Authorities now plan to launch a competition offering cash prizes of 5mn rupiah ($380) to animal experts for each of the reptiles caught alive, said local tourism chief Marius Ardu Jelamu.

“We have warned visitors to be careful when visiting the beaches but it’s not enough, we must do something,” Jelamu told AFP. “Some of these animals are 3m to 4m (10’ to 13’) long, this is very scary.”

5 juta looks like good money, but risk of losing one's arm & leg will be at stake. i'm curious if there's any takers. :D

Back in March, a massive and sometimes violent protest by taxi and other public transportation drivers against the rise of ride-hailing app services such as Uber and GrabCar took place throughout Jakarta. Today, it’s the drivers of the so called “online taxis” that are set to protest, demonstrating against new regulations that they say are unfairly hurting their industry. And organizers say they are ready to bring 1,000 drivers to the street to have their voices heard.

After last March’s protest and numerous other legal clashes over the legality of ride-hailing apps, the government eventually decided to create new regulations that would allow services like Uber, GrabCar and GoCar to operate normally in Indonesia. These new regulations are set to go into force at the beginning of October.

However, the protesters say these new regulations are proving too difficult to comply with, putting unjust burdens and costs on the company’s partner drivers.

"Some of the points in [the new regulations], hurt online taxi drivers. One of them is the provision that we all obtain public transport SIM A type driver’s licenses," said Andryawal Simanjuntak, one of the protest’s coordinators, when contacted by Kompas on Sunday.

Andryawal pointed out that the cost of obtaining the special driver’s license cost each applicant around Rp 1 million to Rp 1.5 million. The driving simulation test applicants must pass is also notoriously difficult.

Another sticking point in the new regulation is the vehicle roadworthiness tests (KIR) that all cars registered with ride hailing companies are required to take. Andryawal said that taking the test registers the car as a public transport vehicle, which would force drivers to forfeit their private auto insurance, opening them up to all sorts of risks.

The regulations also require that each driver’s car be licensed to a public transport company collective, which is impossible to do for cars which are not still being paid for in installments.

An an example of how difficult the new regulations are to meet, the Indonesian Car Rental Businessmen Association (PPRI), a cooperative working with GrabCar, says only 966 cars out of a total 5,000 have passed the KIR test so far, and only 50 of their drivers have attained the type A SIM license. Other cooperatives are reporting similar numbers.

The protesters argue that the government should revoke the new regulations as the ride hailing services offer an opportunity to reduce the country’s unemployment rate by providing vital jobs.

"The rule are detrimental to us. This policy only empowers large employers and is a form of monopoly,” Andryawal said.

Today’s protest are set to start at 11am today and will take place in front of the the State Palace, the Ministry of Transportation and the House of Representatives.

JAKARTA: The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) is monitoring Batam-based religious radio station HangFM after Singapore authorities said it propagates extremist views.

Speaking to Channel NewsAsia on Monday (Aug 22), the head of KPI's Riau chapter Azwardi said: “We have had a dialogue with them and we continue to monitor them.”

The broadcasting regulatory body in Riau province said if the station is found to have violated rules with the content of its broadcasts, it may be subject to airtime limits and could even see its licence taken away after warning letters have been issued.

HangFM was thrust into the spotlight after Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said two Internal Security Act detainees - Rosli Hamzah and Mohamed Omar Mahadi - had become radicalised after listening to the radio station from 2009 and 2010 respectively.

Subsequently, both men were introduced to radical materials online including Islamic State (IS) propaganda and they were prepared to fight for IS in Syria and die as "martyrs".

Mr Azwardi said Radio HangFM was issued a warning in 2014 after a number of Islamic organisations in Batam protested against its content, calling it “divisive”. They said the content of the broadcasts violated the rules of Islam and divided the Muslim community, he added.

“We admit that maybe the religious teachers we have had on air may have been lacking in eloquence when it comes to public speaking. However, if they have said anything that could have been misconstrued, I have always corrected them,” said station manager Abu Yusuf.

“Even if one word is proven to encourage radical ideologies, we will be shut down immediately,” Mr Zein Alatas, commissioner of Radio HangFM, said to Channel NewsAsia over the phone.

“The allegations have had negative repercussions on us. Our families are traumatised and the people at the mall we are located next to are fearful of us,” he added.

HangFM has asked to meet the Singaporean consulate in Batam to provide clarification.

SINGAPORE: Demonstrators gathered outside the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta on Tuesday (Aug 23) as it was opening its doors for people to sign a condolence book for Singapore's late former President S R Nathan.

In a post on Facebook, the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta wrote that a group of demonstrators from Pemuda Panca Marga (PPM), a pro-military organisation, had gathered at the embassy to protest the "alleged mistreatment" of retired Indonesian army general Suryo Prabowo at Changi Airport on Aug 17.

Mr Suryo was stopped by officers at Singapore's Changi Airport last Wednesday as part of "screening procedures for border security", according to a statement by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA). The statement said that he was interviewed by checkpoint officers for 30 minutes, and was allowed to board his flight after the interview.

According to Indonesian media, Mr Suryo complained on social media about being "blacklisted" while in transit at Changi Airport after arriving from Fiji.

The Indonesian Military (TNI) Chief General Gatot Nurmantyo lodged a note of protest with the Singapore defence attache in Indonesia over the incident, according to Antara News. "We have written to the Foreign Ministry to lodge a note of protest with Singapore. Who knows, I may be blacklisted in Singapore anytime in the future," he told Anatara.

Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arrmanatha Nasir told The Jakarta Post that a similar name might have caused the delay. "Immigration has said that it was a routine inquiry by immigration authorities due to the common name," Ms Arrmanatha said.

Said the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta: "Despite the demonstration outside, the signing of the condolence book proceeded uninterrupted inside the embassy. We would like to extend our thanks to the Jakarta police for ensuring law and order, as well as the safety of the embassy during this period."

It added: "This was a suitable moment to recall what Mr S R Nathan had once said about the qualities needed to be a successful Foreign Service Officer of Singapore: patience, calmness, modesty, empathy and good humour. More importantly, he had also reminded us that Singapore Foreign Service Officers must have patriotism and a sense of mission; integrity and honesty; and the ability to carry on with our work, even under pressure. Timeless advice."

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Military (TNI) Chief, General Gatot Nurmantyo, has written to the Foreign Ministry to lodge a note of protest with Singapore against the action of its immigration authorities against former chief of general staff, Lieutenant General (ret) Suryo Prabowo.

"The TNI has coordinated (with other relevant agencies). Likewise, the chief of Bais (the militarys strategic intelligence agency) has lodged a note of protest with the (Singapore) defense attach in Indonesia," Nurmantyo stated after opening the fourth national karate tournament at the TNI Headquarters Sports Stadium here on Friday.

He was responding to a report that Suryo Prabowo, who had just arrived from Fiji by Fiji Airways flight FJ361, was denied entry to Singapore while he was transiting through the Changi Airport on Wednesday (Aug 17).

"We have written to the Foreign Ministry to lodge a note of protest with Singapore. Who knows I may be blacklisted in Singapore anytime in the future," he exclaimed.

He expressed regret over the fact that the Singapore immigration authorities did not explain the reason for blacklisting the former Indonesian military soldier.

"They should offer an apology and help Mr Suryo arrange his flight," he demanded.

It turned out that they did not offer any apology, he said.

"As the chief of TNI, I am not pleased with the way the Singapore government has treated the former TNI soldier," he noted.

The art of conning people in the name of religion is as old as human civilization itself, and there are certainly many religious con artists lurking in Jakarta as well.

Today, the West Jakarta Immigration Office announced that they arrested two fake Buddhist monks from China who have been going door to door to ask for donations.

The fake monks, identified as Hi Qiyan and Yua Xianhua, were arrested during a routine operation carried out by immigration officers on August 16 as they were asking for donations in West Jakarta.

The suspects claimed they were from the Tanjung Duren monastery, but the officers immediately went to check their claim out at the monastery themselves.

“According to the monastery’s elders, the monks are fake because the way they spoke and the way they dressed didn’t symbolize that they were actual monks,” said West Jakarta Immigration Office Head Abdulrahman, as quoted by Okezone today.

In addition, the monastery elders said Buddhist monks aren’t allowed to beg door to door for donations.

The immigration officers found 9,120 yen, 280 Hong Kong dollars, and Rp 240,000 on the fake monks at the time of the arrest. The two reportedly targeted ethnic Chinese citizens in West Jakarta. They were charged with 5 years in prison and a Rp 500 million fine.

Soekarno-Hatta Airport to implement random security checks on passengers from Singapore & Malaysia

http://www.upmatik.com/m/2016/08/27/a1.jpg

While Indonesia may be known as having some of the toughest drug trafficking laws in the region, neighboring Singapore and Malaysia are not exactly known for their lax stance on narcotics either. Nevertheless, authorities in Indonesia apparently view passengers coming from the two countries as being particularly likely to smuggle drugs into our archipelago and as a result are planning to subject them to greatly increased scrutiny.

The head of Soekarno-Hatta Airport’s management, PT Angkasa Pura II, recently told the media that they will tighten security inspections on passengers arriving from Singapore and Malaysia due to frequent drug smuggling attempts.

"So we discussed with the Ministry of Transportation that there are many unwanted things entering Indonesia from the two countries closest to us, Singapore and Malaysia. Therefore, Pak Minister [of Transportation Ignasius Jonan] will approve random checks for passengers from the two countries," said Budi Karya Sumadi, president of PT Angkasa Pura II, last Friday as quoted by Merdeka.

Budi said that the airport was just waiting for the decree from the Ministry of Transportation to allow them to tighten their security procedures. Transport Minister Ignasius had already expressed his support for the proposal the previous day.

In addition to allowing for random checks, the proposal would also allow airport authorities to deploy plainclothes officers to target suspicious passengers for further screening.

Commenting on media reports about the increased scrutiny on Malaysian passengers, Malaysian Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said he had not been informed about the security changes but said that Malaysia’s Immigration and Customs Departments already ensured that no illegal items were smuggled out of their country.

Despite the renewed threat of executions for drug traffickers, Indonesian authorities claim that cases of drugs being smuggled into the country have steeply risen over the last year.

BATAM (The Straits Times/ANN) - Since the arrests of the Batam militants on August 5, the Indonesian authorities have stepped up security.

Police in Batam, Indonesia have assured Singaporeans and tourists that it is safe to travel to the holiday island.

Since the arrests of the Batam militants on Aug 5, the authorities have stepped up security.

The presence of security forces may not be prominent so as not to alarm the people, but intelligence personnel in plainclothes have been deployed to guard strategic locations and stay alert, Riau Islands police chief Brigadier-General Sam Budigusdian told The Sunday Times.

"Uniformed personnel may deter potential criminals from coming, but too much of that only causes fear," he said. "And the aim of terrorists is to spread fear," he said.

Batam district police chief Senior Commissioner Helmy Santika also said that Singaporeans, who form the bulk of tourists to Batam, have been on the alert since the arrests.

"People who want to work cannot do so, those who want to go there for business cannot do that. When day-to-day life activities are affected and cause losses to the economy and everybody, that can't be good," he said.

Batam resident Siti, 45, who travels regularly to Singapore to buy used clothes and goods to resell in Batam, told The Sunday Times that a few of her friends were turned away by Singapore immigration in the past week.

"The Singapore immigration officers did not tell them why but simply rejected their entry.

"So my friends tell me not to travel to Singapore now as security is very tight. We blame the rocket gang for affecting our livelihood," she said of the Katibah GR cell that was behind the foiled terror plan.

Police officers have been holding conferences and visiting neighbourhoods to explain radicalism and extremism to residents and encourage them to report any suspicious activities they see.

Police are also working with religious leaders to help spread the word that violence is not tolerated.

"We work with community leaders to identify people coming here, not only from other countries but also Indonesians living farther away, to make sure they report their arrival to neighbourhood leaders," said Helmy.

He added that besides the six official harbours, there are nearly 200 traditional ports around Batam, a majority of which lack security features such as surveillance cameras.

Being so close to countries in the region, criminals - from traffickers to pirates to extremists - have taken advantage of this weakness for their criminal activities, he added.

Brig-Gen Sam Budigusdian said he had met the Singapore authorities, who he said had thanked the Riau Islands police and the Indonesian government for their efforts to maintain security on the island.

"We agreed that Singapore and Indonesia, particularly in the Riau Islands, have very good relations in terms of economy and culture," he said. "We can guarantee that Batam is safe."

Batam community leader Najmi, 40, said the anti-terror raids lasted only a few hours.

"Of course, everyone was shocked by the raids, but police have handled it very well and the operation was over quickly," he said.

"We want everyone to know that we in Batam reject and condemn all radical activities."

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesian authorities detained seven people in northern Sumatra island on Saturday on suspicion of attacking several Buddhist temples the previous night, officials said.

A spokeswoman for North Sumatra provincial police said the seven were part of a mob that damaged at least three temples and other property in the town of Tanjung Balai, near Indonesia's fourth-biggest city Medan. No one was injured.

