Ask Tomo Anything: How the girls of Hong Kong and Taiwan become TomoGirls — TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7nwtdXuKME

All of the Tomo Girls footage comes from Tomo News’s sister company Apple Daily, which sends reporters out to college campuses, yoga studios and trade shows in search of up-and-coming Taiwanese models. It's part of the media culture here in Taiwan. Chicks get clicks.

Look at it this way. Topless Page-3 girls have long been a part of British newspaper culture. And Germany's Bild has the Bild girls. In Hong Kong and Taiwan, this is how it's done. You could think of the TomoGirls as Tomo News version of the Page 3, just with their tops still on.

Tomogirl Yuling fell for sports star Jeremy Lin during Linsanity and loves basketball too-TomoNews:

Published on Aug 12, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! It’s that time again! So say hello to Yuling!

Yuling’s a big basketball fan and started playing in high school. She admits she was one of the girls who came down with Linsanity. A widespread fan obsession in Asia caused by Jeremy Lin.

Yuling says she supports her sports crush Jeremy Lin because he has ties to Taiwan. She once tried to catch a glimpse of the overnight sensation when he was coaching a basketball summer camp for kids in Taiwan.

NBA basketball player Jeremy Lin exploded into the public’s awareness in 2012 after unexpectedly leading a winning turn around with the New York Knicks. That game made Jeremy Lin a household name and earned him fangirls all over the world, including starry-eyed Yuling.

Shilin Night Market is one of the most famous and largest night markets in Taiwan. The night market opened in 1899 and is famous for its variety of eateries selling authentic Taiwanese xiaochi.

So visiting a night market in Taiwan should definitely be on your To Do List if you visit and you may even run into Tomogirl Jennifer!

Tomogirl Sherry: Her dream job would be to land a role as a hot babe in a Bond movie – TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wxyZj222P8

Published on Aug 23, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! Say hello to Sherry. She’s just turned 23 and wants to go into acting. Right now Sherry’s just working as a model.

Sherry said that her dream role would be to land a part as Bond girl.

The inspiration for all the Bond girls is said to be 007 author Ian Fleming’s one time lover Muriel Wright.

Wright was 26 when she and Fleming met in 1935. A talented rider, skier, and polo player, Wright was independently wealthy and a model. She died in an air raid in 1944, which devastated Fleming and cemented her legacy in every Bond girl to appear in Fleming’s James Bond novels.

Hopefully, if Sherry does land a role as a Bond girl, she won’t fall in love with the double-oh-seven, because if the feeling is mutual the Bond girl is usually doomed to an early and violent death.

Let’s hope Sherry dodges that bullet!

Tomogirl Xiaoya: She loves a relaxing afternoon with tea and cakes – TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCIhLky1Bss

Published on Aug 26, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hey everyone! It’s that time again! So let’s get started!

This here, today, is Xiaoya. She’s a shy kind of gal who didn’t share much with us aside from the fact that her favorite meal of the day is afternoon tea. A little random, doncha think?

Anyway, tea was introduced in England in the mid 17th century and the popularity of afternoon tea is largely credited to Anna Maria Russell, Duchess of Bedford. For the wealthy upper class afternoon tea became a luxury with sandwiches and biscuits. For the working class afternoon tea became a break time from their daily labors.

Afternoon tea is now a very cute affair in Taiwan, with cafes decorated in pinks and purples and pastels. The influence comes from Japan where cafes primarily serve sweets and cater mostly to women.

Those are all the reasons Xiaoya loves her afternoon tea.

School wants to blacklist teacher for sexy lingerie photos on her Facebook account – TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-irDso_kF4

Published on Aug 27, 2015
NANTOU, TAIWAN — In Taiwan, a junior high school principal and several parents have attempted to blacklist a part time substitute teacher, Miss Chen Yiyu, and they want to bar her from teaching at schools.

So what’s all the fuss about?

The principal, backed by several parents, insists that Miss Chen is a poor example to students since Miss Chen’s other part time job is working as lingerie model.

After working at the junior high school in Nantou, the principal did some sleuthing on the Internet and Facebook stalked the young teacher. The principal discovered that Miss Chen regularly posted photos from her modeling shoots and sometimes bad mouthed co-workers or politicians and even went so far as to use cuss words.

