My Study Partner

Hi everyone, I have been a silent reader for a long time, and have been inspired to start sharing too.

Just a quick backstory to get you on track - I was your typical 16-year-old studying in N.A, mixing with the wrong company. Mischievous, playful and horny. To add to that, I hated to study (partly due to my short attention span) and only went to school for three reasons; my friends, my cca, and because I was forced to.

My second girlfriend of 10 months broke up with me a year ago, which brought me on a downward spiral. I started sleeping in classes, stopped doing homework and was on the verge of failing and repeating sec 3. It was a miracle that I managed to scrape through and progressed to sec 4. And as you all know, all sec 4s have to take their ‘N’ or ‘O’ levels, so it was a pretty important year.

I was getting extremely comfortable and used to my lifestyle in school which basically revolves around
1) heading to our classrooms after morning assembly
2) proceeding to sleep in class
3) waking up for recess (which was the time to eat with and talk to girls from other classes, getting into fights in the toilet/secluded yard at the back of the school)
4) sleeping/wreaking havoc in lessons with my classmates
5) doing weights training after school/heading to the reservoir nearby for canoeing training

Half the year passed and my final preparatory exam results were an indication of me having to either repeat sec 4, or probably going to ite. As a way to help us prepare for the national examinations, my school implemented the ‘study buddy’ system which pairs a student councillor with a student whom was struggling with school.

As one of the students in the ‘failing category’, I was ultimately paired with one of the student councillors. I guess knowing my reputation of picking fights with others and assaulting male student councillors, the teacher in charge of pairing decided to pair me with Joyce, one of the most attractive girls. Not only was she in the top express class, she was the captain of the netball team, which explained her really fit figure and slim calves, paired with ample 34c breasts.

I have always found her to be extremely hot and desirable, but was never really interested in getting to know her because of our different backgrounds. She was the popular, well-liked, attractive and smart girl in school whereas I was the screwup - troublemaker.

All of us assembled in the hall one day, and proceeded to pair up with our partners for a boring ice-breaking exercise – scavenger hunt. We set next to each other during the briefing which covered the rules and outcomes of the exercise, which I thought was extremely boring and a waste of my time. We barely communicated as there was nothing to talk about, and I’m pretty sure both of us didn’t want to be there due to different reasons – because I absolutely had to and probably because she didn’t want to be paired with me.

Basically, we were given hints as to where the items could be found. Throughout the exercise, I trailed behind her, taking my own sweet time to follow her as we proceeded to find the items. At the same time, catching glimpses of her butt and her bra that could be seen through her white uniform. We reached the last location, which had the item tied to a string, strung up on the pullup bar. All we had to do was to jump and grab it. (Come to think of it, I think the purpose of this last item was for us to assist each other to reach for it, probably to establish a sense of teamwork/bond.)

She jumped and tried to reach for it but failed.

‘Do you want me to grab it? I don’t think you can jump that high’. I told her.

‘Oh he speaks! Why do you even bother when you haven't helped for the other items? And excuse me, I can reach it. Just watch me’. She said.

‘Okay... Do what you want’. I said.

The ground on the pullup bars were made of artificial turf, so it was pretty easy to lose your footing due to it being so soft. She tried again, but this time, landed wrongly and fell, seemingly spraining her ankle at the same time. Grabbing onto her right ankle, she appeared to be in pain as I approached her to help her up.

‘Eh, told you you can’t reach it already, that’s what you get for being so stubborn. Are you okay?’ I asked her.

Rubbing the ball of her ankle, she said ‘I’m okay, it’s an old injury and it happens all the time, that’s why we always wear ankle guards when we play netball. Deep down I knew I couldn’t reach it but I just wanted to prove it to you and your smartass. See lah, it’s all your fault. Can you please grab it so we can finish this and end the day already?’.

I jumped, grabbed the item and passed it to her. ‘Nah, here you go. Happy? Can you walk or do you need me to give you a hand?’.

‘I’m fine, I didn’t need your help then and I surely don’t need it now. Thanks anyway’. She said, showing a hint of her stubbornness yet again.

We reached the hall, handed in the items and sat down, waiting for the last few groups to get back for the debrief. Genuinely concerned for her, I asked ‘Where do you stay? Do you need me to help you get home?’.
Letting out a mocking laugh, she went: ‘Ha ha ha. Don’t make use of this opportunity to find out where I live. Thanks but no thanks’.

(I just moved in with my relatives so for the time being, I had to travel 45 minutes by bus just to get home.)

It was already 5pm and as you all know, public transportation during peak hours are the worst. And I was just dreading to have to stand the entire bus journey home. 10 minutes have passed and I couldn’t be bothered to wait for the rest of the slowpokes to get back just to be debriefed, so I grabbed by bag and said bye to Joyce.

I was sitting at the bus stop for a good 15-20 minutes, waiting for the damn bus to get here when I felt a tap on my shoulder. ‘What the fuck do you want?’ I exclaimed as I turned my head around, partly because I was tired and mad that the bus is taking forever to arrive.

‘Whoa whoa why the hostility, you shouldn’t speak to girls like that. Why did you leave before being released? Anyway, this is our allocated timetable and I’ll see you tomorrow at 10 in class 4H ok?’. Joyce said as she handed me a piece of foolscap paper.

‘It’s not like you’re a girl anyway. Yaya ok. Bye’. I replied, as I stood up to board that bus that is arriving.
