Tonite they at away against Partizan Belgrade,

I can see Sg pool pays well for Mant Utd to win 2.0 for 1x2, worth to try since odds is Man U -0.25

They going to have to travel to play 4 consecutive away games.

I’m going for a draw game... under ole their away form is no eye see, this season I predict Manchester United to be the draw specialist

partizan 0 - 1 man u

bright side: an win finally to improve their away form, held on to the slim lead despite a noisy atmosphere and home side threatening in the 2nd half

brandon williams played well, surged down the left and won a penalty. looks to be an exciting prospect, man u now has two pacy leftbacks

james garner, another youngster gets his chance, overall did not impress as well as williams

minor competitions are a good way to give youngsters their chance to play and gain experience

dark side: another game where man u did not score >1 goal, creativity is lacking due to pogba's absence. martial seems lacklustre, maybe because just back from injury

A win is still a win...but that is the Europa.

Now they should turn focus back to EPL.

Norwich is tricky...they started off quite good but form had dip.
It would be good to be wary of Pukki again.....

I am going for a draw.....again.

Good luck!

didn't expected Norwich so cui....n Man U was given a helping hand from referee with 2 penalties...n yet Rashford n Martial could not convert.
Krul was good, given he got history of saving penalties in World Cup.
This is something OGS will need to fix.....n fast.

Bright spot is definitely D James....his crosses deadly. Reminds me of Beckham.
N McTominay....he did well....n all credit to him scoring the first goal which kind of settle the teams nerves.
Only sore spot it was his mistake to let Hernandez got the late goal.
Bonus is the link up play between Rashford n Martial....2 speedy forwards with the exact same style linking up for the 3rd goal.
Perhaps this is the winning formula?

Great match. Well done, boys!

norwich 1 - 3 man u

bright side: another away win to improve their away form, man u quality is on another lvl, it was almost they were playing at home, have they turned the corner?

mctominay goal was a beauty, he can be a threat from outside the area

james is a value signing, given his price tag in the current environment. showed good vision to pick out rashford for the 2nd goal

third goal was classic counter attack, good inter-play before a clever finish. come december, hopefully man u will be free flowing again when pogba n shaw return (barring any new injuries)

dark side: Un. Believe. Able. two penalties. Un. Believe. Able. both saved by the GK. Un. Believe. Able. Martial was decisive but the keeper guessed right. Rashford think too much liao, should have just picked a spot

reckless tackles by wan-bissaka n young. a stricter referee would have sent them off, a blemish on wan-bissaka's overall good outing

man u got complacent after going 3-0 up, mctominay lost the ball too easily and the way the defenders stood off and gave hernandez space was hair pulling. Un. Believe. Able. they need to cut out such mistakes if they want to mount a serious challenge

In 2 more days,

Chelsea vs Manchester United (away)

Looking at the odds, Chelsea only give Man Utd 0.5 ball.

It seem to lure Us"man supporter " to eat, and pray for a draw game.

My analysis, Man Utd has been travelling, and this is 3rd away game.
There is slight chance ( i said slight chance ) that Man Utd may lose this game but I hope they can beat Chelsea.

chelsea 1 - 2 man u

bright side: a 3rd straight away win is boosting their confidence and overall form

james is becoming a thorn in opponents' side by his direct running, his speed and manoeuvring causes the defenders to commit and foul him

rashford's free kick. what a goal!! the wicked flight path caught out the keeper

dark side: chelsea's goal was unbelievable, credit to batshuayi though. one against three. un. believe. able. and he scored. un. believe. able. man u's back three seems unable to handle speedy players running at them in a counter attack and there is a lack of communication betw themselves. de gea has to be more vocal and direct the defence in front of him. happened at norwich and again at chelsea, such mistakes must be cut out

strangely, ogs only named williams and garner in the squad where more youngsters could have been included, he fielded a strong side for a minor cup

Could it be the players were tired after that Stamford Bridge outing for that Mickey Mouse Cup?

To be frank, this is a 0-0 match. And Bournemouth probably one of the sides who had problems scoring goals for awhile.
At last.....King was allowed too much time in the box to display all the acrobatics. Terrible.

It was nearly 1-1 if....Greenwood knockoff didn't hit the post.....that's life.

bournemouth 1 - 0 man u

bright side: i think james was the one with enterprise, created two chances with his crosses, but his teammates failed to connect, pretty much sums up another off day

dark side: no creativity again, more action down the right via james, but wan-bissaka did not overlap much

felt mata should have started ahead of pereira, who wasnt impressive as a playmaker

the way they conceded the goal was a joke, the defence was all over the place, wan-bissaka became the centerback, where was lindelof???

the season is reaching halfway, think man u at best can only finish top half

https://www.goal.com/en-sg/news/lukaku-equals-ronaldo-goalscoring-record-as-man-utd-loanee/1hsueorc55bpy12uml01ournpj

Lukaku equals Ronaldo goalscoring record as Belgian continues to impress in Italy

The Belgium international put in a match-winning performance as Antonio Conte's side came from behind to beat Bologna and go top of the Italian table
Two late goals from Romelu Lukaku helped Inter maintain their superb start to the Serie A season with a 2-1 comeback win at Bologna on Saturday, and the Belgian has fired his way into exalted company.

With Inter trailing 15 minutes from time, Lukaku bundled home from a corner before converting a stoppage-time penalty to earn his side a ninth win in 11 league games and take them back to the top of the Serie A table.

The goals were Lukaku’s eighth and ninth in the league since his switch from Manchester United, who drew a blank in a 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth earlier in the day.