Miss Chen doesn’t understand what the fuss is about, she says that she’s a good teacher and she conducts and dresses herself appropriately at school. She says the problem is with other teachers and parents who want to smear her reputation by implying a few sexy photos makes her a prostitute.

Miss Chen said they’re all a bunch of bullies, and bullies she can handle. She says she was once voted ‘ugliest girl of the year’ by her classmates when she was in middle school.

Some parents said that Miss Chen’s presence in a school would make boys unable to focus on their studies and give them ‘weird ideas’ about women. Other parents are worried that their daughters will get ideas and start dressing provocatively when they’re out of their school uniforms.

But it’s not like Miss Chen dressed up sexy and stripped down to her skivvies while she was teaching class. Aren’t people allowed to have a life outside of work anymore?

Sexy Chinese hacker SexyCyborg hides cyber-intrusion tools in her high heels – TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vo3s2RUFvv4

Published on Aug 28, 2015
BEIJING — A hot Chinese hacker named SexyCyborg has 3D-printed a pair of shoes with hidden compartments for hidden Wi-fi testing tools that would allow her to secretly gain access to corporate computers.

In order to gain entry into a facility, SexyCyborg says she could use her body, which she happens to cover up very little, as even secure facilities typically don't check shoes.

"I think there's a reasonable chance that a guy might invite me back to their office after a few drinks in the neighborhood," she said in an interview. "But a handbag would be suspicious and leaving cell phones at the gate would be standard practice in any reasonably secure facility."

"My typical clothing does not leave room to hide anything - which is all the more reason they would not be suspicious of me," she continued.

Once inside a facility, she says she'd theoretically have access to a slew of equipment found in the heels. These include a wireless router running OpenWRT with a built-in rechargeable battery, a USB keystroke recorder, a retractable ethernet cable and a lock pick.

The wireless router could either be left running inside her shoes for wi-fi sniffing and logging even while walking or be removed and plugged into a open network jack to have instant remote access to the victim's computer and monitor as well as what they're typing on their keyboard.

SexyCyborg, who says she made the shoes with a 3D printer, has published the designs online for anyone to download.

Whether or not this hacking trick even works remains to be seen, but going public with the details of how it works will probably make any future hack attempt by SexyCyborg all the more difficult.

Tomogirl Xuxu: Here to teach you a little history about Japan’s colonization of Taiwan – TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpzmlOMEtU8

Published on Aug 30, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Konnichiwa minna-san! That means ‘good afternoon’ in Japanese. It’s how we’re going to welcome today’s Tomogirl Xuxu. Konnichiwa Xuxu!

Xuxu’s 21 and studying in Taiwan as an international student. She’s actually Japanese and loves her cosplay. Xuxu says Taiwan is very friendly to Japanese and she feels totally comfortable living here.

Actually, Taiwan used to be a Japanese colony from 1895 to 1945. Taiwan was Japan’s first overseas colony and Japanese intentions were to turn the island into a “model colony”. So Japan made a lot of efforts to improve the island’s economy, industry, public works, and to change its culture.

Some conflicts flared up on the island as Japan attempted to make the local population behave more like Japanese society, and learning Japanese as a language also became a requirement.

Although Taiwan hasn’t been a Japanese colony for 70 years, Japanese like Xuxu continue to visit and study and have a good time.

Tomogirl candidate Lin publically shames guy for showing his balls at library – TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CrqoCLoznw

Published on Aug 31, 2015
NANTOU, TAIWAN — The public library is a good spot to hang out, enjoy the air conditioning, and get some reading done, doncha think?

It’s Tomogirl candidate Lin’s favorite spot to go. Lin’s from Nantou, which is in the south of Taiwan, and she enjoys reading or biking when the weather’s nice.

Unfortunately, Lin got the shock of her life when she spotted this man curled up on a bench absorbed in a good book. That’s because the man’s balls were hanging out and enjoying the comfortable air in the library as well.

Lin took a quick video and reported the man to the library staff. The library staff told her they actually knew about him and had already notified the police a few times before, but the police said that since the man wasn’t showing his penis and wasn’t making any lewd gestures, there wasn’t anything they could do about it.

So that’s why Lin turned to the media! She’s hoping that with this video and information out there, the unidentified man will be too ashamed to come back and show his face, or his balls, at the public library ever again.

