Heard this story of Tharman which does speak well of the man. This is similar to Tree Planting event last year at Jurong lake where Tharman and Lawrence Wong together with residents and young kids were watering a tree sapling when Tharman turned the water can and drenched the kids for fun. Lawrence was caught by surprise and did not know what to do or was too stuck by protocol as he stopped momentarily and then continued to water the sapling.

In this case in 2015, Tharman was invited to kick-off a hockey game between Ex-National greats such Farleigh Clarke, Keith Kleinman, Veer Singh etc at the Padang. Instead of just kicking off the event, he ended up playing for 20 odd minutes in his long pants. Tharman played for Combined Schools and in the premier league in his early years and thus would know his stuff and could not hold back. He then went on to talk to wives, families and friends of the players gathered along the side lines. When the game ended, they adjourned for light refreshments and he continued to mingle and speak to the people. Some then began a impromptu session on the future of hockey and how more can be done for the game. Tharman participated actively and the atmosphere I understand was unexpectedly friendly.

The plan was for Tharman to grace the kick-off and then to leave once the match began. No one expected him to play or even remain till the end. His memory apparently is still good as he approached many that he recalled during his school days and spent time taking about the old days.