Don't think it's about tiredness, more like no skill or hunger to score either at close range or at a distance...pple like Young in the team, so old already, not skilful, not fast etc, etc

So sad to see Man U to lose this game, but I can understand that they have tried their best to score in 2nd half. No luck that all.
Don't think it is luck either...luck is only when both teams are closely matched...in this case, like other glorious previous man utd team, they shd hv demolished Bournemouth a minnow team without any problem anytime, anywhere...So where is Charlie and Lawro's prediction of their next match ???...lose agaiin or draw again ???....not win ???....sigh

man u 3 - 0 partizan

bright side: from the highlights, it seemed a one-sided affair with man u creating many chances, they could have thrashed partizan

brilliant goals by martial and rashford

ogs started greenwood and the youngster repaid his faith with a goal, ogs seems to be treating greenwood with care by not overplaying him

overall another good outing to improve their form

dark side: could it be another false dawn? they are currently performing in the UEL but underperforming in the BPL. winning the UEL may be a shortcut into UCL, is that ogs' plan?

If I m not wrong, Brighton is higher in the table than the red devils now. . I go for a draw or a loss again...sigh

no disrespect to brighton and their results so far, i think man u has better quality overall, just that they hit a rough patch and suffered many injuries. man u shld win comfortably at home, but if they play like they did against bournemouth, they deserve to lose and the fans vomit blood again :o

I know it is hard being a Man U fan nowadays....but thats what being a supporter is all about...I had been supporting Man U since Robson days.

man u 3 - 1 brighton

bright side: a good win with man u creating many chances, brighton tried to press high and were open to counter attacks

martial and rashford is forming a lethal partnership with nice link-up play, a hark back to the yorke-cole partnership during the treble season. martial was unselfish and assisted 2 goals, rashford could have scored a hattrick if he was more clinical

james had a v good game, running down the right flank and provided crosses, brighton couldn't handle him and drew two yellows. think he will be an impt player for club n country

the time was right for ogs to give brandon williams a start, overall played well, almost scored and was lucky to escape with a yellow card with a high boot into alzate's torso. he has the potential to be a top leftback

dark side: man u have been playing from the back this season, and opponents are adopting a high press. it might be worrying when spaces are tight and they can't pass their way out

they conceded the goal from the corner, why was pereira tasked to mark dunk? maguire shld be marking him instead. man u cannot afford to make such mistakes!

mctominay suffered an ankle injury, hope he can recover soon as he is one of the better performers so far

tongue in cheek: man u is in 7th place with 4W4D4L, does it mean something to a singaporean? :p

Very good in-depth analysis as always!

#53 Williams looks real good....he got bite...some fire in him this lad.

I had mentioned before the team was a little too dependent on Pogba....guess they now played with a little more belief.

I think Man U got a treasure trove of exciting academy players. Hope OGS can still let them have a go when the regulars come back.

pogba is the main creative player but his youth coach once commented that he is inconsistent. mata has creative flair but he was ineffective in some games, same goes for pereira. man u lacks a consistent creative playmaker ala pirlo, xavi or iniesta, can pereira become such a player? i dun think so, but still hope that he can improve. when pogba returns, a player will be dropped, will ogs rotate pereira and james on the right flank or fred?

yes, youth/academy is playing quite a substantial part currently, hope ogs can sort out chong and gomes' futures asap if he deemed them worthy to be future 1st teamers. amongst the academy players, greenwood and williams have impressed so far, hopefully they can have more gametime

what Man U lack, apart from a main playmaker, is some kind of talisman...player who can rally the team when the chips are down. so far i see none fits the bill.

Yes, I do agree Greenwood n Williams impressed me too so far.
Anyway, I forgot to mention the 'play from behind' style is mooted by OGS.
Personally, Im not really in favor of that seeing Man U have no such ball playing defenders (Lindelof claim he is good at that, but so far he didn't inspired too much confidence when on the ball).
I still stick to the old motto, just clear the damn ball out of that final third.
That is the main job for the defenders.
Maguire n Lindelof isn't the fastest defender...so both should not be playing the ball too much.

Fred got a good game w Brighton. But again he is inconsistent...some matches he just disappear entirely.

imom
11-11-2019, 09:40 PM
Probably Fred's best game in a Utd shirt so far. Much better linking the team and going forward. Guess this run of games is doing him good.

I think it was Scholesy who said this best about Rashford - a scorer of great goals but not a great goalscorer. The number of chances he had.... in the Rooney/Ronaldo days this match would have been 6-1 or 7-1.

That said, goal no.3 wasn't easy to put away. And at the right time to deflate Brighton. Well done.

Martial/Rashford/James looks like it's coming together. At least against cannon fodder teams.

Btw the 7th team which is Manchester United to the 17th team Aston Villa currently is only 5 point diff only...

So I would expect a very tough battle for them this season...

The prob with them is

1)not scoring enough goals
2)lose or draw games they are suppose to win easily
3)entire team switch off mode

...

The prob with them is

1)not scoring enough goals

3)entire team switch off mode

This is a team that is only half-built, with a high dependence currently on academy players. Even Dan James was not expected to play as much as he has.

With a team like this, there will be ups and downs.

Brighton went gungho with a 4-4-2 formation that suited the pace of our forwards and they were duly punished for it. Whenever we regained possession in our half, the counter was lightning quick and Dan James drew two yellow cards because of his pace. Rashford and Martial also got behind the Brighton defence with ease. Basically Brighton played into our hands and allowed us to play to our strengths that day.

When we come up against tight, defensive teams/formations, is when we have struggled. No creative playmaker. And we will continue to struggle until we can have Pogba back firing on all cylinders, and also sign another player in his mould as backup when Pogba is injured. We also have no backup for Martial and Rashford. Also, what happens when Maguire suffers an injury? We are many players away from the rebuild being complete.

So yeah, I am not taking this Brighton game as having 'turned the corner'. There will be many matches where we should 'win easily' but lose/draw. With this current squad it all depends on whether the opponent wants to play football or play counter.

what Man U lack, apart from a main playmaker, is some kind of talisman...player who can rally the team when the chips are down. so far i see none fits the bill.

...

