SINGAPORE: As long as Singapore maintains the "tight nexus" between the Government and people, the country can overcome its challenges, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Chan Chun Sing on Thursday (Aug 13).

At Tanjong Pagar's annual National Day celebration dinner, Mr Chan took stock of how Singapore defied the odds to be where it is today. He said the reason Singapore has achieved this "miracle" in the past 50 years is because citizens and the Government worked as one united team.

Conspicuously missing from Thursday's dinner was the late former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. Mr Lee, who had been MP for Tanjong Pagar for 60 years since 1955 had made it a point to attend the constituency's National Day Dinner every year, even when his health was not too good.

A tribute video was played in honour of Mr Lee, giving the thousand residents and grassroots leaders present a moment of reflection.

MPs WILL FOLLOW LEE KUAN YEW'S EXAMPLE: CHAN CHUN SING

Mr Chan said his fellow Tanjong Pagar MPs will follow Mr Lee's example such that "every living moment of our lives, we will always have the interests of Tanjong Pagar at heart; to always crack our heads, to ask ourselves how else we can better take care of our people".

"I can assure you that no matter how tired my team and I may be, we will continue to do our very best for Tanjong Pagar and for Singapore and I look forward to working closely with you and I look forward to your support for us, to continue the dream that Mr Lee started,” said Mr Chan.

“(This is) so that we can continue to defy the odds for more generations to come. That our younger generation can continue to be proud to be called Singaporeans because each generation is determined to leave behind something better for the next,” he added.

Fellow MP Indranee Rajah spoke of the legacy Mr Lee left behind and how Tanjong Pagar has changed over the years with various improvements to the estate. She pointed out that when Mr Lee first stood for election, he chose Tanjong Pagar as it was one of the poorest places in Singapore.

She said Mr Lee was determined to transform the area and that he did, with the support of residents.

"We all miss Mr Lee but the dream that he and the Pioneer Generation and his team of leaders initiated, continues. The Singapore dream. That dream of making things better for ourselves and for the country and if you think about it, if you look around this area, the dream does not stop here,” said Ms Indranee.

She said there are many things in the pipeline including the Rail Corridor and plans for the Greater Southern Waterfront. "The port is going to be moved off the western side and when you have the Southern Waterfront, there will be commercial buildings, there will be residential buildings, there will be areas to work, to live, to play. The Tanjong Pagar area is going to be transformed yet again," she said.