It just seems a little mean spirited, I mean, couldn’t Lin just help the poor guy with his sense of fashion and convince him to wear slightly longer shorts? I mean, maybe they just slipped out by accident! ...again.

Tomogirl Mayi does cup trick while twerking, she’s also a paid club dancer- TomoNews:

Russian dance school twerk video: http://$$$$$$$/1CN6Gky

TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! Today we’re introducing Tomogirl Mayi who’s learned how to work her body with some twerking. Mayi has been working as a dancer in a local club in Taipei for a few years, but she only just started learning how to twerk last year.

The etymology of the word twerk is often debated. Some suggestions are that the word twerk represents a contraction of “footwork”or a portmanteau of the words “twist”and “jerk.” The Oxford dictionary suggests it could be alteration of “work it.

Twerk was added to the Oxford Dictionary Online in 2013, but they acknowledge the word has been around for 20 years.

The fashionable gluteal gyration appears in the music videos of many popular artists such as Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, and Nicki Minaj.

Twerking’s pretty common now, although it has created controversy as it gained in popularity. For instance, when a Russian dance school uploaded a viral video of their girls twerking, the online frenzy also drew the attention of the Kremlin. Many official voices in Russia condemned the video as vulgar and insulting.

Russia’s Investigative Committee was concerned the dancers were mostly girls under the age of 18.

You can check out our coverage of that story in the link provided down in the description.

http://$$$$$$$/1CN6Gky

Mayi won’t face any such restrictions here in Taiwan, so maybe she could start her own dance school and offer twerking classes. Do you think she’s good enough to teach women how to work it?

Japanese AV star graces Taipei’s metro swipe card, 15,000 set sells out in 4 hours – TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1llOww7o-Aw

Published on Sep 3, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Sex sells, and Taipei’s transit authority officials know it. The transit authority calls their metrocard the “EasyCard”, a name they chose to express how easy it is to use, and it’s pretty cheap too.

And now the EasyCard has a face too. Meet Yui Hatano, she’s 27-years-old, Japanese, and has become the face of Taipei’s EasyCard. She’s also a porn star.

So how on earth did a Japanese porn star end up on Taiwan’s EasyCards? It apparently began with a demand from Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je that the EasyCard company double its business.

The company printed 15,000 two-card sets and sold them through a telephone hotline after merchants refused to sell the cards due to public outrage and pressure. Both cards show a fully clothed Yui Hatano, one labeled “Angels” and the other “Demons”. The phones started lighting up when they went on sale at midnight and the entire run of 15,000 two-card sets were sold out a little after 4 am.

Parents, women’s groups, and politicians have all been vocal in their disapproval of the special-edition cards, arguing they demean women and send the wrong message to children. Parents are especially worried that the cards will spark ‘strange ideas’ in the minds of young adolescent males. Clearly, they have no experience with the average teenage boy.

Despite parental outrage that the EasyCard is now become a SleazyCard, the company did make a pretty penny and may consider another special-edition set of the cards. The question is, will it still feature Ms. Yui Hatano or will they recruit another AV star? And who would it be?

Tomogirl Yumi gets corny talking about the legend behind her zodiac sign, pop on in – TomoNews:

Published on Sep 8, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! It’s that time of the week again! So say hello to Yumi! Yumi’s name actually means ‘corn’. Yup, just like the vegetable… er… fruit.

Anyway, she’s 22 and her sign is Capri’corn’.

I wonder if she knows that the Capricorn has been consistently represented as a hybrid of a goat and a fish for thousands of years?

In Greek mythology, the constellation is sometimes identified as Amalthea, the goat that suckled the infant Zeus after his mother saved him from being devoured by his father, Cronos. The goat’s broken horn was transformed into the cornucopia or horn of plenty we see most often depicted during Thanksgiving.

It’s not the most exciting legend behind a constellation, but it’s definitely the most giving among the legends. And it’s a good thing Yumi was so giving with her time and spent a few minutes with us!

Tomogirls love their exercise, come meet a group of Tomogirls into mixed martial arts – TomoNews:

TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! This week we’d like to introduce you to a whole group of Tomogirls who love practicing mixed martial arts!

First there’s: Yui!

Then Lindy Mei, she’s half-Taiwanese and half-Italian.

