this maybe a ploy by those bookmakers, after they lost so much on Owen.
i do not think Liverpool's have the cash to go for him - Ribery, unless they unload some players.

exactly, Ribery is not cheaper.

When you walk through a storm,
Hold your head up high,
And don’t be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm,
There’s a golden sky,
And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind,
Walk on through the rain,
Though your dreams be tossed and blown..
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you’ll never walk alone…
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you’ll never walk alone…
You’ll never walk alone.

当你在风暴中前行,
请高昂起你的头,
不要畏惧黑暗,
因为在风暴过后,
你会看到金色的天穹,
听到云雀甜美的歌声;
在风中走下去,
在雨里走下去,
尽管你的梦想会经历风雨的摧残;
走下去,继续走下去,希望在你的心中,
并且,你永远不会独行;
走下去,继续走下去,希望在你的心中,
并且,你永远不会独行,
你永远不会独行……

Eh isn't Ribery a winger?

he will fit perfectly into the left attacking position... replacing reira n babel...

Oh so he is a winger??

I always thought he play central role.. :p

Oh so he is a winger??

He can play left midfielder in 4-4-2 or left forward in 4-3-3. I think people get confused because Ribery was known as the new Zidane in the French squad a few years back. Zidane plays in the central midfielder role. Ribery is at his best when he takes on a fullback 1 on 1.

I thought the following in bold is pretty interesting. Hope we see good banners at the stadium in 2 weeks.

Whats up with Rafael now a days? Its not like he lost out Gareth Barry second time round....he should just concentrate on bringing the title back to Anfield then to go and play psycho games with other players and managers...

this week maybe 1 of the more important weeks for us provided alonso is safe from RM never empty purses... I hope he repays ' loyalty' to the club and stays with liverpool although Rafa did try to sell him off a year ago and that is a very disappointing thing to know of..

this may be really our year to finally break the 20 yr wait for a title... it was really very close last yr...

Well, the 17th of july isn't that far away. Let's see how it goes. Maybe Alonso will stay. Do you guys think we should try to sign Gudjohnsen to be our 2nd striker? I think he's quite under-rated. Can be quite a cheap and good buy for 1-2 seasons.

Gudjohnsen is not the most popular guy among the players...

He dived in the 1st leg of CL semi when he was in Chelski to get Alonso booked so Alonso will miss the 2nd leg due to suspension...

Anyway, should Alonso want to leave, then let him go at a good price...
Use the $$ to get new players...

Yes, Alonso's passing is a great asset to the team but then, whoever replaces him dont need to be just as good in passing but can bring in other factors to team..

I'm not quite worried about him leaving (if he fetch a good price) but I will lose some sleep for sure in future when Stevie G is about to retire.. :D:p

Can la bro, Lakers have just got Ron Artest to play with Kobe.

And remember Roo-Diver after the world cup? (hate to bring up the scum as an example but there you have it). ;)

Not sure though that Gud would want to go from warming one bench in Spain to another in England. But the idea of a proven striker willing to take up a reserve role is a good one.

relax, bro. it is just the first friendly match and the guys have just started condititioning. the guys have been enjoying life for more than a month. it takes a bit of time to get back into shape. rafa is putting them thru 2 sessions a day and it is all fitness work, just like last season. fitness is the reason why pool scored so many late goals last season.

credit to st gallen though, they should have won. but then, their season has already started last week; so, it meant that they should be at their fittest and freshest actually.

i agree with d other bros tt it's unfair to judge Pool based on their 1st friendly lah.

Importantly d fulcrum of d squad - reina, alonso, arbeloa, torres did nt feature. cos they were given a break after their confed cup duty. Mascherano did nt play too; dunno injured or wat.

Rafa made wholesale changes in d 2nd half. He gave both d snrs n jnrs a chance to prove themselves. tt small guy spearing was quite good - like a danny murphy in d making. glen johnson oso gave a gd acc - made some decent crosses.

next game agt rapid vienna on Sun. nt sure wat time is d telecast. i thk Rafa shd field a stronger squad with lesser wholesale chgs. hopefully can get tt psychological 1st win, albeit a friendly onli. :)

I hate how these training passes are being distributed as well.

I'm pretty sure Gerrard and Alonso are definitely not coming too, especially since Alonso is gonna be a Madrid player.

Gutted at the ambition of this club by selling a top player.

another 3rd place finish to look forward to next season me thinks.

only positive note this season is, damn our kits are lovely!

