A full-time National Serviceman (NSF) attempted to rob an 18-year-old lady after he had no money for food. Radin Rizwan Radin Rosman, 24, followed his victim in a residential estate in Upper Thomson and tried to snatch her phone at around 10.30pm. Radin failed and when the lady struggled and shouted for help, he held the victim in a stranglehold until she fainted.
The commotion was heard by two sisters living in the neighbourhood and they went to the scene seeing Radin restraining the victim. One of the sisters sought help from her father and Radin was caught, presumably, after a chase. The victim suffered injuries to her scalp, neck and left collarbone, and further hospital checks found that her spine was injured too.
Radin was represented by a volunteer lawyer under the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme and the court heard that he committed the robbery due to extreme poverty. He was sentenced to 5 years’ jail and 12 strokes of the cane. A NSF conscript draws only a monthly salary of S$500, half the salary of a full-time maid or cleaner in Singapore.