Jamie is also of mixed parentage. She’s half-Thai and half-American.

AnAn!

Xiao Tong.

And Mia!

These six girls are gym buddies and love practicing martial arts together.

Mixed martial arts was originally promoted as a competition with the intention of finding the most effective martial arts for real-world unarmed combat situations. Initially there were only a few rules.

The concept of combining multiple martial arts was popularized in America by legendary Kung Fu film star, Bruce Lee. Lee believed that “the best fighter is not a boxer, karate, or judo man. The best fighter is someone who can adapt to any style, to be formless, to adopt an individual’s own style and not following the system of styles.

So it might be time to go join your local MMA gym and maybe meet cuties like Yui, Lindy Mei, Jamie, AnAn, Xiao Tong, and Mia!

Ready, set, fight!

TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! This week’s Tomogirl is Yixuan. She’s just 21 and sadly unemployed at the moment.

Yixuan says she wants to a model, but then again almost all of our Tomogirls have that particular dream. We think Yixuan would make it best as commercial model. That’s because most catwalk models are at least 5’8” and Yixuan’s just 5’2”.

Next Yixuan will need to create a portfolio. Since Yixuan’s just getting started as a model her portfolio might be a little sparse, but that’s okay. She can have a friend take a few photos and include her Tomogirl video too.

Then she’ll need to submit it to agencies and go to as many casting calls as she can. Hopefully starring in her very own Tomogirl video will give her a push in the right direction.

So maybe you’ll see Yixuan on Asia’s Next Top Model someday.

Kappa AV movie: Japan produces weird adult movie about hungry female kappa monster – TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRMn9ql0KOE

Published on Sep 17, 2015
TOKYO — Japan’s adult video industry has a reputation for producing weird movies and even weirder animated porn, generally referred to as hentai.

But would you ever expect an AV movie starring the Japanese mythical creature known as the ‘kappa’?

So first of all, what exactly is a kappa? A kappa is a Japanese folklore creature, a kind of water demon who lure humans into rivers or ponds, then drown them and eat them.

The legends also claim that a kappa’s favorite food is a cucumber. Traditionally, people worried about dying by drowning would carve their names into a cucumber and lob the vegetable into the supposedly kappa infested waters.

So of course, the cucumber had a star role in the AV movie and many cucumbers were fed to the captured female kappa.

Later, a male actor in the movie led out an entire string of kappas, all hungry for more cucumbers.

Are you at all weirded out by all this?

Tomogirl Qiyou is also a catgirl, popular in Japan and also at Nekocon – TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70_MoFVql_M

Published on Sep 22, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Meow! Hello everyone! It’s that time again. Say hello to Qiyou. As you might have noticed Qiyou is a cat lover.

Today Qiyou is decked out as a cat girl. A catgirl is a female character with feline traits, such as cat ears, a cat tail, or other feline characteristics on an otherwise human body. In Japanese anime and manga they are more commonly referred to as nekomimi, which literally means cat ears.

The portrayal of catgirls in Japan goes back to at least 1924 in a story by Kenji Miyazawa. But Japan doesn’t hold the monopoly on catgirls. In America DC Comics created Catwoman and Cheetah back in 1940.

Catgirls are so popular nowadays there is even a convention called Nekocon held annually in Hampton, Virginia. The con has an attendance cap of 1,600 passes due to fire code regulations.

So if catgirl Qiyou wants to attend Nekocon, she’ll need to get her pass early.

Ooh! I think a saw a putty-tat!

Tomogirl Caiting loves being pretty and knows something about the history of cosmetics- TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vY0c2D9YlEk

Published on Sep 22, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! Here to welcome you back is Caiting. Caiting’s just 18 and her favorite hobby is making herself look pretty. She loves shopping for the latest cosmetics.

The word cosmetics derives from Greek, meaning “technique of dress and ornament.”

History can trace the use of cosmetics back 5,000 years to ancient Sumerians who wore lipstick to the ancient Egyptians who used kohl as eyeliner. However, some dyes used for cosmetics caused serious illness. For example, the white paste many Japanese geishas used to paint their faces were laced with lead and caused cancer and lead poisoning.

The cosmetics business really began booming in the 20th century and beauty products are widely available. In recent years there has been a growing trend among men who use cosmetics, particularly concealer to hide skin flaws.

