One of the two vehicles involved in a crash crash on the eastern side of Gorge Hill on State Highway 94 between Mossburn and Te Anau on Tuesday afternoon.

A tourist driver caused a head-on collision on a blind corner just minutes after forcing a bus to take evasive action.

Hongyang Guo, a 41-year-old self-employed businessman from China, pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving when he appeared before Judge Mark Callaghan in the Invercargill District Court on Thursday.

The police summary of facts said Guo was driving a Toyota Prado rental vehicle on the Te Anau-Mossburn Highway about 1.30pm on Tuesday.
He was returning to Queenstown after a day trip to Milford Sound, and was near The Key with his wife and two young children.

Guo travelled east on the highway and passed a Real Journeys Ltd bus travelling in the same direction.

As he moved back into the correct lane he cut off the bus, causing the driver to veer left and brake to avoid a collision.

Soon after, Guo pulled to the side of the road and the bus passed his vehicle.

About 15 minutes later, near Gorge Hill, Guo again approached the same bus.

He drove on to the wrong side of the road and began to overtake the bus.

As his vehicle moved alongside the bus, Guo entered a sweeping right-hand blind corner which had limited visibility of oncoming traffic, the police summary said.

Guo's vehicle collided head-on with a Honda station wagon travelling in the opposite direction.

The bus driver managed to avoid the collision.

The front-seat passenger of the Honda was trapped inside the vehicle and fire service personnel had to cut him from the vehicle, the summary said.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged in the impact.

The two male occupants of the Honda, who were Israeli tourists, suffered minor cuts and bruises.

Guo's wife and one of his children suffered minor seatbelt burns to the neck area.

Judge Callaghan fined Guo $300, disqualified him from driving for six months, and ordered him to pay $4500 reparation.

The summary said Guo and his family were travelling back to China on Saturday.
