tubby she had to join the Trim and Fit club, and was constantly mocked by her friends.

But the svelte and lean flight stewardess displays no trace of that ugly duckling as she sashayed her way to being crowned Miss Singapore Universe 2007 at the finals of the beauty pageant last night.

She also won the subsidiary award of Miss Body Beautiful.

Miss Tan, 23, who stands at 1.67m, was a clear favourite with both judges and the public alike.

She was awarded top marks in the swimsuit and evening gown rounds, keeping her ahead of the other contestants.

Judges felt that she appeared calm, steady and comfortable throughout.

A public SMS poll also showed that she was a hot favourite with the public.

And you will probably never guess that she lost 10kg when she was 13 years old.

On being crowned Miss Singapore International, she gushed: "It's really surreal for me. Of course I'm very happy and it's the best birthday present for me."

The flight stewardess, who flies with an international airline, turned 25 yesterday, and friends and family who turned up to watch her crowning moment sang out "Happy birthday" during the show.

On top of receiving $25,000 cash, Miss Tan will be represent Singapore in Mexico City at the Miss Universe International Pageant.

For a girl who was once taunted because of her weight, this is indeed a sweet victory.

A BEVY OF BEAUTIES
There were no surprises in this year's line-up of Miss Singapore Universe contestants.

The other hot favourites were Miss Joey Feng, 23, Miss Christabel Campbell, 19, and Miss Peggy Chang, 21.

Miss Feng, an economics and theatre studies undergraduate at the National University of Singapore, was first runner-up while Miss Campbell, a communications and media management diploma graduate, came in second runner-up.

Miss Feng was also named Miss Photogenic while Miss Celeste Foo, a postgraduate, won Miss Charisma.

Miss Peggy Chang was a New Paper New Face finalist held earlier this year.

During the post event celebration she is well aware of the 'competition' on the world stage and in a way seems well prepared to be ousted on the onset. My earlier rhetoric is markedly on her prospects hereafter. I dont think after being crowned, she would still walk down the aisle serving tea. My thots is in reference to Caldicott. Afterall she did mentioned her wants for a wildlife show of her own. Our local network is one of the few good places to call in for work. It wouldnt be easy as before tho. Caldicott does own one of the top 10 network in the world so they can pick and chose as they damn please.

The tread title reads "Miss Singapore Universe 2007". It was telecast live for everyone on the island, Johor and some say Batam to watch. As you can read my earlier post you can see most of us pin-point and shortlisted the prettiest of the lot. True to the fact, she won. To home in the point, the lass won not one but in two different categories. So what does that tell us or better yet what does that tell the organisers? Simply put Miss Universe is about beauty on the outside. Yes, inner beauty is also beauty but please dont forget 1st impression is what counts. Infact 1st impression is THE main point here. Whats the point having a girl that turn off the guys up there? Dont get me wrong, I believe god creation is wonderful and beautiful but its meant for the eye of the beholder. What that means is one man's meat is another man's poison.

Okay, since I touch based on man's meat and poison. Lets home in on what Miss Universe is really about before we go further.

Miss Universe in a nutshell
The Miss Universe beauty contest has been held since 1952 (not to be confused with the similar Miss World). Founded by California clothing company Pacific Mills to showcase its Catalina swimwear brand, it became part of Kayser-Roth and then Gulf and Western Industries. In 1996 Donald Trump acquired ownership of the pageant, then being broadcast by CBS; in 2003 the television rights went to NBC.

The main Miss Universe Pageant, as of now, is held over a two week period between May-July. In the 1970s through the 1990s, the pageant was a month-long extravaganza. This allows time for rehearsals, appearances and the preliminary competition, with the winner being crowned by the previous year's titleholder during the final competition. According to the organisers, the Miss Universe contest is more than a beauty pageant: women who aspire to become Miss Universe must be intelligent, well-mannered and cultured.

The contestants were judged in swimsuit and evening gown. The contestants also competed in a preliminary interview round in a one-on-one meeting with each individual judge.

So what did I learn. Miss Universe is a beauty pageant and also its more than just beauty. What our organisers fail to understand is that the pageant is 1st and foremost a beauty pageant and WITHIN the shortlisted beauties we seek the best that comes with intelligence, well-mannered and well cultured. In lay-man terms beauty 1st (read the coloured text that I highlighted, its a sentence-level punctuation) than only we talk about the other factors.

Lets make this thread constructive. Hopefully one of the samster is actually one of the ruling member of the Miss Universe pageant.

1) Miss Universe is a BEAUTY CONTEST. Whatever you are looking, 1st impression counts. That 1st impression is looks than body, only than you check out other attributes the lady has. If the organisers have problem defining beauty than get at lease two 18-year old teenage boys in the panel before getting senior panel (ladies especially) question the shortlisted.

2) Problem getting nice looking contestant? Please read our threads on Singapore woman and their wants. Take this logic for instance, if you hang a 'carrot' in front of the donkey chances are it will move towards it. Do a Vanna White gazettes on TV way, way before the pageant just to highlight on the 'carrot' bit.

3) Getting a girl with mouth that cannot cover her upper teeth is NOT beauty! "Sar Nga" or girls with malocclusions do not belong in beauty contest, they belong to orthodontist.

I have shortlisted three. Thats a good enough start for 2008.

Edit: If the organisers want to harp on inner-beauty than change the pageant to Miss Charisma.

don't bother much about what those kids have to say on some prappy mediacorp forums...

i can reveal to you here that there was a full dressed rehersals on saturday night(a day before finals)... judges and the whole works were there... all girls actually got a chance in mock Q & A session... most probably the winners and points were chosen and tabulated on saturday itself already... if all these weren't done before-hand, there would have been alot of work behind the scenes and many possibilities of screw ups during the show...

thats why it appears like the results are already fixed... however the girls knew nothing of it and definitely not their scores... they weren't even able to see the score displayed on the floor because of their positioning and angle...

so i assure you their reactions are 100% original and true...

as for jessica tan being the winner, imho, she deserves it for her looks as she is a cut above the rest... as for her wisdom and speech though, i can't say the same...

It gets better! I believe the spa treatment is only valued at a miserable few hundred at best. At least should give free for a whole year. Well I don't have much opportunity with the young ladies, so its good that you have the choice. When I think about it I just don't think I could handle all the shopping. The shopping drove me fucking barmy when I was younger. Days and days of wasted time spent looking at hand fucking bags and stupid shoes.

My last and only FB for the last 10 years turned out to be an unmitigated disaster. We only had two sessions and she got shitty because I looked at the clock after we finished. She was obviously cut up over me when I stopped seeing her. She ended up smsing and emailing me rude messages until she finally stopped 6 months later. The time spent managing the whole thing was worth more than $20 which is the price I would have paid for those 2 sessions with this lady. u got a FB u can recommend me. A pretty lady thanks. Allan Wu did very well in the final challenge. The final challenge was to stay on a ski board which was being flown over the water by a helicopter. He managed to stay on for something like 2 min 14 sec. The winner was a black guy, stayed on for only 1 or 2 seconds more.

I was very impressed by Allan Wu's performance. He was the real man of the show, having scored the best in the first round and drinking more blended grubs in the second round as compared with all the other contestants. I felt that he should have won. Really did well for Singapore. Unfortunately his monologue for the camera just before the final challenge was not very good.