Aw. But Caiting doesn’t really need all that! Caiting, we think you’re plenty cute already!

Tomogirl Shannon at CKS memorial and explain the phenomenon of ghost bike memorials- TomoNews:

Published on Sep 20, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Greetings and salutations Tomogirl fans! It’s that time of the week again!

This week our Tomogirl is Shannon. She’s just 16 and a high school student at a local Taipei international school.

We met Shannon at one of the concert halls that flank the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall in Taipei. Chiang Kai-Shek was a Chinese political and military leader from 1928-1975.

A memorial is an object which serves as a focus for the memory of something, usually a person who has died or an event.

An example of a small memorial, but maybe a more meaningful one, is a ghost bike. A ghost bike is a bicycle painted white and set up as a roadside memorial where a cyclist has been killed or severely injured. They also serve as reminders to motorists to share the road. The first recorded ghost bike appearance was in St. Louis, Missouri in 2003.

So Shannon please remember to stay safe on the roads!

Tomogirl Chenchen loves graffiti art and we’ll tell you something about the Berlin Wall – TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpVa93hckPk

Published on Oct 4, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! Today’s Tomogirl is Chenchen. She’s 23 and loves classical music and art, so today she’s checking out some local graffiti.

Graffiti was considered to be vandalism for years, but recently has become more widely accepted as a form of public art.

The Berlin Wall was the largest canvas in the world, a popular spot for artists from all over the world as well as tourists. The West Berlin side of the wall had artwork completely covering the wall, while the East Berlin side was kept blank.

Much of the art work on the Berlin wall was not claimed by artists and remains anonymous. Although, in 1990 the Berlin Wall was torn down and now only exists in places such as Potsdamer Platz, Muhlenstrasse, and Bernauer Strasse. Some art pieces were restored by artists for the East Side Gallery, a popular tourist destination for history lovers and graffiti lovers.

Perhaps someday Chenchen will get a chance to visit the East Side Gallery.

Tomogirl Wabi’s favorite past time in chatting up a storm with girlfriend- TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOKmpIdaBIo

Published on Oct 8, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! Today’s Tomogirl is named Wabi, so say hello! She’s 21 years old and her favorite hobby is chit-chatting with friends. Ooh, exciting.

But that brings up the age old question: Do women talk more than men?

A study from Harvard concluded: “It depends.” It depends on many different factors, include the social context in which the talk is taking place, the kind of talk involved, and the social confidence of the speakers. This is effected by social roles and their familiarity with the topic.

One Chinese proverb speaks to the power of a woman speaker: “The tongue is the sword of a woman and she never lets it become rusty.” So maybe Wabi is just practicing and sharpening discourse, then someday she’ll whip out her sharp wit and equally sharp tongue and cut someone down to size.

Tomogirl Miu Miu is a tourist from Hong Kong who wants to share some travel info- TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWA1cH-MCfg

Published on Oct 15, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! It’s that time of the week again, so say hello to Miu Miu. Miu Miu’s a 19 year old tourist from Hong Kong visiting Taiwan for the week.

Miu Miu says she comes to Taiwan to relax, since it’s not as densely populated as Hong Kong. In fact, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places in the world and also boasts the most skyscrapers of any city in the world.

New York City falls short by 50-60 skyscrapers when competing with Hong Kong.

The name Hong Kong means “fragrant harbor”. The name was originally given to current day’s Aberdeen Harbor back in 1842.

Miu Miu may be one of the locals who joke about where the term “fragrant” came from, but the actual reason is believed to be a result of factories which lined the water burning incense. Incense was an export commodity back in 1842, so it makes sense Hong Kong smelled great back in the day.

Well, Miu Miu, hope the rest of your trip is fantastic!

Published on Nov 11, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! Today we’re introducing Tomogirl Bubbles! She loves sports and biking. Bubbles also loves the water and is a licensed lifeguard.

Since Taiwan is an island nation with plenty of beaches, it’s easy for Bubbles to find a job at a sunny beach. She loves being outdoors, no matter the weather.

She also says that being a lifeguard is more than just watching out for people, it’s also about teaching them to be safe.

A lack of education about water safety or local conditions, or a lack of safety advice, can result in drowning. There are also other things to worry about such as a lack of protection, like flotation devices for weak swimmers, and lack of supervision can also result in catastrophe.