18-07-2009, 05:53 PM
To me, all these Asian Tours are a complete waste of time at the moment. To bring in a reserve team does defeat the purpose of people spending the minimum of $88 to catch their favourite stars. I think by boycotting the next friendly when they announce will be the best way for the people from the club to wake up their ideas. All of us want to see Torres, Gerrard and the first team players at least take the field for 45 mins. We'll be contented if that happens. Of course if they have unforseen circumstances due to court hearings or stuffs like that, they won't be blamed. No offence to all bros out there. I've also been supporting the REDS since i was a child. But it really disappoints me to find out about the list of players coming.
Maybe by looking at the brighter side, i hope to see players like Nemeth and Pacheco take the field. Hope they will be out to catch the fans' attention.

Italian Playmaker Aquilani ??? (maybe coming...)

Alberta Aquilanai........ often touted as the Beckenbaur of Italy for his calmness, vision and excellent reading of the game :p

Downside is he is like Owen....... very prone to injuries :( ...... if he can remain fit then he will definitely be an asset to the team....... however I have my doubts whether he can tahan the rigours of the physical english game.

seems like bros here r nt very interested in Pool's pre-season friendlies. altho last nite's game agt Rapid Vienna was only a friendly, it was a really disappointing match by the Reds. they really dished out trash!

Rafa fielded snrs + jrs in both halves. not a single Reds player was particularly outstanding. onli chance i could rembr was d kuyt shot which hit d side netting. on d other hand Rapid had several chances n could hv won by more than 1 goal.

some may say we shdnt get overly worried wif friendly results. but d game gave clear indications tt we do nt have enuff depth to really trouble d opposition. players like babel, lucas, voronin, degen disappointed. while d young defence which carra n skrtel played with d youngsters was jittery n exposed many times. Rapid wasnt a bad side, juz like 1 of those teams in d lower rungs of EPL like d Hulls, d Sunderlands which defend in numbers n play on d counter ... which Pool will need to perform better agt this season.

hopefully d spanish contingent plays in d next friendly n we shd see a side playing with more conviction and spirits.

if i m not wrong, pool are having 2 training sessions a day and an extra weights training after that. everyday. very tiring, i assure u. the reason for the fitness training is sound. rafa did that last season and see those late goals liverpool scored. they were still full of running at the end of the game whereas the opponents were already shagged out. i would not be too worried about the pre-season scores.

from the move u quoted, kuyt got the opportunity due to the dummy sold by pacheco. i like that. it shows that even the reserves have the presence of mind to know where their first eleven teammates r running. cheers.

bro.. the scarf is correct but the actual cape will be a little bit different la.. got hood and all.

:)
actually the scarf is quite nice.. there'll also be some other smaller things to buy - i.e. mini-flags, horns etc etc.

For those who bought the East Stand (Kop), you will be able to redeem one scarf per ticket.
Redemption can be made during match-day once you come in from the East Entrance.

Those who bought North, South and Grandstand, I'm afraid you got to buy it from the Harry's F&B temporary outlets inside the stadium (yes, Harry's is the official F&B, so prepare to take more money.. there won't be any DRINKS, KEROPOK OR POPIAH!!!)

Those who are lucky enough to buy the Balcony Seats (S$388/- and only sold to a few privilege ones) can redeem a Goody-Bag and enjoy free-flow beer and food at the Balcony area.

Oh, there'll also be a match-day booklet for purchase; comes with a Liverpool poster. Going at S$10/-.

There'll be a live singing of You'll Never Walk Alone by a overseas singer. This will be around 6.45pm or so.. so get ready to sing it out loud like a true Pool die-hard!

Yeah!!!!

(by the way, Stevie G is still TBC... let us all pray hard he'll be able to make it!)

Those $88 tickets at the lower grandstand will get a scarf too. Those on $188 and $388 will get a goodie bag. I expect the scarf to be inside the goodie bag. I checked with the staff of Profitable Plots when I bought my tickets.

mmm..not too sure about the lower grandstand getting free scarf.. Steve McMahon did not tell me about this arrangment. :)

But one thing's for sure, the scarf redemption is only available in the East entrance while Lower Grandstand is at the West. So maybe you can try your luck on Sunday.

As for $188... nope. No goody bags. The bags are just sufficient for the Grandstand Balcony folks.
Goody bags will contain all the match merchandise plus the match-day booklet. In total, 7 items.

The open training will still be at the National Stadium on Friday evening, 7-8pm. Rest of the training will be at Jalan Besar.. but beware, security will be extremely tight.

It was another average performance. At least Babel had his chances and took one.

Our play really only livened up in the last 10 mins when the Spaniards came on. Torres really gave the Thai defenders a run (literally) for their money but no surprise, we know what he can do. ;)

I actually manage to call through the ticket hotline this evening and check with them regarding the scarf for the $188 grandstand(red) ticket.

The staff confirmed that there will be no free scarf nor goodie bag for the grandstand(red) ticket. Only the Kop stand ticket holders will be able to redeem the free scarf.