Fred got a good game w Brighton. But again he is inconsistent...some matches he just disappear entirely.

yea, man u has been lacking a talisman ever since giggs/scholes retired and rooney went downhill. i think rashford can be the talisman, he has to be more focused than pogba n lingard

the tempo of english football is too high for the team to play from the back. man u is no barca :o

Probably Fred's best game in a Utd shirt so far. Much better linking the team and going forward. Guess this run of games is doing him good.

...

Martial/Rashford/James looks like it's coming together. At least against cannon fodder teams.

both fred and pereira played well against brighton but not so against bournemouth. they have to be more consistent against lesser teams, otherwise they are squad players at best

rashford is still young, so he has room to develop/improve and fulfil his potential. he can take pointers from ogs who is a striker himself

Btw the 7th team which is Manchester United to the 17th team Aston Villa currently is only 5 point diff only...

...

1)not scoring enough goals
2)lose or draw games they are suppose to win easily
3)entire team switch off mode

from another angle, this season will be exciting to watch, isn't it? leicester is 2nd and sheff utd is 5th! compare to bundesliga (past) where its either bayern or dortmund, or la liga (past) where its either barca or real, its predictable. this season is pool's to lose, city may not finish 2nd and a scramble to finish 3rd/4th for UCL spots

when the players return from injury and ogs has a full squad to work with, we should see more goals, man u has started scoring more since martial returned. but as usual, ogs has to work on 1. cutting out mistakes (defence has to be more decisive and less nervy), 2. maintain their concentration levels, and 3. kill off the game when they take the lead

Basically Brighton played into our hands and allowed us to play to our strengths that day.

yes, agree. as long as man u isn't in UCL, the chance of signing top players is low. even if they get into UCL, the player's asking price gets jacked up once they are linked to the club. i feel a reliance on youth will pay dividends down the road when they improve and become consistent, this core of youngsters can challenge for the BPL/UCL in 5 yrs maybe?

nowadays, opponents don't fear the current man u as much as fergie's. brighton thought they can collect a scalp but was overrun instead. man u won 3 in a row before losing to bournemouth, its the inconsistency that causes blood vomiting

ogs mentioned that he may not sign anyone in january, hope he can sign at least 3 players in the off season: a "zlatan", a "herrera" and a "pirlo/xavi"

Frankly speaking at 2 goals down,
I was going to give up and sleep....then #53 Williams scored!!
And I was thinking...nah.....it won't happen...then saw Greenwood come in....
4 mins later......2-2!! Im totally awake now n can see the visiting Man u fans in the stands roaring!
2 mins later, can't believe it! Rashford put Man U in front!
3 clinical goals in a space of 7 mins! Totally fanstastic!
These youth academy players are giving the regulars a wake up call!

But OGS makes the foolish mistake of putting light weight Perreira n Fred as CM. I saw it n I was like wtf! Confirm will struggle.
And I was proven right. Midfield overrrun and the 2 goals were inevitable.
Seriously, this is where the pitbull Herrera n probably Afro head Felliani is missed.
Really need a strong robust player in the center of the park.
Think even McTominay will do ok.

Pity about the final goal....but I guess 3-3 was a fair result for both sides.

Great fightback from the Red Devils! Led by 3 youth academy players.
I can clearly see Old Fergie was smiling on the stands!

ogs respected sheff utd too much and got his formation wrong, the 1st half was frustrating to watch, the back 3 were overrun and the midfield duo couldn't string a few passes together. the front 3 were starved of service and couldn't muster a shot on goal

2nd half: when ogs reverted to a back 4, things improved and williams sparked the fightback, 3 goals in 7mins was exhilarating to watch! alas, they couldn't hang on and allowed the home side to equalise, credit to sheff utd spirit

haiz... again no creativity, no bite in midfield, did not cut out mistakes

ogs is putting massive faith in youth, this core has a bright future

ps: ogs seems to have an agenda against matic, did not play him bcos he is too slow??

I think the OGS way to counter the lack of creativity is to play quick 1-2 and fast breaks. Hence the reliance on youth n speedy players such as D James, Martial n Rashford.
Before the match, the pundits were saying the 3 speedy forwards will pose a problem for 37 year old Phil Jagielka playing for the Blades.
But the first half proves otherwise. :p

I thought Matic still injured? Anyway, OGS is grooming McTominay as DM.
Matic is getting old n at times lazy.

With the emergence of #53, old timers like Young will have to make way.....and maybe Mata....n Jones which again proved to be a jinxster.

ya, which is why i felt ogs got his formation wrong in the 1st half. by playing a back 3, there is one player less in midfield/attack. we saw that fred and pereira kept misplacing passes, the back 3 pushed up and tried to create plays, wtf??? when ogs reverted to back 4 in the 2nd half, they pressed higher and sheff utd did not have the composure and ended up ceding possession often. man u could pass better and scored 3 quick goals

man u has 2 ways to play: back 4 with high press against non-flair teams, back 3 with counter attack against flair teams

latest, matic is back to training, but even when he is fully fit and pogba out, ogs did not field him. he is experienced and won't lose possession so easily, u need someone who is composed and tidies things up in midfield, fred & pereira are too lightweight to hold up the ball. mctominay has impressed so far but is injured, estimated to be back in dec

williams is an exciting youngster and can challenge shaw. yes agree, young and jones can be let go, mata be a coach maybe?

This club is in Kazakhstan. Probably the furthest European game the club had to fly to.

United should win if stick the 2nd half formation at Bramall Lane.
Drop Fred n Pereira.
Need a hard man in midfield....should give Matic a chance.
plenty of fleet foot fire power upfront. no worries on that.

Again correct.
Villa was outstanding and Jack Grealish was an inspiration.
But then any mediocre teams coming to play at Old Trafford will at least go away with 1 point. Or bonus 3 pts.

