TRONG: When little Oon Sheng Juin walked through the gates of SJK Aik Hua this morning to begin his first day as a Year One pupil, he wasn’t joined by hordes of other children.

He was, after all, the only pupil in the whole school.

If Oon’s first day is anything to go by, he looks set to receive personalised attention throughout this whole school year.

When reporters visited the school, located in a fishing village at Pulau Pasir Hitam near here today, lessons for Oon was already in full swing.

The lone pupil was had the full undivided attention of his teacher, Tan Boon Lin, who teaches the boy English, Physical Education, Science, Moral Education and Arts.

Tan's colleague Chuah Hooi Tee is Oon's class teacher.

Asked if he was fine with being the only pupil at school, Oon simply nodded.

This is the first year that the school is in danger of being closed down due to having zero enrolment.

A philanthropist had agreed to sponsor Oon for RM500 monthly to study at the school.

Headmistress Hee Kam Foong, 51, said when she first became the school’s headmistress in 2013, they had five pupils.

“Last year, we had two pupils in Year Six but after they completed their studies, we were left with none," she said.

"Hopefully Oon will not be lonely next year as another villager has agreed to send his child to study at the school," she added.

Perak Chinese School Boards Association chairman Datuk Lee Kon Yin, who visited the school, said a developer has agreed to relocate SJK Aik Hua to either to Kuala Lumpur or Nilai.

"We are waiting for the developer to get back to us on the latest plan," he said.

Of the 185 Chinese primary schools in Perak, he said at least 10 of them had low pupil enrolment.