This is damn disappointing. When I bought my ticket from the Profitable Plot HQ, the staff serving me told me that there will be a goodie bag for the grandstand (red) ticket. That's why I paid an extra $100 per ticket. If I had known otherwise, I would have bought the $88 ticket for lower grandstand. Clear misrepresentation. What's the hotline number?

He says he understand that Fowler needs to make a living when he played for Leeds or Man City. When Owen joined Newcastle, he was fine. But going to Man U... that's the final straw. Even if Owen joined Chelsea or Arsenal, it wouldn't be so bad.

Was quite shocked by his response. I wonder how many of you guys share the same feeling. Just curious...

Not many people will remember those 2 late goals now. He did win us the cup, just like how Gerrard won the FA cup for us when he scored in the last min against West Ham. I think many people remember how he tried to run down his contract and leave on a free transfer, like Mcmanaman.

I think there's a seafood restaurant at Turf City called Owen right? The logo of the restaurant is like our Liverpool crest. The owner must be quite bang balls now. Wonder if anyone will wear an Owen Liverpool jersey to the match this sunday.

Owen really make all liverpool’s fans very disppointed. He can join any clubs but not man u. Liverpool fans in england really hate to see liverpool player going to Man u. Owen started as a junior under 12 at liverpool junior sch.
But seriously he has not choice..newcastle been relegated. And no star player would ever wish to play for lower division....as they think really NO FACE.
BTW, paul ince is another player when he play Man u, then to inter milan before joining liverpool.
I wish OWEN all the best and hope he choose the right decision.

There's no doubting his talent and the goals he scored for us. IIRC Rafa wanted him but he ran off to Real Madrid thinking the rewards are there. I have little sympathy for him and I don't think many of us here do.

Panjang(crouchie) better not come here...i prefer just one striker up front and let Gerrard do what he is best at...(staying behind Torres all the way) :D

I see more goals coming than 2 strikers up front...unless the striker is BENZEMA... i once wish we could sign him but Madrid got him instead....

Benitez never wanted to sell Crouch at all...... it was he who wanted to go to another club to play more regularly....... if Crouch had remained at Anfield last season..... maybe we would have won the BPL title as many of the home draws could have used his height advantage to breach the "bus park" defences of the visiting teams :D

We all know he would head the ball into the arms of the keeper lah! ;)

OK, I think he would be a good backup to Torres but he would be whining all the time on the bench anyway so it's not going to work out.

come on, be fair.

1. not many people want owen back anyway. did you read that even wigan don't want him? a lot of liverpool fans still feel disappointed at the manner which he left the club.

2. so what if we didn't win any title over the last 2 years? looking at how we finished last season and pushing Man U to the title finale, a lot of liverpool fans are still very proud of our team.

3. gerrard is in court. it's a valid reason not to be here. it's not like gerrard's doing something else.

4. even if we don't see too much of the spanish players tomorrow, i think it's totally understandable. they had just finished 3rd in the conferations cup not so long ago. i rather not see them play tomorrow than to see them either getting injured or being tired and worn out towards the end of this season.

Sorry folks, past few days have been busy going around with the team.

Took some training photos (which I'll upload and share after tmr match) as well as photos of the exclusive meet-n-greet session held earlier at the hotel.

Actually, from what I observed, Alonso is most likely gona leave. His body language during training says it all... totally can't be bothered. Even during the meet-n-greet, he was pretty nonchalant. Come to think of it, Mascherano too was behaving like this. He just stood at one corner and kept on chatting with Reira.

The most friendly one was Kuyt. The smile never leaves his face. One can tell he is really loving it as a our player.

Anyway, enough of updates. Don't forget gates open at 4.30pm tomorrow.
Hopefully they can thrash the shit out of Singapore.

C ya at the stadium!! ;)

I totally agree with you bro.

To me, I support Liverpool because I love the club. Not just because of certain players. So what if Torres and his Spanish brothers do not play tomorrow, will you support the club less?

Or do you support Liverpool because there is Torres and Stevie. G? What if they're not around anymore come the next few seasons?

I know and understand some fans support certain clubs because of certain players plying their trade there... but to me, there can be only Liverpool - their history, their philosophy and their culture. This is what makes me a fan in the first place and will forever be.

To be able to see them come here is already a big thing for me. So Stevie G or not, I'm already feeling very blessed. :o

but i still do feel the organisers could have done more for the fans instead of pleasing the sponsors more.

past few days have been tiring following the lads around!