So Bubbles will be there to keep an eye out, as well as enjoying the fun and sun.

Published on Nov 15, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! It’s that time again! Say hello to Tiffany, she’s 21 and loves singing, dancing, and swimming.

Tiffany is also a big fan of Japanese nail art. Since Japan is just a short flight away, Taiwan’s fashion is heavily influenced by Japan. It also helps that Japan is one of the most fashionable countries in the world, although their style can be different from what most Westerners consider to be the ‘norm’.

Nails are no exception when it comes to being fashionable. Japanese nail art can often be flashy and bit over the top, but the 3D art style definitely catches your eye.

Japanese nail art uses lots of rhinestones, glitter, and 3D stick ons. They can also showcase popular cartoon characters, the most popular one probably being Hello Kitty.

If you aren’t already familiar with Hello Kitty, she’s a cartoon cat girl that can be found on all sorts of products, so mounting her face on your fingernails just amps the cute factor to 11.

Tomogirl Teddy is a model and is cute and cuddly just like a teddy bear – TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EU72N7SrcFo

Published on Nov 18, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! Say ‘Hi’ to Tomogirl Teddy. Teddy--yup, just like teddy bear--has been a model for 3 years and loves her job.

She also likes exercising and swimming to maintain her muscle tone. She’s originally from Kaohsiung, a port city located in the south of Taiwan and the second largest city on the island.

Did you know that the teddy bear is named after American President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt?

Morris Michtom, a toymaker, saw a political cartoon of President Roosevelt reportedly refusing to shoot a cornered bear during a hunt and was inspired to create America’s first teddy bear. The tiny soft bear was displayed in his shop’s show window with a sign “Teddy’s bear.”

At the same time in Germany another toymaker, unaware of Michtom’s bear, produced a stuffed bear. The toy was exhibited at the Leipzig Toy fair in March 1903.

So do you think Tomogirl Teddy is cute enough to be cuddled just like a stuffed teddy bear?

Tomogirl Cookie is a sweetheart and she loves to dance the night away – TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8CX2DaXi6A

Published on Nov 22, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! Welcome back to Tomogirls! Today we’re introducing Tomogirl Cookie.

Did you ever wonder where the word ‘cookie’ came from? It’s actually originally Dutch!

Anyway, back to Tomogirl Cookie. Cookie works as a nightclub dancer and, of course, loves dancing! Hm. Wonder if she has any other hobbies?

The dancers you commonly find in nightclubs nowadays are a continuation of go-go dancers hired by club promoters in the 1960’s. Allegedly, it all got started when women jumped up on the tables in the Peppermint Lounge in New York City to do the twist.

Customers were so entertained by the ladies that club owners and promoters realized this was an opportunity to keep the customers coming back. The other theory about go-go dancers is that the trend got started at an LA club called Whiskey A Go-Go, hence the name go-go dancer.

Think Cookie’s sweet face and moves will bring in the customers?

TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! It’s that time of the week again, so say hello to Tomogirl Mimi.

Mimi’s just 17 and her hobby is dancing. She’s also a Sagittarius.

Hmm... Wonder if she knows that the Sagittarius is usually a centaur, half man and half horse, and is also an archer. Sometimes the Zodiac sign is also referred to as the Archer.

The image of the Sagittarius is believed to be based on Chiron, a centaur from Greek mythology, even though Chiron has his own astrological symbol already known as the constellation Centaurus.

Chiron was the most intelligent, kind, and civilized among the centaurs and was also known as the mentor to many Greek heroes. Many of his pupils went on to become legends of their own, such as Achilles, Ajax, Theseus, Jason, Perseus, and in some legends, Hercules.

As for those born under the sign of Sagittarius, their horoscope says they’re intelligent but can be unemotional.

Thankfully, Tomogirl Mimi seems like a happy gal.

Jupiter is a tattoo artist. She says she’s always loved to draw ever since she was a little girl and tattooing was a way for her art to be displayed to the public. Jupiter says she likes watching her drawings come to life on a living canvas.

Tattoos are still viewed as being socially taboo in Taiwan, particularly for women, as tattoos are still generally considered something only ‘bad kids’ or ‘gangsters’ would want.

