The Second Minister for Transport already told Parliament yesterday that taxi companies should be allowed to innovate and adapt to new market conditions and competition. This is the clearest sign yet that surge pricing would soon be allowed for the taxi companies.

We Singaporeans just bite the bullet. Soon, not only do we have to face questions of taxi availability, but also fare uncertainty, as fares throughout the day will not be same even if we are going to the same location. With the daily minimum mileage requirement for taxis also having been removed last year, this now seems like a losing situation for commuters. Taxi companies will come out of this as the clear winners.

And with Uber and Grab drivers also maybe having to have provisional taxi licences too, everything point towards taxi companies taking control over the market once again.
