I am sorry my English not is native tongue. I am from Pakistan but born in Afghanistan.

Deep throat kissing means putting tongue deep in the mouth until the throat if possible.

The way you talk i thought you were India Hindu or Punjab????
Anyways, don't wanna be mean, but Brown is perhaps the most despised customer group by Classic girls (along with Black, Arabs, and then Ang Mo).

As per my local contact and discussion with a mommy there, a few mommy group/sofas will absolutely avoid your type, because their girls not willing to go so low for money, and it will alienate their local or Asian customers when they see Brownies with their girls.

A few of the less popular mommy/girls will cater to you, but they are the ones willing to fuck Browns just for the money and never the good ones. The cherry girls will never also. Just sit at a chair and observe this: when a local/Jap guy walks in ALL mommies rush to him to try help him, but when you see Brown/Arab customer comes they are basically ignored except one or two mommies desperate to sell some girls for quotas.

Not sure why you are willing to patron a place that only just tolerates your kind and treats you like a second class citisen. Especially since the service there is not even that good anyways. There are so many other places where you would get treated better (like DeLila, Bats, BlokM etc.. )

A 4.2 earthquake was recorded in Karangasem, Bali on Tuesday afternoon, near Bali’s Mount Agung volcano.

The earthquake comes during fears of an eruption from Agung, which is at the highest alert level at the moment.

125670

Recorded at 4:28pm, the earthquake could reportedly be felt in Karangasem, Gianyar, Denpasar, and even all the way down in Nusa Dua and Kuta for some.

The depth of the quake was five kilometers, according to data from the Bali Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

Increasingly frequent volcanic activity has all eyes on Agung. Tremors are coming more and more often, a sign that molten magma is still rising towards the surface, says the national disaster mitigation agency.

As of Tuesday, over 75,000 local residents have been evacuated from the danger zone and areas just outside the designation.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo flew in to Bali this week to visit crowded aid centers.

While ride-sharing services like Uber and Grab (locally known as “online taxi” in Indonesia) recently had many of the legal constraints placed upon them by the government removed by a surprising Supreme Court decision, there are evidently still those who are less than thrilled about their presence.

Today, a video is circulating online showing a mob flipping a red car over onto its side outside a mall on Batam island.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFOSEc2b_iE

According to reports, the car was parked outside Mega Mall Batam today while the driver was waiting to pick up a passenger. Suddenly, a mob of unidentified men came over and flipped the car, reportedly because they thought that it’s an online taxi.

“The incident is real and we are handling it,” said Grand Commissioner Hengki, head of the Balerang Precinct, as quoted by Kompas today.

However, the police said that the car is not, in fact, an online taxi.

“The driver was picking up his wife who was shopping,” Hengki said.

Police have arrested one member of the mob and are searching for others. Their motive for flipping the car over is yet to be determined.

There are no reports as to whether or not the driver was injured during the mob attack.

Indonesia is home to many terrifying creatures such as giant man-eating pythons, crocodiles and Komodo dragons. But, to our knowledge, none of those have grounded an airplane before. However, that feat has been accomplished by a humble bee… and a swarm featuring several thousand of his closest friends.

The incident took place on Friday at Medan’s Kualanamu International Airport shortly after Citilink Indonesia flight QG 885 from Bantam landed at around 11:40am. Just as the plane was shuttling to its parking spot, passengers were alarmed to see that the vehicle’s right wing was suddenly surrounded by a swarm of bees. Photos of the thick black cloud clinging to the plane quickly went viral on social media.

Citilink’s vice president of corporate communication, Benny S Butarbutar, confirmed the event had taken place and noting that all passengers had been deplaned safely at the terminal while ground staff attended to the bee problem.

https://photouploads.com/images/5f029f.jpg

“At 12:30pm the bees were removed by spraying the wing with water from the airport fire extinguisher unit so that the wings would be clean again,” Benny told Tribun.

Benny said that after the bees were removed, the entire plane was reexamined according to flight safety and security procedures. No technical problems were found so the plane was eventually allowed to proceed on its return trip to Batam. Although the bees managed to cause a 90-minute delay, the plane arrived in Batam safely and without further incident.

As for what caused the bee’s odd behavior in the first place, Benny said it was still being investigated by airport officials. In fact, he said that similar insect incidents had taken place, though never to such a terrifying degree.

He said one theory was that logging activity in the area had disrupted the bees natural habitat, causing them to look for new locations to set up their hives.

A Singaporean man has been nabbed in Batam, accused of molesting three boys in the Indonesian island 31km away from the city-state.

The Jakarta Post reported that the 46-year-old entrepreneur is believed to have sexually assaulted boys aged 12, 15 and 16 in an art gallery where he teaches and resides. The offences were said to have been committed between Sept 16 and 24 in the Nongsa area.

It was only when the parents of one of the alleged victims filed a police report that the Singaporean was arrested.

The man was also said to have offered the victims money, and that he told investigators that he worked as a freelancer and a driver in Batam. The gallery itself was believed to have been used to lure the alleged victims.

Batam police added that he had been living on the island for over three years already, and had overstayed his visa.

He’ll face up to 15 years in jail and a 5 billion rupiah (S$500,000) fine should he be convicted.

Dozens more injured in two blasts and fire at factory on outskirts of Jakarta that opened just two months ago

131381

At least 47 people have been reported after explosions ripped through an Indonesian factory pumping out fireworks.

Part of the building outside of Jakarta was left in ruins after the blast on Thursday, images from local media show.

Police said that the explosion had killed at least 47 people, though the death toll could rise with dozens more injured.

Two explosions were reported before police entering the factory, which had just begun operating two months ago, found the dead bodies.

It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion.

Indonesia has got a reputation for its freaky fauna, from man-eating snakes to… man-eating crocodiles. But this insect found in the home of one man in Semarang, Central Java, recently may take the crown for creepiest-looking critter in the country.

The creature’s rise to viral infamy started on Oct 19, when a Facebook user named Gandik, who lives in Semarang, uploaded a picture and video to his account with the simple, understated caption: “Just found a butterfly like this”.

With its glistening reddish thorax erupting into four tentacle-like protrusions covered in wiry hairs, it looks more like something you’d find on a terrifying alien planet than a house in Central Java.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdpsFZBZ8EY

But this insect is most definitely from Earth. Entomologists quickly identified the creature as creatonotos gangis, a type of moth found in parts of Southeast Asia and Australia. The beast’s hairy “tentacles” are actually sensory organs called coremata which are used to produce a mate-attracting pheromone (which makes sense because how else is something that scary looking going to find mate).

So if you have the misfortune to come across one of these monstrous moths in your home, you don’t need to panic as it is perfectly harmless to humans. Though if you ran out of your house screaming in terror anyways, we’d totally understand.

Indonesian officials on lookout for David Bond, ‘pick up artist’ accused of sexually exploiting women throughout Asia

132329

Indonesian authorities say they are looking into reports that an American Youtuber who sells video guides on how to sexually exploit Asian women is currently in the country.

The misogynistic creep, who goes by David Bond (real name David Campbell), has toured extensively throughout Asia, where he has filmed vlogs sharing his experiences on picking up and bedding girls in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand, among others. He sells his videos online via his WordPress websites, and there have been accusations that he has sold his sex tapes featuring unwitting women he picked up to premium customers.

The latest videos on Campbell’s Youtube channel were shot in Jakarta. One of the videos, posted yesterday, documents Campbell and his friend, who goes by Josh/Yoshi in the video, meeting up with two girls and visiting West Jakarta’s Central Park mall, Kota Tua (Old Town), and Monas (National Monument).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWByG43NSew&t=69s

If you refuse to click the video out of disgust, your apprehension is not unfounded as the video is filled with misogynistic and racist comments. Campbell and his friend also are seemingly unaware of Indonesia’s blasphemy laws, mocking religion at several points throughout the video.

Here are some of the most infuriating quotes we picked out from the video:

“If I made out with a girl here, I’d probably get killed by ISIS. I would, and she would, like be burned at the stake or something.”

“Basically, Western girls or American girls, they dress really slutty. Do you know the word “slutty”? They dress like hooker [sic]. So it’s really confusing. Seems like in Asia if a girl is actually a kid, she dresses like a kid, not like frickin’ Miley Cyrus.”

“Do you not listen to the ‘aaa’ (coming from the mosque)? I’m the one with the microphone, with the big speaker, waking everyone up when they’re sleeping.”

“She was wearing underwear with a fake butt. Dude, for real man. I felt it.”

The news of Campbell’s arrival to Jakarta has also been widely shared in viral posts on Facebook, telling women to exercise caution should they meet him or his friend.

Indonesian authorities have also been made aware of Campbell, with the Jakarta Metro Police saying he could potentially be investigated and the Immigration Office saying an intel team would monitor him and his friend while they’re here.

Two years ago, a petition was launched on change.org urging WordPress to take down Campbell’s website. The petition, which has been closed but reveals Campbell’s sexcapades in Asia in more detail, can be found here. Sadly, it doesn’t seem to have accomplished its goal as Campbell’s websites are still accessible online.

New Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan shuts down infamous Alexis Hotel, fulfilling campaign promise

http://polyfedelicio.us/imgs/images/2017/11/06/a1.jpg

The Alexis Hotel has long been rumored to be Jakarta’s most luxurious brothel, with even its own website declaring it the “pioneer that sets the benchmark for adult one stop entertainment hotel” and “the dreamland for men”. But the dream is officially over at the hotel, with recently inaugurated Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan effectively fulfilling his campaign promise to shutter the alleged prostitution palace by not renewing its business license.

“We have made the decision not to extend the business license for Alexis,” Anies said at Jakarta City Hall today as quoted by Kompas.

“We are firm, we do not want Jakarta to be a city that allows the practice of prostitution practices and we have heard reports and complaints from citizens, as well as news,” he said.

Anies did not specify if the decision was also based on official investigations into the hotel’s business or if it was based primarily on public complaints, but he implied that the government had more information on Alexis’ practices.

Without its business license, which officially expired last Friday, Anies said the hotel can no longer legally engage in any commercial activities.

Governor Anies originally made his promise to shut Alexis during one of the televised debates before the first round of the last gubernatorial election. Anies had criticized former Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama for only focusing on getting rid of the problem of prostitution and drugs at the street level (such as the Kalijodo evictions) while ignoring high-class establishments like Alexis. Ahok countered by saying his administration had already shut down two infamous nightlife establishments, Stadium and Milles.

The Jakarta Tourism Ministry previously defended allowing the Alexis Hotel to stay in business, saying they had checked it out and found the prostitution rumors to not be true.

Many of Anies’ supporters will no doubt be pleased to hear that he has made good on his campaign promise. The interesting question now will be to see if the new governor’s administration will be consistent and carry on with shutting down Jakarta’s other infamous “adult entertainment” establishments such as Malioboro, Illegals and Classic Hotel, which are also widely believed to be prostitution hotspots, not to mention the dozens if not hundreds of lesser-known massage parlors, spas and “executive lounges” throughout Jakarta where commercial sex is rumored to be on offer.

Woman, 7-months pregnant, arrested for soliciting herself and friend for threesome, says she needed money for hospital fees

http://polyfedelicio.us/imgs/images/2017/11/06/a1.png

Last week’s big news in Jakarta was the closure of the Alexis Hotel, which recently inaugurated Governor Anies Baswedan said was just the beginning of a moral crusade to eradicate prostitution in the capital. The mayor of Surabaya, Tri Rismaharini, has been on a similar crusade during her years in office. Her decision to close Dolly, once Indonesia’s biggest red-light district, in 2014 was hailed by many in the East Java capital as a moral victory, but many women’s rights advocates and public health experts say that it mainly succeeded in driving desperate sex workers further underground into more dangerous work.

It’s important context to understand the story of a woman who was arrested in Surabaya last week for allegedly prostituting herself and a friend through social media. Police say they arrested the 27-year-old, identified by her initials FWS, last Monday while she and her friend were with a customer in a hotel room.

“The suspect was arrested on October 30, 2017. She was arrested because she offered a threesome sex service. When she was arrested, the victim, as well as the suspect, were naked, serving a guest in room number 302 in a hotel in South Surabaya,” said Lily Djafa, head of public relations for the Surabaya Police, at a press conference last Thursday as quoted by Liputan 6.

The act of prostitution is actually in and of itself not illegal in Indonesia, but since FWS offered her friend’s services as well through her Facebook account, she was charged under the 2007 Human Trafficking Law, as well as under articles of the country’s Criminal Code covering coercion of others into lewd acts and profiting from a woman having sex. Under the Human Trafficking Law, she could face up a maximum penalty of 15 years in jail.

According to police, FWS had offered up the services of herself and her friend for IDR700,000 (US$50) for two hours. She was supposed to have received IDR300,000 while her friend was to receive IDR400,000 (and yet despite making less money FWS is being charged with exploiting her friend).

Of course, the saddest aspect of the case is that FWS is 7 months pregnant. She told police and the media that the money was supposed to cover the costs of her labor at the hospital.

“I am seven months pregnant, but (when I was arrested) my husband did not know that I was working, I did this because our economic needs are very urgent,” she said at the press conference while wearing a white mask to help protect her identity.

While the costs of childbirth at a hospital should theoretically be covered by Indonesia’s national health insurance program (BPJS), in reality many people don’t know about the program or aren’t signed up for it and many hospitals have been known not to accept it despite being required to. For example, one woman with labor complications tragically saw her baby die after she was refused care by seven hospitals in Bekasi despite being enrolled in BPJS.

The crusade against prostitution is supposed to be about helping to protect vulnerable women. And yet here it seems we have is a case in which a woman who was desperate to make money to help her baby will likely face jail time for trying to help her friend earn money as well. Now her life and her child’s life are likely ruined. Some moral victory.

Dolly Revisited: The brothels are gone but the sex trade lives on

http://polyfedelicio.us/imgs/images/2017/11/06/a154230.jpg

The end of Dolly’s glory days
Dolly was nothing like how we pictured it to be. Before its shutdown, people used to say that the Surabayan red-light district was a beacon of sexual liberation in Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population in the world.