Jupiter says the world is changing and she hopes that tattoos in Taiwan will someday become as accepted as they are in America and Europe. She points out that it takes a lot of talent, skill, and hard work to become a good tattoo artist.

Jupiter wants to continue to work as a tattoo artist and model after she graduates from university.

Tomogirl Yuna loves her sausage dog, a little history on the dachshund – TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeT6JVXERFQ

Published on Nov 29, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! Say hello to Tomogirl Yuna, who has a pet Dachshund, also known as a Doxin.

The word Dachshund Sausages was originally also the name of a brand of German sausages, named after the dog breed. The German word “hund” actually means dog, so the brand name Dachshund was later shortened to “hot dog”. So it’s the food that resembles the dog, not the other way around.

Did you know that doxins appeared as early as the 15th century in Germany when breeders crossbred a pincher with a French basset hound, then later with a spaniel and a wire-haired terrier? But these cute little guys were never meant to be lapdogs, since the German name for the breed means “badger” and “dog”.

The dogs were bred to catch prey both above and below ground. They’re also little dogs with big brave hearts, after all, they’re supposed to go after any sorts of prey in dark narrow tunnels.

It’s no wonder people love the doxin. So don’t mess with Yuna, she’s got a fierce protector.

Published on Dec 1, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! Today’s Tomogirl is ChiChi. She’s 21 and loves to play with models, that is model figurines. It’s so unusual! Since most of our Tomogirls love singing, dancing, and shopping.

Chichi’s hobby is assembling garage kits or resin kits. The kits are often model figures portraying humans or other living creatures. In Japan, where Taiwan gets most of its kits imported from, kits often depict anime characters.

Originally garage kits were amateur-produced by hobbyists who were unable to find model kits of subjects they wanted on the market, so they began producing kits of their own. As the market expanded, professional companies began making similar kits. Sometimes a distinction is made between true garage kits, made by amateurs, and resin kits, manufactured professionally by companies.

When assembling a figurine, the parts are glued together using Super Glue or an epoxy cement and then painted.

Who’d have thought ChiChi would have such an interesting hobby, so remember, never judge a book by its cover!

Tomogirl Qiqi loves the Japanese anime genre of magical girls and zombies – TomoNews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8XfDWl0aEk

Published on Dec 6, 2015
TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! Say hello to Chen Roufan, although she prefers to go by her nickname Qiqi.

Tomogirl Qiqi confesses she’s something of a homebody and prefers watching copious hours of anime on her couch. She really loves the magical girl genre.

Magical girls is a subgenre of Japanese fantasy anime and manga which primarily features girls who use magic.

Manga and anime historians regard the Princess Knight manga, released in 1953, as a prototype of the magical girl genre. Himitsu no Akko-chan, serialized in 1962, is regarded as the earliest magical girl manga.

As of 2010, there was a notable increase in series portraying “magical boys” in protagonist roles instead of supporting roles. One of Tomogirl Qiqi’s favorites was “Is this a Zombie?” in which a zombie is resurrected by a necromancer after being killed by a serial killer. The zombie inadvertently gains ‘magical girl’ powers and becomes a ‘magical boy’ but is also forced to crossdress due to the magical girl transformation sequence.

Thankfully, we’ve got Tomogirl Qiqi to explain it to us because, honestly, that series sounds like a hot mess.

TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! Meet Tomogirl JingJing, who today is working as a showgirl for Evian.

Evian is a brand of mineral water which comes from several sources near Evian-les-Bains, on the south shore of Lake Geneva, France.

In popular culture, Evian is portrayed as a luxury and expensive bottled water. Murder mystery writer Agatha Christie mentions it in her famous Murder on the Orient Express.

Doctors in late 18th century France began prescribing Evian as a ‘miraculous’ water and health remedy. Many nobles began drinking Evian water and claimed that their health improved after drinking it.

Eventually, a mineral water company was founded and began bottling water from the spring in 1829. As of 2012 Evian’s slogan is “Live Young”, which is why they recruit cute young girls like JingJing to help represent the company.

TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone and say hello to Tomogirl PaoPao! She loves dancing, listening to music, watching movies, and exercising to stay fit.

Tomogirl PaoPao is also sporting a long camo cardigan.

