Fleeting Wonders: Beetles Swarm Argentina Beach
The shiny bugs emerged to mate and then perish.

Over the past couple of weeks, beachgoers in Argentina have been joined by a number of unwelcome companions: tens of thousands of shiny black beetles.

Miles of beach from Mar de Ajo to San Bernardo were covered in the bugs, each about the size of a fingertip, reports La Nacion. The beetles are born underground, and emerge after the rains to mate, dying soon after. Wind and waves may have pushed this particular group to the seashore. "It wasn't possible to walk without stepping [on] them," wrote Reddit user mypolarbear, who visited the beach recently.

According to La Nacion, a similar pileup happened in 2012, leaving beetles scattered over the suburbs of Buenos Aires. Despite apocalyptic theories being bandied around Twitter, such invasions are "nothing more than a huge orgiastic mating ceremony between insects that live only four days," the outlet explained at that time. In other words, a completely natural dose of sex and death.

Every day, we track down a fleeting wonder—something amazing that's only happening right now. Have a tip for us? Tell us about it! Send your temporary miracles to [email protected].

A beetle invasion of biblical proportions has hit beaches in Argentina with millions of the black critters descending on the sands leaving experts baffled.

Locals reacted with horror after seeing the swarm of the bugs crawling on the beaches in the resorts of Mar de Ajo, 31 miles away from the capital Buenos Aires, and San Bernardo.

In scenes straight out of a horror film, images posted onto social media show the beaches turned black by the plague of beetles as they cover miles of coastline.

Although no one is exactly sure what is behind the phenomenon, social media has gone into meltdown with theories.

Some believe it is a portent of the end of the world with commentators claiming the influx of beetles is an 'ominous warning of impending doom' and 'the end of times is near… they can sense it.'

Others suggested that an earthquake had hit the area before the beetle invasion appeared.

One commentator who identifies himself as khnagar, said: 'It looks like Black Maize Beetle (Heteronychus Arator), which are known for having mass flights in the summer/autumn where they mate and all that.

'Or it's some similar type of beetle. They only live for a few days at that stage after crawling out of the ground. So a lot of beetles flew, got swept out to sea by the winds, and then came back to the beach, most of them dead or dying. Most likely scenario I can come up with.'

Scientists say the beetles live for about two years underground and come out to mate. They only live for four more days during this cycle.

The 'hatching' takes place every year and although in the past it usually takes place in January, for the last couple of years it has been happening later.

Now local news says locals are trying to sell the beetles online. According to one ad, a man is offering them for 46 GBP per kilo or 21 GBP per pound.

According to some, secretions from the insect can strengthen the body's defences against cancer, AIDS, asthma and diabetes, among other illnesses.
