http://www.tremeritus.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/manifesto.jpg?fbc256When
the government puts out its manifesto, they are publicly declaring their intent
for the country and its future. When the government publicly declares that
intent, surely their aim is to move towards achieving that since they believe in
it strongly enough to make that intent public. Their intent does have an impact
on us because being the government, they formulate the very policies that affect
our lives and those of our children’s.

In 2011, PAP’s manifesto was “Securing our future together”.

Today, with the continued influx of educated foreigners competing for jobs with
Singaporean PMETs, do the majority of white-collared Singaporean workers feel
their future is secure? Is your job as a technician, engineer, manager,
administrator, receptionist, accountant, bank executive, customer service
officer more secure today? Or are you now down grading your expectations and
re-training to drive a taxi / bus, security guard, freelance property /
insurance agent? Even our local doctors were told at a recent forum organised by
NUS they could be easily replaced with cheaper foreigners when they complained
about the long hours and working conditions. For decades, Singaporeans have been
told to upgrade so we can compete in a global market, today, we are told to
downgrade our jobs, our expectations, our aspirations, our living standards, our
quality of life, and those of our children’s as well.

In 2006, PAP’s manifesto was “Staying together, moving
ahead”. PAP talked about creating opportunities for Singaporeans,
giving the young the best start, encouraging every citizen to play a role,
providing affordable healthcare for all.

Whether you are a PAP supporter or not, do you feel you have more
opportunities in your country today to excel, to succeed, to live your dream? Do
you feel you can play a role even if it’s pointing out to the PAP government
what you think is going wrong for Singapore? Have you moved ahead in life? Have
you moved closer to your aspirations in your homeland? Is healthcare affordable
to you if you have a young family or if you have a chronic illness? If you are a
low to medium income earner and you needed an x-ray today, could you afford to
pay the out-of-pocket cost? If you had to go to A&E today, are you free of
concerns for what the bill might be, what the wait time might be and what
quality of care you would receive?

Could you comfortably afford the tuition costs and extracurricular activities
costs for your child? If you couldn’t, do you feel your child still has the best
head start in life in Singapore?

PAP’s 2001 manifesto was removed from their website and any other links that
came up in my search. I wonder why but maybe some of you would be able to recall
it. What I could find were the phrases “forging a new social compact”;
“fostering a more rounded, participative and cohesive society”. I wonder if that
was a clue of things to come in the decade after 2001 – the huge influx of
foreigners, not just blue-collared workers, but from all walks of life. Did
those who voted for PAP unwittingly voted for a new social fabric in Singapore,
one that includes massive numbers of foreigners who have now been openly told by
our PM, no less, that Singapore belongs, not just to Singaporeans, but to
everyone? Was that the new social compact PAP was forging? Are we a more
cohesive society today?

When PAP releases their manifesto in this election, do scrutinise it
carefully and critique it with benefit of hindsight. You don’t want to be
blindsided and find out 10, 15 years later that you actually signed up to an
unpalatable new order in 2015 that committed your children and grandchildren to
a mediocre and lifeless
future.
