SINGAPORE: More than 3,000 people gathered in Ang Mo Kio on Sunday (Jan 17) to mark Pongal, a Tamil harvest festival.
The event was organised by the Cheng San-Seletar division, and took place at Cheng San Community Club and the Ang Mo Kio 3G Centre.
Pongal is a four-day long harvest festival originating in Tamil Nadu, a state in India. It symbolises thanksgiving to nature, and takes place between January and February, the season when rice and other cereals are harvested.
Guest-of-honour Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency, joined in the festivities which aimed to bond residents by promoting social cohesiveness and racial harmony.
There were games and other activities at the event, such as food tasting and a colouring competition.
