A new study conducted by Goldman Sachs (http://www.goldmansachs.com/our-thinking/macroeconomic-insights/growth-of-china/chinese-consumer/) and IndiaSpend (http://www.indiaspend.com/cover-story/average-indian-spends-1-8-every-day-chinese-7-41051) found that the average Indian spends $1.80 (approx INR 120) a day, as compared to the average Chinese who spends $7 (INR 467) a day, and the average American who spends $97 (INR 6466) a day.

However, the data found about the daily expenditure of Indians applies to those living in urban areas. Rural Indians spend much less - an average amount of Rs. 49 per day.
State-wise, people living in urban areas in Haryana (Rs. 127) , Kerala (Rs. 114) and Delhi (Rs. 110) spend the most whilst people living in rural areas of Kerala spent the most at Rs. 90 per day.

According to IndiaSpend (http://www.indiaspend.com/cover-story/average-indian-spends-1-8-every-day-chinese-7-41051), in cities, the poorest half of the people spent Rs 2,019 per month, or Rs 67 per person per day. Average spending in cities was Rs 20 higher than what the poor half spent – Rs 2,630 per month or Rs 87 per person per day. This shows inequality (http://www.indiaspend.com/cover-story/indias-wealth-is-rising-so-is-inequality-96987) between the rich and the poor in urban India.
