BANGKOK: Tigerair Flight TR2177 that was en route from Thailand's Chiang Mai to Singapore was diverted to Suvarnabhumi International Airport in the capital Bangkok on Tuesday evening (Jan 12) after a Singaporean man died on board.

The 58-year-old passenger, named by Thai news site Khaosod as Mr Seet Ngow Chai, had been travelling with his Thai wife and three family members at the time, local media reported.

A spokesperson for the budget airline said the passenger had collapsed on board and confirmed that he had been travelling with family. "Our immediate concern is for these next of kin and we are doing what we can to assist them," the spokesperson said.

The airline added that the original flight continued back from Bangkok and landed safely in Singapore on Tuesday evening with the rest of the passengers.

Thai PBS reported that the man's wife told airport officials that her husband was suffering from chronic illness.

Further investigations are being carried out by Thai police. His body has been taken to the Police General Hospital for an autopsy, Thai PBS stated.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this article referred to the flight diversion as an emergency landing. Tigerair has clarified that this term only applies when there is an issue with the aircraft itself.