Indonesia is a Muslim-majority nation but has a sizable ethnic Chinese minority, many of whom are Buddhist. The country has a history of anti-Chinese violence, most recently in the late 1990s amid the political and economic crisis that brought down authoritarian ruler Suharto.

But police officials denied Friday's attack was aimed at the Chinese community.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjNXqDCXvAg

"This was just a (dispute between) individuals," said North Sumatra Police Spokeswoman Rina Sari Ginting, adding the situation was now under control.

Indonesia, where the majority of the population practices a moderate form of Islam, sees sporadic attacks on religious minorities by Muslim hardliners but authorities are quick to crack down on any violent incidents.

Hundreds of security personnel were deployed late last year when a Muslim mob burned down a number of churches in conservative Aceh province, saying they didn't have the right building permits.

It appears that some people hate Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, an Indonesian of minority Chinese descent, so much due to his race that his name is unfortunately being used as a racial slur.

Recently, a Facebook user by the name of Andrew BudiKusuma posted about a horrid experience riding the TransJakarta bus on Friday evening. According to him, he was attacked by three to four men for no reason other than the fact that he is Chinese Indonesian.

Andrew detailed in his post that he got on a TransJakarta bus from Kuningan Barat at 8:30pm on Friday. His would be attackers got on the bus from Semanggi at 9pm and immediately threw racial slurs at him, saying, “Ahok, you’re Ahok right?”

When the bus reached the JCC bus stop, the attackers allegedly shoved Andrew out of the bus and started beating him. Luckily, other passengers grabbed Andrew and pulled him back into the bus, leaving the attackers at the bus stop. In his post, Andrew uploaded a photo of the damaged lips he sustained from the beating, though he did not reveal if he received further injuries.

Andrew noted that the TransJakarta officer on the bus did not try to stop the beating either out of fear or because he was an accomplice of the attackers. The officer also allegedly wasn’t helpful when Andrew was trying to file a report and obtain the CCTV footage of the attack to be given to the authorities as evidence.

Thankfully, Andrew did obtain CCTV footage of the incident at the JCC bus stop, and he wrote in his post that he plans to report the incident to the Jakarta Metro Police tomorrow.

Andrew’s Facebook post has been gaining a lot of traction over the weekend and he seems to have gained the support of the nation’s equality-seeking citizens, as comments poured in expressing sympathy for Andrew and condemnation for the attack.

We hope Andrew finds justice and that the culprits are found and punished accordingly. While we may have come a long way from when Chinese Indonesian minorities became targets of discrimination and brutality in the 1998 riots (having a Chinese Indonesian governor of Jakarta is testament to that), minority race groups are sadly still being discriminated against in Indonesia, thereby putting irony in the fact that “Unity in Diversity” is one of the country’s founding principles.

Indonesia is considering a national ban on the production, consumption and distribution of alcohol. The news came as a surprise to international media, which led to some interesting headlines.

While Indonesia has legally banned alcohol in Papua and Surabaya, the country is now mulling over the possibility of nationally prohibiting drinks containing more than one percent alcohol.

The proposed law was introduced by two Islamic political parties, The United Development Party (PPP) and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS). As stated in the draft, both parties wish to “protect citizens from the negative impacts of alcoholic beverages, to raise awareness of the dangers of the beverages, and to ensure order and peace in society, free from disturbances caused by consumers”.

But if approved, the ban might jeopardize the future of the country’s tourism industry. Speaking to The Jakarta Post last week, Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) chairman Hariyadi Sukamdani expressed her concern for the proposed law:

“If the bill is passed, our business will be done. The tourists, who mostly come from Europe, drink alcohol all the time. It will be very inconvenient for them if they can’t find alcohol.”

The news of the bill has caused quite a stir among the international media.

UK media The Daily Mail, for instance, reported the news with the headline: Time to Rethink that Bali Getaway? Indonesia’s Radical proposal to ban ALCOHOL could ruin the popular holiday island for tourists.

Similarly, Malaysia’s Malaysia Sun came up with: Indonesia’s radical proposal to ban alcohol could ruin the popular tourist hotspot.

While some reports have come from Asia and Europe, most of the media reports have originated from Australia, a nation that has been known to be a devoted tourist to Bali.

Perth Now broke the news with a rather direct approach to readers with The party could be over in Bali as Indonesia considers banning alcohol. The same goes for The West Australian with What, no Bintang? Fears over Bali booze ban. And The Queensland Times also made use of Indonesia’s most well-known alcohol brand in its headline No Bintangs? Bali could be hit by national booze ban.

BATAM, Indonesia (The Jakarta Post/ANN) - The travel warning for Singapore may affect tourism in Riau Islands.

Travel warnings issued by several countries for Singapore over the spread of the Zika virus could have a negative impact on tourism in Riau Islands as most foreign tourists enter the province through the city-state, officials said on Wednesday.

On Tuesday the United States joined South Korea, Australia and Taiwan by issuing travel warnings for citizens visiting Singapore following the discovery of Zika infections, local media reported.

Most tourists visit Riau Island's famous destinations of Batam, Bintan and Karimun through Singapore, the Association of Indonesian Tour and Travel Agencies’ Batam office head, Andika, said on Wednesday.

The impact of the travel warnings would be seen in the next 15 days, he said, adding that despite the warnings, people who had booked trips would be unlikely to cancel. However, those who were only thinking of going to Singapore might change their minds.

"We hope Singapore can soon handle Zika virus issues. The longer the problem, it will put us in a more difficult situation," Andika told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

Riau Islands Tourism Agency head Guntur Sakti said around 99 per cent of Riau Islands’ annual 2 million foreign visitors entered via Singapore. Tourists from South Korea and Taiwan are among the top foreign visitors to the province after those from Singapore, Malaysia and India.

With the spread of Zika in Singapore, Guntur feared the province's target of 2.6 million foreign tourists this year might not be reached. Aside from the virus, the crackdown on a terrorist cell in Batam in July could also contribute to lower visitors numbers, Guntur added.

Jakarta - The Indonesian government has issued a travel advisory for Singapore on Wednesday (31/08) amid an outbreak of the Zika virus, which has already infected 82 people in the city-state.

Health Minister Nila F. Moeloek coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before the government issued the warning.

The minister advised Indonesians, especially women who are pregnant and those trying to get pregnant, to avoid traveling to Singapore.

"If [the visit] is urgent, what can we say? But if it can be postponed, it should. Pregnant women must carefully consider the risks before visiting Singapore, because their children could be born with microcephaly," Nila said.

Microcephaly is a rare birth defect where babies are born with significantly smaller heads than those of other children of the same age and sex. Brazil has reported more than 1,800 cases of microcephaly this year, as Zika continues to spread in the South American country.

In May, Singapore saw its first Zika virus case when a 48-year-old foreigner, who is a permanent resident in the city-state, was diagnosed with the disease after returning from Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Nila said the Indonesian government is deeply concerned about a possible Zika outbreak after the neighboring country saw the number of cases double to 82 in just one month.

"The government will also ask people who are arriving [in Indonesia] from Singapore to complete a health alert card. We have to protect our citizens, because this virus has become very mobile," the minister said. "I have instructed health offices, especially in Batam [Riau Islands province] to take blood samples from people [arriving from Singapore] who show signs of a fever. If they do not pass the health check, we will summon them."

On Tuesday, Singaporean authorities continued to inspect thousands of homes in seven parts of the city, including five foreign worker dormitories. According to unconfirmed reports, there is at least one Indonesian citizen among those infected.

"Until today, we have not received any reports about Indonesians in Singapore who are infected with the virus," Nila said.

Zika cases have been reported in at least 45 countries, prompting the World Health Organization to issue a global public health emergency.

"People need to be aware that this disease is spread by mosquitoes, in the same way the Aedes aegypti, mosquito spreads dengue fever. People need to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes," the health minister said.

Stepping Up Health Security

The government is expected to take several steps to prevent the virus from spreading to the archipelago. Health scanners have been installed at some seaports and airports that are the main entry points for people arriving from Singapore. Health officials and immigration officers are now cooperating to check all passengers to prevent Zika from entering the country.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said she has been coordinating with the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights and the Health Ministry to step up health security at Indonesian ports of entry.

"I have received an initial report from our ambassador in Singapore. Since then, I have made some arrangements with the health minister and the justice minister," Retno said. "All ports of entry will be equipped with health detectors for passengers coming from Singapore."

Australia, Taiwan and South Korea have also issued travel advisories for Singapore over to the Zika virus.

The outbreak and the warnings come as a potential blow to tourism in one of the world's busiest travel hubs, which is already struggling to recover from a slump amid tepid global growth.

BATAM (THE JAKARTA POST/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A Singaporean national, Mohamed Isa bin Omar, 67, was found dead in his hotel room in Batam, Riau Islands, on Tuesday (Sept 6).

His body was found by the employees of the Lai Lai Hotel in Batam where he was staying. A room service worker had reported to his supervisor and then police about Omar's disappearance after he had not been seen for a few days having stayed at the hotel for the last two weeks.

Since Tuesday morning a rotting odour started to emanate from his room on the fourth floor of the small hotel, receptionist Lindawati said.

"We decided to break open his room with police in the afternoon. He was dead when we found him and part of his body had been rotting," she said adding that Omar had booked for a long stay.

Police investigators then conducted a crime scene investigation and brought the body to Bhayangkara Police Hospital for an autopsy.

Batu Ampar Police's crime investigations unit chief Adj. Comr. Kahardani said the police are still investigating the cause of death.

Ten male refugees, nine from Afghanistan and one from Pakistan, have been arrested on Batam Island for allegedly working as prostitutes, according to Indonesian immigration officials.

Also arrested was an Indonesian citizen, identified by his initials BS, who allegedly acted as the men’s pimp.

The director general of Immigration at the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, Ronny Franky Sompie, said the eleven men had been arrested after they had received reports about them from the public. Supposedly the men were charging up to Rp 20 million ($1,500) for their services.

According to Ronny, the reports said the men looked for female Indonesian customers at a fitness center.

"There, communication and interaction occurred and there were cases related to sex," Ronny said on Wednesday as quoted by Tempo.

Batam Immigration Office Chief Agus Wijaya said that the men’s illicit activities were also revealed through ads posted onto social media. He said officers investigated the ads over the last three weeks before apprehending the the ten gigolos and their pimp. The arrests took place from mid-August to early September.

Immigration officials said that some of the men had already registered with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and were awaiting for placements in other countries.

The ten refugees are currently in holding at the Batam Immigration detention center for further questioning, while BS is being questioned by the local police.

There are hundreds of refugees in Indonesia who fled persecution and war in their own countries and ended up in legal limbo after being unable to continue their journeys, unable to legally work or resettle until they have been given a placement in another country by the UNHCR.

While National Narcotics Agency (BNN) chief Budi Waseso has been ramping up his rhetoric this week, calling for Indonesia to step up its war on drugs by following the lead of Philippine's President Rodrigo Duterte and instituting a shoot-on-sight policy for dealers, the police have also acknowledged this that many of its own members are involved in the country’s drug trade, either as users or dealers.

According to Commissioner Irianto of the National Police’s internal affairs division, the number of police officers found to be involved with narcotics is already higher than in 2015, with 118 officers having tested positive for drug use in 2016. Out of those, 116 have tested positive for methamphetamines and two tested positive for ecstasy.

"Of the 118, five are dealers and 113 are users," he said on Wednesday as quoted by CNN Indonesia.

Irianto did not go into any details as to how those officers were punished, but stated that the police followed strict procedures to monitor their officers and educate them about the perils of becoming involved.

Irianto also acknowledged that some officers had been found to be criminally mishandling narcotics cases, including taking bribes from criminals and selling off drugs collected as evidence.

Police Ombudsman committee member Adrianus Meliala argued that there needed to be heavier penalties for policemen involved in the drug trade than facing dishonorable discharge and criminal charges. He said the temptation to profit off of the drug trade was very high for police officers, who generally have low salaries, and that only by giving them even harsher criminal penalties than civilians can create a proper deterrent effect.

Jakarta obviously has crazy, terrible, soul crushing traffic. But do we have, as some have claimed in the past, “the worst traffic in the world”? Well, not according to the results of a new report by traffic app Waze, which shows there are 8 cities where drivers are even unhappier than in the Indonesian capital, including a few other urban centers in our archipelago.
Waze, a traffic app which collects real-time traffic data and reports from users across the globe, recently released the results of their second annual “Waze Driver Satisfaction Index”, which measures satisfaction based on a number of factors including traffic, safety and road quality.

Waze collected data from users in 38 countries and 235 cities. Based on that information, Jakarta came in #178 out of 186 for all of the cities ranked (there were only 186 places due to tied scores).
The index ranking is based on the average score of each factor used to determine driver satisfaction, and each factor is rated on a 1-10 scale, with ten equalling totally satisfied and one equaling miserable.
Jakarta earned a 3.37 rating in overall satisfaction, showing drivers here are pretty far towards the miserable side. That number was mainly brought down by the capital’s rock-bottom rating of just 0.6 in the traffic category. Surprisingly, Jakarta somehow scored a 9.8 in the safety category, but we guess it’s hard to get into accidents when you’re stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
So which are the eight cities that are unfortunate to have even unhappier drivers than Jakarta?