Ask anyone who visited Dolly in its heyday, and they’ll tell you about the red light district’s raucous and debaucherous atmosphere. Dolly, which is comprised of one main lane that stems into countless other lanes, used to be jam-packed every night with head-pumping disco and dangdut music blaring from every corner. The prostitutes were conspicuously displayed in their brothels like mannequins in storefront windows as far as the eye could see. Anyone could venture into Dolly for its sexual services without having to worry about being judged.

But Dolly, once Southeast Asia’s largest red-light district, is now a ghost town.

The Surabaya city government officially shut down sexual practices in Dolly on June 18, 2014. Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini, who was recently named one of the Best Mayors in the World for “energetically promoting her social, economic and environmental policies in Indonesia’s second-largest city,” was the main force behind Dolly’s closure. Around 1,500 sex workers were evicted from Dolly Lane and the adjacent Jarak Street. Critics said that the shutdown would only drive Dolly’s evicted sex workers underground, bringing about new problems regarding the safety and sexual health of both the prostitutes and their clients. These issues, along with other political and social implications of such an abrupt shutdown, still linger today.

http://polyfedelicio.us/imgs/images/2017/11/06/a3.jpg

We visited Surabaya five months after Dolly’s official shutdown. There, we met with three prostitutes with very distinct backgrounds, and learned about how their lives were affected in the time since Dolly ceased to be the debauchery capital of Southeast Asia.

Transforming Dolly
It is during the day that the positive effects of the shutdown become apparent. Kids are now out playing in the open on Dolly Lane. Their parents no longer have to worry about the negative influence of the sex trade going on around them. There were a surprising number of kids in the neighborhood, and one can only wonder how they would have been influenced by the thriving brothels of Dolly’s yesteryears.

Saving children from the effects of prostitution (and from prostitution itself) is one of the main reasons Surabaya’s Mayor Risma was so adamant about shutting Dolly down.

But the fates of the local adults who depended on Dolly’s sex industry hangs in the balance. Critics argued that the brothel complex’s closure would devastate the local economy and lead to hostile resistance – not just from sex workers, but also from residents in neighborhoods near Dolly.

Surabaya’s Deputy Mayor, Wisnu Sakti Buana, who grew up in a neighborhood next to Dolly, argued that its shutdown has broader implications on the lives of people who weren’t directly involved in the sex industry. He opposed his superior’s plan to shut down Dolly for this exact reason.

“The shutdown was rushed. If the shutdown happens suddenly, what happens to the locals there who are also citizens of Surabaya?” Wisnu said.

“We were thinking about their fates from the beginning. Not the prostitutes, not the pimps. Most of them aren’t from Surabaya anyway. But [this is about] the citizens of Surabaya who make a living in the area, such as clothing designers, laundry owners and parking attendants.”

Now that Dolly has become a ghost town , Wisnu said that people in the neighborhood can no longer rely on tourists for income. The government was so keen to rid Dolly of prostitution that they neglected to consider the economic needs of the locals.

http://polyfedelicio.us/imgs/images/2017/11/06/a2.jpg

“The reality is that the government only gave financial compensation of Rp 5 million (around US$ 400) each to prostitutes and pimps [to leave Dolly]. The thousands of other citizens affected by the shutdown didn’t get compensated. Why did it end up like this? How did this happen?” he said.

For all its worth, the city government is slowly trying to transform Dolly into a thriving industrial area. When we were there, Dolly had been officially shut down for five months, but only one brothel had been renovated into a working factory.

They named it the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Center. It is effectively a small factory that produces whatever is being demanded of them. At the time, the workers there were producing cheap Indonesian soccer cleats.

It soon became apparent that there were no former prostitutes being trained and working in this small factory. These new opportunities were only being presented to those who lived in and around Dolly, i.e. locals with official documentation and Surabaya ID cards.

But this was just one small factory that only employed around 100 workers. It may be a start, but it’s not nearly enough to provide for the thousands of other locals who depended on Dolly.

“In reality sex workers and pimps made up only 10% of the number of people who made a living here in Dolly. The other 14,000 people, they still haven’t been dealt with,” said Anis Sadah, a human rights activist who opposed Dolly’s shutdown.

“And up to this moment, this matter hasn’t been touched on, [not even by] human rights institutions.”

The girls

Anis, who wears a hijab, also worries about the sex workers. She believes that the problem of prostitution is a humanitarian issue, not a religious or political matter.

Even after receiving Rp 5 million compensation from the government, many prostitutes, like the girls we interviewed, still had no choice but to keep working in the sex industry. Only now, working in the sex industry in Surabaya presents greater dangers than ever before.

For example. sex workers in Dolly used to receive monthly HIV and STD checks from the city health department. Brothels also generally enforced the government’s “100% condom use” approach to HIV prevention among sex workers. But girls working in Surabaya’s new underground sex trade often report feeling too afraid to force their clients to use condoms.

“Prostitution exists even without anyone protecting it. It’s always there. But this is about how we give the people involved, especially the women, a sense of security,” Anis said.

“They must feel that there’s security for them, that there’s social and health insurance for them. And once they can no longer work here, they can survive on their own. They have to be educated for that.

“Without that education and awareness, there will always be prostitutes coming in and going [out of Dolly].”

The future looks uncertain for Dolly. Opposing forces of industrialization and prostitution are locked in a game of tug o’ war to determine the area’s future. With the government not yet prepared to make major investments for the sake of the people, Dolly and its locals may well be the ones who lose out in the end.

Dolly, then, must take on a new purpose before it becomes nothing but a cautionary tale.

Indonesia threatens to block WhatsApp over sexual content

134553

Indonesian authorities say they will block access to the popular WhatsApp instant messaging app if it doesn't remove sexually explicit content.

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology said Tuesday on its website that it has already asked internet companies to block domain names used by Tenor, which provides animated image files known as GIFs through WhatsApp.

The government has sent three notices to WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook and widely used in Indonesia, asking it to remove pornographic content and will block the app if there's no response by Wednesday, ministry official Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan said at a news conference on Monday.

Indonesia blocked web versions of the messaging app Telegram in July because it included chat groups for Islamic State group supporters. It lifted the partial ban after Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov visited Indonesia in August and agreed on efforts to remove radical content.

Facebook's Asia spokeswoman Charlene Chian said that WhatsApp lets users search for GIFs using third-party providers and that WhatsApp can't monitor their content because communications on the app are encrypted.

"We've directed the Indonesia government to work with these third-party providers to review their content," she said.

Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, has strict anti-pornography laws and authorities are increasingly seeking to censor online content they deem to be offensive or a threat to national unity.

In addition to his proclaimed moral crusade against prostitution (starting with the closure of the infamous Alexis Hotel), recently inaugurated Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has also said he would take a hardline stance against drugs and would shut down any nightclubs where narcotics were found to be used.

Which is why he has decided to shut down Diamond, a nightclub (or as they’re still referred to by the local media, discotheque) in West Jakarta that was temporarily shut after a Golkar politician and two other men were found with crystal meth during a police raid pending the results of their investigation. Regulations give the government the right to shut down any establishment where narcotics have been found more than once and although police concluded the drugs came from outside the club, Anies decided to shut it down permanently anyways.

The new governor said it was essential to take a zero-tolerance approach against drugs because of the large and growing number of users in the capital.

“So it is estimated that more than 500,000 people are now drug users, 40% percent are employees, 20% are students, this is information from the head of the Jakarta branch of the National Narcotics Agency (BNNP DKI),” Anies said at City Hall today as quoted by Antara.

With the population of Metro Jakarta estimated to be about 10 million, that would mean the government believes around 1 in 20 people living in Jakarta is a drug user.

The new governor went on to say that the Chairman of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) mentioned that, in the last three years, the number of child drug traffickers increased by 300% and that the number of drug cases increased from 12,929 in 2014 to 17,300 in 2016.

The 500,000 user statistic from BNNP DKI comes from May of last year, but we could find no explanation for the agency’s methodology for coming up with that number. In the past, the government has been found to have used grossly unscientific surveys to estimate that 50 people per day are killed by drugs in Indonesia, a statistic often invoked by officials as a justification for the use of the death penalty for drug dealers.

Of course, the government’s attempts to increase public panic over narcotics with ever increasing numbers are at odds with their other stated justification for the death penalty, which is that it acts as a deterrent for future drug crimes.

... and tricking deer into drinking.

136696

It’s bad enough that animals in zoos don’t get to live in their natural habitats, but some animals in Indonesia’s famous Taman Safari zoo in Cisarua, West Java, had to put up with what appears to have been the drunken shenanigans of a few of the zoo’s visitors.

Yesterday, several videos that were originally posted by two Instagram accounts using the platform’s Stories feature were reuploaded by news aggregator account @ndorobeii. The videos show several instances of alleged animal abuse by a group of friends as they were driving through Taman Safari’s animal enclosures.

The first clip shows one man spitting what appears to be Orang Tua, a type of Indonesian red wine, from inside the car directly into the mouth of a hippo, resulting in the uncontrollable laughter of his friends in the car. The next two clips show the friends dangling a carrot to lure a deer to get close to their car before pouring the drink into the unsuspecting animal’s mouth, causing it to flee. They also seemingly tried to trick a zebra as well in the next clip, but whether they succeeded or not is not shown.

The clips inevitably caused outrage and went viral in Indonesia. Both Instagram accounts are inaccessible as of the time of writing, but one of them posted an apology asking the public’s forgiveness for her and her friends’ stupidity, as relayed by @ndorobeii

That said, Taman Safari says they are taking legal steps against the group for allegedly abusing their animals.

“TSI (Taman Safari Indonesia) is taking the legal step of reporting the incident to the relevant authorities and they are continuously coordinating with our legal department. We are disappointed, angered and struck by the stupid actions (of the people in the videos),” wrote Taman Safari Indonesia representative Yulius H. Suprihardo in a press release, as picked up by Kumparan today.

“On the one hand, Taman Safari Indonesia, as an ex-situ conservation body, has been working it’s hardest to take care of and preserve animals that were given to us by the state. On the other there are those who deliberately hurt the animals with disgraceful actions.”

Driver discipline and road safety is obviously a big problem in Indonesia, but just how bad is it? According to National Traffic Police Chief Royke Lumowa, road accidents are a serious epidemic that kills tens of thousands each year.

Based on data from the Traffic Police Corps, Royke said the death toll from traffic accidents reached about 30,000 thousand per year. That number, he added, is far greater than the combined number of deaths due to crime or acts of terrorism.

“Think of the approximately 28,000 to 30,000 people who die on the road per year because of accidents. Compared to terrorism and crime (the difference) is huge,” Royke said at the sidelines of the ASEAN Traffic Police Forum at Hotel Borobudur in Central Jakarta today as quoted by Detik.

Royke said the issue of traffic accidents didn’t often get major attention in Indonesia because they happened regularly but generally with a low number of casualties per incident. But put together, the number is staggering.

The national traffic police chief said that high-speed impacts were the main factor in fatal traffic accidents, and said that police needed to focus on better-enforcing traffic rules, especially speed limits.

Royke said Indonesia had a long way to be compared to countries like Singapore, which have low traffic fatality rates and are able to regulate traffic largely through the use of technology like speed cameras and electronic toll gates.

Indeed, based on 2013 data from the World Health Organization, Singapore had an accident rate of 3.6 people per 100,000, whereas Indonesia’s rate based on the new police figure would be about 11.5.

But at least Indonesia’s overall traffic fatality rate has dropped somewhat since that same 2013 WHO data showed that there were about 38,000 fatal accidents that year.

In 2014 and 2015, Human Rights Watch released disturbing reports on the Indonesian military and police’s use of “virginity testing” on female recruits, an abusive and anachronistic practice that has absolutely no scientific validity. The report sparked an outcry and widespread condemnation, but the police and military both stubbornly defended the practice, saying it was essential to determining the “morality” of their female recruits.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaBFLwD934U

A follow-up report by HRW released today, based on information from senior military and police officers, reveals that the practice of virginity testing is still being imposed on female recruits, although they are being euphemistically classified as “psychological” examinations for “mental health and morality reasons.” There have also been attempts to justify the “two-finger test” as a means of determining pregnancy status (which would also have no scientific basis).

“The Indonesian government’s continuing tolerance for abusive ‘virginity tests’ by the security forces reflects an appalling lack of political will to protect the rights of Indonesian women,” said Nisha Varia, women’s rights advocacy director at HRW. “These tests are degrading and discriminatory, and they harm women’s equal access to important job opportunities.”

In November 2014, the World Health Organization issued guidelines that stated, “There is no place for virginity (or ‘two-finger’) testing; it has no scientific validity.” HRW and other human rights organizations consider the test, meant to determine whether the recruits’ hymens are still intact, is cruel, invasive and a form of gender-based violence.

So why hasn’t the government done anything to end it? An Indonesian military doctor told HRW that senior military personnel were well-aware of the arguments against the practice but were unwilling to abolish it without the support of their superiors, with the doctor suggesting it might take a direct order by Indonesian military commander Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo to end to the practice.

However, it seems unlikely that the military will end the practice internally. All branches of the armed forces have been using “virginity testing” for decades and, in some circumstances, even the fiancés of military officers have been required to take them. Military officials strongly defended the practice when it came under fire after HRW’s original reports.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMgMIAha7-M

The top Indonesian military commander at the time, General Moeldoko, brushed off the criticism, saying that virginity testing was essential to assessing the morality of female recruits. “Yes, that is one of the conditions. So what is the problem?” he told reporters as quoted by Tempo. “It is for a good reason, so why should it be criticized?”

An Indonesian military spokesman Major General Fuad Basya, also told reporters in 2015 that virginity tests were necessary so that soldiers had the right mentality. “You can imagine, if later a prostitute became a soldier, what would happen to Indonesia’s military,” he told BBC Indonesia.

