Things got ugly quickly in Japan’s parliament on Thursday, where lawmakers from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ruling coalition were trying to put security-related bills to a committee vote while opposition members attempted to prevent that from happening.
Lawmakers from the ruling bloc created a scrum around committee chairman Yoshitada Konoike. Those opposing the bills tried to pull them off, including the Democratic Party of Japan’s Hiroyuki Konishi, who was seen attempting a dive play onto the group.
The bills were likely to pass through the upper house Friday despite the resistance, but opposition parties were expected to delay the vote for as long as possible.
Although Japanese have a reputation for polite behavior, this is hardly the first time scuffles have broken out in parliament. Here are some highlights from the past.