178: Jakarta, Indonesia; 3.37
179: Guatemala, Guatemala; 3.36
180: Cali, Colombia; 3.22
181: Surbaya, Indonesia; 3.14
182: Bandung, Indonesia; 3.00
183: Denpasar, Indonesia; 2.89
184: San Salvador, El Salvador, 2.85
185: Bogor, Indonesia; 2.15
186: Cebu, Philippines; 1.15

That's right, according to Waze Surabaya, Bandung and Denpasar all have more miserable drivers than Jakarta. On the other end of the scale, Valence, France had the highest driver satisfaction rating with a score of 8.81.
You can explore the rankings and data from Waze’s Driver Satisfaction Index on their interactive website.

Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa has called on Batam authorities to thoroughly investigate an alleged underage male prostitution ring involving migrants from Afghanistan and Pakistan as part of the state’s efforts to protect children from prostitution networks.

The minister said she had met and spoken with Batam, Rempang and Galang (Barelang) Police officials to more deeply explore the matter.

“We have to separate two issues in this matter: namely immigration and prostitution problems. On immigration-related issues, it has been handled by the Law and Human Rights Ministry and Foreign Affairs Ministry, but for prostitution-related aspects, I have coordinated with Barelang Police officials,” said Khofifah on Saturday.

“I’ve been informed they have investigated this case and the [alleged] perpetrators have been arrested.”

Speaking on the sidelines of her visit to Batam on Saturday, Khofifah said investigation and law enforcement were part of the efforts to establish a layered alertness so that no boy or girl becomes trapped by a prostitution network.

“Currently, we are preparing anticipatory measures to protect not only girls but also boys from falling into a prostitution network. This is because child prostitution syndicates have begun to target male victims,” said Khofifah.

On Sept. 6, Batam Immigration officials revealed the alleged involvement of 10 migrants in a male prostitution ring offering sex services not only to female but also to male clients in Batam.

Khofifah said the government was aiming to close 99 prostitution complexes in areas across Indonesia, including one in Batam, by 2019.

The Indonesian government remains confident that a target of 12 million foreign tourist visitors nationwide will be achieved by the end of 2016.

Hiramsyah Thaib who works in tourism development at the Ministry of Tourism, said in Nusa Dua, Bali on Wednesday, August 31, 2016, that a total of 5,291,583 foreign tourists came to Indonesia in the first six months of the year, exceeding a stated target of 5.1 million visitors.

Quoted by Beritabali.com, Hiramsyah said, “At this time, the number of foreign tourists for the first half of 2016 has achieved 44% of the annual target of 12 million people.”

Looking back at 2015, Thaib said tourist arrivals were pleasing, achieving 10.4 million foreign visitors, a total that exceed the revised government target and generated US$12.3 billion in foreign exchange. Meanwhile, domestic tourist trips in 2015 totaled 259 million journeys.

Data supplied by the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) shows US$858.67 million in new investments were secured during the first six-months of 2016. This was comprised of US$791.99 million if foreign investments and US$66.68 million in domestic projects.

When investment is compared to the same period in 2015, investments are up 69.78% in 2016. Foreign investments during semester one of 2016 increased 121.5% when compared to 2015.

A long time ago, there was a giant dragon. His name was Baruklinting. One day, one of the gods asked him to take nine shepherds as an offering for the gods.

Then Baruklinting went to a mountain. He opened his big mouth every day. He hoped that shepherds would enter his big mouth. In the village, ten shepherds took their cows to the grass field on the mountain. They didn’t know there was a dragon. One of the shepherds was very skinny and dirty. His friends always made fun of him. The skinny shepherd never got angry. He just kept quiet and left his friends every time they laughed at him.

It was a very hot day. All shepherds were very tired. They wanted to find a cool place to rest. The skinny shepherd had already found a nice place to rest. It was under a big tree. The place was cool so he did not feel hot anymore. His friends were jealous.

“Let’s steal his place,” said one of them.

“Yes! Let’s do it!” other shepherds agreed.

They took some mud and threw it to the skinny shepherds. The skinny shepherd was so sad. Still, he did not get angry. He just left them and walked away.

“Ha ha ha. Go now! You skinny boy!” they laughed at him.

Suddenly the sky became dark. There were a thunder and lightning. Heavy rain began to fall. The shepherds did not want to get wet. They had to find a better place. They finally found a big cave. The cave had sharp rocks inside it. All shepherds did not know that the cave was actually the mouth of the giant dragon. Yes, it was Baruklinting’s mouth! When all shepherds were inside the ‘cave’, suddenly one of them pushed the skinny shepherd away.

“Go out! You don’t belong here! It’s only for the big boys!”

"But it was raining outside,” said skinny shepherd.

"I don’t care!” then they pushed him.

Right after the skinny shepherd was outside the cave, it suddenly closed! Yes, Baruklinting just finished his job to get nine shepherds for the gods.

When the skinny shepherds saw the cave closed, he ran away! He ran as fast as he could. He then told the villagers about the cave and the dragon. The villagers then went to the mountain to kill the dragon. But when they arrived, the dragon had already gone.

From that day on, the village was named Kesongo Village. Songo meant nine for the nine shepherds who were eaten by Baruklinting Dragon.

The full picture of who would be competing in the 2017 Jakarta Governor’s election did not become clear until late last Friday, the last day that candidates could officially register with the election committee. After the ruling PDI-P party announced on Tuesday that they would be backing current Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama in his reelection bid, rival parties were left scrambling to find worthy challengers to the incumbent.

Eventually support coalesced around two figures who were rarely discussed in the run-up to the candidate announcements. The so-called Cikeas Coalition, made up of the Democratic Party, PPP, PKB and PAN, decided to support Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, the 38-year-old son of former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, paired with current Jakarta Deputy Governor for Tourism and Culture Sylviana Murni. Gerindra and PKS went with former education minister Anies Baswedan paired with businessman Sandiaga Uno.

While Ahok has strong poll numbers, a proven track record and the backing of the ruling party, the three-way race could still be a fiercely fought one. There are already virulently anti-Ahok activists who have resorted to attacks on his race and religion to try and bring the governor down. If such attacks are used against Ahok by his rivals, the race could get very ugly indeed.

But here’s a good sign that next year’s election will be fairly fought on the issues by candidates who mutually respect one another - a selfie featuring all six gubernatorial candidates smiling together.

http://i.footio.com/images/2016/09/26/8epZPawMNQspFMdiheHg400.jpg

The selfie was taken on Saturday at Mintohardjo Navy Hospital, where each candidate had to undergo a mandatory health check-up as part of the registration process. It was posted to social media by Anies and his campaign. Here’s the selfie again from a different angle.

http://i.footio.com/images/2016/09/26/a7.jpg

Of course it’s hard to tell from a single photo what the tone of this election will be like. But we like to think this was more that just a photo-op for the candidates - that they actually do respect their political rivals and will make this election one about ideas, policies and how to make Jakarta a better city for everybody.

A member of Indonesia's notoriously corrupt police is to be honoured for refusing to accept bribes during his 40-year career, instead scavenging garbage to supplement his meagre salary, an official said on Thursday (June 30).

While many countries give awards for police bravery, Indonesian authorities have decided to honour policeman Seladi, 57, after he became a media sensation when the story of his determination not to accept kickbacks emerged.

The police in Indonesia are considered one of the country's most graft-ridden institutions. They are accused of regularly extorting bribes from the public, being involved in the drugs trade, and have been embroiled in numerous high-profile corruption cases.

But father-of-three Seladi insists he always refused bribes despite earning only the equivalent of about US$400 a month and facing much temptation, as he worked in the department that issued driving licences in the city of Malang, on Java island.

"In the driving licence department, there is a lot of temptation," he told AFP.
"Many people want to give me money or gifts so they can pass their driving test. But I always refused - my parents taught me not to take bribes."

He was unable to afford his own house, meaning he had to live with his wife and children at the home of his parents-in-law.

In 2004, Seladi began scavenging from garbage dumps to top up his state income, earning on average an extra US$5 a day, mostly by selling on recyclable items.

East Java province police spokesman Argo Yuwono said Seladi would be honoured at a ceremony on Indonesia's national police day on Friday for not accepting bribes, and for his dedication in supporting his family by doing extra work.

The spokesman did not say what exactly Seladi would receive.

Indonesia was ranked 88th out of 168 countries and territories in NGO Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index last year. A number one ranking represents the least corrupt.

Tourism officials say it will deter people from visiting the island nation.

Farewell, Bintang? Au revoir, Anker? The Indonesian House of Representatives is considering a bill that bans producing, consuming, or distributing beverages that contain more than one percent alcohol throughout the country. But that's not all it would curb: Some officials believe that the ban, which is up for a vote in the coming weeks, could effectively kill the local tourism industry. While many of the nearly 11 million people who visit Indonesia annually want to relax on beaches or have an Elizabeth Gilbert-style Eat, Pray, Love experience, others come to take part in resort culture on islands like Bali, which unlike the rest of the country, is predominantly Hindu and has looser laws about alcohol. Hariyadi Sukamdani, head of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), told the Jakarta Post that "If the bill is passed, our business will be done. No matter how beautiful the country is, if [tourists] can't find alcohol, they won't want to come here."

This isn't the first time that Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country, has struggled to find a balance between economic growth and adherence to local customs. In May, Indonesia passed a law blocking the sale of beer in convenience stores and other small neighborhood shops. Although that meant that it was still possible to buy beer, wine, and spirits in large supermarkets and at bars and restaurants, it signaled a likelihood that officials might take additional steps to limit alcohol's availability throughout the country. At that point, Bali tourism office head A.A. Gede Yuniartha Putra expressed concern that his island would be the hardest hit by the new rulings, since their economy depends so heavily on travelers coming from North America, Australia, and Europe: "Foreigners like to have a drink when they are here. This is going to seriously affect tourism."

You’re driving down the highway and suddenly you look up at the advertising billboard overlooking the road. Rather than the usual commercial for that drink or car you’ll never buy, it’s playing porn. Japanese porn.

This is what greeted drivers passing through Jakarta, Indonesia, last month.

On the large advertising screen, in place of an actual commercial or video, someone’s browser was displaying — which just so happened to be showing a clip from a Japanese AV.

http://img.slbii.com/images/2016/10/05/jakarta-rush-hour-japanese-porn-advertising-screen-billboard.jpg

Fortunately for the morals of the city (and unfortunately for the horny drivers), what was actually shown seemed to be fairly tame because what could be seen of the browser was cut off.

But there was no doubt it was pornographic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jndc5QRyzjo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzKmZvp0lLI

This happened on September 30th in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, during the rush hour on a 24-square-meter (260-square-foot) LED billboard. Jakarta is known for having the worst rush-hour congestion in the world, so you can bet this unexpected AV screening got a big audience. (We’ve also read that the porn played during 1pm and 2pm, not the rush hour. If anyone can confirm which is correct, please let us know.)

The title of the video was “Watch Tokyo Hot”, which surely should have sent off alarm signals to whoever was in charge in the display. (We use the past tense on purpose: you can bet that in a majority Muslim nation like Indonesia, that person no longer has that job.) It was transmitted to the screen from someone’s personal computer.

The power was eventually cut on the screen. Police are now investigating if this was a simple human error, a deliberate act, or hacking.

Lestari Ady Wiryono, head of public information for South Jakarta, said: “The South Jakarta administration takes this matter seriously”.

In Indonesia, all porn is illegal and even public acts of affection are legally dubious since the passing of the Bill against Pornography and Pornoaction.

If it was just a mistake, it reminds us of other amusing fails. For example, in 2014, a Thai math textbook published accidentally used a Japanese porn star on the cover of one of its books. Then in 2015, a Taiwanese educational company somehow sent a porn film to a kindergarten in Japan.

Ipda Nyariman, who was the chief of the Karangsembung sub-precinct in Kebumen, Central Java, was found dead after apparently hanging himself in his office yesterday.

National Police Spokesman Boy Rafli Amar announced to the media today that Nyariman’s motive for his apparent suicide is still being investigated.
However, based on information gathered by the local media, Nyariman chose to end his own life after allegedly failing to return bribe money he had received previously.

Nyariman allegedly received a Rp 250 million bribe from Sudiman, a police officer from another precinct, so that Nyariman could pull some strings to make sure that Sudiman’s son graduated from the police academy.

However, Sudiman’s son failed at the academy and Nyariman had apparently already used up the bribe money, so he was unable to return it to Sudiman.

“The matter was mediated with the precinct chief, head of human resources and internal affairs. As promised, the sub-precinct chief was due to return the money to Sudiman today. But he ended up hanging himself,” said a police officer at the Kebumen precinct who refused to disclose his identity, as quoted by Warta Kota yesterday.

