SINGAPORE - A Chinese national was on Thursday (June 8) sentenced to three weeks' jail for trying to bribe his way through a driving test.

He had tried to give Automobile Association of Singapore driving tester Noor Hafiz Abdul Aziz $200 to pass his driving test at the Singapore Safety Driving Centre on Feb 22 this year (2017).

Mr Hafiz did not accept the bribe, and the matter was referred to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), the bureau said in a statement on Thursday.

It is an offence to bribe or attempt to offer a bribe in Singapore.

Anyone convicted of a corruption offence can be jailed up to five years and/or fined up to $100,000.

CPIB in its statement said Singapore adopts a zero-tolerance approach to corruption.

"CPIB takes a serious view of any corrupt practices and will not hesitate to take action against any party involved in such acts," it said.
