Prequel: You are unworthy…

The background of this prequel started in the early 2000s…

Nicky left Indonesia and came to Singapore with her grandmother to pursue further studies where she eventually ended up studying in a Methodist school for her secondary education. As all her friends and family were in Indonesia she hardly made any friends in her first year in Singapore. Because there were lesser distractions for her she could focus in her studies and eventually became the top 5 students of her cohort in her first year.

At the tender age of 13, Nicky started to undergo puberty as she became more aware of her body physically. Even though it was a Methodist school she was attending it was a mixed school with both boys and girls attending. She was also starting to pay attention to the boys around in school and there was one in particular that made her flush whenever he was near… her classmate and monitor Matthew.

For the first time Nicky had a crush. The feeling she was going through was an unfamiliar territory to her but she had no one to go to for advice. She comes from a conservative Chinese family back in Indonesia where matters of relationships were not openly discussed. Even between her grandparents and parents they do not show affection at all in front of their kids. She was particularly afraid her father would find out about her crush as she was sure she was going to get a hearing from him.

So with no body there she could trust and talk to her only outlet at the time was through the Internet. She considered writing a blog but she already had a physical diary, what she wanted was response and not just her individual reflection. She considered using IRC at the time but it was too complicated to her and she heard so much horror stories about getting rape during blind dates and what not. In the end she used a relatively simple tool which she has been enjoying anyway for a long time… Yahoo Games.

Yes you heard me correct Yahoo Games. Other than studying Nicky being a couch potato kills time by playing various games on Yahoo Games and listening to English pop music. Backstreet Boys was her favourite boy group and her favourite among them… Nick Carter (hence her name Nicky).

If you ask me how is meeting and talking to people in Yahoo Games different from talking to people in IRC? I don’t know perhaps it was just a matter of being in her comfort zone. One of the games Nicky play in Yahoo Games was Yahoo Pool. And this is where I come in…

I was also 13 years old when I met Nicky online. As an avid fan of 8-ball pool I was introduce to the game both physically and virtually by my Dad. Unlike Nicky who plays multiple games I only played Yahoo Pool and I was hook onto it, I pride myself with really high ratings in the game with a winning ratio of about only 1 lost in every 100 games or so.

Of course other than using the internet to play Yahoo Pool like others my age I would secretly use the net to surf porn. I still remember back then I only started by surfing for softcore pictures. But things took a turn during the second game when I accidentally scored the black ball before clearing all my object ball and I lost by default (KNN). Obviously I asked for another rematch and it was granted. The third game Nickgirl4ever showed some skills and I was defeated TWICE in a row (WTF), it was unprecedented. Again I asked for another rematch…

All in all we played about 10 games in total I won 6 and she won 4 games. Before she left she actually left a message…

Nickgirl4ever: Same time same room tomorrow?

Back then during our first encounter did I know the person behind the screens was just a 13 year old girl like me? Of course not. I only accepted challenge because I was too competitive for my own good. We met each other again the same time same room the next day, played another 10 games… this time I won 8 times she won twice. We started chatting a bit more too…

From there we continued our talking non-stop and eventually exchange emails and added each other on MSN. We properly introduce ourselves as Nicky and Jay and the chat became a daily affair that I eventually look forward to after dinner every night. So much so that I eventually stopped playing Yahoo Pool and was focus in talking to her. Nicky was my first blind encounter with a stranger on the internet, to a 13 year old then it was very exciting. I was definitely curious about her looks but I was also afraid that it kills the suspense once we saw each other. I believe Nicky felt the same way too. This blind MSN chat lasted about 6 months.

During the 6 months Nicky eventually open up to me sharing about her crush Matthew while I shared with her my own crush at that time too… Apple was my crush since I was 10 years old (Pri 4). I had a crush on her since the first day of school when I was transferred to a new class where Apple was. With very good fortune we stayed in the same class all the way till we graduated from Primary School.

A little bit on Apple’s description, she was very tan with the exception on the eye area because she swims a lot during primary school (Goggles). Apple was very sporty as she also participates in other sports such as Tae Won Do and Netball. A bit of tomboy character when she was in primary school but her long jet black silky pony tail was what captivated me when I first saw her. Apple was also taller than me when we were in primary school. I would often joke with her by calling her a reverse panda and would pull her pony tail so that she would deliberately chase after me (which she did)… Typical things boys my age did at the time.