What is perhaps as troubling as Nyariman’s suicide is the allegation that many higher ups in the police force knew about the bribe and yet did not act accordingly to punish Nyariman and Sudiman. It’s a disturbing sign of just how much pervasive bribery and corruption might be amongst our country’s law enforcers.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says it will support whatever decision the Indonesian government takes concerning refugees and asylum seekers in Batam so long as the policy adheres to human rights principles.

The UNHCR, however, will ask the government to thoroughly consider if they want to place refugees on a single island, as proposed by the Batam administration.

UNHCR senior protection officer Jeffrey Savage told The Jakarta Post in Batam on Friday that he had heard of the idea to move the refugees to an island outside Batam.

"There are suggestions to put the refugees on one island. But the UNHCR asks that the idea be studied more carefully. It could create a lot of problems and conflict. First of all, they are from 48 different nationalities," Savage said after meeting with local government officials in Batam to discuss the issue of refugees.

The Batam administration sent a letter to Jakarta asking the central government to remove refugees from Batam, saying that their presence had created problems such as making public parks in Batam look dirty.

Batam spokesperson Ardiwinata said on Friday that Mayor Muhammad Rudi had suggested placing all the refugees on a single island outside Batam.

“We have a success story with Galang Island, where we dealt with Vietnamese refugees. We still have the facilities they used there,” he said.

Ardi said placing the refugees on one island would make it easier for the administration to supervise them. The proposal would also, according to Ardi, “maintain Batam’s local wisdom.”

“We have hundreds of islands here and some are not inhabited,” he went on to say.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has defended the introduction of castration and the death penalty for paedophiles.

His parliament last week voted to introduce the tough new measures and the leader has spoken of the country"s "no compromise" approach to sex crimes.

"Our constitution respects human rights, but when it comes to sexual crimes there is no compromise.

"In my opinion, chemical castration, if we enforce it consistently, will reduce sex crimes and wipe them out over time," he said.

Indonesia"s President Joko Widodo has introduced a series of tough punishments for child sex offenders through an emergency decree, including chemical castration and the death penalty

The emergency decree was introduced following an outcry in the aftermath of the fatal gang-rape of a schoolgirl.

Widodo defended introducing chemical castration, a decision that has sparked anger from human rights activists and the Indonesian Doctors Association, which has said its members will not perform the treatment.

He told the BBC the government "will hand out the maximum penalty" for sex crimes.

Twelve of the men accused of raping and murdering a 14-year-old schoolgirl in Bengkulu Province, Indonesia in April were seen hiding their faces as they emerged from a police cell guided by a plain clothed officer

Yuyun (above right in a family photograph released by her mother) was walking home from school when she was killed

Indonesia is among a small group of places worldwide which use the measure, including Poland and some states in the USA.

In 2011 South Korea became the first Asian country to legalise the treatment.

Chemical castration involves using drugs to reduce libido and sex drive.

Widodo was spurred into action after the murder and gang-rape in April of a 14-year-old girl Yuyun.

She was set upon by a gang of drunken men and boys as she walked home from school on the western island of Sumatra.

The leader of the gang was sentenced to death last month after being found guilty of premeditated murder, a crime already punishable by death before the new laws were introduced.

Other members of the gang have been jailed.

Jokowi asks citizens to anonymously report officials asking for bribes through new hotline and website

http://www.picturevip.com/x/clean/images/2016/10/24/32T6i.jpg

President Joko Widodo was voted into office in 2014 largely based on promises that he would be a dedicated reformist who would clean up the corruption endemic to Indonesian bureaucracy. In his first two years as president, many anti-corruption activists have been disappointed with Jokowi’s lack of movement on that front and his weak support for the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), but in the past few weeks the president has made a very public commitment to stamping out bureaucratic corruption - particularly the levying of illegal fines and bribes for government services.

The practice of pungli (short for pungutan liar or “illegal payments”) is the target of the new Saber Pungli Cleansweep taskforce, signed into law via presidential decree last Friday. The decree gives the taskforce a legal umbrella to gather intelligence, investigate and prevent pungli, and even gives them the power to arrest officials unilaterally.
An important part of the Saber Pungli program is that it allows members of the public to be able report corrupt officials confidentially through a website, hotline or even SMS.

http://www.picturevip.com/x/clean/images/2016/10/24/8YPgJ.jpg

"If you see or experience extortion, report directly to the website: www.saberpungli.id, SMS to 1193 or call the call center 193. The identity of the complainant will be kept confidential."

A few weeks ago, Jokowi was present for the arrest of several high ranking civil servants at the transportation ministry accused of levying illegal fees for licensing requests. Visibly angry, the president said that such bureaucratic corruption must not be allowed to exist if Indonesian is to become a modern, economically competitive country.

British banker kills 2 Indonesian women in HongKong before forcing them to lick toilet as he sawed through neck

https://upload.vstanced.com/images/2016/10/26/OSI.jpg

Jurors were warned by a Hong Kong judge that former British banker Rurik Jutting filmed the torture and killing of the two Indonesian women he is accused of murdering two years ago as the trial got underway on Monday.

Jutting, 31, pleaded not guilty to murder on grounds of "diminished responsibility", though the victims' bodies were found in his luxury high rise apartment.

The 31-year-old, who studied at Cambridge University and Winchester College, one of Britain's most famous and oldest private schools, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter, and to a third charge of preventing lawful burial of a body.

During the jury selection, Deputy High Court Judge Michael Stuart-Moore warned potential jurors that if they were unable to cope with viewing extreme violence they should not take part.

"There is a particularly horrifying aspect of the case.

One of the victims was subject to extreme cruelty and violence," the judge said, explaining that a number of horrifying and extreme color photographs could be presented during the trial.

“The defendant even recorded on his iPhone the torture inflicted on the first victim before she died."

The judge said the defense and prosecution were largely in agreement over the physical evidence, but the dispute may lie in psychiatric and psychological evidence provided by the defense to determine whether it was a case of murder or manslaughter.

Looking trim and dressed in a dark blue shirt, Jutting was clean shaven with short cut hair, in stark contrast to his initial court appearances when he looked heavily overweight and wore a thick dark beard.

The lurid nature of the case has cast a harsh light on the seamy side of Hong Kong, offering an insight into how some wealthy professionals flash their cash on sex, drugs and alcohol.

Jutting who previously worked at Bank of America Corp in Hong Kong, was accused of murder in October 2014 after police found the bodies of Sumarti Ningsih, 23, and Seneng Mujiasih, 26, in his apartment. Both women's throats were slit.

Ningsih's remains were discovered inside a suitcase on his balcony and the body of Mujiasih was found lying inside with wounds to her neck and buttocks, authorities said.

"HIGHLY GRAPHIC" VIDEO

Before the jury selection, Jutting's barrister Tim Owen explained the argument for diminished responsibility was based on the grounds of a personality disorder.

Deputy High Court Judge Stuart-Moore said "there isn't a disease here, it is a personality disorder."

Prosecutor John Reading stated that psychopathic behavior was not a reason for diminished responsibility, setting up the arguments both parties will make during the trial.

Once the jury was confirmed by midday on Monday, the judge explained they would have to decide if it is a case of murder or manslaughter.

The jury will view 30 minutes of "highly graphic" video on Tuesday that will not viewable for the public in the courtroom, though the sound will still be audible.

Hong Kong, a former British colony, still retains a British legal system after being handed back to China in 1997. Jutting's case is being tried in English.

The case is being closely watched by the 300,000-strong migrant domestic helpers community in Hong Kong. Outside the High Court, about a dozen of their representatives held placards reading “Justice for Wanchai Murder Victim” and “Stop Violence”.

Bank of America has previously said Jutting was an employee but it has not said why he left or given any timeframe.

Jutting was found fit to plea after undergoing psychiatric assessment at the end of 2014 after being charged for the double murder.

According to contemporaries at Cambridge University, Jutting attended Peterhouse, the oldest college, and was president of the Cambridge University History society. He was also a cross-country runner and a rower.

Jutting was charged with the murders of Sumarti Ningsih (left) and Seneng Mujiasih (right), whose bodies were found in his upmarket apartment near Hong Kong"s red-light district

https://upload.vstanced.com/images/2016/10/26/OSO.jpg

The sex worker, who was in Hong Kong on a tourist visa, had a five-year-old son living with her parents in Indonesia.

Miss Indonesia chooses Clinton, Miss Philippines chooses Trump, Miss Indonesia wins Miss Grand International 2016

Ariska Putri Pertiwi being crowned Miss Grand International 2016.

Ariska Putri Pertiwi became the first Indonesian to win a major international beauty pageant after being crowned Miss Grand International 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The ladies of Southeast Asia dominated the finals of the pageant as Ariska beat Miss Philippines Nicole Cordoves and Miss Thailand Supaporn Malisorn, who came second and third respectively.

http://i63.tinypic.com/3345ao7.jpg

Ariska also won the Best National Costume award, the outcome of which was determined by online votes.

The Miss Grand International pageant expects its winners to be role models for the contest’s ‘Stop the War and Violence’ campaign. It’s probably quite relevant then that during the final question round, the contestants were asked whether they would choose Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump to help them stop war and violence, to which Ariska answered Clinton. Miss Philippines chose Trump (for which she was apparently booed by the audience).

With her victory, Ariska became the fourth Miss Grand International and the first winner from Asia. She is also the first Indonesian to win a major international beauty pageant.

The government has enacted several policies in recent weeks to help battle the widespread perception of corruption within the bureaucracy and law enforcement agencies. Last week, President Joko Widodo signed into law the Saber Pungli (Illegal Payment Clean Sweep) Taskforce to battle bribery and extortion along with a new website and hotline through which citizens could report official corruption confidentially.

But apparently there are those within the ranks of the Police who feel that people need more of an incentive to go through the potentially risky process of filing reports on corruption. Which is why they are going to offer a Rp 5 million cash reward to citizens who do.

Central Java Police Regional Oversight Commissioner Bambang Prayitno said the reward would be given to those to report on case of civil servants soliciting illegal fees for administrative services.

"People who report to [a member of the police] that they have been solicited for a bribe will be rewarded by the police with Rp 5 million," Bambang said on the sidelines of a discussion about extortion in Semarang on Tuesday as quoted by Kompas.

Bambang did not elaborate on how exactly the reward program would work, such as whether the accused official would have to be proven guilty before the reward was given. But for a possible Rp 5 million, it is likely that the program will be successful in getting many more people to try and report on corruption, which has got to be a good thing, right?

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has ordered the security forces to stay alert and work professionally to anticipate a protest rally to be staged on November 4, 2016.

After attending the commemoration of World Saving Day 2016, at the Jakarta Convention Center here on Monday, Jokowi said that demonstration is a democratic right of citizens, but they do not have the right to impose their will or create damages.

A number of Islamic organizations have planned to stage a big rally on November 4 against Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) who they accused of blasphemy and insulting the Koran.

Jokowi said the government would guarantee the right to free speech, but it would also give priority to public order and security.

"I have ordered the security forces to stay alert and perform their duties in a professional manner to overcome any anarchy perpetrated by any one," the president remarked.

Earlier on Sunday, National Police Chief General Tito Karnavian urged the people not to be easily provoked with regard to the Islamic mass organizations planned demonstration.

Karnavian explained that the rally could be exploited by certain elements for political purposes ahead of the Jakarta gubernatorial election next February.

"Do not be easily provoked or involve in violence. Please do not be anarchic," he said, expressing hope that the demonstrators would carry out the rally peacefully.

Tanjung Pinang, Riau Islands (ANTARA News) - Tanjung Pinang Mayor Lis Darmansyah said the city has a new icon in the form of Gonggong, which is also expected to become the main attraction for those visiting the capital of Riau Islands.

"Gonggong is a typical Tanjung Pinangs kind of shell that is not found elsewhere. So, hopefully, tourists, both domestic and foreign, will find it easy to remember," the mayor stated here on Saturday.

Surrounded by waters, Tanjung Pinang is rich in marine biota, including the rare "strombus turturella" shells, locally called Gonggong.

Such sea shells are usually processed into delicious foods, a cuisine Tanjung Pinang is famous for.

The rare Gonggong shells are expected to attract tourists both from the country and overseas, the mayor remarked.

"The economy continues to grow and Tanjung Pinang with its new travel destinations will also continue to grow," he underlined, adding that the locals strongly support the governments efforts to develop the city, especially in the tourism sector.

The people of Tanjung Pinang are very active in helping the government, especially in developing the creative economy sector as well as introducing and promoting local culture and foods.

Tanjung Pinang also continues to develop religious tourist sites, natural tourist destinations, cultural tourist objects and culinary tourism, the mayor stressed.

Currently, Tanjung Pinang hosts the Maritime Festival in the Riau Islands, organized as part of Sail Karimata 2016. The peak program of the Sail Karimata event was held on October 15 in Sukadana, West Kalimantan.

Batam, Riau Islands (ANTARA News) - The immigration office of Batam in Indonesian province of Riau Islands has detained five foreign nationals for allegedly violating immigration provisions.

They were detained during a law enforcement operation carried out at several locations here.

