A SriLankan Airlines flight that departed from Changi Airport on Thursday (14 April) was made to return to Singapore soon after take-off for “security reasons”.

Upon landing, the Singapore Police Force’s airport division requested that all baggage aboard the Colombo-bound flight UL309 be screened again and interviewed a number of passengers, the airline said in a statement on its website (http://www.srilankan.com/en_uk/coporate/news-details-revamp/103) released on Friday (15 April).

The police eventually requested for three passengers aboard the flight to be offloaded for further questioning. This was in addition to five other passengers who had been detained for interrogation prior to the flight’s departure, the statement said.

In order to avoid further delays, the family members of two of the offloaded passengers were also taken off the flight, which reached Colombo at 12.40am the following morning after a total delay of about three hours.

According to the airline, the five passengers who were initially detained are still being held by the Singapore police.

The statement also said that the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore has yet to disclose the details of what led to the flight being recalled and that SriLankan Airlines is “in the process of requesting for a comprehensive report” on the matter.