The heart breaking moment though came after PSLE, I still remember out of the 6 secondary schools we could choose to enrol in, 4 of my choices were the same as Apple’s. Her top choice was a girl’s school which I could not go obviously. Nevertheless I felt I had a good chance of being in the same secondary school as Apple… but… like how fate got me to meet Nicky, fate pulled a joke on me as Apple went to the only other school that was not in my 6 choices.

As we neither had pager or mobile phone at that time I remember we only exchange emails and home number. In the beginning days when of secondary school days I was always camping in MSN awaiting for her to be online but I have never seen her. A few times I called her home number but it was her parents who picked it up and I eventually hang up as I did not had the courage then. Just like this I never got to hear from her for almost 6 months, but every single day I thought about her.

Back to Nicky… so as I share with Nicky how much I miss Apple I was also teaching her how to get Matthew’s attention. It was simple things really like encouraging her to be made more visible since they were in the same class. I particularly remember to ask her to be active during PE lessons especially when they were playing games like captain’s ball where both boys and girls got to play together. Of course I did not tell her it was partly because boys my age who were going through puberty may get a reaction watching girls running around in FBT shorts.

As I did not know how Nicky look like I only hope it was at least decent enough to pass Matthew’s benchmark. Overall the encouragement seem to be working as she eventually got to exchange mobile number and emails with Matthew and they were communicating pretty regularly.

At the same time luck finally bestow on me! Firstly my mum finally got me a mobile phone. My first phone was a Motorola if I remember correctly, nothing fanciful about it as it was only used as a point of contact. Secondly… My CCA during secondary school was basketball team and guess who were we playing at their home court as a friendly match. Apple’s SECONDARY SCHOOL!! (Somewhere in Clementi area)

Nicky was happy for me and I remember hardly getting any sleep the night before as I was too excited. So the day came and after school I made my way down with my team mates, even my team mates could tell I was not my usual self… William was my best friend and also my team mate during Secondary School, not only that we were also in the same class during the first two year in Secondary school.

William: Eh what wrong with you today ar?

Me: What thing what’s wrong?

William: You a bit weird leh… never talk throughout the journey and you are already sweating quite badly you know

Shortly after we enter the main gate another team mate of mine shouted: Jay look!! Apple!!!

I immediately turn my head to where his finger was pointing… it was a very fat Malay girl.

Me: Eh chee bye you don’t anyhow play can!

Some of my other members acted like hooligan while we made our way to the court asking around… “Eh you there! You know who is Apple? Got see Apple? Where is Apple?” but no use… in fact people were shunting away from them.

All the way till the start of the game I did not get to see Apple… I was in despair and was losing hope while sitting on the bench watching the game play out. I was a bench player but still played pretty regularly as I was a 6th or 7th option for the team after the starters.

So half way through the first half I was substituted… I told myself to focus and forget about Apple for the time being as my team was losing and I need to help them. Shortly after I got substituted I remember one of my team members got a steal and I was running ahead of everyone for a fast break. I got the ball thunder over to me… great I’m going to secure this 2 point only to hear…

I already took my two steps for my layup and was mid-air but the moment I heard the familiar voice I lost concentration resulting in missing an open layup. I still remember my team swearing when they saw that…

When I landed after missing the layup my head was not scrambling to see where the ball was, it was scrambling to see where the voice was… and finally I saw Apple at courtside dress in her school’s PE attire. Inside of me I was so happy... FINALLY i thought to myself…

Coach: Ni zai zuo shen mo!!! (What are you doing!?!?)

Coach’s shouting shock the shit out of me and when I got aware of the situation my body involuntarily committed a foul while fighting for the loose ball. Instead of gaining 2 points for my team we lost 4 points instead because my foul got the opponent 2 free throws.

I took time to regain some composure during the free throws… now that Apple is here watching the game I must play well in front of her. But that pressure did not help at all… during our turn to attack William created an opening for me and he passed the ball to me where I was completely open. This was a move we practice very often… but… I shot an air ball without anyone defending me…

The whistle was blown after that not because the first half was over but I was sub out of the game. I still remember my coach shaking his head when I walked pass him as I sat down the bench. I was only on the court for less than 2 mins. Now I’m feeling very ashamed to face Apple as I look down and did not dare to face her.

