SINGAPORE: About three in ten A-Level students chose not to or were unable to progress to a full-time programme in a local autonomous university from 2007 to 2011, Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education & Skills) Ong Ye Kung said on Monday (Feb 29).

This comes up to about 4,400 students per year.

Mr Ong was responding to a question from Member of Parliament for Sembawang GRC Lim Wee Kiak.

Mr Ong said that of the 4,400 students in each annual batch, about two in five - or 1,600 per year - were male students who have served their National Service.

"Most of the students who do not progress to the local autonomous universities have been pursuing other upgrading options based on their interest and strengths, such as polytechnics, arts institutions, overseas universities and private education institutions, or proceed to work," Mr Ong said.
