The Land Transportation Authority (LTA) has awarded the tender to build a satellite-based Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system to NCS and MHI Engine System for S$556 million.

The new system will give the LTA island-wide coverage and charge for distance travelled.

The consortium’s winning bid is less than half of the S$1.2 billion submitted by the other qualified bidder, ST Electronics, the LTA said.

Development of the new system is set to begin in the second quarter of 2016, and will be rolled out in 2020, with an 18-month transition period between the current and new system.

The current ERP system, which was introduced in 1998, was built by MHI and is maintained by NCS.

NCS and MCI, in a joint statement said the ERP system will make use of advanced satellite technology, which they claim to be the “first of its kind” to be implemented nationwide in an urban environment.