Those misguided and misogynistic views are unfortunately not limited to the police or military. Just this year, a famous Indonesian judge named Binsar Gultom stirred controversy with a book in which he argued that virginity testing for women was necessary to preserve the “purity of marriage”.

With change unlikely to come from within the military or police for, HRW has advised President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to order top police and military commanders to immediately ban “virginity tests”, especially in light of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25.

“Indonesian women who seek to serve their country by joining the security forces shouldn’t have to subject themselves to an abusive and discriminatory ‘virginity test’ to do so,” HRW’s Varia said. “The Indonesian police and military cannot effectively protect all Indonesians, women and men, so long as a mindset of discrimination permeates their ranks.”

Bali’s international airport will reopen Wednesday afternoon after a nearly three-day shutdown, Indonesian airport authorities said, as ash from an erupting volcano on the island paradise shifted direction.

The eagerly awaited decision opens up a window of hope for some of more than 120,000 tourists stranded after a spike in activity at Mount Agung grounded hundreds of flights since Monday.

But airport officials cautioned that the only direct international gateway to the tropical island could be shuttered again if winds change direction and towering columns of smoke and ash pose a risk to flights.

“The airspace will be re-opened” at 3:00 pm local time (0700 GMT), Bali Ngurah Rai airport spokesman Arie Ahsanurrohim told AFP.

But “we are going to constantly monitor the situation on the ground,” he added.

Ash is dangerous for planes as it makes runways slippery and can be sucked into their engines.

Mount Agung could produce a major eruption at any moment, officials have warned.

Tens of thousands have already fled their homes around the volcano — which last erupted in 1963, killing around 1,600 people — but as many as 100,000 will likely be forced to leave, disaster agency officials have said.

Experts said Agung’s recent activity matches the build-up to the earlier disaster, which ejected enough debris — about a billion tons — to lower global average temperatures by around 0.3 degrees Celsius for roughly a year.

“Small eruptions have been happening continuously but there’s still the possibility of a bigger, explosive eruption,” said I Gede Suantika, a senior volcanologist at Indonesia’s volcanology agency.

“Activity remains high and we are still on the highest alert level.”

Roadside signs that read “Volcanic danger zone. No entry!” underscored the potential risks of staying behind.

There is a 10 kilometer exclusion zone around Agung, which is 75 kilometres away from the beachside tourist hub of Kuta.

As of Wednesday around 440 flights had been cancelled since the start of the week.

The airport on nearby Lombok island — also a popular tourist destination — has opened and closed several times in the past few days. It is currently open.

‘Ring of Fire’

Some 100 buses are hauling visitors to several destinations including Indonesia’s second-biggest city Surabaya — 13 hours’ drive and a ferry ride away — and the capital Jakarta, the airport said, as torrential rain lashed the beach paradise.

The majority of Bali’s tourists are Chinese, followed by Australians, Indians, British visitors and Japanese, according to the immigration office, which added that nearly 25,000 foreigners live on the small, Hindu-dominated island.

Foreigners whose visitor visas are expiring will be given a special permit to stay longer due to the eruption, the agency added.

Agung rumbled back to life in September, forcing the evacuation of 140,000 people living nearby. Its activity decreased in late October and many returned to their homes.

However, on Saturday the mountain sent smoke up into the air for the second time in a week in what volcanologists call a phreatic eruption — caused by the heating and expansion of groundwater.

So-called cold lava flows have also appeared — similar to mud flows and often a prelude to the blazing orange lava of popular imagination.

Indonesia, the world’s most active volcanic region, lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent volcanic and seismic activities.

Last year, seven people were killed after Mt. Sinabung on the western island of Sumatra erupted. A 2014 eruption at Sinabung killed 16.

Cancelled flights, missed connections and expiring visas have turned Bali into a nightmare for thousands of tourists scrambling to leave, as a volcano on the Indonesian vacation paradise threatens a major eruption.

Hundreds of flights have been grounded as the main international airport was shuttered for a second day on Tuesday, leaving 120,000 stranded visitors in need of shelter — or an exit plan.

Hundreds joined the mad rush to board buses headed to an international airport in Indonesia’s second-biggest city Surabaya — 13 hours’ drive and a ferry ride away — as torrential rains dampened spirits even more in one the world’s top tourist draws.

An imminent major eruption of Mount Agung may mean more five-star hotel living for some well-heeled visitors who are happy to sit out the minor inconvenience, but Mukesh Kumar Gupta and two-dozen members of his family aren’t going to be staying at the Four Seasons.

“We are practically helpless — how can we get back to India?” said the Chennai-based member of the heaving 26-member clan.

Gupta’s family — 23 adults and three kids — arrived in Bali 10 days ago from different Indian cities.

They were all supposed to fly back Tuesday but now they say they are stuck, and nearly broke, as chaos ensued at the airport with frustrated travellers and overwhelmed staff.

“The refund money (from the airline) won’t be enough to buy us new tickets,” another family member, Navin Saraf from Kolkata, told AFP at Bali’s main airport.

“We booked everything online beforehand, so we don’t have much cash right now,” he added.

Towering columns of thick grey smoke have been rising from Agung since last week, and in the last few days the volcano has begun shooting smoke and ash into the sky, forcing all flights to be grounded until at least Wednesday morning.

Ash is dangerous for planes as it makes runways slippery and can be sucked into their engines.

‘Nobody’s fault’

Agung is 75 kilometers (47 miles) from the beach-and-sandal tourist hub of Kuta, but that wasn’t making German student Alex Thamm feel much better.

“We are supposed to go back to Germany via Singapore on (Friday) but the situation seems not good,” he said nervously.

“Is it dangerous here? Do you think [the volcano] will explode?”

The delays weren’t putting a smile on Juan Gajun’s face either, after he missed a connecting flight Monday.

“We have to leave the island and we can’t. We were planning to go to Singapore but we have to stay here for I don’t know, maybe two or three days more,” said the 30-year-old Argentine.

Colin Cavy, a French dive master who has been in Indonesia for a couple of months, had other problems.

“I’ve just come to Bali two days ago to leave the country,” he told AFP.

“My visa has expired…I need to go to the immigration office.”

Meanwhile, cash-strapped Gupta and his bulging brood were weighing their options, which he lamented would not include help from India’s consulate in Bali.

“No one can beat nature, but at least people can help,” said Gupta’s relative Abhisek Garg, who lives in Delhi.

They might want to call inn operator I Wayan Yastina Joni, who is among the few hoteliers willing to take up an appeal by Bali’s governor and tourism agency to supply free rooms to out-of-luck visitors.

“I don’t mind giving free accommodation for tourists I already know,” said the owner of the Pondok Denayu Homestay.

“This is nobody’s fault. It’s a natural disaster that no one expected.”

Hundreds of fish and eels were spotted coming down Bali’s Unda River on Tuesday, downstream of the island’s smoking Mount Agung volcano.

The volcano has been belching thick gray clouds of since last week and in the last few days has been shooting up plumes of ash into the sky, leading to the volcano getting upgraded to the highest alert status since Monday.

Photos posted to Facebook by Ary Kencana show residents holding up various types of fish and eels on Tuesday in the muddied Unda River in Bali’s Klungkung regency, which is south of Karangasem where the volcano is.

The fish were “already dead” and “killed because of nature,” wrote Kencana, who added that hundreds of people had come to the Unda around 9am to take the fish.

“Because the water from the river mixed with mud and volcanic ash,” she wrote.

After her photos went viral with over three thousand shares, Kencana did a follow-up post, urging netizens to contact the relevant local agencies to try and find a solution to save all the dying fish.

Local residents have been warned by Indonesia’s Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) to stay away from river channels as lahars—destructive flows of ash, mud, and other debris—begin to flow down.

“People around Mount Agung should be alert against the threat of cold lava floods. If it starts to rain upstream, immediately get out of the water,” cautions BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

“The rain is going to increase. Do not do activities around the river. In a radius of eight to 10 kilometers, must be empty from activity. People in this radius are in danger and must evacuate. Do not even watch the eruption near Mount Agung,” Nugroho said, as quoted by Tribun Bali.

Additionally, the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) has instructed residents to specifically beware of the Yeh Sah and Unda Rivers.

“The chemical threat of lahars is minimal, but the physical threat is much greater. So, it’s better not to do any activities around the river and to be especially alert if passing over the bridge,” said PVMBG head, Gede Suantika.

But seeing all the fish coming down, residents outside of the exclusion zone have not totally heeded the warning of staying away from the river. Residents came carrying nets to capture fish and eels that had allegedly died due to sulfur poisoning in the river—which did reportedly have a “stinging odor of sulfur.”

“The night before, the cold lava was flowing quite swiftly. People panicked and were worried, but until now the lahar is still flowing and so it’s become a spectacle,” said local resident, Ni Ketut Sari.

A resident of Selat, Karangasem, Wayan Putra said that the lahars are getting bigger due to heavy rainfall.

“In Selat, there are many villages affected by lahars.

“Residents are worried about their crops and livestock,” he added.

Yesterday, The Guardian published an exclusive report detailing the results of a major scientific study on the high prevalence of microplastics in tap water throughout the world. Defined as tiny plastic fibers that can range from less to 5 mm down to just nanometers in length, the study warns that microplastics can harbor potentially dangerous chemicals or pathogens and are so small they could theoretically penetrate cells and organs.

139280

According to the study’s findings, microplastics were found in 76.2% of tap water in Jakarta and an average of 1.9 fibers found per 500ml.

By comparison, the country with the highest percentage was the US with 94.4% and an average of 4.8 fibers per 500ml. Almost all countries surveyed showed fairly high levels of microplastic contamination, with all of the European countries averaging the lowest with 72.2% tap water contamination. Overall, 83% of all the water samples they tested included microplastics.

In Indonesia, samples were drawn from the taps of homes in five parts of the Greater Jakarta region: Bogor, Depok, South Tangerang and Bekasi.

The problem is somewhat mitigated due to the fact that most people in Jakarta don’t drink tap water but instead rely on purified water gallons. However, the study also noted that even samples taken from water bottles in several countries still showed microplastic contamination.

As alarming as the study is, the real risks of microplastic contamination on humans have not been thoroughly investigated, but they have been significantly detrimental to certain animals especially sea life.

Indonesian man named ‘Polisi’ given job at police station after getting ticketed for traffic violation

141807

If you read news about Indonesia from foreign media outlets, you’ve probably come across the disclaimer, “who, like many Indonesians, go by one name” when referring to surname-less citizens. Well, one Indonesian man’s uniquely singular name and equally unusual story has earned him viral fame and even landed him a job that many would say he was destined for since birth.

On November 6, a 22-year-old man from Pasuruan, East Java, was ticketed at a traffic police checkpoint because he was riding his motorcycle without a license. Long story short, a photo showing the ticket and the man’s ID card went viral on social media because it said that the man’s legal name is Polisi (which literally translates to “police”).

Instead of being punished, Polisi quickly became something of a celebrity mascot for the police due to his newfound fame. First, the police issued Polisi a motorcycle license for free (he said he had not been able to afford getting one previously) and then they went on to give their namesake a chance to improve his life in the long term.

141808

Polisi is starting his new job today as an assistant at the Pasuruan Traffic Police Department. The shy man was introduced today in front of all the staff and officers at the department during morning assembly, and he admitted that he was very nervous about his first day.

“I don’t yet understand the workflow here. But I will put in the effort as quickly as possible to adapt. I promise I will try as best as I can,” Polisi said today, as quoted by Tribun.

Pasuruan Traffic Police Department head Erika Purnawa Putra said their employment of Polisi is one way for them to carry out their duty to protect and nurture the public.

“This is a part of our responsibility. We are very happy to be able to help Polisi. Rest assured, we will help Polisi to adapt quickly,” he said.

Before today, Polisi was a construction worker. After his father passed away, Polisi became the breadwinner for his mother and younger sibling.

When asked why he was given the name Polisi, his mother said the name was his father’s idea and there was no particular reason for it.

Of course, Polisi isn’t the only Indonesian to have found viral fame due to their extraordinary names.

Police raid finds liquid meth factory inside West Jakarta nightclub, 120 arrested after testing positive

https://img2.uploadhouse.com/fileuploads/25677/25677812364ff5f967191194e92110b70f1100d9.jpg

While drug raids on shady nightclubs in North and West Jakarta happen fairly regularly, a raid on the MG International Nightclub by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) revealed much more than clubbers testing positive for drugs or even sellers attempting to move vast quantities of illicit product.

In addition to arresting 120 people for testing positive for drug use at the “discotheque” (as nightclubs are still referred to in the Indonesian media) located on Jalan Tubagus Angke in West Jakarta, officers of the narcotics agency also uncovered an entire laboratory on the fourth floor of the building they say was being used to produce methamphetamines. And they say it had been producing drugs on the premises for years.

“From our initial inspection, this discotheque has produced (narcotics) for 2 years,” said Jakarta BNN chief Johny Pol Latupeirissa on Sunday as quoted in a police press release.

Johny said the factory produced a form of liquid methamphetamine sold in plastic water bottles. They said that, in addition to those arrested after testing positive for narcotics, they had also arrested several people suspected of being involved in their production.

“Equipment and materials are large enough that we would classify as a factory used to produce drugs of various kinds,” said BNN prosecutor Anjan Pramuka Putra.

A regional regulation on tourism gives the Jakarta Government the power to unilaterally shot down nightlife venues if narcotics have been found there on more than one occasion. This actually marks the first time that drugs have been found during a raid on MG International (despite long being notorious hotspot for narcotics) but due to a production facility being found on site the government is pushing for its immediate closure and the prosecution of its owners and management.

“So we are firm, it will not just be closed but its permit will be immediately revoked and (its owners and management) immediately processed on criminal charges,” Vice Governor Sandiaga Uno said today as quoted by Tribun.

Many Indonesian politicians and officials have declared that the country is in the midst of a drug emergency. Police have estimated there are around 1.2 million drug users in Jakarta.

Human rights activists have warned that the government’s increasingly hardline rhetoric towards drug criminals has led to an increase in police shootings this year.