Felt the Spanish players, Kuyt, Agger and Rafa have been the best when it comes to fan interaction, especially Torres!
That man is a LEGEND! his dedication to our club and fans just makes so proud that we have signed such a player in this modern times of football where this is a rarity.

without Stevie its 5-0 , with him, prob 10-0 wont be out of the question..

the supporters who were there at the stadium bonded and sang and cheered along with oeach other...

but there of cos were a few cocks who wore MANU n chelski jerseys and were furiously booed and got a earful from the fans.. come on, even if ur not a reds dont go in with something tts gonna get u in 'danger'..

eventually the security had to escort such ppl out of the KOP stand.. lol

the worse was 1 with OWEN!!... in latest manu kit somemore..

and when the security walked to him, he immed whip out SG RED JERSEy and pted to it!! come on la.. bo liao rt..

in the end, he had to take off his shirt in public and put on th e SG kit before the boos and shouts settled down.. really silly lor.. the ticket no need $$?

Fantastic game, fantastic play, fantastic fans. It feels like you are sitting with 40,000 family members. The people around me are quite friendly. I sat at the grandstand. While I think it would be very fun to sit in the Kop stand, you got to see more things from the grandstand view. The teams lining up, the prize presentation and plus the flags and cards made by fans from the Kop stand. There was a group of 8 who stood up to hold the cards XABI STAY. quite cool. wasted that most of the people sitting in the kop stand would have missed out. there was a loud and sudden shout for 'WE WANT TORRES.' impressive indeed.

this match really brings back memories of the tiger cup and malaysia cup days. the kallang wave, the feet stomping before a free-kick/corner or before the wave hits you. the mass orgy at the toilets at half-time, the mad rush to go home, the way pedestrains cross the road in hundreds like they own the roads... very retro.

my only complaint is the STUPID HARRY'S drink stall. I took 50 mins to buy mineral water. damn slow. if they want a monopoly, they should be more efficient. i lost count of how many people walking up to scold the staff. when i got my drinks at 6.55pm, there's still a 50 m long queue behind me. Crazy.

Talk about T shirts. I say guys with the words 'Old Trafford 1-4' on their liverpool jersey. Guys with Justice 96 on their jerseys. The best one is this guy with a T-shirt that is a fake detergent advertisement. Basically the t-shirt is a before and after concept. Before shows a Man U AIG jersey, after shows a Liverpool Carlsberg jersey. In between these 2 jerseys is a box of detergent. The caption that follows is a classic. It says IT REALLY CLEANS THE SHIT OUT OF SCUM. Damn cool man. :D

kuyt~ the most under-rated player in the team. tis guy really dunno how to stop running... always gives his 110%, no matter it's a pre-season friendly, 1st 5 min or last 5 min of a games.. my MOM..

nemeth~ remind me of a young fowler.. v good finisher.. hope to see more of him, in the place of n'gog..

pacheco~ thou light weight, but comfortable with ball, good passing n vision.. it's his wonderful pass to kuyt which set up the last gol.. he & nemeth r the youngsters to look out for in the new season..

dagen~ main worry.. see nothing in him tat convinced me that he's good.. offer nothing in attack nor defense.. need reinforcement in RB if AA goes to madrid, as widely expected..

agger~ look comfortable in LB, but not offensive. LB is a position to reinforce if dossena moves. aurelio is injury proned, insua is maybe too young n inexperience to play whole season..

voronin~ not good enuf..

alonso~ how can he bear to leave when see such a crowd...!!!

nemeth was no.7 ? small built chap?

who was no.4? plesis? ..

i agree on degen.. he looked very normal when playing against our sg boys..

masch had all the crowd worried when he went down twice, grabbing his leg or something ... luckily just nothing happened.. but he still hounded around for the ball even if its friendly..

ngog looked just tall and big sized and he needed someone to play off him..

Glad to see Kuyt played really well - created 3 of the goals and deserved one himself.

Voronin - what can I say, poor game and can still manage to score as usual. Maybe he deserves a place on the bench.

The Alonso chats were awesome but I was a bit disappointed - where were the chants for Stevie and Nando?

One thing I realised - this is what the atmosphere is probably like at Anfield (excepting myabe the Kop). It was so quiet in the first half. I guess fans now wait for the team to lift them rather than the other way around. ;)

I hope you all enjoyed the match and atmosphere as much as I did last night!

Boy, it has been donkey years since I last attended a live match (last one was way back in the Malaysia Cup days). All my hair stood up when I saw the Kallang Wave making rounds after rounds through the stadium. Very mind-blowing.

When everyone sang You'll Never Walk Alone.. it certainly wasn't far off form the way it was done at Anfield. (Yup, I do a yearly pilgrimage to Anfield)

I'm glad that Rafa tried his best to play all the players.. this shows he really listen to the fans. Did you guys read the reports on Straits Times today. Freaking Nor Alam Shah... dare to elbow the second best Argentine in the world (well, we got to admit Messi is better than our Javier :p). I'll definitely break his arm if I were to see him. Full of crap.

