President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has repeated his instruction to his ministers to focus on their respective portfolios and comment less on topics outside their assigned sectors.
“Ministers have to focus on their jobs, they shouldn’t use all their time being commentators,” the President said when opening a cabinet meeting at the State Palace in Bogor, West Java on Tuesday. He did not make any comments about specific ministers.
Jokowi demanded his ministers to think about how to make progress in their respective areas next year.
The President also advised his ministers not to release contradictory information, by making public statements about differences of opinion in private forums, saying that the conflicting statements have disrupted economic growth.
President Jokowi has frequently openly criticized his ministers, saying that they have not performed their tasks optimally. Last week, Jokowi expressed his disappointment about ministers in two provinces in Papua, saying that they had not integrated their efforts to develop the provinces.
In his talk on Tuesday, the President particularly focused on his concerns about the lack of progress in implementing deregulation measures to boost the national economy.
He said that there were currently some 42,000 regulations in the form of presidential regulations, government regulations, and ministerial regulations that were detrimental to the investment climate in the country.
“Next year, at least, half of them should be eliminated across all ministries. All those complicated regulations have shackled us. They have hindered flexibility and prevented us from taking a leap forward,” Jokowi said as reported by tribunnews.com. (bbn)(+)