Tourism Minister Arief Yahya has announced that in an effort to boost tourist arrivals during the year-end holiday season, discounts of up to 50 percent would be offered to tourists visiting Bali.

“Discounts of between 40 to 50 percent will be offered,” Arief said in Denpasar on Monday after attending a meeting with Bali tourism stakeholders.

The discount policy is part of an effort to boost tourist arrivals to Bali, particularly during the New Year's Eye festivities, after foreign and domestic tourists have shown reluctance to visit the resort island in light of the volcanic activity of Mount Agung.

The discounts would be given to both domestic and foreign tourists, said Arief, adding that the government allocated Rp 100 billion (US$7 million) to intensify the promotion of the Bali tourism industry.

This year, the government targeted 6 million foreign tourist arrivals to Bali, however Arief projected that figure would only reach 5.5 million because of the ongoing volcanic activity.

He said the number of tourist arrivals had reached 5 million as of October.

Next year, he added, the government targeted 7 million foreign tourist arrivals to Bali.

Instead of being punished, Polisi quickly became something of a celebrity mascot for the police due to his newfound fame. First, the police issued Polisi a motorcycle license for free (he said he had not been able to afford getting one previously) and then they went on to give their namesake a chance to improve his life in the long term.

Polisi is starting his new job today as an assistant at the Pasuruan Traffic Police Department. The shy man was introduced today in front of all the staff and officers at the department during morning assembly, and he admitted that he was very nervous about his first day.

While the government’s bribery eradication drive has been highly publicized in recent years, few Indonesians would be surprised if a traffic police officer still asked them for a bribe in lieu of a fine for committing a traffic violation.

One such incident was caught in a video that has since gone viral over the past week. Recorded in mid-November in Semarang, Central Java, the discreetly taken video shows a traffic police officer bringing a couple of motorcyclists over to a police car so that he can write them tickets.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oJhmKx1ML0

The officer then explains to one motorcyclist that he will be fined IDR1.5 million (US$110.50) for carrying an expired driver’s license (the actual fine for not carrying a valid license, according to Laws on Traffic and Road Vehicles, is IDR1 million). He then tells them that he would accept a payment amounting to half of the fine and then he wouldn’t have to write up the ticket.

After some negotiating, the cop can be seen receiving several IDR100,000 notes from the offender.

A spokesperson for the Central Java Police apologized for the bribery solicitation shown in the video and said that the officer, identified by his initial A, is currently being investigated internally and may be sent to jail.

“We’re trying to fix all aspects (of the force) but there are still those who are playing around like that,” said Central Java Traffic Police Director Baharuddin, as quoted by Liputan 6 yesterday.

Of course, bad apples like officer A do not represent every police officer in Indonesia. That said, the reputation of Indonesian police as a whole would be a lot better if there were more people like officer Seladi from Malang, who won the nation’s hearts by choosing to scavenge trash as a side job rather than accept bribes.

Over the past week, two disturbing videos allegedly showing statutory rape by an adult woman on two elementary school boys went viral on social media in Indonesia, prompting a widely publicized investigation by the police.

According to media reports, one of the videos shows the woman having sex with an underage boy, while the other shows her having sex with the same boy as well as another boy.

Sundanese — the native language for the majority of West Javans — was spoken in both videos, prompting the West Java Police to take the lead in the investigation. Today, they announced their initial findings of their investigation of the videos, which they believe were taken just a couple of months ago in the West Java capital city of Bandung.

“We predict (they were shot) in November. Certainly (the videos) were not made in December,” said West Java Police Chief Inspector General Agung Budi Maryoto, as quoted by Detik today.

The identities of the people in the videos have not yet been identified, but the police have located the two hotels in which the videos were shot and have questioned their employees.

“Usually people checking in (to hotels) leave their KTP IDs. We will look into it,” Agung said.

Though there have been no arrests so far, it’s likely that the woman, or any other adults who may have been involved in the production of the videos, would be charged with sexual abuse of minors under Indonesia’s child protection laws, which is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. They could also possibly be charged with as violation of Indonesia’s strict anti-pornography laws.

The police have not identified who originally posted the videos online. We hope nobody would download or continue sharing the videos on moral grounds, but if anybody needs convincing, the IT Ministry reminded the public that the simple act of sharing the videos online is a violation of the Information and Electronic Transactions Act (UU ITE) and is punishable by up to four years’ imprisonment.

Sometimes life lessons can come from the unlikeliest of sources, such as this one from an adorably conscientious 6-year-old in Indonesia.

Recently, a couple of photos went viral online showing a handwritten apology note (photo above) written by the polite young boy after he had scraped his bike against a parked car, resulting in a pretty long scratch.

“I’m sorry, sir,” the kid wrote. “I scratched your car when I fell off my bike. This is my mother’s mobile phone number,” he continued while writing down the number and signing his name, Zhafran, at the bottom of the note.

Kumparan actually called the number in the note and reached Zhafran’s mother, Condri. According to Condri, her son came home one afternoon crying as he looked overcome with guilt.

“He suddenly cried and apologized, it turned out that he fell off his bike and it scratched a parked car. I didn’t know how bad the scratch was, I thought he might have dented the car,” Condri said, as quoted by Kumparan today.

She then told Zhafran to return to the car and wait for the owner to return so could can apologize to him directly. After waiting for a long time, Codri then told Zhafran to write the note, which she photographed after he put it up on the windshield.

“I only suggested it to him, he wrote it himself with earnestness,” she said.

However, Codri said the car’s owner has so far not contacted her about seeking money to repair the minor damage.

“I am happy that Zhafran was cooperative and has a sense of responsibility. Hopefully Zhafran will always remember that if we make a mistake, we have to be brave to apologize and take responsibility for our mistakes,” she said.

Zhafran for president 50 years from now?

US Secretary of Defense James Mattis was in Indonesia for a three-day visit that ended today. Besides the high-level talks on regional defense strategy with the Indonesian government, by far the highlight of his trip was an bonkers demonstration done by the Indonesian military in his honor.

While it’s customary for Pentagon chiefs to be shown military demonstrations during foreign visits, our soldiers upped the ante by several degrees of insanity. At Indonesian Military (TNI) headquarters in Central Jakarta today, Mattis was treated to a showcase of a rather unique set of skills Indonesian troops were trained in.

The demonstrations included men rolling in glass, walking on fire, and breaking stacks of bricks using their heads. There was also a blindfolded soldier tasked with shooting a balloon held between the legs of one of his colleagues, which miraculously didn’t cause any injuries despite at least one shot missing.

Perhaps the most insane segment of the show for Mattis was this snake killing demonstration. In this video uploaded by USNews National Security Correspondent Paul D. Shinkman, you can see about a dozen Indonesian special forces soldiers handling king cobras before killing them — with at least two of the troopers ripping apart the poor, innocent snakes with their teeth.

And, for no reason we can fathom, except perhaps for an over-the-top show of deranged manliness, the snake-killing soldiers fed each other the serpents’ blood.

On the snake killing demonstration, Mattis praised the Indonesian soldiers’ cold-blooded and expert handling of the reptiles, telling Reuters, “The snakes! Did you see them tire them out and then grab them? The way they were whipping them around – a snake gets tired very quickly.”

Mattis leaves Indonesia today to continue his tour to Vietnam.

Many Indonesian troops are trained in wildlife survival, and killing snakes is seen as a necessary skill for have for those who have to be deployed into jungles. In 2016, in a joint military training operation, Indonesia’s Marines taught US Army soldiers how to kill venomous snakes like the king cobra and cook large snakes like a python for sustenance, demonstrations of which were filmed.

Popular Singapore-based roti (bread) chain BreadTalk has become the talk of the town following a rodent scandal.

Recently, a video went viral on social media in which two rats can be seen navigating around the kitchen of a BreadTalk chain at a mall in the city of Yogyakarta, Central Java. People off frame in the video can be heard expressing their disgust, saying, “ihhh tikus!” (Eeek, rats!) throughout the short clip.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMt8TIOxdiQ

“The incident occurred at 11 pm when our store was closed and we can assure that there were no products on our display. We have followed this up by cleaning all the tools required to make bread, disinfecting them and storing all the ingredients safely and securely to sustain the quality of our products,” they wrote.

“We hope that in the future our team can serve you better and that this kind of thing won’t happen again.”

Interestingly, despite the negative press, many commenters came to the bakery’s defense by saying that the fault is not entirely theirs.

“Even if BreadTalk is sparkling clean as clean as the hearts and houses of [judgmental] netizens, if there are rats in the mall then it would be difficult to keep them under control,” wrote one user in the comments section.

BreadTalk has remained one of the most popular bread chains in Indonesia despite being suspected of many for being unsuitable for Muslims as they did not renew their Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) halal certification in 2015 (though they claim their products are halal).

Woman in hijab cleaning next to decapitated statue of Jesus after church attack embodies Indonesia’s ‘Unity in Diversity’ motto

154374

Yesterday’s attack on a church in Yogyakarta province once again raised concerns about the rise of religious intolerance in Indonesia, but one woman’s response to the attack speaks volumes for Indonesia’s “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” (Unity in Diversity) national motto and as a reminder that the actions of an extreme few do not represent the tolerant majority.

A photo that has gone viral on social media today shows a woman wearing a hijab sweeping the floor below a decapitated statue of Jesus in St. Lidwina Bedog Church in the town of Sleman. The church was the scene of a horrific attack yesterday morning, during which a sword-wielding man barged in during Sunday Mass, attacking and seriously wounding four people and destroying books and statues.

154375

According to the post above, which was shared on local community page Info Cegatan Jogja, the woman was one of several residents of the area who volunteered to clean up the church following the attack regardless of their religious faiths. Her identity is still unknown.

While she may be nameless for the time being, the woman is being touted by many as representing the true face of Indonesia.

“Our blood is red. Our bones are white. We are all one from Sabang to Merauke,” wrote one commenter in the post above.

“Thank you ma’am. The above photo can open the eyes of all Yogyakartans, Indonesians, and even citizens of the world that the people of Yogya cannot be pitted against one another,” wrote another.

The attacker, who has been identified as a university student in his 20s, is reportedly in critical condition after he was shot by police while resisting arrest at the church yesterday. The police have yet to classify the attack as an act of terrorism.

While majority Muslim, Indonesia is home to significant numbers of Christians, Hindus, and Buddhists.

In 2016, several children were injured after a man threw Molotov cocktails at a church during a Sunday service.

On Christmas Eve 2000, the Al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah group staged coordinated bombings of churches in Jakarta and eight other cities that killed 18 people and injured many more. One of Indonesia’s greatest heroes for tolerance, a Muslim youth named Riyanto, was among the people killed when he sacrificed himself to save a church filled with people who followed a different faith to his own.

In Indonesia, there are at least two people who have claimed that they can lay eggs through their anus. One was an old man, who was soon established by medical professionals to be, figuratively and literally, full of shit. The other is a teenage boy, whose case continues to confound doctors today.

In 2015, Akmal, now 14, from the Gowa regency of South Sulawesi, made headlines after he claimed that he laid seven eggs in a week. Back then, medical experts were baffled to see the existence of an object similar in shape and size to a chicken egg nesting in his rectum, and no explanation for the eggs-traordinary claim was given.

Now, almost three years later, Akmal is back in hospital claiming that he has laid 20 more eggs since.

“In two years he laid 18 eggs and 2 today, so in total there have been 20. I cracked the first egg and its content was all yellow, no white. A month later I cracked another one, and its content was all white and no yellow,” said Rusli, Akmal’s father, to reporters yesterday, as quoted by Detik.

The last two eggs were taken out at Syekh Yusuf Hospital in Gowa, where doctors don’t seem to be buying into the egg-laying claim this time.

“Our suspicion is that the eggs were deliberately shoved [into Akmal’s rectum]. But we did not see it directly,” said Muhammad Taslim, spokesman for the hospital, as quoted by Detik yesterday.

“Scientifically [chicken] eggs cannot form inside the human body. It’s impossible, especially in the digestive system.”

Taslim said the hospital is putting Akmal into quarantine for a week, during which time it would be unlikely for the teenager to shove eggs up his rectum.

“Two years ago we asked for the eggs to be checked out, but I don’t know the final results. I believe that they were determined to be chicken eggs,” Taslim said.

Could Akmal or his family have lied and concocted this cuckoo story?

“He never swallowed eggs whole, why would he do that?” Rusli said.

“I am an imam (cleric) in my village, so there’s no voodoo. I only believe in the Lord.”

Indonesian woman bites traffic cop’s hand after protesting ticket for not wearing a helmet

http://polyfedelicio.us/imgs/images/2018/03/02/a1.jpg

“The power of emak-emak” is a phrase used jokingly in Indonesia to refer to the power of mothers, or more generally any strong-willed middle-aged ladies, who just don’t give a shit and won’t put up with any shit either. As this viral post seems to show, there is no upper limit on an emak’s ability to not give a shit.

Recently, a Facebook post went hugely viral (more than 170,000 shares at the time of writing) that illustrates the ultimate power of emak-emak, though it was an exercise in defiance that might land a middle-aged woman in trouble with the law since she was filmed physically assaulting a police officer.

In the first video, the woman is absolutely livid that she was stopped by a traffic police officer for not wearing a helmet. She takes out several bank notes from her purse, purportedly worth IDR1 million (US$73), and then tells the cop to buy her a helmet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLlg3K2jNwA

The woman’s uninhibited anger continues into the next video, in which she channels her inner feral drive by biting the officer’s hand. We can’t help but find this part to be absolutely hilarious, especially because of the cop’s calmness (he even smiled awkwardly at one point) while having a random middle-aged woman bite down on his hand, leaving a couple of marks:

http://polyfedelicio.us/imgs/images/2018/03/02/a27aeb9.jpg

Authorities later confirmed that the incident took place on Thursday morning in Kudus regency, Central Java, with the officer in the videos identified as Erlangga Hananda Seto.