Oh and did you guys saw the length of the skirt wore by Jamie Yeo? Phew.. freaking short. No wonder her Ang Mo dog (BF) kept on following her around whenever she goes, even to the pitch. Bloody idiot even had the audacity to go to the DJ to request certain songs to be played. Luckily the organizer had enough and gave him an earful.. after that, he LL sat at one corner and sulk. Irritating pest.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed myself hanging out with the team for the past 4-days.. and I sincerely believed we got what it takes to win no. 19! Especially if Nemeth can blossoms and become play a big part to support Torres.

GO LIVERPOOL GO!!!!

A bit of noise yes, but everyone was just watching the first half and then it got dull as time went on.

Right on bro....I was there and boy was it an emotional moment for me to be singing Liverpool anthem of "You'll never walk alone" cos finally for the first time i was there to support the team that I had been supporting as a kid..it doesn't matter to me whether Gerrard was going to make it or not...neither does it matter to me whether Alonso or Mascherano are going to stay..to me it is the team that matter most not the players..and I had bought myself a Liverpool jersey just a plain Mighty Red jersey no name no number...CO ask why don't get one with Gerrard or Torres and I simply answered...players come and go but Liverpool will forever be there...:o:o

spoken like a true red u r rite players cum n go liverpool will forever be there.

where were you in 2001? i remembered that someone was distributing our anthem lyrics at the now-Kop stand in 2001. Not many were familiar with the lyrics then. Chorus yes but non-chorus part, people weren't familiar then. Now i think more of us can sing the full song.

may i suggest something to print on your jersey? a name from the past? I saw keegan, dalglish, shankly on our new black jersey. a meaningful event from the past? i saw justice 96 on a new jersey too.

A bit of noise yes, but everyone was just watching the first half and then it got dull as time went on.

I was at the last row of the Kop, opposite you, so yes the noise would have been softer.

You came quite late right? 6.15? my side was noisy, just that due to a smaller crowd in the grandstand, total noise is lesser but i think every individual in the stadium is equally loud. of course, the $5 horn helps. :D Damn worth it. at my side, the ang mos sang, we participate with the horns.

Actually the best stand to be in is the south stand. 4 goals man. damn worth it. when they see kuyt charging down the right, the crowd there must be expecting goals already. and to see it actually materialise 3 times from kuyt's crosses... shiok man.

the simplest song to memorise after listening once is the Jamie Carragher song. We all dream of a team of carraghers... how to not remember the lyrics...

i was watching the replay. Claire Rourke from LFC.TV was actually in singapore. She'll give Jamie Yeo a run for beauty though Jamie will still win for sluttiness.

Personally i thought the crowd dinnoe many of our songs, even YNWA.
they only sang loud when it was time to sing Walk On...

I tried to start the crowd to sing the Javier Mascherano song (in the tune of 7 Nation Army) and We Won it 5 times but the response was sad as noone knew the songs :(

It definitely felt like Anfield with the singing only towards the end and majority of the fans just wanted to enjoy the footie.

Nemeth should have been given a chance at the first team last season.

whenever i watch the reserve games on lfctv, he always stands out.

Jordy Brouwer should be given a chance too if he's not on loan elsewhere.

Kelly,Darby and Spearing should expect more exposure too with the new rules on local players in the Champions League.

the new season does not look good for the Reds.
Arbeloa moves to Real Madrid is almost complete.
Alonso's future is still uncertain.
The Two Americans had refinanced their loans,so look like they will not be selling their stakes,so no much funds to buy new players.

Alonso will stay I think unless Real are playing a game on the 30m transfer fee and will cough it up at the last minute.

If Arb and Doss go, we can use the money to get another striker/winger, or a fullback. We are a bit light in those areas.

Perez dont rate DM players very well and that well documented by makelele. who wanted a higher wage in line with the star players. of course as we all know he was shipped to chelski.. Im glad rafa WANTS the player to openly state their transfer request. I think alonso is like stuck in 2minds.. to stay on and become a legend( lower wages due to tax rules.. and to check his pride after the incident when rafa try to offload him) or to move to Real where he knows he wont be 1 of the real stars of the team anymore. Real has a whole bunch of highly paid stars and alonso will just be another one in the sky..

but at liverpool he knows that the fans will adore him much much more than at real...

im looking so much to this year... with the oil rich dubai's $$$ i look forward to manc growth. will they overtake manure this year? SInce their own boy wonder has left and SAF resigned our EX* boy wonder now crocked doll ...

and the gunners are going through another transition again!!?? how many of those have they underwent? and chelski pales in comparison to manc now in terms of the cash they use to splash to buy players.. How will angelo turn out? Is he Hiddink in disguise or Scolari once more??..