"Five persons suspected of violating immigration provisions are still undergoing the process of examination," head of the Batam immigration office, Teguh Prayitno, stated here on Friday.

According to him, two foreign citizens hailing from the Peoples Republic of China committed fraud by posing as monks.

Both the women were detained from the Nagoya Shopping Complex while they were handing out special souvenirs to assistance providers, Teguh pointed out.

The Chinese citizens allegedly violated Article 122 (a) of Act 6 of 2011.

In addition, the Immigration office also arrested three British citizens from Batuampar for staying beyond the provision.

Local media have reported that violence involving unidentified groups of protesters broke out in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, in an apparent spillover from the clash between protesters and police in front of the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Friday evening.

MetroTV reported that hundreds of people vandalized a minimart and motorcycles in the area next to the residence of embattled Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama at around 6 p.m.

Online news portal Tempo.co reported that the mob attempted to breach a barricade erected by security forces safeguarding Ahok's housing complex. Fighting broke out between the mob and the security personnel consisting of police and soldiers with the mob pelting the security forces with stones.

The security forces managed to disperse the mob by firing tear gas and they had brought the situation under control by 10 p.m..

A demonstration involving hundreds of thousands of Muslims in several big cities across the country, who demanded the police immediately arrest Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama for alleged blasphemy, ended peacefully after representatives of protestors met the government on Friday.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla has met with representatives of demonstrators demanding the prosecution of the capital city governor for alleged religious defamation, and he insisted that the case would be strictly followed up according to the law.

“The police will firmly process the Ahok case without delay,” Kalla told reporters after meeting with the representatives at the Vice President's office.

Meanwhile, the National Police had expressed its gratitude to Muslims who took part in the massive demonstration in Jakarta and other major cities for their peaceful conduct, which was what the security apparatus appealed for.

“Alhamdulillah [thank God] the demonstration ran and ended peacefully today as we expected,” National Police spokesperson Ir. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

Police would continue to process the religious defamation case against the Jakarta governor in two weeks as certain groups expected, but hoped the public would let the police do their job in addressing the issue, he added.

“We are keeping in touch with all parties to solve the dispute for the sake of upholding the law,” Boy asserted.

A senior researcher from the Abdurrahman Wahid Center, Ahmad Suaedy, agreed with the police continuing the investigation into Ahok’s case. But, it should be done independently without any pressure from any party, he added.

“[As] I see the case as a game among elites […] It depends on the police whether they want to bow to pressures or not. I hope the police do not to break the promises they made,” Suaedy said, the meeting between the Vice President and demonstrators was very important to calm down the situation.

http://www.picturevip.com/x/clean/images/2016/11/04/OsgBM.jpg

Incidents

Although the Vice President had welcomed representatives of protesters, however, some of them kept on the street due to angry that President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo had not met with them.

Police fired tear gas at protesters in front of State Palace shortly after 6. p.m., the hour at which the protesters had been instructed to disperse, while the protesters insisted on remaining on Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat, near the palace.

The tear gas was fired after several protesters set off firecrackers, ignoring the police call for them to leave the area near the State Palace and Luar Batang Mosque. Meanwhile, the police prevented protesters from other areas descending on the State Palace.

In response to police action, the protesters started throwing stones, bottles and mineral water at police officers. A least two police trucks were burned by the protesters during the chaos, while several people were taken away from the scene by ambulance. Some protesters and police officers were reportedly injured in a brawl.

Fearing violence, police had put on a show of force for the protest, supported by soldiers and public order officers, while embassies closed, some shops were shuttered, and Jakarta's normally traffic-clogged streets were nearly empty of cars.

Meanwhile, National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian instructed police to stop firing tear gas at the protesters. "I’ve ordered the officers not fire tear gas at the protesters. [...] Let's create peace," he said.

But it seemed that the message from Tito did not reach police officers on the ground as they continued to fire the tear gas, while the protesters at Monas and near the State Palace also kept throwing firecrackers at the police lines.

Grandmother arrested for trying to sell her 16 y.o. granddaughter to a Chinese national for Rp 20 million

http://imgallery.avseesee.com/images/2016/11/08/110ab8dc55b6e2ebede2844c4c578413.jpg

Human trafficking remains a huge problem in Indonesia, with many vulnerable people going abroad each year in search of a better life only to be exploited or worse. It’s almost incomprehensible to think that the families of these victims are sometimes the ones who force them into it and profit off of their exploitation, but it sadly happens often, as illustrated by this tale from Pontianak in West Sumatra.

West Kalimantan Police Commissioner Krisnanda said the case involved a 16-year-old Chinese-Indonesian girl, identified by her initials ER, who was allegedly sold to a 31-year-old Chinese national Liu Zhong Chai as a bride for Rp 57 million.

Through investigations, West Kalimantan Police learned about the human trafficking case and coordinated with other police forces to arrest Liu when he was in Jakarta last Wednesday.

Police also arrested several other suspects on the case, including another Chinese national suspected of brokering the deal and Ng Kek Jung, ER’s 61-year-old grandmother, who allegedly received Rp 20 million of the Rp 57 million for threatening her granddaughter to go through with the marriage.

"Because I had received the money, the victim's grandmother persuaded the victim to go through with her engagement to [Liu]," said West Kalimantan Police Spokemsan Suhadi as quoted by Tribunnews.

Liu and ER’s grandmother will both be charged with human trafficking and could face up to 8 years in prison for their crimes.

US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has made a huge part of his xenophobic policy platform about returning jobs from overseas back to America. The only problem with that is it has been proven multiple times that many of the products bearing Trump’s personal brand are actually produced overseas.

The latest embarrassing example of this was discovered by the folks at Buzzfeed. They were investigating an odd discrepancy in the listings for Trump brand suits being sold on Amazon - specifically, that they were listed as both “Made in the USA” and “Imported”. So they actually purchased two Trump suits (which they will hopefully burn later, for fashion’s sake) to see what the labels on them actually said.

The results will not surprise anybody familiar with Trump (or who read the headline to this story).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CV8S9xPKQoQ

Yes, sadly the suits were manufactured here in Indonesia, hopefully by workers who had no idea that the clothes they were making were going to the same man who once proposed banning all Muslims from entering America (though more recently he has replaced that with a proposal for “extreme vetting”).

However, suits are hardly the only Trump paraphernalia being produced in Indonesia. The Jakarta Post recently did a story on a small village in Klaten, Central Java, where a company with 60 workers was hired to produce 15,000 souvenirs for the Republican candidate.

So it seems like, despite his intense dislike of Muslims, Trump does like Indonesia (or at least its cheap manufacturing labor).

And what do Indonesians think of Trump? We’ll let ex-House Speaker Setya Novanto remind you:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQ9lHwYf3As

Just kidding - Indonesians hate Trump.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo says he expects to see no more rallies over inactive Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama’s alleged blasphemy.

“We hope there are no more demonstrations. They are a waste of energy,” Jokowi said in front of a meeting of Muslim scholars from the National Awakening Party in Ancol, North Jakarta, on Saturday as reported by tribunnews.com.

Jokowi reiterated that he was not taking Ahok’s side, but only wished to let law enforcement bodies handle the case.

“Since the beginning I have said that I would not intervene in any legal issues. Let the law enforcement personnel handle it,” the president said.

Hundreds of thousands of Muslims staged a demonstration in front of the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Nov. 4, demanding that the government jail Ahok for blasphemy. The rally ended in violence with two cars set on fire.

Ahok has repeatedly apologized and said he never intended to insult Islam and the Quran during a speech he gave in the Thousand Islands regency. The accusations began after an edited video of his speech there went viral last month.

JAKARTA, Indonesia - In a tragic incident, several children were wounded after an explosion rocked a church on Borneo Island in Indonesia during a Sunday service, the Indonesian police said.

The bombing is said to have also caused heavy damage to the vehicles at the parking lot of the Oikumene Church in Samarinda.

As per the reports, a man passing on his motorbike threw a Molotov cocktail that resulted in the explosion.

Local police spokesman Lt. Col. Fajar Setiawan said, “The man passed by the church and threw what we suspected was low-explosive cocktail bombs, causing light injuries on four children who were playing there.”

Setiawan informed that the injured kids were immediately rushed to a hospital and were being treated there.

In the aftermath of the ill-fated occurrence, the police spokesman said that the culprit, who wore a t-shirt with the word ‘jihad’ adorned on it, was later arrested by the police and is currently being investigated in relation to the incident.

However, the motive behind the attack is still unknown to the authorities.
This is the second such incident to have targeted the world’s most populous Muslim country in the last four months.

In August this year, an unsuccessful suicide bombing took place at the church, during the Sunday mass.

However, the suicide bomber managed to injure the priest before being arrested.

As several Islamic organizations work to recruit more participants, the Confederation of Indonesian Workers Unions (KSPI) is set to join the next planned rally.

Scheduled for Dec. 2, the rally aims to call for the arrest of incumbent Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, who had been named a suspect in an alleged blasphemy case.

KSPI chairman Said Iqbal said workers planned to go on strike and join the Dec. 2 rally in protest of the Jakarta administration’s minimum wage policy recently imposed in the city.

“Just imagine, the minimum wage for Jakarta is set at Rp 3.3 million [US$246.82] next year, equal to this year's minimum wage in a ‘small city’, namely Karawang [in West Java]," he said on Friday.

Iqbal further said that in the rally, the workers wanted to express their disappointment over Ahok's allegedly blasphemous remarks and the forced evictions conducted under his leadership.

“Around 500,000 workers in Greater Jakarta areas will join the peaceful rally," he claimed.

Ahok triggered anger among Muslims in Indonesia when he cited a Quranic verse in his speech in front of local residents in Thousand Islands regency last September. The National Police subsequently named Ahok a suspect for his remarks and issued a travel ban that prevented him from going overseas.

The Movement of Indonesian Council Edict Supporters (GNPF MUI) announced on Friday that it would carry out a peaceful rally demanding that the police arrest Ahok, who is currently seeking his second term of office in next year’s Jakarta gubernatorial election.

Batam (ANTARA News) - The joint rescue team on Friday recovered the bodies of 54 passengers of a boat which sank on Batam waters of Riau Province on Wednesday while transporting Indonesian migrant workers.

"Thirty-three bodies were recovered during the search operations till 11:00 am on Friday. A total of 54 bodies have been found since Wednesday," Chief of Riau Islands Police Office Brigadier General Sam Budigusdian said here on Friday.

The 33 bodies found on Friday included 29 men, three women and a girl child.

Meanwhile, the search on November 2 managed to recover 18 bodies, which included seven men, 10 women and a seven-month old female infant.

On November 3, the team found three bodies.

As many as 12 bodies out of the 54 have been identified in Bhayangkara Police Hospital of Riau Islands.

The joint Search and Rescue Team had managed to evacuate 41 survivors, comprising 39 migrant workers and two ship crew members, from the boat accident.

"According to information given by the survivors, there were 95 passengers in total and six passengers were still missing," Budigusdian said.

The boat transporting illegal Indonesian migrant workers capsized and sank after being hit by a big wave on Batam waters at dawn of Wednesday.

The November 4 protest was triggered by accusations that Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama insulted Islam by criticising opponents who used Koranic references to attack him

It has been less than a week since Jakarta saw a massive protest against Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama for his alleged blasphemy against the Quran, but police say there is already information circulating about another protest planned for November 25.

“There is already information [about a protest] but we will anticipate it,” said National Police Chief Tito Karnavian yesterday as quoted by Merdeka.

Tito said the government had not yet received any formal request for permission to hold the protest and he did not disclose who might be organizing it. The November 4 protest was initiated by a coalition of hardline Islamic groups including the Islamic Defenders Front.

Presumably any further protests would largely depend on the outcome of the investigation into Governor Ahok’s supposed blasphemy. The police have promised to process the case with an unprecedented level of transparency and various officials have promised that they would reach a conclusion within the next week and a half.

If Ahok were to be found to be innocent of the blasphemy charges then it is very likely that there would be some further protests but whether they would approach the size of the November 4 protest is hard to anticipate now.

If you have somehow not been on the internet at all for the last month, you may have missed the latest musical meme to take over the intertubes - the headscratchingly catchy “Pen Pineapple Apple Pen” music video by Piko-Taro, the alter-ego of Japanese professional comedian Kosaka Daimaoh.

We have spared you the countless Indonesian parodies of PPAP up until now, but this one from the Balikpapan Police force was too good not to share (1,800 people have already shared it).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhC8sNczpaI

What is brilliant about this parody is its subversion and critique of the PPAP trans-binary - rather than attempting to squeeze together the es cendol and the beer to make es cendol beer, the dancing police officer instead rejects the beer and chooses only the es cendol.

The same goes for the gorengan (fried stuff) and narkoba (drugs). Instead of pressing them together into narkoba goreng, he chooses only the gorengan, thus achieving a state on kenyang (fullness).

The video ends with several more police officers telling the audience to stop stop stop narkoba and then the police chief telling us to not consume drugs or alcohol because they will destroy your health and are expensive. Instead, he advises eating es cendol and gorengan.

