The Bukit Batok By-election is happening this Saturday, 7 May. Let’s recap what’s been said and done by the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) Murali Pillai and Singapore Democratic Party’s (SDP) Chee Soon Juan leading up to Saturday.

12 Mar 2016
Bukit Batok Single Member Constituency (SMC) Member of Parliament (MP) David Ong resigns due to “personal indiscretion”. It was later revealed that he was having an affair with a female PAP grassroots activist. The affair came to light when the woman’s husband made a complaint. On the same day, the SDP said it will be contesting the by-election.

20 April 2016
President issues writ of election. The by-election will be held on 7 May, and nomination day will be 27 Apr and Keming Primary School.

22 April 2016
SDP announced their We Are One, We Are Bukit Batok programme. It will be headed by a president of a financial association, a private tutor, and an allied educator/student.

24 April 2016
Murali unveils $1.9 million worth of infrastructure plans for a neighbourhood in the single-member constituency if he were to be elected. The plans - which include covered walkways, ramps, a jogging track and a three-generational park - come under the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP).

27 April 2016
Nomination day and first day of campaigning. Murali unveils his campaign manifesto - including a new healthcare cooperative and job placement programme while his opponent Chee Soon Juan greeted commuters and complained about Murali’s promise of the NRP. Confusion ensues. PAP explains that the SDP is mistaken, the NRP is handled by town councils and funded by the government, while the URA's masterplan is the URA masterplan, two different issues.

Dr Chee’s supporter releases Chee’s first MV!

Socio-political site IQ held a forum on "Bukit Batok By-Election: What's At Stake?" that evening. The (lively!) discussion focused on issues that are likely to be raised during the hustings, and the significance of the results to Singapore and its political scene.