As for our beloved reds, if we can secure JM+ XA and not have them go anywhere else, and have Torres9 fit for the whole year... + GJ .. im really excited about the season ahead.. :D

arby completed his 3.5 mil transfer to real...
good luck to him and thank for his contribution... a quiet and solid defender...
he has been having problem of homesick since last season... and guess he feels he has something to prove at real (he came thru real youth set up, and was sold after making few appearance)... so real offer is just too good for him to turn down...

doss 4 mil transfer was delyed due to his wage...

so both sale will only fetch us 7.5 mil... but will take 60~80k off our weekly wages..

seems rafa is putting his faith on daggen and youngsters like darby, insua, kelly to cover both fullbacks position.. think will see agger playing LB if necessary..

Degen - doesn't cross fast enough, too many tricks

Insua - everything good but can't cross

Darby - needs more games.

Kelly - potential to be our next Hyypia to me.

we have to keep Alonso, and then i will be confident of seeing number 19 back at Anfield.

Liverpool FC's Xabi Alonso hands in transfer request

Jul 30 2009 EXCLUSIVE by James Pearce

XABI ALONSO’S proposed transfer to Real Madrid moved a step closer today after the Spaniard put in a written transfer request.

The 27-year-old’s future has been the subject of intense speculation this summer with Real officials repeatedly stating their desire to sign the midfielder.

Kop favourite Alonso has consistently refused to publicly reveal his intentions and boss Rafa Benitez has always insisted he didn’t want to sell the Spanish international.

However, Alonso has now finally confirmed in writing to the club that he sees his future away from Anfield.

Alonso was one the first players to sign for Benitez, along with Luis Garcia, with a £10.5million move from Real Sociedad in August 2004.

He made his debut at Bolton's Reebok Stadium on August 29, 2004 and two months later turned in an eye-catching performance against Fulham at Craven Cottage which saw him emerge as a new fans favourite among the Anfield faithful.

In June last year Alonso penned a new five-year deal, though much of the following campaign was spent on the sidelines with a metatarsal injury.

He recovered for Euro 2008 as Spain defeated Germany in the final. Alonso featured three times from the bench and captained his country in the final group game against Greece.

With his confidence sky high, he went on to enjoy perhaps his finest season to date as Liverpool took the 2008-09 Premier League title race to the wire.

We are not going to go to pieces without him. Rafa has got to be creative in his imagination and find a replacement and a system that works. Lots of other championship teams in England have lost their top players and gone on to win more trophies (don't need me to name names eh??) ;)

I will be devastated if Rafa agrees to let him go and looks like we will have to go back to rebuilding cos thats how important Xabi's role is to the team.

Rafa might not want Alonso to leave (actually, no manager will!) but he might be pressured to sell him. *sigh* Can some rich Dubai Prince please come and kick the yankees off??

Reason No.1 - Alonso's best friend was Arbeloa.
Reason No.2 - Alonso dun mix well with the others.
Reason No.3 - Both he & Arbeloa cannot stand the bossing of Carragher.
Reason No.4 - He has complained about Benitez as being a "slave-driver" (and this has caused tension in his relationship with the Boss that they dun speak to each other anymore unless necessary and only on football matters).
Reason No.5 - He will be taking home less $$$ with the implementation of the new tax laws.
Reason No.6 - He felt betrayed by the actions of Anfield board last season in trying to offload him.
Reason No.7 - He feels offended by the disgusting english bitches who would never leave him alone whenever we go clubbing.
Reason No.8 - He is of the opinion that Liverpool has gone as far as it could and will be going downhill from now onwards especially with the American jokers still in charge.

Sky Sports football pundit Guillem Balague believes Xabi Alonso has not put in a transfer request at Liverpool.

According to reports, Xabi Alonso handed in a transfer request today morning admist speculation from Spain linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

However, Balague claim’s ‘Alonso camp’ is denying handing in any such request.

Balague said: “I can only say that this is a very complicated situation and I am hearing conflicting versions of events: the player’s entourage are denying that Xabi Alonso has handed in a transfer request; while on the other hand, Liverpool Football Club insists that a transfer request was submitted to the club last night, and it has been suggested that the paperwork was prepared at least a month in advance.

“I am of the opinion that the decision to make this public knowledge represents an attempt to speed up the negotiations while simultaneously making it known that it is the player who wants to leave.

“As has been widely reported, Rafa Benitez had effectively placed a 48 hour deadline on the deal and it is apparent that Liverpool want this matter resolved once and for all, today, so that they can plan for life with, or without, Alonso from tomorrow. However, Real Madrid – or should we say Florentino Perez – may stubbornly refuse to be seen to pressured into reacting to any ultimatum and, furthermore, the Spanish club are encountering difficulties in offloading players to raise funds and free up space in an overloaded squad.

“On the other hand, it is possible that a fee could be agreed today and that Liverpool accept an immediate first instalment with subsequent payments made at a later date covering the total amount.

