Had a drink with a retiring Japanese acquaintance managing a 'fastener' business.
When our conversation drifted to what his people did at Nanjing, he lowered his head ... he said that most Japanese never considered WWII over, their country is still occupied by invaders (cloaked under one-sided defence agreements that entitles the invaders to base military assets in his home country without control), invader military personnel claimed immunities from local crimes (rapes, robbery, assault, etc of which only a fraction reported and a fraction of that reaching the media), to be successful his politicians need to align with the USA but ordinary Japanese are not anti-China nor forgotten what their Shinto military did in Nanjing. Only crimes committed by low ranking US soldiers/personnel are allowed in the media.
He said that the US never leave a country they invaded .. S Korea, Japan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Germany, Philippines, etc always leaving behind physical military leverages. With a smile he said that Singapore is the exception that is occupied without the need to invade. By invitation. He laughed and said we are "Oroka". Ha Ha ... you guys check it out.
He ended with a hope that 'occupied' Singapore will not suffer the same sufferings and destructions visited upon all such occupied countries. Inevitably, such pawns will be sacrificed with ease for geopolitical advantage.
He even repeated a Chinese saying "It is easy to invite a deity, but difficult to send one off". Good Luck.