Some people might argue that videos like this could actually drive the public to try more drugs and alcohol, but we found it’s message very persuasive and you can be assured that the next time somebody asks us to choose between crispy fried gorengan or crystal meth, we will make the right choice.

What is brilliant about this parody is its subversion and critique of the PPAP trans-binary - rather than attempting to squeeze together the es cendol and the beer to make es cendol beer, the dancing police officer instead rejects the beer and chooses only the es cendol.

The political battle over another protest against Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama scheduled for December 2 continues to go back and forth, bringing into serious question whether the demonstration will actually take place. The police have said that they would not allow another massive protest like the one which took place on November 4, arguing that the people’s right to public order outweighed the rights of the protesters in this case. The Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) came back arguing that nobody should worry because their next protest would not just be peaceful, but super peaceful.

Should FPI continue with their Dec 2 rally, they may find far fewer people joining the protest than the 100,000 plus that came out on Nov 4. That is because the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI), the country’s top Muslim clerical body, released a statement yesterday recommending that citizens who wanted to protest against Ahok for his alleged blasphemy not join in more demonstrations and instead voice their opinions through other channels.

MUI legitimized the crusade against Ahok by FPI and other hardline groups by issuing a fatwa declaring that the governor had indeed blasphemed Islam for his remark regarding the Qu’ran. Hardliners even called the organization they created to coordinate the anti-Ahok protests the National Movement to Guard the Fatwa of the Indonesian Ulema Council (GNPF-MUI).

But yesterday’s statement from MUI made it clear that they were not in fact party to GNPF-MUI. It includes the line “... MUI deems it necessary to assert that GNPF-MUI is not part of the Executive Board of MUI and that no formal structural relationship whatsoever exists between the two groups.”

The statement also asked that protesters who did come to the rally not use any MUI logos or attributes.

MUI strongly endorsed the November 4 rally and their logos could be seen on signs and banners throughout the protest. So what changed? It’s not clear, but pressure from the police and the rest of the government (particularly President Jokowi, who has spent the last week meeting with top military and political party leaders) may have had something to do with it.

Detik reported that FPI leader Habib Rizieq met with the executive board of MUI yesterday morning and that after the meeting he left in a hurry, without giving reporters any of his usual colorful commentary. MUI made the statement distancing themselves from the protest later that afternoon.

However, FPI is clearly not giving up on their plans for the Dec 2 rally yet, declaring today that there were three million people ready to join the protest.

Some foreigners joke that Indonesia’s bright, multi-colored rupiah bills look a lot like Monopoly money. One man who was withdrawing money from a Mandiri ATM at a convenience store in Cipete, South Jakarta, on Wednesday was surprised to find out that one of the bills the machine spit out was, in fact, play money.

http://img.slbii.com/images/2016/11/23/a2.jpg

Satriaputra Sukarno showed off the photo of the fake money on his Instagram page on Wednesday afternoon along with the caption: “So… my father withdrew Rp 50k from the Mandiri ATM at Circle K in Cipete, it came out like this. Nice joke Mandiri, but pls give actual 50 :( “

Mandiri’s Customer Service instagram account commented on the photo soon after, apologizing for the problem and saying that the fake money could be exchanged for the real deal at any nearby Mandiri outlet along with the receipt.

This seemed to satisfy Satriaputra who noted in a later edit to his photo caption, “Mandiri does an amazing cust. service job. Case closed! Mine, at least. Shout out to any of yall who got monopoly money as well”.

Tempo confirmed that the incident occurred with Mandiri, whose corporate secretary, Rohan Hafas, said the incident could have occured due to errors made by the vendors charged with replacing the money inside the ATMs.

"If an ATM is outside of a bank branch, the money may be restocked by a vendor. We will contact the vendor and investigate," Rohan told Tempo.

We’ve often been warned to donate money through official channels and charities as opposed to giving money to street beggars. There’s evidently a good reason for that.

Some beggars simply won’t put their money to good use.

The South Jakarta Social Agency recently “cleaned up” areas of Kebayoran Baru and Kebayoran Lama from street beggars. One of the beggars caught in the raid in Jalan Radio Dalam was 70-year-old TB.

TB admitted to authorities that he had received up to Rp 3.6 million in donated money since the beginning of Ramadan, or in other words just two weeks.

“The money was spent to ‘play around’ with women around the traditional markets,” said South Jakarta Social Agency Head Kismoyohadi, as quoted by Tempo yesterday.

Kismoyo added that authorities found TB to be in possession of Rp 5,000 notes instead of smaller denominations, which suggests that people are more charitable during Ramadan.

TB was taken to an old people’s home in East Jakarta. The money he collected was donated to that home.

So if you’re feeling charitable, make sure you donate your money through official charity organizations.

Poor proud kakek in East Jakarta refuses to beg, makes a living letting people use his weight scale

http://www.photo-host.org/images/2016/11/25/SaPOu.jpg

There’s a common perception in Jakarta that many of the city’s poor resort to begging because they would can earn more money doing that than if they worked small jobs. For instance, this old man was found to have Rp 3.6 million on him after only two weeks of begging – money he used to pay for female companionship.

While that kakek (old man) should not be emulated, another poor kakek is tugging at netizens’ heartstrings for his refusal to beg despite his financial condition.

Photos of the elderly man have gone viral on Facebook ever since they were posted on October 26, garnering almost 9,000 shares at the time of writing. It is described in the post that the frail-looking kakek has often been spotted around the streets of East Jakarta carrying a weight scale. The scale is supposedly his source of income – he lets people use it to weigh themselves and they can pay him any amount of money they like.

http://www.photo-host.org/images/2016/11/25/xSm4Bd.jpg

A commenter on the post wrote that he met the kakek once, who said that his name is Oih, he’s 71 years old and he lives in Klender, East Jakarta.

It’s truly admirable that Oih would rather find a way to make a living besides begging. If you want to find out how much you weigh and help an old man at the same time, Oih is said to frequent Rawamangun and Jatinegara in East Jakarta.

Indonesian immigration authorities in Bali say they refused entry to an American man because of his history of sexual offenses in his own country.

Head of Ngurah Rai Immigration Class I, Ari Budijanto told reporters that United States national JDD, 71, arrived in Bali from China on Xianmen Air flight MF891 on Sunday.

But because of the American’s alleged history as a sex offender, he was sent back on Monday at 1 am, reports say.

“We refused (JDD’s entry), because according to our data, he has been involved in sexual crimes. And we do not want to take the risk, for something that would disturb our society,” Tribun Bali quoted Budijanto as saying.

It’s not surprising Indonesian authorities wouldn’t want to run the risk of allowing in someone tagged as a sex offender, given the high profile case of an elderly Australian man who was recently found guilty of sexually abusing a number of young girls in Bali.

Indonesia has amped up its penalties for sex crimes, passing a law authorizing chemical castration for child sex offenders. The Australian, however, was ineligible for that penalty and was ultimately sentenced to 15 years by Denpasar court this October.

A kiwi woman apparently isn’t doing so hot as her drug trial in Denpasar court nears.

New Zealander Myra Lynne William, 27, was arrested after her flight from Melbourne landed at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport in September.

Immigration noticed her behaving “unnaturally” in the queue and when she was taken aside to be further checked, a pouch of 0.43 grams of crystal meth allegedly fell to the ground. Police tested her urine, which allegedly came back positive for methamphetamine, marijuana, and ecstasy.

Now William is apparently showing similar, unbalanced behavior, based on comments from her lawyer, Suriantama Nasution.

"She's so stressed and freaked out," AAP quoted Nasution as saying on Thursday.

The kiwi’s trial is “soon” approaching, prosecutor Paulus Agung reportedly said on Thursday. The kiwi will likely be facing charges covering possession, importation, and use of drugs.

Under Indonesian law, drug use could land the kiwi four years max in jail, while the possession charge could get her 12 years, and importation could mean a maximum of 15 years behind bars.

William, who actually resides in Australia, had come to Bali for a holiday with a group of friends before her incident at immigration landed her in trouble. This is her first time to the island, according to her lawyer.

Rp 470 BILLION class action lawsuit filed against Ahok on behalf of all Muslims in Indonesia

http://tryimg.com/8/2016/12/13/lGeMh.jpg

Earlier this week, FPI leader Habib Novel filed a civil lawsuit against Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama for Rp 204 million to cover cost of his own private investigation into Ahok’s blasphemy case. Yesterday, yet another lawsuit against the governor was filed - a Rp 407 billion class action lawsuit that its initiators assert is being filed on behalf of all Muslims in Indonesia.

The lawsuit was filed by Ali Lubis, the vice chairman of the lawyers group Advokat Cinta Tanah Air (ACTA). Another member of ACTA, Gerindra Party politician and lawyer Habiburokhman, filed the other lawsuit against Ahok on behalf of Novel.

"The group being represented in this lawsuit is all Indonesian citizens who are Muslims, and the group’s representative is Ali Hakim Lubis, an Indonesian Muslim citizen," ACTA lawyer Ali Nurhayati said yesterday as quoted by Detik.

Nurhayati said the lawsuit is based on Article 98 of the Criminal Code which allow victims of crime to demand compensation for their cases. He did not specify what material damages Ahok’s alleged blasphemy caused to all Muslims in Indonesia, but Nurhayati did say his team was ready to corroborate the claim with evidence, witnesses and experts.

The ACTA lawyer said the lawsuit’s key demand was compensation amounting to Rp 470 billion. It also asks that Ahok be forced to purchase advertisements in nine national newspapers to issue an apology to all Muslims (despite the fact that there are already literally thousands of new stories about his numerous past apologies already).

"[We are asking that] that the defendant be punished by paying damages to the plaintiff for material losses amounting to Rp 470 billion that would be distributed to all members of the group in the form of Muslim worship facilities that would be coordinated by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in every major city throughout Indonesia," Nurhayati said.

To say that this civil lawsuit is on behalf of all Muslims in Indonesia seems like quite a stretch, considering that less than half of all Indonesians believe Ahok actually committed blasphemy. We’re also wondering how exactly Ahok’s words could have possibly caused Rp 470 billion worth of material damages to Muslims, unless ACTA is planning to argue that Ahok should be held responsible for the costs of organizing the massive protests against him.

Which wouldn’t be a very surprising argument for them to make, considering that they also think Ahok should repay Habib Novel for the money the FPI leader spent privately investigating Ahok’s alleged crime.

Jakarta's Christian governor will stand trial on Tuesday accused of blasphemy in a high-profile case that has emboldened hardline groups and stoked fears of growing intolerance in the world's largest Muslim-majority nation.

Basuki Tjahaja Purnama -- the first Christian to govern Jakarta in more than 50 years -- will defend allegations that he insulted the Koran and fight calls for his imprisonment under Indonesia's tough blasphemy laws.

Purnama, known for his outspoken style, outraged Muslims when he controversially quoted a passage from the Islamic holy text while campaigning in elections for the Jakarta governorship.

His remarks ignited a protest movement by hardliners, who have long railed against a non-Muslim in city hall but failed to dent the governor's popularity.

But their rallying cry to defend Islam and punish "the blasphemer" attracted unprecedented support from Muslims both moderate and conservative, who marched against the governor in numbers not seen in many years.

The case is being viewed in part as a test of religious tolerance in Indonesia, where a spike in attacks on minorities has eroded a reputation for diversity and inclusiveness.

"If he's found guilty, this could be the biggest setback for pluralism in Indonesia's history," said Tobias Basuki from the Jakarta-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Race a factor

Purnama fell foul of Indonesia’s archaic blasphemy laws when he insinuated that his opponents had used a Koranic verse to trick people into voting against him.

An edited version of his speech went viral online, sparking outrage far beyond Jakarta, where Purnama has ruled since his predecessor Joko Widodo became president in late 2014.

The governor apologised but Indonesia's highest clerical body, and a slew of radical groups, declared the remarks blasphemous and urged authorities to bring charges.

Critics want the country's blasphemy laws overhauled. The legislation was rarely used during the 32-year rule of strongman Suharto, but in recent years it has been exploited to persecute minorities, rights groups say.

Purnama is not only Christian but ethnic Chinese, a community long mistrusted in Indonesia, and his race made pinning him for blasphemy easier, political expert Syamsudin Haris told AFP.

"Ahok's 'Chinese-ness' is a factor," he added, using the governor's popular nickname.

Religious freedom is protected by law in Indonesia but moralising thugs often enforce their own rules, preventing Islamic minorities like Shias and Ahmadis from worshipping and opposing the construction of churches.

The most prominent of these groups, the Islamic Defenders Front, has used the blasphemy scandal to burnish its credentials, staging high-profile events alongside political leaders including President Joko Widodo.

"A group that used to hound the public and the government has now been legitimised, and even accommodated, by the government,” said Hendardi, the chairman of the rights group Setara Institute, who goes by one name.

'Trial by mob'

Widodo -- like presidents before him -- has been accused of ignoring the rising influence of intolerant hardline groups, which have flourished in the nearly two decades of democracy since Suharto’s downfall.