“The ball has now been placed in Real Madrid’s court and it is impossible to second guess what their next move will be. It is evident that at least one party wants the matter resolved today, but whether or not they get their wish remains to be seen.”

so is it the club who wanna sell him?
my only theories lead to needing the money for an already found replacement.

to be fair, Alonso was already quite established at Sociedad and already was playing for Spain when he signed for us. Real were interested then too.

we need someone established to replace him, and if it is Aquilani, i will look forward to seeing his wife at the matches :D

A very good read for those who blame Rafa for Alonso saga especially the part where RM didn't attempt to sign Alonso when he is available last season and also how the owner had undermine Rafa position:D

[QUOTE=THERE is a theory doing the rounds that Xabi Alonso would be fully justified to leave Liverpool this summer because Rafa Benitez was willing to sell him this time last year. As long as there is a transfer market and the principle of freedom of movement is enshrined in the EU constitution players will be free to come and go as they please, contract permitting of course.

But if Alonso does intend to swop Anfield for the Bernabeu then he can’t really use the fact that his manager considered cashing in on him after a below par season as an excuse, no matter how bitterly upsetting that situation was.

Yes, Benitez’s admission that he was willing to listen to offers for the Spanish midfielder will have fractured their relationship to the point which Alonso is no longer willing to describe it as anything more than “professional”.
And yes, Alonso is well within his rights to feel a lingering sense of harsh treatment having committed himself to Liverpool by signing a new long term contract with the club just 12 months before his manager considered flogging him to Juventus. But since then Alonso has gone on to recapture his very best form and has just enjoyed arguably his best season in a red shirt, rivalling the superlative Steven Gerrard for the title of Liverpool’s star man during the 2008/09 campaign. He couldn’t have done that without the backing of his manager who picked him in the vast majority of Liverpool’s games and who trusted him to continue his role as conductor of the Anfield side’s orchestra. Alonso could hardly claim to have been made an outcast.

Indeed, Benitez could quite justifiably point to the fact that he himself found out in the harshest possible manner that he was expendable when Tom Hicks and George Gillett held talks with Jurgen Klinsmann behind his back. Having been undermined in such a manner many people within football expected Benitez to walk away from Anfield and find a new job at a club where his position would be much more secure. He didn’t though. The Spaniard battled for his job and fought so well that he ended up signing a new five year contract which ties him to Liverpool until 2013 despite what had gone on before.

Alonso could walk away. He could decide that the grass is greener at the Bernabeu and that he no longer wants to play for a manager who tried to sell him. But then again, he could let bygones be bygones, remember that it was Benitez who gave him one of the finest platforms in European football to perform on and pledge his future to Liverpool once again. He could also consider the fact that while Benitez may not have wanted him last summer neither did his current suitors Real Madrid who showed no inclination to sign him when it was clear to everyone that Alonso was available.

There is a school of thought which suggests that Liverpool cannot afford to keep an unhappy player, a theory which also applies to Javier Mascherano.
But maybe this is one occasion when international football will actually come to Benitez’s aid because whether Alonso and Mascherano are happy or not they are going to have to play well in the coming months to make it to the World Cup on top form. At the very least, Alonso and Mascherano owe Liverpool another year and if the Reds manage to hang on to their central midfield duo it could be the most important bit of business they do this summer.[/QUOTE]

If Alonso leaves, he will be hard to replace as there will be no one orchestrating all the attacking moves.
Liverpool can't depend on Lucas as he isn't good enough.

Reports in Italy claim that midfielder Alberto Aquilani has been lined up as Alonso's replacement.
Cash-strapped Roma are willing to sell for around £15m

But the formal negotiations cannot take place until the Alonso deal is settled.

Guess we all have to wait till Mon then we will know whether Alonso is leaving for RM anot.

sg cant do wat xabi can cos sg got no tactical disipline to stay jus in front the back 4,he will drag himself all over the pitch n pool will lose thier shape,if u ask me alonso did all the hard work in the middle of the park last season allowing our skipper to do wat he s gd at attacking,i guess the fans realise that. thats y the stay xabi campaign.if u remember the champs league final pool were completely out played in the 1st half till alonso n hamman took control in the 2nd half n pushed sg further forward.even capello uses sg on the right of midfield 4 england.thats y he s the best attacking midfielder now in europe.

Come on bros, Alonso has played a key role in the team but that is not to say we can't do without him!

Before Xabi there was Hamann, as hawksbay pointed out and was one of the best of Houllier's signings. Pool have had no shortage of worldclass midfielders in its history.

Rafa will find a replacement and/or find a new system to fit the players we have. One day, Stevie and Carra will be gone too.

One thing I agree, Stevie G has got to remain forward, we need his goals.

I'm more worried about what is going to get our opponents RED CARDED next season heheheh. ;)

Liverpool FC close to selling Xabi Alonso as Real Madrid agree fee

Aug 3 2009 Liverpool Daily Post

XABI ALONSO’S departure from Liverpool is close to being sealed after Real Madrid agreed to meet Liverpool’s asking price.