When half time was over there was a quick 10 mins break. While most went down the court to keep their bodies warm up I was still sitting on the bench until someone tap me on my shoulders. It was Apple! I stood up immediately…

Me: Ap… Apple!

Apple: How are you doing! *She gave me a punch to my chest* Wah look at you… you are taller than me now!!

I never notice that till she told me… to me Apple was so much prettier now (not that last time not pretty). In fact her body has gone through some changes as well… Other than her silky black hair that was deadly attractive to me she had another asset to distract me now… her boobs. I was staring at them for a second or two and I’m sure she notice it too.

Me: I’m… I’m great… I forgot you were studying here (complete lie). How are you?

My victory was shared immediately with Nicky at night it was a high five for the both of us as we seem to be getting progress with our own crush. I also started texting Apple but the sad part was her phone plan only had 100 sms-es and she is not allowed to exceed it as her parents are controlling it strictly. It felt dumb and I didn’t want to look desperate if I kept having a one-sided communication so the texting died down too.

Through my chats with Nicky we soon realise Apple and Matthew’s birthday were pretty close from each other. Apple’s birthday was in late October while Matthew’s was a week away in early November. Soon we were brainstorming for what present to get for our crush on MSN…

Me: So…. I’m lost…. What do you think I should get for her? Necklace? Music box?

Nicky: I dunno I dun even know her or see her before…

Me: I’m lost… haha…

Nicky: haha don’t worry anyway Jay I have a favour to ask too…

I agreed to Nicky’s condition and we arrange to meet after school on a Friday afternoon. My school like some neighbourhood schools release us an hour earlier around 12.30pm because of prayers for the Muslim students. While Nicky’s school does not practice that I offered to pick her up from her school bus stop at 1.30pm as an act of gentleman.

It was a pretty big mistake because I was already nervous to meet Nicky for the first time and to make things worst I was getting stares by students from Nicky’s school as the only person wearing a different uniform waiting outside her school. I was sweating profusely and I could feel my uniform sticking to my back.

“I really wonder how Nicky looks like… would I get a shock. Lol…” That was on my mind while I was waiting… and the moment of truth came when I heard my name called… “Jay…?”

I turned around and saw a girl about 150cm when she was 13 years old (I was 160cm when I was 13). She look like any regular Chinese girl I know (I was thinking then Indonesian Chinese may look different… haha), fair complexion with a bit of pimple on her forehead, long black hair tied into a ponytail. Nicky wore specs and portray a very studious feelings especially with her big school bag and the thick textbooks she is hugging onto. Looks wise she had a bit of baby fat throughout secondary school but eventually as she grow older some of my friends who have seen her said she look like a Korean celebrity popular during my time but not so now… Jang Na Ra.

So we took a bus to Orchard and at the end of the day I chose a necklace from Perlini Silver and Nicky got a soccer jersey for Matthew. I offer to send her home and realise she was staying in a condo only less than 10mins bus ride from my school in Queenstown area. We bid our goodbyes from there.

I drop a text to Apple letting her know I got a gift for her birthday.

Apple: Hah don’t need la why spend the money?
Me: But I already buy liao… haha… unless you wan me throw away.

As Apple did not intend to have any party (not necessary for 13 years old) we arrange to meet near her school Macdonald entrance. So the day came and I was excited to see Apple again… I remember it was pouring and even though I was in a sheltered area I still got a bit drench because of the wind. Just like that… Apple did not showed up and I waited foolishly for 2 hours. I tried calling her phone several times but no body picked up. Eventually I left a text … disappointed.

Of course I shared my dismay with Nicky the same night, she could only try her best to comfort me saying it could be a misunderstanding. Only the next day morning I receive a text from Apple…

Apple: Jay I’m SO SO SORRY!! I forgot my phone that day and I was stuck in project I forgot I need to meet you! SO SORRY!! Where you stay? This time I go take from you ok??

Apple: Hey Jay! (Apple was waving at me as she exit the control station)

Me: Hey!