“When the lady was driving [her motorcycle], our officer stopped her because she wasn’t wearing a helmet. When she was asked to show her documents, it turned out she didn’t have a license and registration, and the one (vehicle registration) she had with her did not match the vehicle,” said Kudus Traffic Police Head Eko Rubiyanto, as quoted by Kompas.

“And then our officer was bitten in his right hand, which left some marks. We have secured the woman and confiscated her vehicle. The officer who was bitten filed a report with forensic evidence (of the bite).”

The Kudus Police reportedly still have the woman in custody, though charges against her haven’t been announced.

Police arrest father who allegedly put lit cigarette in 9-month-old’s mouth while mother took photo

http://polyfedelicio.us/imgs/images/2018/03/02/a15b031.jpg

Indonesia unfortunately has another “smoking baby” making headlines, but at least this latest incident has led to the arrest of the person allegedly responsible for putting a cigarette in the infant’s mouth: his own father.

Recently, a photo went viral showing a baby with a lit cigarette in his mouth, with the arm of an adult holding him up. The photo was first posted on one of the parent’s Facebook pages, which then led to the police identifying the baby as a 9-month-old, identified by his the initials AI, who is the the child of 36-year-old M and his wife, 18-year-old U from a village in Bangkalan regency, East Java.

The local police have arrested M, who admitted that he was smoking in the room when he decided to put the lit cigarette in his infant son’s mouth and have the photo taken.

“We have secured the father for putting the cigarette in the infant’s mouth, even if the baby is his own child,” said Bangkalan Police Spokesman Bidarudin, as quoted by Tribun yesterday.

What’s more astounding is that, according to the police, the father actually did put some thought into safety while exposing his child to the noxious carcinogenic smoke.

“The child had the lit cigarette in his mouth. The culprit sat the child up, and he also held the child up by the arms because he was worried that [the baby] would get burned by cigarette ash,” Bidarudin said.

Police said AI’s mother was aware of the incident, given that she was the one who took the photo. However, the police have not arrested her for reasons not yet known.

Under Indonesian law, there is no specific punishment for giving cigarettes to children, but M could be charged with violating the Child Protection Act and face up to 6 months’ imprisonment under the law.

Indonesia is unfortunately known for having some of the highest smoking rates in the world, with government statistics showing that nearly one-third of the population are active tobacco users, which includes an alarmingly high number of child smokers. Aldi Rizal, the infamous smoking baby of Indonesia who was known to smoke as many as 40 cigarettes a day at the age of 2, became the poster child for the problem of child smokers in Indonesia back in 2010 (he has since supposedly kicked the habit). Amidst the international outcry and embarrassment over his case, the government promised to pass more measures to stop children from getting addicted to tobacco.

But it is clear that lawmakers still aren’t doing nearly enough to prevent young people from picking up the deadly habit, as their own latest statistics show that the number of smokers under 18 in Indonesia rose in 2016 to 8.8%, up from 7.2% in 2014.

Man confesses to killing employer, cutting off his penis and then eating it to prevent victim’s spirit from haunting him

https://img6.uploadhouse.com/fileuploads/25819/258194168c63d77942536a9b977c68c7a73ce872.jpg

One of the most shocking stories we’ve ever written about was the bizarre case of a man who murdered another man and ate his penis back in 2015. We certainly thought we’d write about something like that ever again and yet, here we are just over two years later with another case of penile cannibalism in Indonesia.

Police in the Batanghari Regency of Sumatra’s Jambi Province said that on December 7, a 54-year-old man identified as Terusman, as well as his 16-year-old son, identified by his initials RD, murdered M Dasrullah, a palm oil plantation owner who employed the suspects.

Based on Terusman’s confession to the police, he whacked Dasrullah repeatedly with a machete while the victim was asleep in a hut, killing him. With the help of his son RD, they took Dasrullah’s body to bury it, but not before Terusman mutilated the victim’s penis.

“After I cut him, I buried him. I took his ‘vital tool’ back to the hut,” Terusman said, as quoted by Tribun.

He then boiled the penis and sprinkled in some spices from the kitchen. He apparently had a reason for eating his victim’s manhood, though not one that makes any sense.

“I boiled [the penis] before I eventually ate it myself, so that the victim’s spirit wouldn’t haunt me,” he said.

https://img0.uploadhouse.com/fileuploads/25819/258194203b25304349254b8774eacb67cee2ec24.jpg

The police said that Terusman and RD were arrested at two different locations several days after the murder and after they had split up. Terusman has reportedly shown no remorse over his actions, and admitted that he and his son had plotted to kill Dasrullah for over a week as the victim had allegedly withheld their salaries for the three years that they had worked for him, which amounted to IDR20 million (US$1,474).

Both have been charged with premeditated murder, with Terusman facing life imprisonment and possibly the death penalty while RD could face lighter penalties due to his status as a minor. The regency’s public prosecutor is reportedly ready to take the suspects to trial in the coming weeks.

Back in October 2015, in the neighboring province of Lampung, a man named Rudi Efendi killed another man whom he had accused of raping his wife. Similar to what Terusman did, Rudi mutilated his victim’s penis, fried it, and then ate it to heal his heartache towards the victim.

2 elementary school boys, each standing on one pedal, ride a bike in Indonesia

http://desipic.site/images/2018/04/06/a1.png

While most kids their age would be fighting over who gets to ride the bike, these two young boys in Indonesia showed what it means to truly collaborate by reinventing tandem biking (and inadvertently getting a taste of viral fame).

This video, posted over the weekend, shows two boys wearing elementary school uniforms each standing on one pedal, see-sawing back and forth as they delicately balance the bicycle. They were filmed by a seemingly friendly man on a motorcycle (we do not condone the fact that he was using his phone while driving) who was clearly amused by what he saw as he encouraged them throughout the video.

https://twitter.com/_fransiskancis/status/977475778924302336

The boys seem like they have been riding together for a long time, looking perfectly in sync as they expertly maneuver around pot holes and make tight turns with ease. As a result, commenters were quick to draw parallels to the “Pacific Rim” movies, which feature giant robots piloted by two humans working in sync.

Kid without driver’s license pees himself when police pull him over, cops post pic on Instagram as warning

http://desipic.site/images/2018/04/06/a1.jpg

It’s hard to imagine a scenario more humiliating than being caught by the police while riding a motorcycle without a license and promptly peeing on yourself out of fear.

One of the few ways it could get worse would be if the cops were to take a picture of you and your soiled pants and then upload it to social media as a warning to others.

That is exactly what happened to this Indonesian youngster, whose urine-soaked pants now adorn the official Instagram account of the Bandung Police (who were, at least, considerate enough to cover the boy’s face to save him from ultimate humiliation).

The caption to the photo reads:

Caught breaking the law, this school kid peed in his pants.

When the officer stopped this high school student that was driving a motorcycle on the road, instantly the kid peed in the pants, either because he really had to pee or because he was really afraid of getting a ticket.

.For younger brothers and sisters who do not yet have a driver’s license, do not bring a vehicle to school, it is better to ride an angkot (public transport minibus) if your parents can’t give you a ride..

Stop violations stop accidents save humanity

While it was obviously wrong of the student to drive a motorcycle without a driver’s license, it also seems pretty messed up that the police took a humiliating photo of an officer pointing at the kid’s pee pants and then uploaded it to social media.

But, on the other hand, they did hide the student’s face. And perhaps his humiliation will serve as a warning to the multitude of other kids driving out there without licenses.

Underage driving is a huge problem here in Indonesia with far too many children driving themselves and others to school illegally on motorcycles each and every day while police generally look the other way. But even when they do stop underage motorists, there’s not much they can do to punish them since the law law is limited in how it can punish juvenile crimes (this is perhaps best illustrated by the case of popstar-turned-politician Ahmad Dhani’s son, who illegally drove a car when he was just 13 and killed 7 people in a horrific accident but went completely unpunished, as did his father who gave him the sports car he was driving).

Two years ago, a woman started an online petition to jail parents who let their underage children drive, after a kid on a motorcycle killed a 3-year-old boy in an accident. Though the petition has garnered a great deal of support, no such law has been passed.

Eight Taiwanese drug smugglers were sentenced to death by an Indonesian court Thursday after being nabbed with around a ton of crystal methamphetamine in a country that has some of the world’s toughest anti-drug laws.

The men were arrested during raids last July, when the drug network’s suspected leader was killed in a shootout with Indonesian police.

“The defendants have been found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of colluding and smuggling narcotics,” presiding judge Haruno Patriadi said as he passed sentence at the South Jakarta District Court.

https://kannacloud.com/images/2018/04/28/a239d359a1326c0445.jpg

Tipped off by their Taiwanese counterparts, Indonesian police said they discovered some 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) of crystal meth — shipped by boat from China — packed inside about 50 boxes. The haul was reportedly worth some $144 million.

Some of the suspects were arrested at a beach where the drugs were delivered some 125 kilometers (77 miles) west of Jakarta, while others were apprehended in the suspected drug boat near Singaporean waters.

The sentence passed on the men — Liao Guan-Yu, Chen Wei-Cyuan, Hsu Yung-Li, Juang Jin Sheng, Sun Kuo Tai, Sun Chih-Feng, Kuo Chun Yuan, and Tsai Chih Hung — comes after 11 other Taiwanese drug smugglers were condemned to death in Indonesia in recent years.

Indonesia has some of the world’s toughest anti-drug laws, with sentences including the death penalty for smugglers who carry five or more grams.

Several foreign and Indonesian nationals have been executed by firing squad in recent years for drug trafficking, including Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran in 2015, a case that sparked diplomatic outrage and a call to abolish the death penalty.

Capital punishment is carried out by firing squad in Indonesia, which has slowed the pace of its executions in recent years despite broad public support for the penalty.

President Joko Widodo has said Indonesia is in the grips of a drug “emergency” and called for police to shoot suspected drug dealers who attempt to resist arrest.

The police regularly announce drug busts including one in February when they seized 1.6 tons of crystal meth hidden on a Singapore-flagged ship between Indonesia’s Sumatra island and the city state.

A subsequent search of the ship turned up the huge haul of narcotics stuffed into some 81 rice sacks. Four Taiwanese crew were arrested including a 69-year-old man.

Around 250 tons of illegal drugs passed through Indonesia’s borders in 2016, according to figures from the National Narcotics Agency, with China listed as the biggest source country.

Reckless driver refuses to give way for ambulance, actually speeds up to block its passage

https://kannacloud.com/images/2018/04/28/a1f496faeee842a4ba.jpg

It’s tragically not uncommon to see ambulances, sirens blaring and lights flashing, stuck behind slow or unmoving traffic in Indonesia. While it’s technically illegal to block emergency vehicles, the law is rarely enforced and the concept of “giving way” for ambulances is dangerously unknown or ignored by many stubborn drivers, the results of which can obviously be deadly when there’s a patient in the back seat whose life may depend on how fast they can be rushed to the nearest hospital.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T975Ucq3R0

To help combat this, volunteer groups of ambulance escorts have been formed in many Indonesian cities to help carve a path for the emergency vehicles through traffic. But one such group in Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra, showed just how much opposition they can sometimes face at the hands of reckless drivers.

The video, shared by Escorting Ambulance Medan’s Instagram account on Sunday, shows one of the volunteer group’s motorcycle riders attempting to get cars to make way for an ambulance bringing a patient to a local hospital. But one driver does not take kindly to being ordered by the escort to move aside. Not only does the driver not pull over to allow the ambulance to pass, he actually speeds up in order to block its lane.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOnUlL5y1K8

Despite numerous calls and curses from the escort, who repeatedly says that he’s recording the whole incident, the ambulance is only able to narrowly get past the car driver at a toll gate, where the driver (who claimed to be a member of the military) gets out of his car to confront the escort when the video ends.

Although what happened afterwards isn’t explained, the Instagram caption warns the driver that his “attitude is very embarrassing to his institution” and that he should be ready get called upon at his place of work. It ends by saying “Hopefully you will soon be in an ambulance and get stuck in terrible traffic, pal”.

The caption may have alluded to the fact that the driver might be called upon at his place by the police, since his actions in the video (in which his license plate is clearly visible) were in violation of Indonesian traffic laws, which state that blocking an ambulance that is carrying a patient carries a maximum penalty of one month in jail or a IDR250,000 (USD18)

But that law seems to be rarely (if ever) enforced, allowing obstinate Indonesian drivers to escape unpunished. (Of course, this phenomenon is not limited to just Indonesia…)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMJrr38hG4w

But unless something is done to change the mentality of the country’s drivers, Indonesia’s vastly underfunded and understaffed emergency medical responders will need to rely on brave volunteer escorts to help them open the path and save lives.

Indonesian police on the hunt for suspected terrorists, at least 6 killed since yesterday

http://snapcoop.com/images/2018/05/15/a1.jpg

The latest report from the Indonesian Police says that the total death toll from the bomb attacks in East Java stands at 21, including nine alleged to be perpetrators (or the perpetrators’ children), as well as dozens injured. Seeking to prevent any more attacks, police have been aggressively hunting other suspected terrorists, which has led to at least six more deaths.

East Java Police spokesperson Frans Barung Mangera said that law enforcement had tracked down seven more people suspected of having a connection to the terrorist attacks or the group behind them, two of whom were killed when police confronted them.

“Two of these suspects were been shot dead because they resisted the officers,” Frans said as quoted by Wartakota.

http://snapcoop.com/images/2018/05/15/a2.jpg

The police spokesperson said that all seven suspects were believed to be planning attacks in several more locations but told the media that police would not reveal the names of those targets to help maintain public calm. However, he said police were taking all steps necessary to secure those areas.

Frans did specify that three of the five remaining suspects were captured in Surabaya while the other two were secured in Sidoarjo.

Separately, the country’s elite anti-terror police, Densus 88, reported shooting and killing four men at Pasir Hayam Terminal in Cianjur, West Java, at around 1 am yesterday (before the church bombings). Officers confronted the men after following them there from Sukabumi. Another suspect was secured for questioning.