Not good w analysis but Villa always look dangerous when they go forward.

poor performance at home, midfield was too soft and defence was too nervy, martial's chip was too heavy at point blank range, pereira failed to close down on grealish fast enough for the first goal. haiz... 想吐血

why is ogs persisting with playing out from the back? he doesn't have the personnel to do that and man u is no barcelona

why is ogs fielding fred and pereira in center midfield? it is evident that both are lightweight and cannot hold up the ball, whenever they lose the ball, the opponents can counter and put pressure on the defence. their assists last night doesn't disguise the fact that they are too soft in center midfield. either play matic when he is fit or give garner/levitt a chance

why isn't grealish man-marked and was given time and freedom on the ball? he is obviously the playmaker yet ogs did not assign a player to hound him down. oh, bcos man u let herrera leave on a free (tmd ). grealish is being linked to man u and we got to see why, he has abit of pirlo vibe, aston villa may have to work hard to fend off interest. which of the top 6 will sign him first?

Played like they were on fire for the first half hour. Maybe extra adrenaline cos playing against old boss... :D

Rashford's first goal really should have been saved by the goalie but luckily for us he was undone by the bounce. Guess he redeemed himself with the save from Rashford's brilliant strike moments later. That would have been some goal if the goalie hadn't got that ever-so-slight touch to palm it to the crossbar...

City is a totally different proposition, especially at the Etihad and Solskjaer is definitely going to be trying damage limitation + counter attack. Doubt it will succeed though.

I think red devils may even draw or win the game this weekend against their noisy neighbours if they played the way they did in their last game cos city's defences is weak, they are prone to letting in goals....so my guess is 3-2 or 3-3 in utds favour

Never thought I would be saying this, but thank you very much United:cool::D

Wow dinno they can improve so much in such a short time !!!.:).. you are right this time!
i wasn't expecting a 2 goal cushion so early in the game and if not for Ederson heroics, it would be 4 or 5.
the front trio of D James, Martial and Rashford were going pass the City backline with ease.
but also much thanks to the 3 VAR decisions which went in Utd way.
Fred this time looks better with McTominay n Lingard alongside him.
also credit to the back 4.

Good job!

Good job!

what a derby game, nail-biting until the final whistle

man u had a blistering 1st half with counter attacking play, rashford is in hot form and could have scored more. he is more suitable to be deployed on the left than martial. 2nd half was all man city as they tried to get back in the game, they were incisive but their finishing cost them and man u had DDG to thank. good work rate and defending overall and man u was lucky with VAR calls

some gripes though:
ogs is still insisting to play out from the back, they couldn't pass their way out of city's high press and kept conceding possession, lindelof got caught (heart attack moment ) but wan-bissaka bailed him out. mctominay sometimes stray out of position and created holes in midfield, fred is still lightweight, lost possession at the D (another heart attack moment )

the team needs to improve their defending on set pieces, wan-bissaka let otamendi got better of him

ogs has to continually work on cutting out mistakes and improving consistency (against teams outside top 6), in time this young team will mature and challenge for BPL/UCL

Thank you for the in-depth analysis again.
Yes, agree many heart stopping moments when the defence dilly dally with the ball failing to clear the ball out.
Terrible!

Special note is player abuse rear it's ugly head again. Poor Fred was hit at the back of the head with small objects when taking a corner.
Camera showed many small projectiles deposited at the corner flag.
Culprits looked to be City fans.
Should start docking pts where it hurt most.

Many of us feel the same way.....but I believed Ole is going to be "at the wheel" for the moment.

He got a few strong reasons behind him.
1. Long injury list for regulars
2. Promote attacking football which fans loved to watch
3. Finalised the concrete attacking trio of Martial, Rashford n D James.
4. Bleed good academy players like #53 and Greenwood....and astute signing of electric D James.

Not saying he is good, but there positives in which many are able to see.

In addition, will changing to Poch at this juncture will help Utd? LVG and Mou.....tried but still fail. These 2 should be consider world class right?

Take the case of Liverpool, they stick to Klopp and now are reaping dividends. The first few years we are still branding him as Jurgen Flopp...now no more.:D

I suspect Fergie has a large part to play with keeping Ole at United. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Fergie peppered Ole with instructions with respect to the last 2
big games.

Btw talking about Ole still being "at the wheel", catch the first bit of this United Stand you tube video:rolleyes::D

4 goals in 10 mins shellshocked the away side, young caused a heart attack, good stage to give youngsters chances. so far, greenwood and williams are breakout performers amongst the youngsters

although man u may not win anything this season due to inconsistency, i have high hopes and confidence that this group of youngsters will win something, it may be as soon as next season

last night was facepalm vomit blood with two mistakes and wasted chances

the lack of urgency when they play teams below them has been endemic all season. they know what to do when flair teams come at them: absorb pressure and counter with speed, but they don't know how to break down opponents who sit back. it seems that ogs has ingrained only one mode of playing

when pogba came on, there was more flow and chances. he has the vision and range of passing to pick out attackers' runs, which mctominay and fred lack. ogs refusal to play matic is why the midfield is soft and prone to being overrun, i think the midfield trio of mctominay, matic and pogba is the optimal combo

they don't know how to shoot long n high balls like poopa did last nite to make their enemy defence panic n then can score goals...omg !...if cannot penetrate their enemy's defence by just passing about, then kick those long and high ball lor... lidat oso must teach him how to play his team

A rare dominant win against Newcastle, rather than a counter-attacking/sucker-punching one. Albeit being gifted twice by Newcastle (they were in a xmas giving mood I guess :D ) Could have been 5 or 6 and Martial was unlucky not to get a hat trick. Pogba looks lively but just lacking that match-sharpness while being eased back into action.

Rashford+Martial+Greenwood look like they should be the permanent front 3.

And guys, relax lah... This is obviously a team that is thin on backup, that is being rebuilt. It is expected that results will be inconsistent and frustrating. Especially since a key player has been out for months.

