by Carolin Fiehm and Andy Eckardt

At least four people were killed and around 100 injured when two commuter trains collided in southern Germany early Thursday, officials said.

Local police said that around 15 of the injuries from the crash near Bad Aibling, in Bavaria, were critical and that around 40 people were seriously injured.

The full extent of the casualties was still unclear and the situation was very dynamic, police spokesman Markus Wessner told NBC News.

Wessner said all available rescue teams in the region were deployed to the crash site, while local police said on Twitter that "several hundred" rescue personnel were on the ground.

The trains collided around 7 a.m. (1 a.m. ET) on a section of track between the southern cities of Rosenheim and Bad Aibling.

One of the trains detailed in the incident, according to Wessner. It was not immediately clear what caused the collision.

Germany's Justice Minister Heiko Maas thanked rescue teams in a message posted on Twitter.