Police said they had reason to believe the men were planning to attack a police station. The weapons they found on the suspects, including firearms and poisoned knives, would seem to support that theory.

The results of their investigation at the crime scene led them to another suspect, identified as MG, who they said was brought to Jakarta this morning for questioning. Densus 88 have not yet revealed if any of the suspects were known to have ties to the terrorist perpetrators in Surabaya or Sidoarjo.

Suicide bombings took place at three different churches in Surabaya on Sunday morning, killing at least 14 and injuring 42. Investigators believe that a single family (including the father, mother and four children aged 9-18) were behind the attacks and that they were linked to the Surabaya chapter of Jemaah Ansharut Daulah, a terrorist network with links to Islamic State (IS). Officials also believe they were among 500 Indonesians recently returned from Syria who had gone to the Middle East to fight with IS and that they had spent some time with the terrorist group learning about terrorism tactics and bomb making.

Then, at around 9 pm, a homemade bomb prematurely exploded in the neighboring city of Sidoarjo in what the police have disturbingly described as another family affair akin to the Surabaya church bombings. Three were killed in this incident.

On Monday morning, five suspected suicide bombers — all believed to be from one family — attacked the Surabaya Police HQ. Four of the alleged bombers were killed, while the youngest among them, an 8-year-old, survived. Four police officers were wounded.

ANOTHER suicide bombing incident rocks Police HQ in Surabaya

http://snapcoop.com/images/2018/05/15/a15c400dcd9ad41803.jpg

The Indonesian province of East Java has seen three deadly explosions in just two days, the latest of which occurred at around 8:50 am today at the headquarters of the Surabaya City Police.

CCTV footage of the incident shows two motorcycles carrying two people each being stopped at the entrance gate of the police HQ before two explosions are seen.

East Java Police Spokesperson Frans Barung confirmed the attack and that several of the victims were cops, but has yet to provide more specific information about the casualties.

“Whether they were hurt or killed, please friends in the media wait [for the information] because we’re investigating the scene,” he said during a press conference, as quoted by Tribun.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the suicide bombings via its propaganda agency Amaq, calling them “martyrdom attacks”.

Then, at around 9 pm, a homemade bomb prematurely exploded in the neighboring city of Sidoarjo in what the police have disturbingly described as another family affair akin to the Surabaya church bombings. Three were killed in this incident.

https://img.jakpost.net/c/2018/05/15/2018_05_15_46028_1526387483._large.jpg

Counterterrorism squad Densus 88 raided on Tuesday evening the residences of terror suspects believed to be linked to the recent bombings in Surabaya and Sidoarjo, East Java. One suspect was killed during the raid, while two families comprising nine people were detained for further questioning.

The police sought to apprehend Dedy Sulistiantono at his residence on Jl. Sikatan IV, Tandes, Surabaya. He is the younger brother of terror suspect Anton Ferdiantono whose wife and eldest son were killed after a bomb went off prematurely at his low-cost apartment in Wonocolo, Sidoarjo. Dedy, however, was shot dead after resisting arrest by attacking the officers with a knife.

“We have detained [Dedy’s] wife and four children [for further investigation],” East Java Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Frans Barung Mangera said, referring to Dedy’s wife Suyanti, 34, and their children, DNS, 14, AISP, 10, HA, 7, and NN, 5.

Later in the evening, Densus 88 also raided the house of terror suspect Ilham Fauzan on Jl. Abdul Waham in Pakis, Surabaya. Ilham had been arrested earlier in Sidoarjo. Police detained Fauzan’s wife and two children.

Police discovered in their preliminary investigations that the suspects behind the string of bombings in Surabaya and Sidoarjo had involved family members in the suicide attacks. Alleged suicide bomber Dita Oeprianto's family of six died in Sunday’s church attacks. Of Anton's family of six, three died and three survived the explosion at the Wonocolo apartment. On Monday morning, a third family attacked the Surabaya Police headquarters in another suicide bombing. The family’s 8-year-old daughter survived the attack and was taken to hospital. (dmr)

Chinese Police thank Bali law enforcement for busting over a hundred Chinese nationals on cyber fraud

https://damdidum.net/stuff/images/images/2018/05/20/a1.jpg

Chinese police have been expressing their appreciation to Bali Police for uncovering an online fraud scheme involving over a hundred Chinese nationals.

Bali Police made one sizable bust earlier this month, arresting 103 alleged Chinese fraudsters at a house in Mengwi.

Speaking from Bali Police headquarters on Wednesday, police from the two different forces seemed chummy, emphasizing the importance of teamwork moving forward.

Cyber fraud has become one of the most loathed crimes that Chinese Police have to deal with, says Tianjin Provincial Police Criminal Investigation Director, Yang Jin Bi.

“We would like to thank the Bali Police Criminal Investigation Unit that helped Chinese Police by working day and night to uncover the online fraud cases. Once we finish collecting evidence, the suspects will be brought to China to undergo the legal process there,” Yang said in Bali on Wednesday, as quoted by Kumparan.

“They’ve changed their modus operandi by finding a new location, namely in Southeast Asia,” said Yang.

Yang says he hopes Chinese and Indonesian police can continue to work together in the future to keep on nabbing Chinese cyber criminals.

“Let’s build a closer relationship of cooperation and have good teamwork in combating transnational crime in order to maintain the security, comfort, and safety of the community,” Yang said.

On behalf of Bali Police, Brig. I Wayan Sunartha said he hopes they can tackle more than just cyber crime.

“Cooperation not only on the cyber crime issue, but also to continue to fight against drugs and human trafficking,” he said.

Sunartha added that since Chinese make up the leading supply of foreign tourists to Bali, immigration must closely monitor Chinese coming in on tourist visas.

“We are currently intensively controlling tourism administration, especially the misuse of visas,” Sunartha said.

Motorcyclist pretends to be possessed to avoid ticket, cops don’t buy it

http://www.imgflex.com/images/2018/05/22/a1.png

Many Indonesians still believe in supernatural superstitions such as ghostly possessions, which has been used by certain unscrupulous individuals to get out of some sticky situations.

These cops weren’t buying it, though.

Last Friday, the Bengkulu Provincial Traffic Police posted three clips on their Instagram page of a motorcyclist who appeared to become possessed by a malevolent spirit after he was pulled over for not having side mirrors on his motorcycle.

In the first clip, the motorcyclist – with his head down, hand curled up like a claw and a poor attempt at a guttural growl – warns the cops who pulled him over, “I swear! I will remember your faces!”

The cops do not appear spooked at all, with one narrating to the camera that they had drained the fuel out of perp’s motorcycle as punishment.

Slide right to the second clip and you’ll see the motorcyclist crying and one cop attempting to comfort him. The cop then says, possibly while trying to contain a smile, “Why are you crying? It’s Ramadan, you shouldn’t be possessed.” The cop then says, “Are you fasting? You are? Then stop crying.”

In the final clip, the motorcyclist is now lying face down on the floor and he’s being made to recite a pledge, dictated by the cops, promising that he will never pretend to be possessed to get out of trouble again.

It’s not clear if the motorcyclist was punished beyond the humiliation and leaked fuel, but under Indonesian traffic law, missing side mirrors on motorcycles is an offense punishable by one year imprisonment or a fine of IDR250K (US$17.71).

Many Indonesians have claimed to have been possessed in the past. In 2016, a factory in Bekasi sent home all 700 of its workers after 30 of them supposedly became possessed, one at a time, during the course of one morning. Demons have apparently taken control of cinema-goers’ bodies too, with reports of possession during the screenings of The Conjuring 2 and Annabelle in two different cities in recent years (though there are hints that those possessions were viral marketing stunts since the two movies are from the same horror franchise).

But not all pretend possessions are bad. In 2015, a 17-year-old girl in Banten escaped a rape attempt in an angkot minivan, reportedly after she screamed like a ghost was possessing her.

Panicked Lion Air passengers open emergency door and jump off still running engine over bomb scare

https://youtu.be/ahNo9c9AcyQ

Indonesia has been on edge since multiple suicide bomb attacks in Surabaya and other terrorist activity had the country on high alert about two weeks ago. Sometimes when people are tense they’ll say inappropriate things out of nervousness, but we don’t think that’s enough to explain all the people who have allegedly made bomb jokes at Indonesian airports since the attacks.

The latest and most dramatic incident involves a young man accused of making a bomb joke while on Jakarta-bound Lion Flight JT 687, which was on the runway of the airport in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, yesterday.

The resultant panic led passengers to open the emergency door so they could evacuate out onto the wing but several were hurt while dangerously trying to jump off the wing by sliding off the side of the still running engine. Police said eight had injuries severe enough to require serious medical care.

Security detained the suspect, a young man they identified to the media as FN, a Papuan scholarship student at Universitas Tanjungpura in Pontianak. They confirmed there were no explosives in his bag or on the plane.

https://youtu.be/j_LRVWGZOts

Some initial media reports said that FN talked about a bomb being on the plane after becoming angry with an attendant moving his bag. However police said they had not yet officially charged him with violating air safety regulations as the investigation is ongoing.

There are other reports that FN was telling the cabin crew member moving his bag “hati-hati ada laptop, Bu,” (“Be careful there is a laptop, ma’am) and that somebody misheard him saying there’s a bomb. The crew quickly asked him to be questioned in another area but other passengers had already become panicked and soon the the emergency door was opened.

Lion Air spokesperson Danang Mandala Prihanton said that the passengers had been given the standard instructions regarding use of the emergency exits and that they were never instructed to open the door by the crew.

The flight, originally scheduled to leave Pontianak at 6:50pm finally departed at 9:45pm, left minus the suspect and the injured passengers and arrived in Jakarta without incident.

If FN is charged with violating civil aviation security laws he, like all those who make bomb jokes or threats on airplanes in Indonesia, could face up to 8 years in prison.

Unbelievably, this is the second time a passenger has made a bomb joke on a Lion Air flight this week. Another passenger had to be ejected from a flight leaving Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta Airport for Kuala Lumpur on Sunday afternoon for the same faux explosive reason, causing the flight to be delayed three hours.

Last week, two senior party officials from of Banyuwangi’s Regional Executive Council (DPRD) make bomb jokes at the Banyuuwangi airport, causing the flight to be delayed and an ongoing investigation. They apologized but claimed they didn’t know it was against the law.

Nurse sentenced to 9 months for fondling patient while she was under anesthesia in Surabaya hospital

http://imgstor.com/images/2018/06/07/a1.jpg

One of the most high-profile sexual harassment cases in Indonesia this year, involving a nurse at a Surabaya hospital who allegedly fondled a patient in an anesthesia-induced, half-conscious state, has reached its initial legal conclusion today with a guilty verdict for the defendant.

The Surabaya District Court sentenced the nurse, identified as Zunaidi Abdillah, to 9 months in prison for sexual assault on a victim who was not fully in a conscious state, in accordance with Article 290 Verse 1 of the KUHP (Criminal Code).

The sentence is more lenient than the 1 year and 6 months previously demanded by prosecutors.

Zunaidi’s legal representative, Mohamad Soleh, said they will appeal against the sentence.

“We don’t get it, there was no witness testifying against the defendant throughout the trial. We will appeal for sure,” he said, as quoted by Kompas today.

The sexual harassment allegation blew up in January, when a viral video showed Zunaidi apologizing to a distressed female patient who accused him of fondling her breasts while transferring her to a recovery room following her C-section.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxwvnpVvaI4

The police arrested Zubaidi after he went AWOL for a day after the incident and charged him with obscenity, which carries a maximum 7 year sentence.

In court, Zubaidi claimed that he did not sexually harass the patient and that he was pressured to apologize in the viral video. In their investigation of the case, the Indonesian National Nurses Union (PPNI) said they believe that Zubaidi did not molest the patient and that he had only been taking off the monitors attached to her chest.

Ramadan blessing usually comes in the form of spiritual enlightenment for Muslims, but for this guy, it supposedly came in the form of so much cash that he could bathe in it.

Over the past few days, a video has gone viral on Indonesian social media featuring a man sitting in a bathtub filled with stacks of IDR100K (US$7.21) notes. While somebody off frame continues to throw wads of cash into the tub, he explains that the money was a Ramadan blessing by Allah, who is using him as an agent to spread the wealth to the poor and needy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz45JfQgKLw

“I can’t… I… I… I feel like crying because I have never seen this much money. Truly I have never seen this much money,” the man said while looking like he’s fake sobbing.

He then says that he’s going to use the money to build religious schools, mosques, as well as donating it to widows, the poor, and charities.

Is this guy for real? Well, there has been no news of anyone looking like him making good on the donation promises, leading to speculation that the video is just an internet comedy bit or a satire of celebrity preachers asking for donations.

Well, the police, who haven’t been able to identify the man, apparently don’t see anything humorous about the video. Instead, authorities warned that being ostentatious with one’s money, especially online, is like screaming “come and rob me” to criminals.

“Bathing in money in a bathtub, that invites criminal action. What for? Is it to show off? Even in religion [showing off] is not good. In terms of safety it’s inadvisable,” said National Police head of Public Relations Mohammad Iqbal, as quoted by Detik yesterday.

Drowsy elderly man accidentally drinks election ink instead of coffee at voting station

175360

A mayoral candidate losing to an empty box on the ballot in Makassar might not even be funniest story to come out of yesterday’s highly eventful nationwide regional elections in Indonesia. Arguably the most comical incident involved some election ink and a very unfortunate kakek (old man).

Mustafa, a 61-year-old man from Pontianak, West Borneo, claimed he didn’t get much sleep the night before yesterday’s election as he was among the civilian volunteers guarding the voting station in his neighborhood. By 11am on election day, Mustafa said he wanted to have some coffee because he was sleepy.

“I was sleepy, and I wanted to drink coffee. The cup of coffee was placed next to a container filled with election ink. Because I was feeling drowsy and I was facing the voters who had just come in, I picked up the election ink container. And I drank it. About a gulp of it,” Mustafa said, as quoted by Okezone.

Mustafa said he immediately realized the bitter liquid he swallowed wasn’t coffee.