I wonder if she knows that the English word “camouflage” was borrowed from French and means “to disguise”. France was the first country to establish a military team dedicated to stealth attire in 1915. I guess it’s because they realized that the stylish white gloves and bright red pantaloons of their uniforms made them a really good target for German troops.

But wearing camo as a fashion statement became popular during the 1980’s and consumers today can find the familiar motif in oddly conspicuous colors, like neon orange, bright red, and hot pink. Christian Dior even created camo couture with evening gowns made of shiny sequins and blotchy earth tones. Hm.

Wonder if she knows that Adidas and Puma were once owned by brothers? Adidas is a German brand, the name comes from a portmanteau of the owner’s name. Adolf Dassler was often called “Adi” by friends and family, so the Adidas brand name is a combination of his nickname and the first three letters of his last name.

“Adi” Dassler and his brother Rudolf “Rudi” Dassler began making sports shoes before the second world war, but a rivalry and a few misunderstandings between the brothers brought about a split in the company.

“Rudi” Dassler would later go on to build a new firm he called “Ruda”, also a portmanteau of his own name. The company would later be renamed Puma.

Well, we can see which side of the brotherly rivalry Emma has chosen to stand on since she’s such an Adidas fan.

Working in PR can be tricky, particularly if a scandal hits the company. According to Tomogirl Sheila when a PR crisis hits it can be a time of confusion, anxiety, and distraction. It’s also when there’s a barrage of questions from media and customers.

Tomogirl Sheila says it’s important to maintain good communications during a crisis or else risk damaging the company’s reputation even further. The company CEO may want to hold a series of interviews to be clear on the company’s position and own up to any mistakes, but show strength by reassuring the public that the company will strive to improve standards.

Hopefully nothing like that will happen to Tomogirl Sheila.

TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! Wave hello to Tomogirl XiaoYang. She works as a part time model and when she isn’t modeling she loves playing the piano, drawing, swimming, or going out to the movies.

Tomogirl XiaoYang says she likes the pigtail look and thinks the trend is making a comeback.

However, the pigtail looks has always been popular in Japan and has an almost cult-like following. The pigtail, or as they’re called in Japan “twintail” is more popular than ever there.

Tomogirl XiaoYang is wearing her hair in what is known as the “country style” pigtail-look where the hair is tied just below the ears. Other styles are the “regular style” with the hair tied up right above the area behind the ears and the “rabbit style” with the hair tied near the top of the head.

A popular anime character Sailor Moon is always sporting the “rabbit style” look for pigtails, which is why her name in Japanese means “bunny”.

So do you think the look works for Tomogirl XiaoYang?

Circle lenses extend the appearance of the iris by having a dark tinted area surrounding the center. The result is the appearance of a bigger, wider iris, giving the wearer more of a dolls’ eyes look.

Personally, we find the look to be a little creepy, but hey it’s all about looking cute according to your society’s beauty standards! So in Taiwan Tomogirl Amber is considered a definite cutie!

TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! Today’s Tomogirl is Lena and she’s 27-years-old. In her free time she enjoys exercising and swimming.

Tomogirl Lena is a professional model and today she’s working for TutorABC, a company that offers online English classes. Mandarin Chinese is Taiwan’s official language, but everyone feels the pressure to learn English since it is considered a global lingua franca.

English is the official language of almost 60 sovereign states and is the third most common native language in the world, after Mandarin and Spanish. It is the most widely learned second language and is the official language of the United Nations and the European Union.

Wow, no wonder there’s such pressure for non-native speakers of English to learn the language. But remember, don’t ever make fun of anyone who speaks English with a foreign accent, because that means they speak more than one language!

TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Hello everyone! Today’s Tomogirl is Rin, she’s just 17 and loves singing and fashion.

Fashion in Taiwan is heavily influenced by fashions in Japan and Tomogirl Rin is an example of the ganguro trend.

Ganguro is an alternative fashion trend among young Japanese women that started in the mid 1990’s, distinguished by a dark tan, contrasting makeup, and blond hair. It goes against the typical Asian concept of beauty which is pale skin, dark hair, and neutral makeup tones. Ganguro girls swing to the complete opposite of these traditional beauty concepts by tanning, bleaching their hair, and often use colorful makeup in unusual ways.

Tomogirl Rin says she’s still got to keep it toned down, but she’s got the hair down pat.