The previous recruitment fucked it up so badly over 6 years and it cannot be undone in one transfer window. OGS has only had one summer to recruit so far and he has done reasonably well. Expect two more windows of recruitment before we can build a consistent top-4 team and another two more to build depth to a team that can challenge for the title. You can identify transfer targets but you can't get them all in one window. And in the past 6 years we have seen too much panic and marquee buying - I think OGS' buying policy is better, but he just needs time. SAF took 3 years to win one FA Cup and 6 years before he won the league for the first time.

newcastle's goal: when fred lost the ball (again) and newcastle countered, the defence was all over the place when being run at. when longstaff scored, siao liao, here we go again (haiz)

man u's 1st goal: good build up play on the left

2nd goal: gift from newcastle, brilliant finish by greenwood

3rd goal: wan-bissaka's cross is a dream for any targetman to power it home. he has to make more forward runs down the right and put in more crosses, same goes for shaw

4th goal: 2nd gift from newcastle, martial finished coolly with a chip, could have scored a hattrick

its a big worry that mctominay suffered an injury, this time knee ligament, he might be out for quite some time. i have no faith in fred and pereira in center mid, matic must be recalled

yes, ogs needs more transfer windows to properly put together a squad. when u look at the squad, pogba is the only one who has the vision and passing to pick out attackers' runs, but what happens when he is injured? in the past, scholes/beckham or scholes/rooney would usually playmake, at least there was an alternative. if pogba is out, there is no alternative. ogs has to sign 1-2 players who possess vision and passing, but its likely they don't come cheap or they don't want to join man u at all, then ogs has to develop from within. its rumoured that ogs will sign erling haaland, if true, he may be a good targetman and ogs' plan b

Yep, a creative playmaker as backup or rotation with Pogba is a must. That is one of the positions Solskjaer has to recruit for. Apparently they think James Maddison is the one.

Erling Haaland - he would be a good catch but definitely not the finished article yet. Latest rumour is that the most-hated agent Mino Raiola is engineering for him to move to Juve instead.

The general principle for a title-winning/challenging team is to have two world-class players in every position. Right now we probably have only 4 players or so who are automatic starters for their national teams. Let alone 2 for every position. SAF days, we had almost the whole first team away on duty during international weeks.

For me Pogba and martial are not up to the standard yet... they can’t change a game and certainly they are not match winner! Especially for Pogba I dun even think he is world class.... without him in Juventus or France team,u think they can’t win title or the World Cup? He just in a team with much more better players around him...

And for ole just my pov I think he not the right guy to Manchester United to another level... he just being mr nice guy to everyone! My prediction will be 6-8th position this year in the league table for us...

burnley 0 - 2 man u

good away win and finally a clean sheet. from the highlights, pereira pressed and caused the defender to make a mistake and the result was a cool finish by martial. i think this is the way to play against non-flair teams, back four with high press, pressuring the opponents to make mistakes and then quickly counter. 2nd goal was also from a counter attack, nice pass by james to pick out rashford

maddison might not come cheap, there are rumours that jack grealish is wanted as well. another alternative to pogba must be signed, fred/pereira don't have vision and passing range

we shall see how the haaland situation will unfold. if he joins juve, ogs still has to sign a targetman nevertheless. its an alternative to their current tactics, when u only play one way, opponents will find a way to neutralise: already in several matches, we saw the midfield misplacing passes, the defenders pushing up to make things happen, the attackers running with ball into 2-3 opponents to force the issue

despite the inconsistent performances so far, martial and rashford have reached double figures in goals. to extrapolate, martial may hit 15-20 goals and rashford may hit 20+ goals by end of season

The deal they got was good, if the fee is to be believed. Unfortunately for Utd, his agent is the greedy Raiola. Apparently the Haaland+Raiola camp wanted too many clauses and payouts that Utd couldn't and shouldn't stomach. Dortmund, if the press is to be believed, agreed to some ridiculous clause that sell-on profits be split between club, Alfe-Inge Haaland and Raiola. Utd apparently also couldn't stomach a buy-out clause that was demanded.

Raiola basically wants to flog Erling Haaland as many times as he can - each transfer makes him $$$. That's why he rather Haaland goes to a 'stepping stone' club first, as he is only 19 and good for a couple of transfers more, if his development continues as expected.

with the season halfway thru, here is my review of the squad performance so far with a football manager element :p

GK
david de gea (key player) - overall dependable when called upon, although not helped by a nervy defence in front of him; made a rare mistake against watford; needs to be more vocal and commanding of his defence; 7

sergio romero (backup) - decent backup to DDG; fielded in UEL; 6

Defence
harry maguire (key player) - above average performance; traditional engligh DC; uncomfortable with attackers direct running; has ventured further up to try and make things happen but he is the slowest defender, better to sit back and let lindelof venture forward; 7

aaron wan-bissaka (1st team) - overall good performance; times his tackles well, except at watford; needs to make more forward runs and put in more crosses; 8

victor lindelof (1st team/rotation) - below average performance; seems to be unable to handle the physicality of big forwards and attackers direct running; needs to improve his positioning and marking; bailly will provide competition when he returns; 5

luke shaw (rotation) - average performance; needs to make more forward runs and put in more crosses; 6

phil jones (backup) - did not grab his chance when given a starting berth, ogs also at fault with the wrong formation vs sheff utd; tackling can be rash; at 27 he should be in his prime, but sadly a backup; 4

ashley young (backup) - aging; decent crossing/set piece; suspect positioning and marking; 5

brandon williams (hot prospect) - played well when given chance; more incisive than shaw, at this rate, he will threaten shaw's place; 6