The Spaniards have indicated they will go to a fee in the region of £30million to secure Alonso the move he has been craving all summer.

Anfield officials met with Real executive director-general José Ángel Sánchez yesterday and they stepped up their bid to finally bring an end to their pursuit of the playmaker.

Real capitalised on the fact that Liverpool were in Spain last night and held the talks in the team hotel in Barcelona prior to the 3-0 friendly defeat at the hands of Espanyol.

Although a deal was not struck, sufficient progress was made to convince Madrid that a final agreement is close.

Rafael Benitez has insisted all along that he will not accept a knockdown offer for the 27-year-old despite Alonso having indicated that he is ready to leave Anfield.

And the Liverpool manager’s patience appears to be paying off as Real finally got closer to the kind of bid he is looking for.

With Roma star Alberto Aquilani already lined up as Alonso’s successor Benitez will be keen for Real to put their money where their mouth has been and finally bring an end to the transfer saga.

The chances of that happening appear to have been boosted after reports in Spain suggested that the Bernabeu coffers will shortly be swollen to the tune of £18m due to the impending sale of Dutchman Wesley Sneijder to Inter Milan.

One of the main sticking points in Real’s pursuit of Alonso in recent weeks has been their insistence that they did not have the ready cash to meet Benitez’s demands following a spending spree that has seen them spend in excess of £165m on Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema.

Benitez has always remained adamant that this is not his nor Liverpool’s problem however and has continually made it clear that unless his value of Alonso is met then he will not be allowed to leave.

With the two parties now edging closer to an agreement and with a channel of communication now flowing freely again between Anfield and the Bernabeu it is looking increasingly likely that a deal will be struck in the coming days.

Benitez’s reluctance to give Alonso any more than a substitute’s appearance in the dying stages of last nights’s defeat at the hands of Espanyol was a telling sign of how close an agreement is with the Liverpool manager clearly unwilling to put the Spanish international at risk of the kind of injury that could place the deal in jeopardy.

Alonso’s presence was sorely missed, particularly in the second half as Liverpool struggled with their passing and allowed Espanyol to take full advantage.

Daniel Agger missed the game with a recurring back problem and was today due to undergo treatment at Melwood after Liverpool returned to Merseyside in the early hours of this morning.

Sad to say things are really not looking good for us. Not just the pending departure(s?) of Alonso (and Mascherano?) but also the very poor pre-season warm up so far. Kick off is just 2 weeks away and if the players are not match fit now i dun know when they will be. We need to hit the ground running (like last year) and then sustain our form into next year (unlike this year)....if we start badly and end up having to play catch up the rest of the season, it ll be difficult....sigh.....

I'm still alittle hopeful Alonso's deal will breakdown, considering Real are looking at Defour as a replacement.

I would love to see Joe Cole at Anfield but he's too injury prone.

I think right now the only players who can join us and make me feel happy for selling Alonso is Villa and Ribery, which wont happen im sure.

i havent been this sad over a transfer since maybe McManaman left for Real.
even Fowler to Leeds did not bother me this much.

No offence to Xabi, I will take 30m pounds anytime (it was just over half that amount one year ago!).

Some bros are again feeling their morale drop. Let's look at it this way: we did not win the title in the five years that Xabi was here - not blaming him of course but maybe it's time for a change for someone in the middle who has more pace.

I'm actually surprised Rafa did not want a swap deal (or at least player plus cash) with Real. Surely there are some attacking players there who would bolster our attack? Are we really going with Babel and Ngog as backup (and for goodness sake, Voro)? Our attack worries me more than the midfield, to be honest. ;)

I agree. Rafa's mind games only affect his own mind and team morale. He should just talk lesser.

Aquilani's transfer was done less than 24 hours after Xabi's sold. I wonder how serious Rafa was about keeping Alonso. Could Roma have pressured Rafa enough for Rafa to apply pressure to Alonso and Real to hurry their decision?

Imagine a man trying to persuade his wife not to divorce him. In the end, the wife chose to continue with the divorce despite the man's pleas. And the man remarries less than 1 day after his previous wife divorced him. Will you wonder how sincere the man was when he tried to persuade his previous wife to stay committed?

Di Matteo too, i believe Aquilani will do better in Liverpool than Roma because we have better medical staff and he is not gonna be one of the top 3 star players at Liverpool, so he won't be rushed back to fitness like he always gets at Roma.

speaking of Italians, I felt Dossena has been having a quite decent pre season and his assist against Lyn was pretty positive.
I think Dossena, if he stays, can be a very effective left winger instead of a left back.

Italian soccer r declining for the past few years, IMHO it is more difficult to play in english league. signing Aquilani is a very huge gamble....
