My SGP ex's father passed away in 1995, at that time her eldest brother is in CHC liao. her 2nd bro was aso in other church, therefore, in the end she and

i was brought up in a taoist family but i went to a catholic school, supposedly more conservative. one of our teachers then unfortunately passed away while teaching. the priest went to his funeral, spent time praying for him and stuff. taoist funeral mind u. he didnt offer joss sticks but he showed his respect. the other teachers, mostly catholics as well, all carried joss sticks to pay respects. religion is not about processes, it is about faith and belief. although i m not a catholic, now thinking back, this is one of the reasons i respect them so much. emphathy. not fear, not demonic possessions, not propaganda to corrupt the mind.

and why the hell a church needs so much $ to run for these people to come up with a chunk of their salary every month. federal reserves ah? is there no audit committees in such organisations? even temples nowadays have audits, i was involved in one last year, on a voluntary basis. even with that, i can safely tell u, it was messy.

it doesnt happen only with CHC people. most christians r like that. however, we r living in a country where we preach religious harmony. respect and filial piety is still the no.1 virtue in a predominant asian society.

Oh boy, didn't realise CHC had that many detractors. Afterall, since they moved so quickly to Singapore Expo and hardly stayed at their Jurong West auditorium long enough to recover its cost (due to its swelling ranks), I thought they were the ONLY religion around. :D

And of course we do know that interpretation is based on subjectivity and most probably skewed in favour of the deliver. let me put it in perspective for u. u r talking mostly about the monks from the very famous bright hill temple. u wanna know the difference? let me tell u the difference. first of all, it is true that they own mercedes benz. they dont drive around in it. they have chauffeurs. bet u didnt know that most of these mercedes benzes were 2nd hand and sold to them at a cut price from devotees.

but how do they get those $? did they force the devotees to donate their salaries. they get the $ from ang pows from praying for the departed. only one month in a year. besides that, not really cos the donations to the temple would be used for the upkeep of the temple. when they chant the prayers for yr dearly departed, they certainly do not tell u to pay $500 every month bcos they want to build a new temple or they need to feed the turtles there with better veggies!!! they spend 10 minutes chanting and yr ang pow can be $2 for all they care. they have everything taken care of. their chanting will help devotees have peace of mind. some devotees would be more generous, being sillyporeans, can have 4 to 5 digits in the ang pows. but definitely no coercion, no accusations of demonic possessions and certainly no brainwashing cellgroup meetings.

they do spend part of the $ on their transport, but besides that, they certainly dont live in orchard road, they live in the temple. they certainly dont go recording their chanting and try to ask devotees to make them the best selling album, just for their own vanity. they use the $ they have to help worthy charities. when they pass on, u will hear of huge amounts of $ (in the millions) in their bank accounts and all will go to charity. so, my suggestion is, pls dont insult the monks.

More importantly, why was there a need to collect money - be it salary or allowances? Is it part of the teachings in these religions or is it driven by materialism? Many religions forbids the collections of monies or gold when going around asking for alms in their original teachings when it was first founded. Why then did this rule change.

I remember that some religions workers were not even allowed to wear sandals but to walk bare-footed. Why has this changed then?

Not replying on behalf but what i can safely say that most independent church leaders are quite well to do and have substantiate savings in their bank account due to the secular job before they become full-time ministry of God. Otherwise, their family background is able to give the support.

Where they get the money to buy flashy sport cars etc, unless there is proof that it is from their church salary or a gift from someone else or paid for by family members, I would prefer to keep my peace. But one thing for sure, I would agree that it is a lifestyle not worth the compliments. Somesay it's a testimony of how God has blessed them for their committment but I think it's pure vainity and arrogance.