Midfield
paul pogba (key player) - man u sorely missed his creativity, vision and passing range; ogs is easing him in after 3mths out; needs to improve his consistency; 6

scott mctominay (1st team) - above average performance, a certain starter when fit; needs to improve shooting; 7

nemanja matic (1st team but ogs deem him a backup :() - i feel he is unfairly treated by ogs, he may not be pacy but he is composed, tidies things up, can hold the ball and provides cover, ogs' refusal to play him is causing the midfield to be soft and prone to overrun and expose the defence to unnecessary pressure; 6

fred (rotation) - overall inconsistent; the good: passing vs man city; the bad: lightweight and cannot hold up ball, lack of vision and passing range; needs to pair with a strong MC in center midfield; needs to improve on vision, passing, shooting and strength; 5

andreas pereira (rotation) - overall inconsistent; the good: the pressing and assist to martial vs burnley; the bad: lightweight and cannot hold up ball, indecision, lack of vision and passing range; needs to improve on vision, passing, shooting and strength; 5

daniel james (rotation) - shrewd 15m signing; full of energy and direct running, opponents have a hard time coping with his pace; also helps in defence with high work rate; ogs must not to overplay him; 8

jesse lingard (rotation) - off-field issues affected his form big time; needs to sort things out and focus on football; 3

juan mata (backup) - aging; supposed to be a creative playmaker but did not impress when fielded; tried to make runs to stretch the defence; 4

Attack
anthony martial (1st team) - decent output with 10 goals and 3 assists; finishing and heading can be improved; 7

marcus rashford (1st team) - fast becoming a key player for man u and he is only 22; good output with 16 goals and 5 assists; heading can be improved; 8

mason greenwood (hot prospect) - used as an impact sub, has scored 8 goals; invaluable experience in UEL; 7

eric bailly, marcos rojo, diogo dalot, timothy fosu-mensah recovering from long term injuries

angel gomes, james garner, axel tuanzebe, tahith chong, ethan laird, dylan levitt are youngsters and developing

wishing all a happy new year, hope man u have a better 2020 ahead :D

here is my opinion of areas of possible improvements :p

GK
DDG will still be No.1 for the next 5 years, with romero serving as a decent backup. Man u doesn't have a history of a homegrown GK breaking into the 1st team, so its likely they will sign a GK when DDG retires

Defence
bailly will compete with lindelof, jones/rojo serve as backup. if fosu-mensah and tuanzebe can break into the 1st team, ogs may let jones/rojo go, but if they cannot reach their potential, ogs may need to sign a DC. dalot/williams can serve as backup when ashley young leaves

Midfield
needs to be improved the most. the squad needs another creative playmaker to be an alternative to pogba, a set piece specialist and a pacy DMC as ogs deemed matic a backup. gomes, chong, garner and levitt are knocking on the 1st team door, will take time to impress

Attack
ogs needs to sign a targetman to serve as a plan B and be an aerial threat at set pieces. having only 3 attackers without cover is not pragmatic

Tactics
playing out from the back - we have seen that when man u play out from the back, opponents adopt a high press and possession is lost too often, sometimes near the box which is too close for comfort. DDG has good distribution, so if there is a targetman, the ball can be punted further upfield to relieve pressure

offensive set pieces - man u used to be lethal, but not anymore. the current free kick takers aren't beckham, and there is no targetman to aim at during corners/free kicks. set pieces are a good option when opponents park the bus

defensive set pieces - the set up during corners is weird: defenders zone mark the 6-yard box while small midfielders are tasked to mark the tall opponents. a few times already, we saw that fred/pereira lose their man and resulted in goals. i feel the DCs should be marking the taller opponents instead of zonal marking

against non-flair teams - back 4 with high press: non-flair teams don't really have the guile to pass their way out, hence more likely to commit mistakes and man u can quickly counter (vs newcastle & burnley). however this style is done at a high tempo and its energy sapping for the players, so ogs has to rotate his players

against flair teams - back 3 with counter attack: set up beautifully by ogs, the gripe is the composure and finishing by rashford/martial, and cutting out defensive mistakes when absorbing pressure, flair teams will make them pay

Didn't know this 19 year old shot is the son of Alf-Inge_Haaland....guess he is too well versed with the workings of the transfer market in EPL and want a piece of the pie.

with the season halfway thru, here is my review of the squad performance so far with a football manager element :p

wishing all a happy new year, hope man u have a better 2020 ahead :D

here is my opinion of areas of possible improvements :p

As usual, very in depth analysis.
Pity about Matic....becoz OGS favors high tempo speed passing game.
This proves to be Matic downfall.
But not playing him and put in the soft centre pairing of Fred and Pereira....even worst. As clearly evident in the Sheffield Utd game.

Lindelof had always been suspected ever since he came on board. But he had since improved and got a good performance last season.
Unfortunately, OGS preferred method of playing from the back took a toil on him. His frailties in covering back had been exposed cruelly many times.
It also doesn't help that Maguire is also equally slow.

Midfield and Defence is the problematic areas now.

With the addition of D James and Greenwood....the impact of losing LKK appears to have lessen tremendously.
With the failure to sign Erling Haaland, Greenwood proves even more vital.
This guy is humble and had proven to be a sharpshooter.....saved Man U several times. A bright prospect that needs nurturing.
No Haaland....no issue...Greenwood is here.

Another crash down to earth early this morning against Gunners 2-0 :mad:...looks like more crashes to cum by end of season :( if they don't recruit new players in this january transfer window...these idiots blow hot and cold all the time n the manager can't train and motivate them to perform well :(...worst of the lot is Maguire n matic..too fat or too old maybe in the case of matic, can't run fast enough...losing the ball ever so often to the opposition...not sure why they bot Maguire from Leicester for such a big sum ??...got to shift the deadwood out b4 it is too late :(...the problem is as much with the players as it is with the manager with no idea and inspiration to come from behind like the previous teams had :(

matic usually acts as a shield and mops things up, his presence won't expose maguire/lindelof to attackers running direct at them. when matic did not play, we saw that fred/pereira lose possession too often and opponents quickly counter and run at the DCs. last season, mourinho would field mctominay-matic-pogba in midfield, this combo is optimal as mctominay & matic would do more defensive work as pogba is the main creative force. but now, the midfield is hit with another injury crisis as mctominay is expected to be out for 2mths and pogba 1mth, fred/pereira don't inspire confidence. it might be time to give chances to garner/levitt

i still think ogs needs to sign a targetman. rashford/martial usually operate by running onto the ball, they don't play with their backs facing goal. if the opponent sit deep, they will just be running into 2 layers of wall, which has been ineffective. a targetman can fulfil various options: aerial threat for crosses & set pieces; GK can punt the ball to him to relieve pressure from opponent's high press; he can provide knock-downs for teammates to run on to or shoot at goal; he can pull his marker out of position for a pacy teammate to exploit the gap. right now, man u's aerial threats are maguire/lindelof, so when they are tightly marked, man u's set pieces don't pose a threat. greenwood's playing style is similar to rashford/martial and he is used as a backup. so far, man u has been pretty one-dimensional with no plan b, opponents can just defend deep and man u struggles to break them down because the ball usually ends up with rashford/martial to dribble down the left and also, no other player can pass like pogba to pick out attackers' runs

