Spend 41% still go so many track cock ups disruptions? If they spend 50% on maintenance, then how they ever pay the taxpayer back for all the loans given to them to start up the company?

SINGAPORE: At its quarterly results briefing for the period ending in September, transport operator SMRT said it expects rail maintenance-related expenses to reach about 50 per cent of its rail revenue by the end of the financial year.

Currently, SMRT said its rail maintenance-related expenses was 41 per cent of its rail revenue and formed 23 per cent of its total Group operating expenses in the second quarter.

SMRT's net profit for the second quarter of FY2016 grew 1.9 per cent from a year ago to S$25.7 million, however its overall fare business recorded an operating loss of S$1.4 million in Q2.

Its train and LRT operations suffered a combined operating loss of S$4 million, more than offsetting the operating profit of S$2.6 million from its bus operations. This was due mainly to higher repairs and maintenance costs, staff costs and depreciation, partially offset by lower energy expenditure.

SMRT President and Group CEO Desmond Kuek said the expected increase in rail maintenance expenditure would most likely be due to its Tuas Extension and added train capacity.

“We are preparing for the Tuas Extension and we have to ramp up our staff headcount in order to achieve that in good time," he said.

“At the same time, we are taking on 45 new trains from now till end of next year. That requires an accompanying number of maintenance as well as operation crews to support that higher number. So simply on the basis of expanded network, we’re having to increase headcount and that goes into all this maintenance and support for the capacity.”

Mr Kuek also gave an update on the MRT upgrading programme, saying the transport operator is continuing to replace its rail sleepers and upgrade its signaling systems.

“In all likelihood, if we make good progress with this, the sleepers, we should be able to complete the sleepers by the end of next year or early 2017. And with the signaling, we are looking at operationalizing the new signal systems on the North South Line by the second quarter of next year, and for the East West line will follow after.”

“While all of this is ongoing, the system continues to be dealt with because of its age profile and obviously there’s a need for us to step up some of our maintenance team efforts in addressing some of the more troubling spots in the networks, even as we roll out the complete change-out of all these sub-systems.”
