what u should look out for :

a. supports real HDMI 2.0 , particular attention to 2.0 not just hdmi or hdmi1.x
b. has lan and wifi features..
c. has bluetooth function to connect to bluetooth mouse/keyboard combo.
d. has usb outputs to connect to usb drive storage.
e. supports HEVC 10BIT encoding. if it supports that, that box will just about play any format.
f. supports 2160p . no matter what terminology used; uhd or ultra 4k etc, 2160P definitively nails it down.

higher end models :

a.look out for ability to install harddisk or ssd
b. look out for 2160P @ 60fps support. the above 2160p mentioned is usually at 24fps.

cpu comes either arm or rockwell, identify a quad core cpu . more expensive boxes comes with dedicated graphics processor (to process 2160p frames fluidly)

I used mi box b4 and installed various apps to watch. Currently I am using Himedia. Both cheap cheap...

I did not bother about whatever resolution, 4k... as long as can install android apps, supports full HD will be good enough.

My Himedia has a memory expansion slot. 2 usb slots for my external keyboard and hdd/memory stick. Connection via hdmi to my old TV, no 4k resolution or whatever but supports full HD. The box comes with chinese apps and google play for ease of app installation.

The problem is with the app providing copyright infringement and box unscramble signals used by pay TV operators.

I subscribe to some paid channels, some free channels, using my box to connect to TV to watch.

I have 3 Android boxes. It works like your Android phone. You download apps and start watching movies, dramas etc. Simple as that. Most boxes come with preinstalled apps. There are tons of things to watch. Korean dramas, HK dramas, variety shows etc. For English movies, I prefer Kodi which should be pre-installed or can be downloaded onto your phone, without the android box.

Go buy one at q10. Cost less than $50. I will skip the handheld remote. It is darn hard to use. Make sure your box comes with USB slots so that you can use a mouse instead.

I think we have the different views on this. I was talking about Android box itself with licit apps or access to legitimate contents, example BBC, youtube, Netflix. Furthermore an android box is like Android mobile, android tablet which allows u to surf the net, facebook, skype chat..... Samsung, Sony, Huawei mobile are like android box but with additional GSM capability :D

My android box was mainly for my kid to watch youtube, various kid channels with a TV set.... not illegal right? Tablet is too small to watch.

In the case of the recent, the box was installed with apps which allow streaming of illegal contents. This particular box also unscramble the signal by starhub and singtel to broadcast the paid contents to customers.

Starhub customer is paying a premium $$ for HBO, EPL per month while another buys this box which able to unscramble starhub signal to provide the same contents, HBO, EPL at a much lower rates per month. Starhub paid HBO and EPL for the contents to resell to its customers. To protect its right of content, it decides to sue and set a warning to other sellers of these boxes....

I been using Android box for more than 5 years, 1st point the box is not illegal. It's works actually the same as android phone. Started with using Samsung S2 install some live TV apps than bought mini usb to hdmi but the HP battery can't last. So I bought a TV box. The apps works more like P2P sharing, so if you watch live maybe it's delay about 1-2mins. Apps, there are many free apps out there. A lot more channel than what starhuX or SingteX offer you but sometimes it lags. There are many FB that share new apps. So there's no real need for paid apps unless they offer you something you can't find. Like porn channels apps. Lastly like you choose a of or new phone, go for more storage and ram.

For those who like to try , w.mobdro.to/ this is one of the best free apps. Enjoy