Apple gave me a hug… the tom boy Apple I know actually gave me a girly hug, worst still attached. The first time I was hug by a girl was also that moment. It should be a happy moment because supposedly I was hug by the dream girl of my life but I couldn’t feel a tinge of happiness then.

We waved goodbye and I walked home… heartbroken… the most painful thing that constantly linger in my mind was lacking the courage to express myself in front of Apple, we could have a chance together but now… it was too late. :(

For the next few days even though I was “online” my status reflected “appeared offline”. Nicky did drop me a few SMS as she is concern but was ignored. When I was finally online Nicky drop me a nudge and I told her everything. She tried cheering me up but there was only so much she could do. I asked her to focus on Matthew’s birthday as he was going to have a small party to celebrate at his condo function room and Nicky was invited too.

The night when Nicky went to Matthew’s birthday party I was playing counter-strike at home (can’t remember with bot or with server). As I forgot to sign out from MSN a sudden nudge from it cause me to lag and I was head shot.

“WTF who sia… disturb me…” I quit the game. It was Nicky.

Me: Hey… aren’t you at the party? So early finish ar?

Nicky: Yea I came back first

Me: What why? You got pass him present? He like?

Nicky: Yes he like the present

Me: Good! Then what he say?

Nicky: He say thank you

Me: That’s all?

Nicky: And… he tried to kiss me

Me: WHAT!? In front of everyone??

Nicky: No no… after I pass him the present he brought me to a quiet corner

Me: =O … anyway CONGRATULATIONS! MISSION SUCCESS!!!

Nicky: I was excited initially but when he was nearing me I suddenly thought of something and ran away

Nicky is a nice girl but to be honest I had no idea if I like her, I was definitely comfortable with her but I never consider escalating our relationship. It could be because I was too fixated with Apple then too.

Nicky told me she would be online lesser as she needed to focus on studies. To me exam or not it does not make a huge difference as I study minimally to pass. Even after examination period Nicky still was not online until I receive a phone call from her one night.

I did not hear from Nicky again all the way till 1st Jan late night I receive a text.

I saw the message but I did not reply. Truth be told during the last month when Nicky wasn’t around I did spend time to think about what she said and I have made a decision.

2nd January first day of school for both Nicky and I embarking our day as Sec 2 students. After school William jio me to play basketball.

Me: Eh today cannot la (I was keeping my stuff in a hurry)

Many people who fill up survey does not provide their full particulars so I get a lot of partial ones. The working hours was easily 12 hours a day from 10am to 10pm, Xiao Wen and I work every day from Monday to Sunday and I had make sure I get at least 210 “successful/complete” contacts a week.

Life was pretty much the same the next two weeks, just another week closer to enlistment. To be honest I had my concerns of not being able to adapt. Being the eldest I'm going to be the first to be enlisted. My father is a Malaysian PR so he has never gone through NS.

Has anyone of you ever read the book titled “The Game”, it is a true story recount based on a guy who claim to be a nerd who ended up being a great pickup artist. I have read the book but never applied much of the techniques recommended. I don’t know what got into me but I thought I could give the recommendation a shot. I remember wearing a salmon-pink coloured V-neck T-shirt that was pretty tight fitting matching it with a white jeans and loafers. I also put on my ear studs that night with a huge “blink blink” diamond on it along with other accessories. That was my choice of battle attire that night. I still remember feeling pretty satisfied checking myself once more before leaving house.

Before we left I took a quick glance and see what has happen to our “target”...

Belle manage to grab a cab while I dropped Theresa at the backseat along with Belle. Theresa was already showing signs of vomiting while at the backseat. The taxi uncle wanted to drop us off but I assured him it won’t happen and beg not to drop us off.

I was panting like crazy until the taxi uncle interrupted me: boy so where u going? U ok? U look like someone trying to chase after your life…

My life… yes… that exactly what it felt like. On the way home I was flooded with many pessimistic “what if” thoughts… I mean… Cherry could have killed me if she really wants to or torture me in a thousand different ways. Will she? Can she? I really do not know. The more I thought about it the more freak out I got.

There were no calls or messages from Cherry on my way home. I took a cold shower and a panadol because I was having such a bad headache. I told myself to sleep myself out of this terrible nightmare. I mean how can a person life go through such a major turn of events in less than 48 hours.

“Tomorrow will be a better day…" I comforted myself... I hope...