Losing 2-0 to Burnley at old Trafford? Wow

No way Ole Solskjaer thinks Man United is close to Liverpool this season. He simply have no idea what he is doing. 30 points behind is no where near. Even Man City is no where near Liverpool.

Spending high transfer fees on Macguire, Wan-Bissaka and James and these guys may not be worth the money and don't think they deserves to wear the shirt. Best player Rashford don't cost that type of money and sadly over-played gets injured easily.

Since Solskjaer was made permanent manager in March, Manchester United have now lost more Premier League games than they have won, taking just 42 points from a possible 96. It's fewer than Wolves, Crystal Palace and Everton and it raises serious questions over their direction.

Man United needed someone like Guardiola, Klopp or clone of Sir Alex. I hate to say Man United will take longer to improve and will be mid table team for many more seasons no matter which players they bought if they don't get a good coach.

Eric Cantona was good after Sir Alex mentored him.
Roy Keane was a nobody if not Sir Alex.
Many more examples.

based on form, neither are good: man u WLWLL, wolves LLDWL. man u may have a slight upper hand as they are playing at home, but i think wolves will park the bus and frustrate them. as rashford is out, man u doesn't have their main attacking threat, and if martial doesn't step up it could be a low scoring game, either 1 - 0 or a blood vomitting draw/loss

i wouldn't say fernandes is a panic buy, he is signed because man u lacks an alternative to pogba. fred/pereira lack vision and passing range and mata is on the wane. top 4 is unlikely this season as chelsea/leicester are better so their best bet into UCL is via winning UEL

even during fergie's reign, he also did not manage to sign the players he wanted: gazza, shearer, ronaldinho. players choose not to move to man u for a variety of reasons: strong loyalty to original/boyhood club; playing style; the contract isn't lucrative enough; lower squad status/reduced game time; other big clubs potong jalan. and there is no guarantee that a world class player will perform when moved to a new club: shevchenko (ac milan>chelsea), torres (pool>chelsea), kaka (milan>real)

since the treble, man u have wanted to make statement signings, but not all panned out, like juan veron, fergie changed his formation in order to accommodate him and somehow the team started playing nervily against teams they would normally win. realistically speaking, UCL is a big factor to attract players, if man u can't achieve UCL, top players may not even bother, so ogs ends up signing players who are attracted by the contract/brandname. i think ogs may have to look to scandinavian players to improve his squad depth and sign players who give all for the team rather than start a collection of galacticos

next, the pogba saga is bs nonsense. i think he is trying to pull a rooney where he scores his last big contract which allows him to coast to the end of his career. ogs has to be decisive with pogba like how fergie with CR7. CR7 made it clear that he wanted to join real madrid but fergie convinced him to stay for another season and after that he honoured his word. i vote to let pogba go so that there is no distraction of "will he won't he" drama @#$%^&*

there is good reason why SAF boot this chap out last time.

but the final decision will mainly hinge on how well the new boy Bruno F will gel into the team and whether he will fill in the creative void which Pogba excel in.
Bruno seemed to have some chemistry w Fred.....

actually another player should be axed should be Martial. Yes, he got the important opening goal at Stamford Bridge...but apart from that, he is simply lazy.....not just that match but many matches.
tendency to lose possession is....alarming
with Ighalo in, more play time should be given to the new guy while Rashford n Greenwood are recovering from injury.

DDG also should be given a wake up call. His form is definitely dwindling. Recall loanee Dean Henderson.
But this young chap had worked his way up to #1 in Sheffield U currently.
So, not sure whether this is good idea if first team regular is not guaranteed.

OUT List
Lingard - likes to showboat and most times dunno wtf is he playing
P Jones - nuff say....once he is on, trouble
Lindelof - his style of ball playing at the back is "terrifying"
Mata - he is good...but just too slow
Periera - no place for him, sorry

now that u cued it, lets do a segment on who to stay/go :p:D

GK
overall a tricky situation for ogs, there is a glut of keepers at the club. DDG signed a new contract, nathan bishop was signed, dean henderson on loan at sheff utd. if ogs wants to rebuild, he has to take a giant leap of faith with henderson as No.1, but on the other hand the dressing room will lose another senior figure...

DDG - stayed on despite no BPL/UCL honours since 2013, the contract was a reward for his loyalty perhaps? overall still a top keeper despite some rare mistakes. verdict: GO if another club comes for him

sergio romero - decent backup keeper. verdict: STAY

lee grant - veteran backup to romero. verdict: GO when contract expires

dean henderson - established as No.1 at sheff utd, i vote for taking that giant leap of faith to be No.1 at man u, BUT another club has to sign DDG first. verdict: GO on loan if DDG stays, STAY if DDG leaves

joel pereira - has been sent on loans, not much news on him. verdict: GO as it seems like he didn't reach full potential