The president "did not have the courage" to stand up to these firebrand Muslims, Haris said, fearing a backlash from the electorate, around 90 percent of which follows Islam.

The populist backlash against Purnama -- an ally of Widodo -- backed the president even further into a corner.

His efforts at playing peacemaker ahead of a huge rally in November failed, with mobs burning police cars and clashing with riot officers outside the presidential palace.

Widodo was forced to cancel a long-planned visit to Australia to confront the crisis, sparking rumours of a coup. Later, arrests were made over an alleged plot to topple the government.

"The case shows that the government has an enormous task to address political Islam," Basuki said.

Critics say the controversy is as much about politics as the governor's foes whip up anger to reduce his support ahead of the hotly-contested February poll.

Purnama was on track to win in February but has been watching his lead crumble as his two opponents -- both politically-connected Muslims -- have gained ground.

Purnama has refused to bow out of the race, but risks haemorrhaging more support if the blasphemy scandal drags on, Djayadi Hanan from pollster SMRC told AFP.

The trial - which Widodo and the police have vowed to resolved quickly -- will have long-lasting ramifications, analysts say, especially if Purnama is sentenced to five years prison as allowed by law.

"The government can't let this become a trial by mob, because it will set a terrible precedent for our democracy," said Hendardi.

Legislators in the House of Representative (DPR) have recently been discussing several possible new additions to Indonesia’s Criminal Code which have alarmed observers and human rights advocates.

This week, lawmakers discussed an amendment to criminal code Article 484, which criminalizes adultery. The law currently criminalizes a member of a married couple having sex with a third party and is rarely used. But the draft amendment being pushed by a large faction within the DPR would make all sex outside of marriage punishable by up to 5 years in jail. (It essentially makes the same changes to the law that conservative Islamic group AILA is currently petitioning the Constitutional Court to make).

The amendment is backed by Islamic political parties including the United Development Party (PPP), National Awakening Party (PKB), National Mandate Party (PAN), and Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) as well as Gerindra, the NasDem Party and the Democratic Party. Together they make up just over 50% of the DPR.

PPP lawmaker Arsul Sani justified the amendment saying that everybody knows that sex outside of marriage is immoral and “the law should reflect morality.” He was quoted by the Jakarta Post as saying that the law would prevent people from taking violent actions against adulterers, such as “burning unmarried couples”.
Criminalizing contraception

Other possible additions to the Criminal Code that have activists worried are Article 481 and Article 483. Combined, the articles would make it illegal for unauthorized personnel to distribute contraceptives in any form or even provide information about them.

"If this law was enacted, the consequences are very serious. Because it means that my friends who are engaged in reproductive health education can be criminalized since the law’s formulation is limited. People who have been certified by the state are the only ones who could do reproductive health campaigns,” said Anggara, a senior researcher at the Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (ICJR) during a discussion in Jakarta on Thursday as quoted by Kompas.

Anggara warned that the law would serious impede efforts by NGOs and also the government’s own family planning programs from being able to provide people with critical information about reproductive health and also HIV.

JAKARTA: Indonesia's central bank governor said on Monday (Dec 19) the bank is seeking to slash three zeroes off the face value of rupiah notes in a move to simplify its currency system.

Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Agus Martowardojo said he has asked President Joko Widodo to revive a previously shelved plan to re-denominate the rupiah to make it "more efficient and simpler".

A draft law backing redenomination was submitted to parliament in 2013 under the previous government. However, the draft was put aside due to instability in Indonesia's financial markets at the time.

If parliament approves a revived bill next year, the central bank would need two more years to prepare new notes. It would then need another seven years of transition before it could fully remove three zeroes from the currency, he said.

"Prices of goods and services have to also be simplified. Because of the transition period, in which people can use both the old and new rupiah denominations, we are sure it wouldn't affect inflation," Martowardojo said at the launch of a new series of designs for the physical currency.

The largest rupiah denomination is currently 100,000 and the smallest note is 1,000. The central bank's new currency designs will be for notes that use the current denomination system and will feature images of historic Indonesian figures.

Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said the rupiah's many zeroes reflected the currency's inflation history and that she would discuss the proposal with parliament with a view to introducing it next year. However, she said the proposal is not on the list of current legislative priorities for 2017.

"A redenomination would strengthen assurance in Indonesia's currency, but it does not affect anything nominally," she told reporters at a separate event on Monday.

Bank Indonesia reveals slick new rupiah notes and coins design

http://www.picturevip.com/x/clean/images/2016/12/21/8qrlM.png

Bank Indonesia (BI), Indonesia’s central bank, just unveiled the new designs for rupiah banknotes and coins which will come into circulation starting today.

As previously reported, the new banknotes and coins are adorned with a new set of national heroes including Tjut Meutiah and Frans Kaisiepo. The new currency is being dubbed the NKRI Edition, as all designs incorporate the term “Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia” (The Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia).

The new currency was launched by BI at 9am today. The public is able to exchange old money for the NKRI Edition at Jakarta’s Blok M Square starting from 11am today.

We think the new designs are a clear improvement over the old ones, but unfortunately the changes appear to be limited to the look of the new notes – we would’ve loved if our cash could be made of sturdier stuff like Singapore’s plastic bills.

Most of the banknotes retain their respective colors from the previous edition, with the exception of the Rp 1,000 note which went from light blue to a slightly lime green-tinged grey, which could cause some mix ups with the Rp 2,000 and Rp 5,000 notes.

BI announced that old banknotes and coins are still legally binding until they are entirely withdrawn from circulation at some point in the future.

Two Australian tourists accused of stealing a bicycle have been forced to take a “walk of shame” through an Indonesian island with signs round their necks, an official said on Tuesday (Dec 20).
“I am thieve (sic). Don’t do what I did,” the signs read.

The tourists, whose identities were not revealed, allegedly stole the bicycle about 10 days ago on Gili Trawangan, a popular tourist destination in central Indonesia.

CCTV recordings showed the two Australians taking a bike from the hotel, said village chief Muhamad Taufik.

The hotel manager reported the case to the authorities who caught the pair the following day, Mr Taufik added.

“We interrogated them, made an agreement, paraded them around the island and forced them to leave Gili,” Mr Taufik told AFP.

The two were the first foreigners this year to undergo a “walk of shame” on the island. A few Indonesians have been forced to take part this year in similar parades for theft.

National laws are in force on the island but it is unclear whether the Australians underwent a formal police investigation.

“The walk of shame parade is a regulation in our village. I don’t know whether the police are charging them now, what matters to me is that they’re now gone,” Mr Taufik said.

Such parades have taken place for years on Gili Trawangan, a tiny island off the coast of Lombok and just east of the major resort island of Bali.

The Karimun Police in Riau Islands are investigating the discovery of the dead body of a Singaporean man.

Karimun Police water police unit head First Insp. Sahata Sitorus said the body, which was found by local fishermen on Friday, has been admitted to the Muhammad Sani General Hospital to undergo a post-mortem examination.

“We have yet to identify the cause of the death and why the body was floating in the Karimun Anak water,” Sahata told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

The dead body was found in black trousers, a white shirt with “PSA Marine” written on it and boots. An ID card was found with the name Ilzam bin Odit, born on Sept. 8, 1963. The ID card said the man lived in Sengkang, Singapore.

Sahara estimated that the body had floated in the sea for around two days.

Karimun regency is located 50 kilometers southwest of Singapore and can be reached in 105-minutes by ferry from the city-state.

One of the posts that went viral over the weekend, calling for a boycott on Alfamart and Indomaret because they were forcing customers to pay an extra Rp 100 that would go to Ahok's campaign. In fact, the donation program is voluntary and the money goes to help underprivileged students pay for school supplies.

Recently, many Muslims who are against Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama took to social media to call for a boycott on Sari Roti after the bread company denied supporting the December 2 anti-Ahok rally or its cause (some people even posted photos of themselves stepping on packages of Sari Roti bread). Now, many people are calling for a boycott of the ubiquitous Alfamart and Indomaret convenience store chains for reasons that are even more made-up and ridiculous.

The problem seems to have started with posts such as this one by Facebook user Umar Alamudi, which has already been shared over 4,800 times.

“Starting now when you shop at Indomaret or Alfamart they will take Rp 100 to donate to Ahok’s campaign. The proof is the Indomart or Alfamart receipt. BOYCOTT INDOMART AND ALFAMART.”

As proof of this claim, a line on the receipt is circled: “Donasi-ku bangun negeri” (My donation to build up the country).

Somehow the original poster (whose Facebook wall is covered in pro-FPI and anti-Sari Roti posts, btw) took that to mean that the Rp 100 was meant for Ahok’s campaign (without any proof whatsoever) and apparently many of the thousands of people who shared it felt the same way, leading to a storm of criticism against the convenience stores online.

Alfamart released statements through the media and social media to explain that while the “Donasi-ku Bangun Negeri” program does exist, it is purely voluntary and that the money doesn’t go to any political campaigns, but to purchases school supplies such as uniforms, stationery and shoes for underprivileged students in cooperation with the Yayasan Berani Bhakti Bangsa foundation and several other charity groups.

So not only did this hoax spread misinformation and anti-Ahok propaganda, it also probably took away a significant amount of money away from a program to help underprivileged school children. We hope whoever originally came up the hoax feels very proud of themselves.

A 54-year-old man living in Malang regency, East Java, was named Slamet Hari Natal, meaning Merry Christmas, by his parents because he was born on Dec. 25, 1962.

“Yes, that’s my name,” he said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Tuesday.

He showed his ID card and family card, which said his name was “Slamet Hari Natal”.

“It was supposed to be Selamat Hari Natal, but because we are Javanese, it became Slamet,” he said.

He said his mother gave birth to him in the house of the midwife, named Akas Kiyo, in Tumpang, Malang. The midwife was Christian and suggested his parents to name him Selamat Hari Natal, the Indonesian Christmas greeting. His parents, although Muslims, decided to accept the suggestion but named him Slamet instead. Slamet is a common Javanese name and loosely translates to "safe".

“They said they didn’t want to think hard for the name, and they had that name ready, so they accepted the suggestion,” he said.

He has one sister named Mujiati.

Although his name is Slamet Hari Natal and he is a Muslim, he said he never received any criticism from his neighbors. “No, never. We practice tolerance here,” he said.

An Indonesian tourist died on Wednesday after falling from a cliff at Uluwatu, Bali.

It’s alleged that the tourist, hailing from Solo, Java, had been taking a selfie at the edge of the cliff before he fell.

Kwan Anto Randy Saputro, 47, had come with his family to visit the famous Balinese Uluwatu Temple on Wednesday afternoon.

It’s alleged that Saputro leaned out to take a selfie and slipped and fell over the barrier on the cliff top, according to a Tribun Bali report.

Basarnas (Search and Rescue) was called to the scene to evacuate Saputro—who turned out not to have survived the fall. It took Basarnas about an hour and a half to two hours to evacuate the body because of their challenging position, along with a windy conditions and a high tide.

A video taken by Basarnas and released to Tribun Bali shows the full-on evacuation effort put on by the search and rescue team.

“The incident reported concerns a domestic tourist from Surakarta (Solo). We directly dispatched a rescue team with a ‘high angle’ rescue technique to rescue and evacuate the victim,” head of Basarnas Bali, Did Hamzar, told Tribun Bali.

“The victim died falling down from a cliff at Uluwatu with a height of approximately 100 to 120 meters,” Hamzar added.

Saputro’s body was immediately taken to Sanglah Hospital after being evacuated, reports said.

Immigration officials have arrested 10 young women from China and Vietnam suspected to have operated as sex workers in Batam, Riau Islands.

Batam Immigration Office chief Teguh Prayitno said the arrests were conducted by immigration officers in two separate raids on a boarding house and a club in a business area in Nagoya, Batam, on Wednesday.

“They entered Batam via Jakarta. They have been operating in Batam for several weeks, accepting orders for sexual services by phone,” said Teguh in a press conference on Thursday.

Eight out of the 10 foreign citizens arrested are from Vietnam while the two others came from China. They are aged between 20 and 30 years.

“They claimed they were tourists but they could not show the tourist accommodations where they were staying. They in fact lived in a boarding house,” said Teguh.

Many young women from various countries are working illegally as sex workers in Batam, the immigration office stated.

http://tryimg.com/8/2017/01/08/ltQY1.jpg

Teguh said the arrests were the office’s response over reports filed by several parties on the growing number of foreign sex workers in Batam.

“There are still many foreign sex workers operating here. We are now collecting accurate information to be able to arrest them."

The immigration office will charge the 10 foreigners over alleged stay permit violations as stipulated by Law No.6/2011 on immigration. “They will all be deported back to their countries,” said Teguh.

During Wednesday's operation, the immigration officials also arrested Khoo Wei Chyi, 42, a Singaporean citizen, over an alleged stay permit violation. “The Singaporean citizen is a convicted criminal in his country. We will deport him also,” said Teguh.

