KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia finally recorded their first win in the World Cup Qualifiers when Ong Kim Swee’s side edged Timor Leste 1-0 at Municipal Stadium in Dili today. Amri Yahyah, who replaced Safiq Rahim as the captain, converted a Nazirul Naim Che Hashim cutback inside the penalty box in the 10th minute for the winning goal. With the win, Malaysia leapfrogged Timor Leste to fourth position in Group A with four points.
Incidentally, Amri had also scored against Timor Leste when Malaysia met them for the first time in the 2004 Tiger Cup. It was also Malaysia’s first win in a World Cup qualifying match since the 2-1 success over Taiwan in 2011. Kim Swee had to reshuffle his midfield after the Asian Football Confederation confirmed that Safiq had to serve suspension in the match. Malaysia thought his second yellow card of the tournament against Saudi Arabia on Sept 8 did not count after Fifa nullified the match and awarded a 3-0 win to the Middle East team for crowd trouble at Shah Alam Stadium. Razman Roslan lined up alongside Aidil Zafuan Radzak and wing-backs Matthew Davies and Nazirul Naim in defence in front of goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat. Baddrol Baktiar anchored the midfield with Terengganu’s Ismail Faruqi Asha’ri, who made his first appearance since 2011, while out wide, S. Kunanlan and Azamuddin Akil were in support of forwards Amri and Safee Sali.

The win did not come easy as Timor Leste, led by six naturalised players from Brazil, controlled possession in the second half. Goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi was the hero when he made splendid saves to deny attempts from Rodrigo Sousa (71st) and Adelino Oliveira (73rd). Substitute D. Christie Jayaseelan almost extended Malaysia’s lead in stoppage time but his grounder hit the side netting. Malaysia next play Palestine in Hebron on Nov 12.