Defence
victor lindelof - retrain to MC to reduce heart attacks to the fans, otherwise a backup DC. verdict: GO if another club comes for him

eric bailly - unlucky with injuries, pacy DC to partner maguire. verdict: STAY

phil jones - injury prone, a 1st-teamer at a bottom half club. verdict: GOOO

harry maguire - top defender, threat at set pieces, has to be paired with a pacy DC. verdict: STAY

chris smalling - out of favour, a 1st-teamer at a top half club. verdict: GO

marcus rojo - part of ogs' clearout, good defender and sad to see him go. verdict: GO

diogo dalot - unlucky with injuries, still young and developing. verdict: STAY

luke shaw - good pacy DL, attacking aspect is meh though. verdict: STAY

timothy fosu-mensah - doesn't seem to reach full potential. verdict: GO

aaron wan-bissaka - good pacy DR, fantastic tackling. attacking aspect is above average. verdict: STAY

axel tuanzebe - highly rated versatile youngster, needs more game time. verdict: STAY

brandon williams - breakthru ballsy youngster of this season, inspiration to other youngsters, still learning how to defend but unafraid to go forward. verdict: STAY

Midfield
paul pogba - top player but drama mama, distracting nonsense for the team, losing patience with his antics. verdict: OMGPLSGO but who will afford his price tag?

juan mata - don't think can reinvent himself as a deep-lying playmaker, perhaps transit to coaching staff? seems like a well rounded person with his Common Goal charity. verdict: STAY on as coach upon retirement

jesse lingard - lost form and focus with off-field issues, not setting an example to the youngsters at 27yo. verdict: GO

andreas pereira - much have been said, gripes many many, don't think he is cut out for english football, better to relocate to spain/portugal/italy. verdict: GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

fred - i feel the jump from ukrainian league to BPL was too much for him, could have gone to other european clubs first to improve his tactical discipline. verdict: GOOO if another club comes for him

bruno fernandes - alternative to pogba, takes time to gel with teammates. verdict: STAY

daniel james - exciting pacy youngster, ineffective as a striker though. verdict: STAY

nemanja matic - good DM but ogs will bench him if not for the injury crisis, unhappy with backup status. verdict: GO if another club comes for him

fred is an older version of pereira, at his age he is still inconsistent and his set pieces make ppl angry. he is a rotation/backup player at best, not an impt 1st team player. the brazilian who had an impact was rafael but LVG was ruthless with him wtf??:( he has smth against brazilians...

ogs is a young manager and the squad has been unlucky with injuries. yes he is quite imprudent by not signing sufficient cover in case of injuries, some slight over-tinkering with tactics and not ballsy enough when playing at home. but i don't think he should go, the club went thru a sacking phase and caused upheaval and instability. the mgt had a delusion that by appointing successful managers and spending big means BPL/UCL honours, but the past 7 seasons hv proved otherwise. if the team is struggling to fight relegation, it means his methods clearly don't work, and if he goes, man u becomes another sacking club just to survive in the BPL... :o

Wow!... they were so good early this morning... beat Rooney's Derby 3-0 :)...thru their other new boy ighalo ;)... who says he is a lousy footballer????

United played better at 4-2-3-1.

Ighalo wants to prove his critics wrong he is a EPL discard.
Can see he is quite bitter being branded as such.
Two goals inside the box.

1st goal - whack in despite 3 Derby players on him...pure determination
2nd goal - great pass from Mata.....Ighalo showed composure to whack in at the 2nd attempt. Many would have skived the shot.

Even old bird Mata starting to show he still got it.

Many say Fred is lousy....yes...but put McTom or Matic alongside him and he will start to spray and connect play from the back to the front.
He actually got good stamina and cover a wide area.
And of course the talismanic Bruno....have Utd found the ONE??

Things looking good...now the real test against arch rivals City.

lacoruna69
06-03-2020, 11:13 PM
This analysis by the HK chap quite good.
He focused on the 2 goals scored by Ighalo.

1. Ighalo knows how to peg the opposition defenders (in usual case 2) and create space for his other teammates to exploit.

2. Hold the ball up and pass to teammate (Mata)...run into space and wait for return pass...and score.

This is sorely lacking in Martial and even Rashford. Only Ibra can do it previously.

I believed Ighalo will help to bring Mata into play...Mata is old but got great ball awareness and reads the game well. Can see in the Brugge game in which he anticipate Bruno's pass and run into the box at the right moment....lightning pass to on rushing Ighalo for the 2nd goal.
Can see is the Mata-Ighalo link play at work again.

Lest not forget, he is a loanee from Shanghai Greenland Shenhua.

""As long as my teammates believe in me, I have to keep going." ---- Odion Ighalo

Great 2-0 victory....my heart was in sixes and seven in the last 10 minutes as City just keep on going forward.
2nd goal was a gift but given the distance, McTominay also need some composure to lob it in. Kudos to this young chap for chasing the throw ball from Ederson.

Both goals also Ederson mistake, IMHO.
Clever chip from Bruno and everyone was caught by surprise. Ederson was beaten at his near post.
It is training ground move and can see Bruno raise his hand up before the freekick. Once his hand come down, Martial was already on the move.

I must confessed in the initial 25 mins, I was fearing the worst as City lords over the entire pitch.

Frankly speaking, this victory was unexpected.

with the BPL suspended, lets have some filler :p

Bruno Fernandes has been named the BPL player of the month *clap clap*

next up, lets do a ranking of ogs' signings so far...

5. Daniel James - made a quick impact initially but has since gone quiet. but he is still young and developing and his pace is a headache for defenders, most effective as a winger in a counter-attacking style

4. Odion Iglaho - last minute jan loan signing, made an impact with some goals scored, ogs is likely to use him as a plan b/targetman/rotating the players

3. Harry Maguire - at no.3 due to price tag, newly installed captain, adds a defensive solidity despite not pacy, likely to score more from set pieces with the arrival of Fernandes

2. Aaron Wan-Bissaka - really times his tackles well, at 22 he will be the 1st choice right back for club and country for the next 10 yrs

1. Bruno Fernandes - immediate impact, man u has gone unbeaten since his arrival, he is talismanic, good vision and passing range, good at set pieces, cocky af when taking penalties , can't wait for next season :D
