SINGAPORE: DBS and POSB automated teller machines (ATMs) will be the first in Singapore to provide a Tamil language option on top of English, Mandarin or Malay, announced the bank on Monday (Mar 21).
The new feature is part of an island-wide revamp of the DBS and POSB ATM user interface across some 1,100 machines, which is slated for completion by June this year.
Other changes include elderly-friendly features such as larger fonts and improvements to the user experience that will see the most popular transactions placed on the main menu as well as more preset amounts for cash withdrawals. The bank said that based on pilot results over several months, the enhancements are expected to reduce transaction times by up to 20 per cent.
This first major revamp of the bank’s ATM user interface in a decade was designed in consultation with community leaders, with customer feedback and optimisation analytics to ensure the interface accounts for customer usage patterns, said DBS.
DBS added that some 150 man-hours were also spent reviewing and vetting the Tamil language function together with the likes of the Singapore Tamil Community, Tamil Murasu, the Tamil Language & Cultural Society and linguists to ensure accuracy and user-friendliness.
“While efficiency was a key factor in designing our interface, we also wanted to ensure that it would take into account the diverse needs of our customers – hence the implementation of the Tamil language option and its elderly-friendly features,” said Jeremy Soo, Managing Director and Head of Consumer Banking Group (Singapore), DBS Bank.
In January this year, 86 DBS and POSB ATMs were fitted with visually handicapped-friendly functions in a move that was praised by Social and Family Development Minister Tan Chuan-Jin.