The government is set to revamp its oversight system on foreigners amid growing concern of foreigners exploiting their visas to work in the country illegally.

Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto said on Friday that the government would set up a task force to monitor the movement of foreigners entering the country’s borders.

“The monitoring [under the task force] will ensure foreigners who enter and move across Indonesia do not have a hidden agenda, such as working illegally, or even committing terror acts and being involved in the illegal drug trade,” Wiranto told reporters following a meeting with relevant ministers at his office.

The task force would function to fill the gap in the current oversight system, which focused on monitoring foreigners when they entered Indonesian borders, yet gradually lost control when they moved to other areas, Wiranto added.

The minister said the task force would empower local administrations, which already have their own monitoring system, to step up oversight of foreigners living in the regions.

National Police deputy chief Comr. Gen. Syafruddin confirmed the function of the task force was similar to the foreigner oversight (POA) team under the auspices of the National Police.

The team was set up under the Soeharto regime but disbanded by the 2011 Immigration Law, which curtails the police’s authority to oversee foreigners.

Syafruddin said the police would now be involved in monitoring foreigners, but they would be under the coordination of the chief security office.

The decision to establish such a task force comes following a crackdown on foreigners violating visas in Indonesia in recent months. Data from the Law and Human Rights Ministry’s Directorate General of Immigration revealed that in 2016, 7,787 foreigners, 1,837 of whom were Chinese, were punished for violating immigration regulations.

The crackdown has sparked a rumor that 10 million Chinese people have been working illegally in the country. President Joko ‘‘Jokowi’’ Widodo has repeatedly rebuffed the rumor, which government officials said was aimed at stoking anti-Chinese sentiment in the country and to discredit the current administration.

According to Manpower Ministry data, the total number of foreign workers officially employed in Indonesia as of November 2016 stands at 74,183 people, 21,271 of whom are Chinese.

Manpower Minister M. Hanif Dhakiri asserted that the number of illegal foreign workers in the country was not that significant compared to the official ones, saying that from the crackdown last year, the ministry and relevant authorities had arrested at least 800 foreigners working illegally.

He said his ministry would also intensify its oversight system in accordance to the existing scheme, in which inspections of companies employing foreign workers were carried out both periodically and in response to reports of suspicious activities involving foreigners.

“We will continuously improve our monitoring, but the public should also stop fussing over the matter. It’s true that there are problems [related to illegal foreign workers], but don’t create a hyperbolic issue over that,” Hanif said.

http://tryimg.com/8/2017/01/08/l2RZa.jpg

Meanwhile, Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly said the significant number of foreign workers in Indonesia, including Chinese, corresponded to the fact that foreign investors in the country’s industrial sector wanted their own citizens to also work on the field, as they had special specifications.

“Gradually, there will be location training [by foreigners] so that [Indonesian workers] can take over the factory because technology transfer is required,” Yasonna said, adding that a regulation on the matter would be further strengthened under the Industry Ministry domain.

Yasonna further rebuffed suggestions that President Jokowi’s signature free-visa policy, which initially aimed to attract 20 million foreign tourists annually by 2019, had contributed to the rising number of illegal foreign workers in the country — those who first entered with tourists visa.

However, Yasonna’s office is also set to review the free-visa policy amid concerns that among the 174 countries enjoying Indonesia’s visa waiver, there were several small countries that had not contributed to the increasing number of visitors to Indonesia.

Wiranto concurred with Yasonna, saying that an evaluation of the list of countries enjoying the free-visa policy was important to ensure the policy had not opened the door for foreigners to work illegally
in the country.

.... netizens let her know it’s a vibrator.

http://deffe.com/images/2017/01/13/vibrator-dikira-mikrofon_20170104_133345.jpg

Can you tell the difference between a microphone and a vibrator? One Indonesian woman seemingly couldn’t, making her the subject of much mockery online.

Tribun News today reported that a viral Facebook post went up on December 26 which includes a photo of two objects and a caption that says “Thank God, I got a power bank and a microphone as a gift.” The post has already been shared over 1,500 times.

We can assure you that the photo above, which was censored by Tribun News, does not in fact show a power bank and a microphone. The larger item is almost certainly Fairy Wand Massager Multi-Speed Personal Massage Vibrator.

Thousands of comments inevitably poured in, with many netizens teasing what they believe to be the woman’s naivety with comments like, “the mic is so cute and pink,” and “Why don’t you use the powerbank?”

Tribun News kept the woman’s identity a secret to protect her online privacy. That said, we were easily able to find Facebook profile, which appears to be legitimate, and the controversial post is indeed still there on her personal wall.

The question is, is OP hopelessly naïve or did she in fact know exactly what it was she was posting and this was also just a clever ploy to achieve internet fame?

Well, considering that so many netizens have pointed out to her what the “mic” and “power bank” really are, and yet she still hasn’t removed the post, we’re leaning towards the latter.

At either rate, let’s just assume it’s all in good fun and hope no overzealous conservative reports her to the authorities for spreading pornography and violating the Information and Electronic Transactions Act.

...so Jokowi gives her a call on NYE

http://deffe.com/images/2017/01/13/jangan_nangis.jpg

For most of us, missing out on an opportunity to see the president would be a big disappointment, but for one little girl it seemed like the end of the world.

The girl, whose name is Neisha, had wanted to see President Joko Widodo while he was on a work trip to Tomohon, North Sulawesi, last Tuesday. The president’s convoy was scheduled to pass by her family’s house that day on the way to another event and Neisha had been waiting to see him that morning.

But an unfortunately timed trip to the bathroom caused Neisha to miss Jokowi as he passed by. Upon learning this, she immediately started crying tears of inconsolable sadness and bitter anger, blaming her father for not alerting her to the president’s presence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCHsfNXSWZw

Her mother, Nova Rampengan, took a video of Neisha’s adorable sadness over not seeing the president and put it on Facebook, where it quickly went viral and was written about by several media outlets.

The video also caught the attention of Kahiyang Ayu, Jokowi’s daughter. She posted on Instagram, asking if anybody knew how they could get in contact with Neisha’s family. Kahiyang’s message reached Nova, who then got in contact with the president’s daughter to help set up a very special surprise for Neisha.

The result of that heartwarming surprise was published on New Year’s Eve as the latest video blog post from Jokowi’s youngest son Kaesang. In the video, Kaesang and Kahiyang explain the story of Neisha’s missed meeting with their father and also replay the video one more time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oh2Wh8ZAiHA

Kahiyang first calls Nova to ask for Neisha. Once Neisha is on the line, she hands the phone over to the president. Their conversation went something like this:

Jokowi: Hello Neisha, good evening. You were the one crying the other day, yeah?

Neisha: Yeah…

Jokowi: Why were you crying?

Neisha: I wanted to meet…

Jokowi: Who did you want to meet?

Neisha: Bapak President.

Jokowi: Oh you wanted to meet the president. And you couldn’t meet him?

Neisha: Yeah...

Jokowi: Yeah, I saw you were crying the other day. Well, I’m recording this, later you can watch it on Youtube, ok? But don’t cry anymore, ok?

Neisha: Ok.

Jokowi: Study hard, ok?

Neisha: Ok.

The next day, on January 1, Nova posted this impossibly cute video of Neisha praying for the president and his family to be healthy and blessed by God in the New Year.

The Law and Human Rights Ministry announced Friday it had arrested 32 foreigners, allegedly sex workers, violating immigration procedures in numerous entertainment centers in Jakarta proper.

Carried out on Thursday by investigators of the ministry's Immigration Office, the arrests were the second operation in the past three weeks, 137 alleged foreign sex workers have been arrested in total.

Immigration Office's foreign nationals monitoring and law enforcement director Yurod Saleh said 32 suspected female sex workers, mostly from Vietnam, were arrested during a string of raids on Thursday in three entertainment centers in West Jakarta, North Jakarta and Bogor in West Java.

During the raids, investigators confiscated 27 passports of Vietnamese, Kazakh, Chinese, Uzbek, Moroccan and Russian nationals, Rp 5 million in cash, cellphones, contraceptives and karaoke hostess uniforms from the arrested women.

The arrested women have allegedly violated a number of provisions in the 2011 Immigration Law, such as being unable to show a passport when asked by investigators and overstaying a visa, which are stipulated in Article 116 and Article 122, respectively.

"They entered Indonesia using tourist visas and visas on arrival," Yurod told a press conference.

When asked whether investigators had also uncovered the human trafficking networks that sent the arrested alleged sex workers to Indonesia, Yurod said, "investigators are delving into that matter."

Previously, Immigration Office's investigators apprehended 125 suspected foreign female sex workers, mostly Chinese nationals, during a string of raids carried out in numerous cities across the archipelago on New Year's Eve.

The latest target in a long line of controversial censorship choices by Indonesian television stations is Indonesia’s own homegrown international popstar Agnez Mo.

The “Coke Bottle” singer’s figure was completely blurred out during a recent showing of TransTV’s 15th anniversary celebration program in which Agnez performed wearing a kind of corset and shorts underneath a long flowing yellow jacket.

Agnez apparently went unblurred during the program’s original airing, but that it was blurred during a replay which took place over the weekend.

There was an uproar on social media in February when Puteri Indonesia contestants wearing traditional kebayas had parts of their bodies blurred during a replay of the beauty pageant.

http://www.picturevip.com/x/clean/images/2017/01/17/DR1i9.jpg

Other targets of TV censorship that have been ridiculed by Indonesian netizens in recent times include Shizuka from the cartoon “Doraemon” and Sandy the squirrel from “Spongebob Squarepants”, a humanoid robot, and a female swimmer competing in the Indonesia’s National Games.

http://www.picturevip.com/x/clean/images/2017/01/17/trxp6.jpg

The National Broadcasting Commission (KPI) is often blamed for TV station’s overzealous censorship, but KPI always replies that it is the TV stations themselves that decide what to censor on a show-by-show basis. However, KPI sets out strict guidelines for TV stations regarding what they can show in regards to the human body.

“In broadcast standards and regulations article 18, it’s mentioned that TV stations are forbidden from ‘exploiting and/or showing specific body parts, such as thighs, behind, breasts, in a close-up or medium shot,” said KPI head Yuliandre Darwis, as quoted by Liputan 6.

Whether Agnez’s outfit required censorship under those guidelines, or whether such guidelines perpetuate patriarchal ideas about women’s bodies and female modesty, we’ll let you decide for yourselves.

While some members of the police are investigating FPI leader Habib Rizieq’s claims that the anti-counterfeiting system on the new rupiah bills are secretly communist logos (they aren’t), other police officers were busting a very real counterfeit money scheme in Taman Sari, West Jakarta, involving the circulation of fake US dollars.

"ZN, a citizen of Singapore, has been secured for exchanging counterfeit money at a money changer in the area of Taman Sari. ZN was arrested on December 14, 2016," said Taman Sari Police Chief Nasriadi during a press conference today as quoted by Detik.

After interrogating ZN, Taman Sari Metro Police arrested five others, all Indonesian, for their involvement in the counterfeit money scheme.

"From the suspects, we seized counterfeit dollars with a value of about $100,000 in 100 USD bill increments. We also seized printing equipment including computers, printers, cutting tools and printing tools," Nasriadi said.

Police say ZN was charged with distributing the fake $100 bills to money changers in Jakarta while the counterfeits were printed in Yogyakarta.
A money changer on Jalan Gajah Mada noticed one of their fake notes, which led police to begin their investigation.

Nasriadi said that the suspects are believed to have been creating counterfeit currency for quite some time, not just US dollars but other foreign currencies as well. Among the evidence they found was a flash disk containing high-quality data on Singaporean dollars, Brazilian real and others.

Police say they are still developing the case and hunting for other suspects. According to Nasriadi, they could all face up to 15 years in jail for their counterfeiting crimes.

Well, it wasn’t exactly the meticulous years-in-the-making prison escape plan from “The Shawshank Redemption” (or even that TV show “Prison Break”, for that matter), but it seems to have been just as effective. Seven prisoners managed to escape from detention at the Police Investigation Narcotics Directorate in East Jakarta early this morning by punching a hole through a bathroom wall.

"The seven inmates escaped by punching holes in the bathroom wall with iron bars and climbing the walls of the [next door] National Brain Center Hospital as tall as 2.5 meters," said Brigadier Eko Daniyanto of the Police Drug Investigations Division in a written statement as picked up by Kompas.

According to police, the escape apparently occurred around 4:15 am. The seven prisoners who are currently on the run include Azizul (30), Ridwan (22), Cai Chang (49), Anthony (33), Amiruddin (27), Ricky Gelani (30), and Sukma Jaya (34). Police have not released many details about their crimes, besides that three had been detained for methamphetamines and four for marijuana.

Eko said they also studying CCTV footage from behind the prison and from the neighboring National Brain Center Hospital. Police said they were forming seven teams, one to pursue each of the seven suspects, as well as keeping tabs on each of the prisoners’ families and their mobile phone accounts.

The officers that were assigned to guard the prisoners when they escaped also being investigated and police say they are analyzing how the prison’s security could have been breached in such a way.
