Ukraine has denied suggestions made in a New York Times report suggesting its Yuzhmash rocket factory may have been involved in the supply of nuclear missile technology to North Korea, pointing the blame instead on Russia.
Citing anonymous US intelligence sources and a report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the New York Times reported on Monday that Pyongyang may have succeeded in making swift progress on its long-range missile programme by obtaining high-performance liquid-propellant engine technology from Ukraine or Russia.
In a Monday statement, Ukraine’s national security and defence council chief Oleksandr Turchynov denied his country’s involvement describing reports making such claims as part of a Russian smear campaign to cover up for its own role.
Mr Turchynov said:
This information is not based on any grounds, provocative by its content, and most likely provoked by Russian secret services to cover their own crimes.
He drew parallels between North Korea and Russia, which forcefully annexed Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula in 2014 and fomented a proxy separatist war in far-eastern regions that continues to smoulder into a fourth year.
Kiev’s pro-western leadership, according to Mr Turchynov, considers the North Korean regime as “totalitarian, dangerous and unpredictable, and supports all sanctions against this country … as well as sanctions against the Russian Federation, the regime of which becomes increasingly similar to the North Korean”.
Mr Turchynov added:
Ukraine completely stopped supplying weapons, military equipment, and military technology to Russia. Ukraine has never supplied rocket engines and any missile technology to North Korea. We believe that this anti-Ukrainian campaign was triggered by Russian secret services to cover their participation in the North Korean nuclear and missile programs.
There was no immediate response from Moscow.
News of possible Ukrainian involvement in supplying North Korea with missile technology comes as the administration of US president Donald Trump mulls whether to provide the country with lethal weapons, including precision anti-tank rockets, to better defend against Russian aggression in its breakaway far eastern regions.
In a separate Monday statement, Yuzhmash denied supplying missile technology to North Korea or Russia.
