After internet users divulged recently that they spotted bug and cockroach residue in buns offered at two outlets of the Beijing-based Qingfeng Steamed Bun restaurant chain, the company responded Oct. 18 on its microblog that the two stores have violated food safety regulations and have been instructed to suspend operations, the China Youth Daily reports.

Qingfeng also launched food safety inspections of all its outlets across the country on the same day, which will continue for three months. The firm's headquarters also said it will set up an operations inspection and supervision centerto strengthen supervision of food safety at its outlets. It will also employ China Certification & Inspection Group (CCIC), an independent third-party certification and inspection organization, to help with its efforts to enhance food safety.

The century-old Qingfeng is preparing to go public after its business received a massive boost following a visit by President Xi Jinping to one of its Beijing outlets in 2013. The chain, a subsidiary of state-run Beijing Huatian Food and Drink Group, said it will first integrate its assets before formulating a concrete listing plan.

Qingfeng operates 300 stores, including 262 in Beijing and others in the three northeastern provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning. The chain plans to expand to 1,000 outlets in the next five years, 80% of which will be franchise stores, with most of the new units to be set up away from Beijing, according to the company.

The recent food safety problem at Qingfeng is prevalent in the Chinese-style fast food industry, according to the China Youth Daily report.

The country's fast food market is dominated by foreign restaurant operators which are known for being more customer-friendly and having higher management standards. These two characteristics are lacking among Chinese-style fast food suppliers, it said.

To cope with the problem, it is crucial for Qingfeng to raise its food safety and operation standards, according to the report.