“I spit out as much as I could. Always spitting out. Maybe hundreds of times. Every time I spit out, my saliva was blue,” he said.

Mustafa added that he has a cough now, possibly from drinking the ink, but that he doesn’t have any money to get himself checked out at the hospital.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaxoLQHdM4k

The election ink is the official signifier that a voter had cast his/her vote in an election in Indonesia. Voters have to dip one or more of their fingers into the ink, leaving a purple/blue tint on the skin that comes off within a couple of days. The ink reportedly contains alcohol, silver nitrate and purple dye among other chemicals, which makes it sound quite ominous, but luckily Mustafa seems to be just fine.

Despite being declared dead from pet cobra’s bite, family refuses to bury son, hopes ritual can cure him

177965

Seventeen-year-old Rizky Ahmad seemed to have genuine affection for his pet king cobra, which he had taken in after finding it caught in a net following a flood in his hometown of Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan. His social media was filled with photos, such as the one above, of him playing and posing with the 3-meter-long reptile, which his family said he believed to be tame.

But as it goes in the fable, a snake cannot deny its nature. When Rizky brought the snake out to show it off at Palangkaraya’s Car Free Day event on Sunday, the cobra bit him in his right arm. The teenager reportedly shrugged it off and continued to play with his pet for around an hour before he felt the effects of the poison.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmoIM66ZQLI

He was rushed to nearby Doris Sylvanus Hospital, where he was put in intensive care, given multiple doses of anti-venom and treated for 24-hours before doctors finally declared him dead.

But Rizky’s family refused to accept the doctors’ assessment and have taken his body home, believing their son still shows signs of life and that he could still be saved through means beyond medical science.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geLfKEcpzTI

“Even though we have entered the second day, we still believe that our child has not died because his body is still warm and sweaty. We are still trying to perform a ritual so that our child can recover,” said Rizky’s father, Suwardi, when met by Kompas reporters at his home on Tuesday.

Reports say that, until at least last night, the family along with a pawang ular (an occupation that might loosely be translated as “snake shaman”) were still conducting the ritual aimed at bringing Rizky back. According to reports, the king cobra that bit him was placed in a box next to the bed upon which Rizky’s body had been laid and that, at times the snake had been placed in the bed with him as part of the ritual.

Dr. Theodorus Sapta Atmadja, who had helped treat Rizky at Doris Sylvanus Hospital, said that it was the family’s choice to perform the ritual on their child but that it was beyond the realm of medicine and neither the hospital nor the doctors who treated Rizky could endorse or be held responsible for the consequences.

Belief in the supernatural, including spiritual healing, remains prominent in some parts of Indonesia. The latest draft revision to the country’s criminal code includes laws that would make it a criminal offense for an individual to make claims of supernatural powers that could lead to the pain or suffering of others.

A four-year-old Indonesian boy, named Muhamad Mezut Ozil (undoubtedly after German soccer superstar Mesut Özil), has attracted national media attention over a claimed supernatural occurrence pertaining to his genitalia.

As reported by Merdeka, Ozil’s parents believe that he recently had his penis circumcised by a djinn — an Islamic genie — resulting in some swelling.

“He is a little sore right now. Maybe because of the swelling,” said Ozil’s mother, Haryani, as quoted by Merdeka yesterday.

Ozil, who lives with his family in the city of Depok, West Java, says he no longer feels pain and is now able to run around with his friends.

His parents did not indicate if they were going to have Ozil checked out by a doctor, in case, you know, he had a serious medical condition instead of encountering a snip-happy genie.

That’s perhaps because boys being circumcised by genies is quite a common urban legend in Indonesia. In April of last year, the family of a boy in West Jakarta also made the same genie claim, saying his penis was suddenly circumcised after he came home from playing with his friends.

Furthermore, making these boys go through an examination by a medical professional is probably tricky but should probably be mandatory in cases like this where there are elements of potential child abuse.

Most Indonesian boys, especially Muslims, remember their circumcisions because they are often carried out when they are around five year old before the onset of puberty. Many remember the operation with certain fondness, since circumcisions are traditionally a rite of passage into manhood rewarded with parties and presents.

Jakarta’s ‘rainbow roads’ for Asian Games go back to black and white after gov’t learns it’s against regulations

180251

With the Jakarta Provincial Government deep into preparations for hosting the Asian Games, which begins on August 18, Governor Anies Baswedan’s administration has been getting hit with a constant barrage of criticism over its perceived lack of preparations for the massive sporting event, including controversies over a smelly canal curtain, temporary grass strips and other apparently ad hoc policies.

The latest colorful anecdote added to that pile of accusations concern the government’s decision to paint a large swathe of boring black and white cement road separators in some parts of the city, one of the first being Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta.

After people started noticing the roadblocks’ rainbow redesigns over the weekend, Anies was asked about it by the media and said that it was one of several steps take by the government to beautify the city before the Asian Games. He said that the makeover was just temporary and that they had only done it in late July as they were afraid the colors might have faded before the end of the games if they had repainted them earlier.

“The nature of Indonesia is that it’s hot and rainy, so we do not want the colors to fade during the Asian Games. This was all planned ahead of time, it was just executed in July,” Anies said on Sunday as quoted by Tribun.

Vice Governor Sandiaga Uno said that the roadblock repainting was the “people’s initiative” but then confusingly said that the Jakarta Provincial Government had asked the mayor of Central Jakarta to give some of the roadblocks in his part of the city the rainbow treatment. But then he also said he was pleased that citizens in some other parts of the city had taken the initiative on their own. Photos such as the ones below show that government workers did handle at least some of the rainbow painting.

Some Jakarta netizens seemed to like the colorful blocks while other made fun of them, such as this brilliant meme noting there resemblance to a real life version of the hardest track from the classic Nintendo racing game Mario Kart.

But many others questioned the decorative decision, noting that the reason the blocks were painted black and white was for safety concerns. However, the deputy head of the Jakarta Transportation Department, Sigit Wijatmiko, said on Sunday that the rainbow separators were not illegal because the law does not specify their color since their effectiveness was based only on their form, unlike a marker.

However, that reasoning apparently didn’t hold up to much scrutiny as, after just a few days of fabulousness, the separators were back in their original boring but better-in-terms-of-safety black-and-white paint jobs.

Anies explained the reason for this today by saying that Yusmada Gaizal, Jakarta’s assistant head of Development and the Environment, had informed him that the road separator blocks were indeed classified as road markers after all and thus were required to follow the color guidelines stipulated by the law for safety reasons.

“The Development assistant head yesterday explained that it’s important that we follow the provisions on road markings because their functions are not only aesthetics but also for safety,” Anies said today as quoted by Detik.

Jakarta Police officials explained that, while it wasn’t well known, the black and white separators were meant to signal to drivers that they were within a zebra crossing zone in which pedestrians might be traversing the road.

Although the cost of the error is not much more than that of the paint and labor for repainting them twice, to many it reflects a pattern seen in many of the Jakarta government’s temporary improvements for the Asian Games, such as the lack of cement walking paths in front of the bus stops on Jalan Sudirman’s newly laid but apparently temporary grass strips.

In another example of poor paint planning pointed out by memes below, Anies’ administration had also added rainbow color panels to the side of the Sentiong Canal, before the governor decided to cover the canal with a black nylon cloth to keep the canal’s foul appearance and smell from disturbing the visiting athletes staying in the nearby Wisma Atlet dormitory complex in Kemayoran.

It seems like the orientation of the Indonesian flag has become a super sensitive topic these days.

Not long after a teenaged Malaysian soccer player received death threats due to his use of an upside-down Indonesian flag (AKA the Polish flag) emoji, a part-time cleaner working at the Palopo City Education Board office committed the same flag faux pas recently, only this time, it involved an actual physical flag.

The cleaner, named Rahmat, was reportedly given the task of raising the flag at his office recently as the usual flag raiser was off duty that day. He unknowingly raised it upside down, and it only came to the attention of the office’s staff some three hours later, by which time photos of the upside-down flag have been taken by citizens and were posted online, inevitably becoming viral and drawing netizens’ outrage.

Palopo Education Board Head Akmal Hasan said the fault was Rahmat’s alone and he was given a pretty physically rigorous punishment — though thankfully no death threats were reported in this case.

“We gave him the sanction of having to salute the flag for half an hour, and we reminded him to be careful when raising the flag because it’s a national symbol. Next time, we won’t give him the task of raising the flag,” Akmal told Kompas today.

Rahmat himself admitted his error and said he had never raised the flag before in his life.

“Yes, I’m sorry, I was mistaken. I never raised a flag before so I didn’t pay attention to the fact that the white was above the red,” he said.

JAKARTA (Reuters) - An Indonesian court sentenced a Buddhist woman to 18 months in prison for blasphemy on Tuesday, after she was accused of insulting Islam for complaining that neighborhood mosque was too loud.

Meiliana, a 44-year old ethnic Chinese Buddhist had complained the Muslim call to prayer, repeated five times a day, was being played too loudly at the mosque near her house in North Sumatra.

Indonesia has the world’s largest population of Muslims and sizable Buddhist, Christian and other religious minorities. Recent years have seen a rise in conservative and hardline interpretations of Islam, prompting fears that the secular nation’s long-standing reputation for tolerance and diversity was being eroded.

"She had said something that insulted religion, in this case Islam," said Jamaluddin, spokesman of the Medan district court, adding the defendant had “showed remorse and apologized”.

Political activists have said the country’s stringent blasphemy laws are being used to bully minorities and violate religious freedoms.

Last year, the former ethnic Chinese governor of Jakarta was tried and jailed for blasphemy after several Muslim groups accused him of insulting Islam when he said his political rivals were using the Koran to deceive voters.

The ruling was widely condemned and believed to be politically motivated. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama also lost his re-election bid because of the accusations.

There are hundreds of thousands of mosques across the vast archipelago and most use loudspeakers to play the ‘azan’ or call to prayer, which lasts a few minutes. But many also play lengthy versions of prayers or sermons lasting over 30 minutes, which has been deemed unnecessary by the Indonesian Mosque Council.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla, who is also a member of the Council, formed a team in 2015 to review mosques’ use of loudspeakers and regulate their use and volume. He has previously called on mosques to use their public address systems “wisely”.

Kalla’s spokesman did not respond to requests for comment on Meiliana’s conviction.

Meiliana's lawyer, Ranto Sibarani, said they would appeal the verdict, according to The Jakarta Post.

Asian Games fever swept some people way more than others, apparently, with one couple naming their child after the second-biggest multi-sport event in the world.

August 18, 2018 was a historic day for Indonesia, especially for Asian Games co-host cities Jakarta and Palembang, with the opening ceremony of the games taking place in the capital city’s Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) stadium. A baby girl was also born in Palembang that day, and she will forever be associated with the Asian Games thanks to her unique name, which has gone viral recently.

“Praise God, we received an Asian Games blessing, a historic moment. That’s why we named our child Adibah Asian Games,” father Yordania Denny told Merdeka yesterday.

Yordania said baby Adibah Asian Games was born a month ahead of the doctor’s prediction, and that he has high hopes for her to be a successful athlete as her name might imply.

“I want my child to be a great athlete. When she’s bigger I will train her in any sport. Hopefully it will come true,” he said.

Well, all the best of luck to Adibah Asian Games. We, too, expect gold medals from you in the future.

Adibah Asian Games is not the only Indonesian with a unique name. Last year, for example, a couple in South Tangerang named their baby Pajero Sport due to the father’s love for the Mitsubishi SUV. Other Indonesians with funny names to go viral in recent years include Kentut (which translates to fart), Tuhan (God), and Saiton (Satan).

If you’ve ever been inside an airport smoking room, you know they’re generally pretty depressing places, filled with thick clouds of heavy exhaust expelled by grim looking passengers trying to get in as many puffs as they can before boarding their flights and being stuck in that big no-smoking room in the sky for hours on end.

But while your average airport smoking room may be depressing, this one located inside Bandung’s Husein Sastranegara Airport is downright terrifying, at least according to this viral Facebook post by a user named Dode Yogiswara.

In the Bandung airport. Went into the smoking room. The room is really cramped. Maybe about 2.5 x 1.5 meters in size. The walls are painted reddish brown like dirt. After lighting my cigarette, I looked up and there was a picture of some men and women sprinkling flowers down from above. I immediately didn’t feel good and quickly put the cigarette out and left.

The post has been shared over 17,000 times since Dode uploaded it on Friday and attracted thousands of comments, with most praising the airport’s morbid design choice and some saying it should be expanded to smoking rooms nationwide.

Andika Nuryaman, the airport’s general manager, told Detik that the goal of the room was indeed to remind people about the dangers of their habit. He said that in the year since the spooky smoking room has been open, more than a few smokers have complained about it and refused to go inside.

Indonesia has some of the highest smoking rates in the world while also having some of the weakest tobacco control regulations, leading to over 200,000 tobacco-related deaths per year. Cigarettes have also been shown to be one of the greatest contributors to poverty in Indonesian households. Despite a majority of Indonesians agreeing that the government should increase the price on cigarettes to decrease demand, the central government has steadily refused to take any major actions that would decrease smoker demands.

...mom says addiction started with him picking butts off the floor.

http://sonia.fun/images/2018/09/04/a0.jpg

Indonesia may have its next infamous child smoker after the disturbing story of a 2-year-old boy from Sukabumi, West Java, recently went viral due to his extremely dangerous addiction.

The boy, identified by his initials RAP, has reportedly been addicted to smoking cigarettes for about a month and a half, burning through up to two packs a day. According to his mother, identified as Maryati, he picked up his horrible habit after he started becoming intrigued by cigarettes and picking their discarded butts off the floor.

“It started with picking up cigarette butts and now he’s smoking,” Maryati told local news website SukabumiUpdate yesterday.

Maryati added that she and her husband, Misbahudin, found it difficult to say no to RAP’s nicotine cravings as the boy would throw a tantrum until he’s given a cigarette. She said that he also needs to have a puff before he can go to sleep.

Misbahudin, who himself is an occasional smoker, said he was surprised that his son could puff like a seasoned smoker, and that the boy would even bum cigarettes from other adults if his parents wouldn’t feed his habit.

“I don’t even smoke that often. I only smoke at work. When he (RAP) smokes it has to be with a cup of mochaccino,” he told SukabumiUpdate.

RAP’s parents say they are going to seek an unspecified rehabilitation treatment for their son, and the boy is apparently open to the idea.

There has been no reports of possible government intervention in RAP’s rehabilitation nor his parents possible prosecution for criminal negligence or child endangerment.

Amid the international outcry and embarrassment over his case, the government promised to pass more measures to stop children from getting addicted to tobacco.

But it is clear that lawmakers still aren’t doing nearly enough to prevent young people from picking up the deadly habit, as their own statistics show that the number of smokers under 18 in Indonesia rose in recent years, from 7.2% in 2014 to 8.8% in 2015.

While the government does indeed have numerous anti-tobacco programs, it is at cross-purposes with other parts of the government that are actively supporting the tobacco industry by, for example, keeping tariffs on tobacco low so that they remain affordable to the vast majority of poor Indonesians.

The government has also continuously refused to ratify the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), and it’s the only country in Asia yet to sign and ratify the convention, which would, among other things, minimize the exposure of tobacco advertising that’s so prevalent in the country.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRP-b1Xq0ek

The WHO estimates about 200,000 Indonesians dies due to tobacco-related diseases each year. Think about that the next time a government official goes on about the country needing to execute drug dealers to stop a supposed drug emergency. Nicotine is the true drug scourge of Indonesia, and the government is sitting back and counting its tobacco tax revenues while it lets another generation get hooked.

A little boy who appears to be no older than a year old is the subject of a viral video that is currently causing outrage on social media in Indonesia due to apparent parental neglect.

The brief video, shared by viral content aggregator on Instagram @dagelan two days ago, which has been viewed close to 1 million times at the time of writing, shows the boy fearlessly playing with a huge king cobra. Apparently oblivious to the danger the scaly beast can pose, the toddler seems to take great joy in slapping the snake…

http://sonia.fun/images/2018/09/04/a00018f.jpg

Throughout the video, at least a couple of adults — one of whom was holding the camera — can be heard off frame, laughing along with the boy and even encouraging him to kiss the snake at one point.

It’s not clear exactly where or when the video was taken, but netizens have pointed out that the motorcycle in the background sports an Indonesian license plate and the adults were speaking Indonesian. While the video has gone viral due to @dagelan in the last couple of days, versions of the video can be found dating as far back as two weeks ago on social media.

http://sonia.fun/images/2018/09/04/a01.jpg

Inevitably, netizens flooded the comments section with criticism directed at the boy’s parents, accusing them of neglect. One comment read, “what were the parents and the person who filmed the video thinking?” while another read, “If the baby gets bitten, then the parents will regret this. Use your brains.”

There have been no reports yet of Indonesian authorities investigating the video, but in the past officials have gotten involved in some cases of viral videos showing neglectful or abusive behavior by parents.

An Indonesian man’s lawyer claimed his client was not trying to cause any grief for his ex-wife when he paid the IDR 178 million (USD 12,160) he had been ordered to give her by the court as part of their divorce settlement — using predominantly small change.

Dwi Susilarto arrived at the religious court of Karanganyar in Central Java yesterday hauling a dozen sacks filled with IDR 153 million (USD 10,500) in small change, a hefty payment that weighed in at about 890 kilograms according to his lawyer, Sutarto.

A fight nearly broke out between the Dwi and his ex-wife’s lawyer, who refused to count the money transported in a wheelbarrow pushed by the 54-year-old and two friends.

Despite the unwieldiness of his client’s form of payment, Sutarto insisted that there was no ill intent on Dwi’s part towards his ex-wife, Hermi Setyowati.

“There was absolutely no intention to harass. The money was obtained from donations from friends, piggy bank savings, etc. That is indeed the case here,” Sutarto said as quoted by Detik yesterday.

Hermi wasn’t buying her former husband’s excuse. According to media reports, she said the payment was insulting and insinuated that she was poor. However, she eventually accepted the funds and the court ordered its staff to count the money.

According to the court proceedings, Dwi was the one who sought the divorce claiming that he and Hermi had not lived together for nine years. Their marriage was reportedly mut’ah, a type of contractual union that is meant to be private and temporary based upon an agreement between the two parties (it is sometimes used as a religious justification for prostitution as in the case of Arab sex tourists in Puncak).

The divorce lawsuit was granted by the Karanganyar religious court with Hermi being awarded a IDR 43 million alimony payment for her living expenses. But Hermi appealed and the Central Java High Religion Court found that Dwi would have to pay her IDR 178 million instead.

We were not surprised to learn that this sort of thing is not unprecedented. For example, in 2013 an American woman paid her USD 50.12 divorce settlement to her ex-husband in coins — mixed with rice and beans.

A district in Indonesia’s deeply Islamic Aceh province has banned men and women from dining together unless they are married or related, according to an official who said it would help women be "more well behaved".

Aceh is the only region in the world’s most populous Muslim majority country that imposes Islamic law and has been criticised in the past for putting moral restrictions on women.

It also attracted global condemnation for publicly whipping people found guilty of a range of offences including homosexuality, gambling and drinking alcohol.

Under the latest regulation, women in Bireuën district on Sumatra island will not be able to share a table with men at restaurants and coffee shops unless they are accompanied by their husband or a close male relative.

Co-workers on their lunch break will also be forbidden from sharing a meal.

"The objective is to protect women’s dignity so they will feel more comfortable, more at ease, more well behaved and will not do anything that violates sharia (Islamic law)," the head of the local sharia office, Jufliwan – who like many Indonesians has only one name – told AFP on Wednesday.

Another part of the directive, signed by the district head on 5 August, said women who were alone or without a family member should not be served at restaurants and cafés after 9pm.

Authorities say it will be up to restaurateurs to enforce the regulation, although offenders will not be punished.

Three years ago the provincial capital, Banda Aceh, banned unaccompanied women from entertainment venues including cafes and sports halls after 11pm.

In 2013, Lhokseumawe city in Sumatra’s north ordered women to sit "side-saddle" on motorbikes. The mayor at the time said straddling male drivers on motorbikes was "improper".

A couple in Indonesia celebrated promising to spend the rest of their lives together, presumably while being constantly reminded of the “til death do us part” part of the vow, while holding their wedding reception in a graveyard.

A video posted on Facebook by user Eris Riswandi showing a wedding reception taking place in a cemetery went hugely viral over the weekend. The video has been watched 2.3 million times at the time of writing.

Morbid venue notwithstanding, at least the guests still had enough respect for the dead (or maybe fear of vengeance from beyond the grave) not to dance on the graves to the super catchy dangdut music being played on stage. Heck, the singer too was seemingly aware enough of her surroundings to be wearing black.

That said, we kind of felt sorry for the MC who tried so hard to liven up the non-existent atmosphere that he even asked for song requests. He should know his failure does not reflect badly on his ceremonial mastery as we’re sure he didn’t choose the venue.

It’s not yet known exactly where this viral video was taken.

Not all wedding receptions in Indonesia take place at lavish, expensive venues. In fact, many people, due to financial constraints, hold receptions in public areas like on the street (often with the permission of village/district heads) or on empty plots of land. This, however, technically isn’t an empty plot of land.

One of the most recent weird wedding venue videos to go viral was a reception on a train track in Yogyakarta. Luckily, the particular railway on which the reception was held had been decommissioned.

What’s more infuriating than your average double-booking mishap by budget airlines? One passenger flying Indonesian low cost carrier Lion Air took to social media recently to complain about being assigned a seat that didn’t even exist on her plane.

Yesterday, a Facebook user by the name of Satwika Ika posted about her experience flying Lion Air from the city of Palembang to Jakarta on Sept. 16. She wrote that as soon as she boarded the flight, she wasn’t able to find her assigned seat, 35F, because the seats in the plane only went up to row 34.

Not only that, Satwika said the flight attendants were generally unhelpful and quite rude. She was told to sit in row 34, only for the assigned passenger to come and remove her from the seat. Satwika said she got in an argument with one of the flight attendants after she refused to be moved to another empty seat in case she would have to move again.

Eventually, a ground crew member came on board and had Satwika take an unassigned seat. Satwika noted that several other passengers, including a family with a small child, shared the same fate.

She claims she received no apology from any of the Lion Air crew members that day.

After the post went viral, having been shared over 4,000 times at the time of writing, Lion Air issued an explanation (but still no apology, it seems) for the seating confusion. According to the airline, they had to switch Satwika’s flight to a smaller plane due to a scheduling conflict caused by delays that day.

“JT-1341 should have been operated by a Boeing 737-900ER plane with a maximum capacity of 215 and 39 rows of seats,” Lion Air Corporate Communications officer Danang Mandala Prihantoro wrote in an official statement, as picked up by Detik today.

This is the shocking moment a police officer calmly walks away from rioting protesters with a massive arrow sticking out of his eye.

The incident took place in the Pegunungan Bintang Regency in Papua, Indonesia's eastern province.

According to local media, five residents were injured during the riot while at least 10 buildings were burned to the ground.

Reports also said that another police officer was shot in the leg with a long arrow similar to the one seen in the cop's eye in the footage.

Angry clashes have taken place since April this year, with locals opposing the leadership of local regent ConstansOktemka.

The community council has passed a vote of no confidence in Oktemka's regency following the first two years of a five-year term.

During violent outbreaks in the district of Oksibil on 2nd October, a beefy cop was hit in the eye with a large arrow.

In the video footage, the unnamed officer is seen calmly walking away from rioters with the arrow protruding out of his right eye.

The well-built officer salutes a colleague and then uses his raised hand to gingerly check his eye wound.

Then, with a spring to his step, the hard-as-nails cop continues strolling along the road as the fighting continues in the background.

Policeman Krishna Murti shared the clip on Instagram, where it has been viewed nearly 290,000 times, calling his colleague 'a hero' and 'strong'.

The injured cop was transferred to Jayapura for emergency surgery and there have been no further updates on his condition.

KARAWANG, Indonesia (AP) — A Lion Air plane carrying 189 people crashed into the sea just minutes after taking off from Indonesia's capital on Monday in a blow to the country's aviation safety record after the lifting of bans on its airlines by the European Union and U.S.

Indonesia's disaster agency posted photos online of a crushed smartphone, books, bags and parts of the aircraft fuselage that had been collected by search and rescue vessels.

Lion Air said the brand-new aircraft, on a 1-hour-and-10-minute flight to Pangkal Pinang on an island chain off Sumatra, was carrying 181 passengers, including one child and two babies, and eight crew members.

Indonesian TV broadcast pictures of a fuel slick and debris field. Distraught friends and relatives prayed and hugged each other as they waited at Pangkal Pinang's airport.

The National Search and Rescue Agency's deputy chief, Nugroho Budi Wiryanto, said some 300 people including soldiers, police and local fishermen are involved in the search and that so far it has recovered no bodies — only ID cards, personal belongings and aircraft debris.

"We are waiting for the miracle from God," said Wiryanto, when asked if there's any hope of survivors.

At the agency's headquarters in Jakarta, family members turned up, hoping desperately for news.

Feni, who uses a single name, said her soon to be married sister was on the flight, planning to meet relatives in Pangkal Pinang.

"We are here to find any information about my younger sister, her fiance, her in-law to be and a friend of them," said Feni.

"We don't have any information," she said, as her father wiped tears from reddened eyes. "No one provided us with any information that we need. "We're confused. We hope that our family is still alive," she said.

Indonesia's Finance Minister Sri Mulyani also arrived at the agency and met with its chief, seeking information about 20 finance ministry staff who were on the flight after attending a ministry event in Jakarta.

The search and rescue agency said the flight ended in waters off West Java that are 30 to 35 meters (98 to 115 feet) deep.

The agency's chief Muhammad Syaugi told a news conference that divers are trying to locate the wreckage.

Weather conditions for the flight were safe, according to the Indonesian meteorology agency. It said the type of clouds associated with turbulence was not present and winds were weak.

The Boeing 737 Max 8 was delivered to Lion Air in mid-August and put in use within days, according to aviation website Flightradar24. Malindo Air, a Malaysian subsidiary of Jakarta-based Lion Air, was the first airline to being using the 737 Max 8 last year. The Max 8 replaced the similar 800 in the Chicago-based planemaker's product line.

Lion Air's president-director Edward Sirait said the plane had a "technical problem" on its previous flight from Bali to Jakarta but it had been fully remedied. He didn't know specifics of the problem when asked in a TV interview. The pilot of Flight 610 had more than 6,000 flying hours while the co-pilot had more than 5,000 hours, according to the airline.

Boeing Co. said it was "deeply saddened" by the crash and was prepared to provide technical assistance into the crash probe, which will be carried out by Indonesian investigators.

In its statement, the Chicago-based manufacturer expressed its concern for the 189 people onboard, and offered "heartfelt sympathies to their families and loved ones."

Indonesia's Transport Ministry said the plane took off from Jakarta about 6.20 a.m. and crashed just 13 minutes later. Data from FlightAware showed it had reached an altitude of only 5,200 feet (1,580 meters).

The transport ministry said crisis centers have been set up Pangkal Pinang's airport and Jakarta's Soekarno Hatta airport.

The crash is the worst airline disaster in Indonesia since an AirAsia flight from Surabaya to Singapore plunged into the sea in December 2014, killing all 162 on board.

Indonesian airlines were barred in 2007 were flying to Europe because of safety concerns, though several were allowed to resume services in the following decade. The ban was completely lifted in June this year. The U.S. lifted a decadelong ban in 2016.

Lion Air, a discount carrier, is one of Indonesia's youngest and biggest airlines, flying to dozens of domestic and international destinations.

In 2013, one of its Boeing 737-800 jets missed the runway while landing on the resort island of Bali, crashing into the sea without causing any fatalities among the 108 people on board.
